PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
ppy Jumping puppy sing is embarassing his owner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time someone comes to visit or says hello at the park, my puppy, Jake, jumps up and tries to lick their face. It’s embarrassing, and I don’t know how to stop it. Can you help? -- Sean in Providence, Rhode Island DEAR SEAN: Jumping up is a common problem for dog owners (for dogs, not so much; they love it). So much so that it’s one of the first things a trainer addresses with an owner. What you’ll need to do is to improve Jake’s overall response to commands as well as train him not to jump on people. Here’s how you do it, step by step: 1. Train the “sit,” “stay” and “come here” commands every day, at home and at the park. Teach him to walk on the leash calmly at your side. 2. Work with a companion who will ring the doorbell from outside, while you command Jake to sit after the bell sounds. 3. Put Jake on a leash. Answer the door to the companion; when Jake tries to jump up, tug the leash once and command him to sit. Remember to use positive reinforcement during training -- lots of praise, with a treat when he follows a command correctly. Avoid negative enforcement like scolding, yelling or hauling on the leash. Jake will not be perfectly behaved for some time; you should keep his leash attached at home when you expect visitors. If he gets overexcited when a visitor arrives and he won’t sit, take him to his crate or another room until he calms down. Even after he masters the training and is better behaved at home and on the leash, you’ll need to train him regularly so that he doesn’t slip back into his jumping-up habit.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Reuse decorations year after year. Decorations need not be discarded once the holiday season ends. Come the new year, inspect holiday decorations and store those that made it through the season unscathed. Doing so benefits the planet and will save you the trouble of shopping for new decorations next holiday season.
In a large bowl (A Kitchen Aide works best or a hand mixer if you have instead) combine the cream cheese, and peanut butter. Mix well until blended. Add the sugar and milk and mix well until smooth. Spoon mixture into pie crust, spread out and chill 4 hours or so, or overnight if you can wait that long. Spread the top with the strawberry preserves and top with the whipped topping. Garnish with chopped peanuts (Regular or dry roasted) if you like.

Seasonal Tree A big thank you to the person(s) who decorate the evergreen tree at the corner of Cheese Factory and Quaker Meetinghouse Roads in Honeoye Falls. We always look forward to seeing the latest decorations as they change to celebrate the current holiday/season. You have consistently brightened this corner for years and have brought a smile to many faces. Please know your hard work is appreciated very much!
Merr Christma!
Don’t Eat Then To the person who felt the need to bash your local farmers over….. mud…. you reamed out farmers over mud. Farmers are under more than enough pressure already, with an alarming percentage of American farms going out of business year after year after year. Only a small percentage consistently make a profit. If you want them to get out and pick up dirt, expect to pay them more for it. If you still don’t get it, grow your own. Quit being entitled, eat the food they grew for you, and be grateful. More Being Added I see more junk and vehicles are being added to the Historical Area? I am not sure why this is OK. I know of many people that have contacted the village about this area. Is anything being done? As some residents are afraid to say anything because of the connections involved. When people are driving thru the area this is what they are seeing. Do we want this to be seen as a junk area? Are there any regulations regarding storing vehicles, boats, RV’s, containers? When the village board is asked, they say they will look into it, but never give a response on why this area is OK to be treated as a junkyard. Some residents take pride in their surroundings and village, while others say they do, but take advantage of their so-called liberties. Can we please clean up the historical site? Garbage is garbage no matter who or what it is!!

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There actually aren’t “57 varieties” of Heinz ketchup, and never were. Company founder H.J. Heinz thought his product should have a number, and he just happened to like 57. * Cataract surgery was possible as early as the 6th century B.C. * Barbie’s physical appearance was inspired by a German doll named Bild Lilli, created in 1952 and based on a high-end call girl named Lilli who was featured in the comic strip “Bild-Zeitung.” She was sold as an adult novelty in bars and tobacco shops -- definitely not as a children’s toy. Barbie inventor Ruth Handler saw the doll while vacationing in Europe and brought it home.

HOW COMMUNITIES BENEFIT WHEN CONSUMERS SHOP LOCAL More money kept in the community. Shopping locally means that more money will stay in the community. According to recent research from Civic Economics, local eateries return nearly 79 percent of revenue to the community, compared to just over 30 percent for chain restaurants. Overall, for every $100 spent at a local business, around $73 remains in the community, verus roughly $43 when shopping at a non-locally owned business.

Here’s a Tip On internet memes, they call them “life hacks,” simple tricks to save you perhaps time, money or simply frustration. Here’s mine: Place a bowl near your entryway. Place your keys in the bowl when you come home. They stay there until you leave. No more lost keys. Now more life hacks for your tip file. -- JoAnn Put a dryer fabric softener sheet on the back of a fan. It sticks and will distribute a fresh scent through your room. -- T.I. via email Put an apple in the potato bag to keep them from growing buds. Check often. -- E.W. in Oregon Sharpen your scissors by cutting through aluminum foil. All you have to do is fold a piece over on itself and use your dull scissors to cut strips. HOMETOWN MAKE THE MOST OF LIMITED SPACE Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

Vitamins for Macular Degeneration Coincide With New Cramps ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been told at the age of 70 that I am in the early stages of the eye disease macular degeneration. The doctor told me to take PreserVision AREDS 2 vitamins. He said that I will be taking them for the rest of my life. I started them immediately, and a few nights later, I started having severe left leg cramps to the point where I woke out of a sound sleep to jump out of bed and shake off the cramp. Is this typical? -- C.L. ANSWER: For the dry form of age-related macular degeneration, the AREDS and AREDS2 vitamins are the usual treatment. Although they are not a cure, they do slow progression of the disease. My experience with these has been that they almost never cause side effects, and muscle cramping is not a reported side effect by the manufacturer. The timing, however, certainly is suspicious. You can try stopping them for a few days, then restarting them to see if the cramps are truly affected by the vitamins. If they are, you have two choices. The first is to deal with cramps the same way that people who get them at night for no particular reason deal with it, which is by getting regular moderate exercise and stretching the calf and hamstring muscles before bed. Having weight on the toes is a trigger for many people, so very light bed covers that aren’t tucked in can be surprisingly helpful. I’ve had a few readers come up with devices to keep all weight off of their toes in bed. Your second option is to discuss an alternative with your eye professional. The AREDS and AREDS2 formulas were shown to be helpful, but some eye professionals only choose a few components of the formula. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do. Kelli Marsh, Jenna Knauf, and Sean McCarthy bring nostalgia to Rochester each December BY SUZIE WELLS
I
n the heart of Rochester, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Court Street undergoes a magical transformation every December, thanks to the tireless efforts of Kelli Marsh, Jenna Knauf, and Sean McCarthy. Their collective brainchild, Roc Holiday Village, has become a cherished tradition, filling the city with the warmth of Christmas cheer. However, behind the festive spectacle lies a deeply personal connection for Kelli Marsh, a Rochester native with a profound love for her community and a passion for creating lasting holiday memories. For Marsh, the roots of Roc Holiday Village trace back to her own childhood, where visits with family to Santa left an indelible mark. Her subsequent travels around the world exposed her to the grandeur of Christmas markets in France, Germany, and New York City, planting the seed for her desire to bring that same enchantment back to her hometown. For Marsh, Roc Holiday Village is not just an event; it’s a reflection of nostalgia and commitment to infuse the holiday spirit into the heart of Rochester. As a mother, Marsh hopes to create for her son the same magical experiences she treasured as a child. Her vision extends beyond personal nostalgia; she says she, Knauf, and McCarthy wanted to revitalize downtown Rochester during the winter season, filling the void left by the closure of Midtown Plaza. “Winter in Rochester is a special time of year when the community comes together to celebrate,” Marsh says. When not working on the annual Roc Holiday Village event, she and her family actively embrace the winter spirit, hitting the slopes for skiing and snowboarding. She explains, “We make a point of embracing all the seasons Rochester has to offer. The festive season in December is particularly magical. Rochester has something for everyone, from its renowned museums to exceptional performance arts experiences, making it an ideal winter destination.”
Among festival highlights, Marsh says her personal favorite is Santa’s Workshop. Transforming it into a magical and inclusive space, the workshop caters to visitors of all ages. Marsh emphasizes the significance of creating an event where elements are free, accessible, and diverse. “It’s a place where everyone feels welcome and happy,” she says, underlining the importance of representation accessibility, including a Black Santa and a Santa who communicates using American Sign Language. Marsh says, “What I love most is seeing the children’s faces light up with joy while they visit us. It’s a place where everyone feels welcome and happy!” As the coordinator of Roc Holiday Village, Marsh’s role extends far beyond the festive season. Describing the year-round planning process, she notes the challenges of scheduling, booking special events, ordering supplies, and creating bespoke keepsakes. However, with a dedicated team of staff, volunteers, and crucial sponsor support, the event comes to life, year after year. Roc Holiday Village coordinators aim to continue providing the same magical experiences visitors have come to love over the years. In its fifth year, the event now includes The Giving Cup: Hot Cocoa for a Cause, where representatives from local non-profits serve cocoa and coffee to raise money for their charities. Also featured this year is a private Igloo Inn that offers guests an exclusive space to overlook the ice rink. Roc Holiday Village partnered with Rohrbach Brewing Company this year for an exclusive beer flavor called Village Lager. Silent Discos on the outdoor ice rink and an expanded selection of free arcade games add to the activities to keep the family entertained and mesmerized. In Kelli Marsh’s vision, Roc Holiday Village isn’t just an event; it’s a manifestation of the joy, inclusivity, and community spirit that define the festive season in Rochester. “Our city comes alive during December when we bring back this special event.” Marsh says, “With a wide range of vendors in the Village, delicious local food, music featuring local acts, and the opportunity to spend time with loved ones, the whole area sparkles with festive cheer.” The commitment of Marsh, Knauf, and McCarthy to create a magical space for all shines, making the 17day Roc Holiday Village a beacon of winter wonder for families and individuals alike. Visit rocholidayvillage.com for more information.
The festival itself, now in its fifth year, has become a testament to Marsh’s dedication to inclusivity and community engagement. Recognizing and celebrating various cultural traditions, including Hanukkah, Three Kings Day, Kwanzaa, and Christmas, Roc Holiday Village has evolved into a melting pot of festivities. Marsh says, “One of the best things about the winter holidays is the multitude of cultural traditions we can explore and appreciate. Community partners help us create memorable and educational experiences for our guests, allowing them to discover new traditions. With family at the center of the holidays, we relish the chance to bring people together and establish new traditions of our own.”

DID YOU KNOW? Nursing is one of the fastest-growing and longest-running occupations in the United States and Canada. The New England Hospital for Women and Children, established in 1862, was the first nursing school in the United States. The first formal nursing training program in Canada was established in 1874 at the General and Marine Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario. The American Nurses Association was started in 1898. The Canadian Nurses’ Association, formerly the Canadian National Association of Trained Nurses, was developed in 1907. These associations are national professional associations representing the hundreds of thousands of nurses across the country and are instrumental in legislative policy and the influences of health care on nursing professionals today.

Prepare Your Garden for Winter’s Onslaught Remove spent plants Decomposing organic material is the basis for compost and other fertilizers. However, vegetable plants that are left to sit can lead to decay in the garden. Decaying plants can serve as hosts for pest populations and diseases. Rotting vegetables also can drop unwanted seeds into the soil, which eventually can strip nutrients that normally would go to next year’s crops. Ornamental plants and perennials can be cut back in fall. Cut down stalks and remove leaves. Plant a cover crop A cover crop protects the soil and can return nutrients to it. When the soil is bare during winter, weed seeds can easily blow in and lie in wait, ultimately becoming a problem during the ensuing year. Cover crops can include clover or field peas, which will increase the levels of available nitrogen. Amend the soil Fall is a perfect time to add soil amendments, such as manure and compost. These fertilizers will add nutrients and break down gradually, enriching the soil over the winter. Divide bulbs Divide plant bulbs and plant them where you want flowers like daffodils and tulips to grow in the spring. Prune dormant plants Wait until plants are dormant to prune them and adjust their shape. Most shrubs and trees should be pruned in late winter, right before new growth. Move potted plants Bring delicate plants into a sheltered area, such as a greenhouse or indoor garage, so they can continue to thrive during the winter.
