THE PERFECT TREE!
Active Living 50+ ____________________14
Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles.

PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Christmas trees are symbols of the holiday season and the spirit of giving that the season champions. Choosing and decorating a Christmas tree is a tradition for many families, and depending on the trees they choose, families may have some work to do to keep their trees glowing all season long. Artificial Christmas trees require little, if any, maintenance. But live Christmas trees, which some people feel are more authentic and welcoming than their artificial counterparts, require daily maintenance. In addition to supplying the tree with water at least once per day, live Christmas tree owners can take steps to prolong the life of their trees.

DID YOU KNOW? Kwanzaa traces its origins to Africa and is celebrated across North America and other nations that have large populations that trace their heritage to Africa. The holiday begins on December 26 and continues until January 1. The main components of the celebration include family, community and culture. Kwanzaa was not designed to replace Christmas. In fact, many Kwanzaa celebrants also celebrate Christmas. The word “kwanzaa” is from the Swahili phrase “Matunda ya kwanza,” which means “first fruits.” Maulana Karenga, the professor who created the holiday in 1966, chose Swahili as the language associated with the holiday because it isn’t affiliated with a particular African region or tribe. At the heart of the holiday are seven principles that celebrants embrace and follow: unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Even though the holiday was created for African Americans, many other ethnic groups are inspired by the foundations of Kwanzaa and choose to join in the festivities.
The National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) reports that millions of U.S. families plan to focus their holiday traditions around a real Christmas tree. That means that a lot of real trees will be sold this year starting in mid-November. NCTA also says that “about 23 percent of the consumers will purchase their trees from a ‘Christmas tree farm’ while about 62 percent will buy trees from a retail lot.” About 300,000 consumers will purchase their real tree over the Internet or by mail order. It is estimated that just as many households plan to use a new or used artificial tree this season. Real trees are in major competition with the plastic and aluminum versions.

GIFTS THAT PAMPER AND REJUVENATE Stress can be bad for the body, contributing to depression, anxiety, hypertension, and even obesity. Unfortunately, more than half of working adults and 47 percent of all Americans say they are concerned with the amount of stress in their lives, according to a survey from the American Psychological Association. Canadians, too, are feeling stressed. The North American research company Ipsos found that stress affects 76 percent of the Canadian population. Reducing stress can be especially important during the holiday season, which, thanks in part to its hectic nature, tends to produce extra feelings of stress. Gifts that pamper, relax and rejuvenate might be the ideal fit for those who need a little rest and relaxation.

GREENER WAYS TO DO HOLIDAY SHOPPING Shoppers can travel to stores together to reduce the amount of vehicles on the road. Carpooling or ridesharing to stores can prevent excessive vehicle emissions. Carpooling also has the added benefit of allowing drivers to utilize carpool lanes on major highways. This keeps cars moving at steady speeds, improving fuel efficiency and reducing the likelihood that fuel will be wasted while sitting in stop-and-go traffic.

4 tablespoons granulated sugar 2 cups warm milk (about 110 F) 2 tablespoons active dry yeast 3 cups gluten-free all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons xanthan gum 4 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 extra-large eggs 1/4 cup neutral-flavored oil such as rice bran or canola 2 teaspoons vinegar, preferably apple cider Melted unsalted butter for brushing Tapioca flour for dusting Brush 18 standard muffin cups (one 12-cup pan and one 6cup pan) with melted butter and dust with tapioca flour. In a small bowl, whisk 1 tablespoon of the sugar into the warm milk. Whisk in the yeast to dissolve. Set aside to proof. The mixture will get foamy. If your kitchen is warm, the mixture will foam quickly, so watch it to make sure it does not overflow the bowl.
In a medium bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, xanthan gum, baking powder, salt, and remaining 3 tablespoons sugar. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the eggs on medium speed until foamy, about 3 minutes. Add the oil and beat for 2 more minutes. Reduce the speed to low, add the vinegar and beat to combine. Add the yeast mixture and beat to mix. Add the flour mixture and beat to combine, then increase the speed to mediumhigh and beat for 3 minutes longer. Distribute the dough equally among the prepared muffin cups and fill them about three-quarters full. With a sharp knife that has been dipped in tapioca flour, cut a deep slash in the top of each roll. Dip the knife in flour before each cut, and don’t worry if a little extra tapioca flour is left on top of the rolls. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Let the dough stand in a warm, draft-free place to rise until doubled in bulk, about 40 minutes. Brush the top of each roll with melted butter. Bake until the tops are a nice golden brown, about 20 minutes. If they start to brown too quickly, loosely tent the rolls with aluminum foil. Remove the rolls to wire racks to cool. If you are serving them immediately, it’s nice to put them in a tea towel-lined blanket to keep warm. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Get rid of your old holiday lights. Still using the same Christmas lights you used in 1995? Such lights are likely incandescent bulbs that are considerably less efficient than today’s LED Christmas lights. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that LED lights consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. In addition, the OEERE says that LED holiday lights are easier to install and that as many as 25 strings of lights can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket. Twisted Colon Is a Surgical Emergency
200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester
Patient Focused • Family Friendly Restorative Dentistry
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: This past weekend, during my son’s wedding festivities, I experienced a sigmoid volvulus. Doctors recommended surgery, but I opted for a colonoscopy, which was performed successfully. Thank goodness. I was immediately a new woman, and no one would have dreamed I went through this emergency. The surgeons recommended I have my sigmoid colon removed in order to decrease the risk of recurrence. Ideally, this would happen as soon as possible. What could have prompted the sigmoid volvulus? Is it an absolute that I must have my sigmoid colon removed? What are the odds of it recurring? If I do need the surgery, how can I best prepare for it, and what are the side effects? -- M.B. ANSWER: A volvulus is the twisting of a hollow structure in the body around its long axis (imagine holding one end of a sock in each hand and flipping the middle so it twists on itself). The sigmoid colon is the most common location. It is a surgical emergency, as tissue death and gangrene may follow. The biggest risk factor for volvulus is chronic constipation, but some people just have anatomy that predisposes them to get a volvulus. Surgery is the definitive treatment, but colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy may be used to untwist the colon; medical professionals use the term “reduce.” However, your surgeon was right that you are at risk for this happening again. In those people with a history of volvulus, 50% to 60% will get another, and if you have two, the recurrence rate is even higher. For a person in generally good health, I would recommend definitive surgery to prevent recurrence of volvulus. There are no specific instructions to prepare for surgery, beyond taking good care of yourself and following your surgeon’s instructions about your medications (if any). Any abdominal surgery has the risk of bleeding, infection and adhesions (connections between loops of bowel that can lead to painful obstruction later); however, these risks are quite small. ***

RECOGNIZE AND AVOID YOUTH SPORTS INJURIES Children benefit in various ways from their involvement in youth sports. Being part of a team fosters feelings of belonging, inspires collaborative play and strategy and can be an excellent form of exercise. Still, despite the benefits, parents often worry about the injury risk their children face on the playing fields. Those fears are justified. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey of emergency room visits found that a young athlete visits a hospital emergency room for a sports-related injury more than a million times a year, or about every 25 seconds. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 2.6 million children 0 to 19 years old are treated in the emergency department each year for sports- and recreation-related injuries. Some of the more common injuries young children face have to do with the skeletal and muscular systems of the body. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons stresses that children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are still growing, making them more susceptible to injury. Fortunately, with some education, many youth-sport injuries can be prevented.

WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION? Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment. In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection. Page 13

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Christmas Dinner Moves Indoors Those in power at the senior center have now decreed that we will have the annual Christmas dinner indoors instead of out in the parking lot. This flash of brilliance came after they received a number of responses that were more along the lines of “Are you crazy?” rather than the expected RSVPs. The original plan was to spread tables across the asphalt outside, with culinary arts students bringing food and drink out from the kitchen in the center, and to park a bunch of senior citizens outside in the cold in the middle of December in New England to eat that dinner. Saner heads prevailed, I hear, when a retired nurse posed the question: “And just how many of our members do you suppose are going to end up in the hospital after two hours of exposure to outdoor December temperatures?” The student chef, I also hear, claimed that he’d been asked to provide a “hot dinner” and wasn’t thrilled about having to work for hours over hot stoves only to have his creations subjected to icy temperatures. As of now, the dinner will be indoors with fewer tables. Santa will still arrive via limo, and the high-school chorus will still sing (although they’ll be out in the hall as there is no place for all of them in the actual room). Watch this space, however, because I hear there is a movement afoot (as well as a petition from members) to ditch the sit-down dinner completely and instead have a standup event with finger foods arrayed on tables and a cash bar over in the corner. “We want to see our friends and mingle” has been the cry (as well as what is written on the petition). “We want some good dance music” penciled in one signer. In a perfect world, the powers-that-be would have asked the members first. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Ascochyta leaf blight Lawns suffering from ascochyta leaf blight will become straw-colored. According to the lawn care and pesticide experts at Ortho®, when a lawn is affected by ascochyta leaf blight, its healthy grass blades will be mixed in with diseased grass blades. Most prevalent in the spring, this disease can affect grass at any time during the growing season. That’s because the ascochyta fungi invade leaf blades through wounds, such as those that can result from mowing. Ortho® notes that dull lawn mowers can contribute to the disease, which might disappear on its own and can even return after it’s seemingly been cured.

Make the most of mulching Lawns and gardens can often benefit from the laying of mulch. Mulch serves various purposes in lawns and gardens, and many experienced lawn and garden enthusiasts lay mulch to ensure their properties make it through spring, summer and fall unscathed. First-time homeowners with little or no landscaping experience may not understand the benefits of mulch, which can be used to strengthen soil and protect properties from the elements.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire. ~Hugh Macmillan GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Got plastic packaging that’s a pain to get open? Use your can opener. Run it around the sides to break into your packages. It works! * For every side dish that requires extra preparation time, plan for one or two that don’t. For instance, if you are preparing a casserole with many ingredients and complicated instructions, serve a package of vegetables that require nothing more than steaming. * Wine buyers tip: Experts say to multiply the number of adult guests by a half bottle to determine how many bottles of wine to buy for your holiday gathering. Add an additional glass of wine per guest for every hour after dinner you expect guests to linger. * How to peel potatoes: Boil whole potatoes with skin on for 20-30 minutes (depending on the size of your potatoes). You should be able to stick a knife all the way through without resistance. Then remove them to an ice bath for 10 seconds each. The skin will slip right off. * “Have kids make their own whipped cream with a jam jar! Fill a screw-top jar (glass, chilled, works really well) halfway with heavy cream, a little sugar and any flavoring extracts you like, then seal and shake. Kids also can make butter with cream in a jar. You may add a pinch of salt instead of sugar, and shake longer.” -- A.A. in Florida * Researchers tell us that the best time to interview is late morning on a Tuesday. You will avoid the interviewer’s likely Monday/Friday crunch, and have his or her full attention. Do your homework on the company, and get ready to shine!

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air. ~Alexander Smith (1829–1867), “An Essay on an Old Subject” 3rd Annual Rochester Ugly Sweater 5K in the Hamlet of Mendon will start at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 4. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * You’re more likely to die on your way to purchase a lottery ticket than you are to actually win the lottery. * The Western lowland gorilla’s scientific name is Gorilla gorilla gorilla. * Speaking of names, SpongeBob was originally created as SpongeBoy, but Nickelodeon discovered that the moniker was already copyrighted by a mop. * Using &%#@$ instead of swear words is called a Grawlix.
DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.
DEAR SARA: I’m a fan of harnesses, especially for dogs that like to pull at the leash. A harness fits around a dog’s front legs and torso, and has a top strap with a clip ring for the leash located between the dog’s shoulders. It’s secure and sturdy, it stays on your dog, and he won’t injure himself trying to pull away from you. (You can also keep his collar on, mainly so his license tag is always visible.) Some dog harnesses come with a sturdy handle sewn onto the top strap. It’s not so much for picking up the dog but is an additional point of control if you’re worried about your dog bolting or jumping up on other people. For the long term, of course, your Lab needs to improve his basic obedience skills. He should never tug at his leash, but should walk next to you. Putting him into a harness will give you more control. Dogs tend to respond more often to a tug on the harness, which applies pressure at several points rather than just around the neck. Those multiple contact points disperse pressure around the dog’s torso so that he remains comfortable and uninjured, reducing anxiety and hopefully making him more receptive to training commands. Harnesses are not as cheap as collars, but they’re well worth the investment, especially when dealing with a strong, independent thinker like your Lab. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

a festive table on a dime
YOU
C AN
DO
IT!
Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.
Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.
Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.
Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.
Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.
Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.
Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

S E V RA Pavilion girls volleyball A great Pavilion Central School community and alumni has supported and contributed to our Pavilion Girls Volleyball Team! A big thank you to the Pavilion Central School administration, teachers, staff, and students that came and cheered us on. While winning the Class D Sectional Title and the Far West Regional, we had the largest crowd, always giving the team a standing ovation at match point. They also followed the team to Glens Falls for the State Tournament. Even though we had to travel the furthest of the Class D teams, we had the largest crowd with the loudest and proudest fans. Everyone in the Pavilion Central Community made an amazing experience even better. Thank you!
Wallet return On November 9th, my wallet dropped out of my car when I went to go into Target in Batavia. I didn't realize I had dropped it. A man saw it had been dropped and brought it to the desk intact. A relative working at the desk knew me and brought it to me. I appreciate your integrity more than you know, and I am very grateful! - A very thankful neighbor
Three generations of excellence
School violence I have been hearing rumors of [local] school district having a bullying problem again. My two great grand children, plus other kids are being bullied, as well. My one great grandson was pushed into a "pond." Why are these bullies being tolerated again? My granddaughter went through this school district in the 1980s, and she was beaten on her head. Why? If you have surveillance cameras, please review them. Stop the violence. This behavior is not acceptable! Manchin makes sense Joe Manchin stood up against his own Democratic party. This new bill will cost a lot, although [some] say it costs nothing. The biggest polluters in the world did not attend the Climate Summit, and Sleepy Joe lived up to his name. Shutting down America's coal, natural gas and oil industries kills our jobs and our independence from other countries. If we don't produce it for ourselves, other countries will produce it for us. This does not help America or the climate. Hope you enjoy the price of gas and your upcoming heating bills. Pull together If there were ever a time in the history of our world that everyone needs to be pulling together, it is now. But it seems that instead of pulling together, we in the United States seem to be finding more reasons to find fault with one another. Neither the far right nor the far left are where we should be. With all the problems Covid has caused because of businesses having to temporarily close down all over the world, we are experiencing major supply shortages. Many companies find themselves forced to raise their prices to stay in business. Things will eventually get better, and if we all work together, it will happen sooner rather than later.

WHY NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO START YOUR BUSINESS B Y A M Y C O L L E T T, V I C T O R C O M M U N I T Y D E V E L O P M E N T
W
ith or without the pandemic, starting a business is a challenging prospect, requiring the will to make a leap of faith to achieve success. While the early pandemic period posed a difficult time for businesses, the current arc is proving to be the opposite. The pandemic is still not over, but we are slowly moving towards a stable, predictable future. In this article, we explore three reasons why the present is the best time to bring your entrepreneurship dreams to life.
Crowdfunding: This method involves raising capital through small contributions from a large number of people. Crowdfunding can be of four different types: debt, equity, donation, or charity. Funds garnered can be used to launch projects, meet short-term expenses, and boost cash flow.
Reduced Competition
•
Use your business plan as a guide towards where and how to utilize your funds. This could include product development, marketing activities, etc.
•
Invest in technology that will make your operations efficient, such as a customer relationship management system, inventory management platform, and more.
•
Consider hiring staff to assist you in key areas of your business such as:
1.
An accountant to help create financial statements and file taxes.
2.
A legal consultant to oversee all legal requirements, provide guidance during contract negotiation with vendors and disputes.
3.
A social media assistant to grow your online presence.
“Current market conditions are perfect for entrepreneurs with innovative solutions!”
As reported by Fortune, since the start of 2020, more than 200,000 small businesses across the country have ceased operations, with 60% of them being permanent. While this is disheartening news, it is also an opportunity for new businesses to serve millions of customers who are looking for new services and products to meet their demands. One of the major challenges for new businesses is to compete against existing players in the market for a share of customers and revenue. Reduced competition and a large unclaimed share of the market present a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs who can create unique solutions catering to customer demands. This requires in-depth market research, identifying a niche, and creating products that are easy to scale.
Once you have completed the hard work of securing funding, it’s important to work towards using it judiciously. Here are a few tips to do that:
While challenges presented by the pandemic may be daunting for some, the current market conditions are perfect for entrepreneurs with innovative solutions looking to make a mark on the industry.
Changing Customer Trends A prominent reason for business closures during the pandemic was their dependence on in-person sales for revenue. As COVID-19 lockdowns restricted customers from accessing businesses, sales dipped, and losses occurred.
This resource guide is just one example of the great content you can find on the Victor Community Development Office website.
As reported by ROI Revolution, e-commerce revenue in the US is expected to gross above $500 million by 2022. Even before 2020, e-commerce was rise; however, the pandemic accelerated its growth tremendously and led to a shift in consumer behavior. At the start of the pandemic, individuals preferred to shop online to stay protected from the virus. Additionally, the need for maintaining good health made consumers increasingly aware of making educated purchase decisions. The prominence of e-commerce makes it easier for small businesses to connect directly with customers and make sales. Moreover, it helps overcome major costs of investing in an office, store, utilities, staff, etc., allowing entrepreneurs more resources to invest towards product development and marketing. Multiple Funding Opportunities Here are a few viable avenues through which you can generate startup money: Microloans: These are loans up to the amount of $50,000 catered towards entrepreneurs struggling to secure funding from banks and credit unions. Microloans are issued by organizations such as the SBA, USDA, Grameen America, and more. A good credit score is needed to be eligible, and interest rates can vary depending on the organization. Angel Investors: These are individuals who seek to invest large sums of capital into start-ups having good growth potential. Securing funding from an angel investor will require a strong business plan, positive financial statements, and accurate future projections. The amount received can vary; however, it will be enough to cover all major expenses of your business.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER Meets deadlines: People working together on a project have their own unique responsibilities regarding such projects. It’s important that the end result is produced on time; otherwise, the entire group pays the price. Employees who care about their teams consistently meet their deadlines, making things easier for their fellow team members as a result.
GREAT PART-TIME JOBS FOR RETIREES Seasonal work: Seasonal work is another great way for retirees to fill their time and make a little extra money along the way. Come the holiday season, retirees should have no trouble finding seasonal retail work at their local malls or shopping centers. In warmer months, retirees may find seasonal employment at area beaches, golf courses or parks.

SIMPLIFY COOKING FOR A CROWD THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Start early. If the big party is on Christmas Day, that does not mean hosts have to start cooking while everyone unwraps their presents. Hosts who are uncertain about what to cook can look for meals that can be prepared in advance so come the big day all they need to do is turn on the oven and let meals cook while the family spends time together. CAREGIVERS, TAKE CARE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR CAREGIVING DUTIES FROM OVERWHELMING YOU (NAPSI)—Caregiving for a loved one can be a fulfilling, yet overwhelming experience. Forty million Americans provide care for their aging loved one each year, and spend an average of 24.4 hours per week doing so. Try as one may to create a balanced lifestyle, it’s a role that easily crowds out other important areas of life, including personal and professional relationships, and generates high levels of stress that could lead to serious health problems long-term if not managed. Caregivers should feel empowered to adopt the following tactics to lighten the burden, and achieve a renewed sense of control: Remember your own health: It’s important to not lose sight of your physical and mental health during particularly stressful times. Improve your energy level with smart eating choices: plan easy, healthy recipes that take less than 30 minutes, schedule grocery deliveries, or subscribe to meal kits. And, committing to just 10 minutes a day of moving your body will help you feel energized, while boosting your mental health. Exercise is also a good way to engage with your loved one—join them for a walk or even a water aerobics class. Be transparent with your employer about your role as a caregiver: Burning the midnight oil to meet your caregiver and professional responsibilities doesn’t do you, your loved one, or your career any favors. Speaking candidly about the pressures you face as a caregiver with your employer can help relieve stress in the long run. Discuss options such as flexible work hours or working remotely, and set realistic expectations for yourself. Leverage technology: Utilize tools that offer you visibility into your loved one’s health status and simplify the complexities of coordinating care. These solutions allow you to refocus your attention on the key moments that matter most with your loved ones, while offering the peace of mind of knowing your loved one will have 24/7 access to help. For example, Philips Cares is a mobile application that enables you to easily form and activate a care circle of trusted family and friends, access meaningful insights into your loved one’s wellbeing, and manage your Philips Lifeline personal alert service. It helps you and your care circle be there for your aging loved ones, easing and enriching their aging journey. To learn more about the latest technology helping to ease caregivers’ burdens, visit https://philips. to/2MGDqLm or call (855) 223-7395
