Ahiddenfireburnsperpetuallyupon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. Christmas is far and away my favorite holiday. I love everything about it, from the event that inspired it, hoping for a white one, to wrapping presents. But mostly I love having family and friends gathered, and sharing traditions. Ellen Hopkins

DID

YOU

KNOW?

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Not just on Small Business Saturday...

Nosy

Here’s a shout out to all those small business owners who are going above and beyond to serve their communities. Especially at this time of year we should take the time to patronize the local shops, cafes, breweries and markets. These establishments are what make small towns unique, friendly and the place we’re proud to call home.

This has been on my mind and I need to say it, and I hope you read this: To the woman who called me a "nosy [expletive]," I heard you ask what your balance was on your SNAP, so I instinctively looked as customers in the past have asked the same and I checked for them. You stormed out before I could even explain why I looked at your receipt. If anyone is the [expletive], it's you.

Tow Company

Love my Penny Saver!

I just finished the current Penny Saver. Love what you do with all the articles, Did You Know, Trivia, Paws Corner, health articles, and more! Keep up the good work. I am already looking forward to the Penny Saver during the coming weeks. Have a Merry Christmas.

On Nov 14th, my car was towed to the tire place on [local road]. I trusted the tow truck driver to tow it there (1 or 2 miles) and at least lock the vehicle before giving the key to the tire associate. To make a long story short, when the car was fixed and I drove it home, the hatchback had been broken into. My camping canvas bag was missing with a kitchen set of knives worth $100-$200 gone. My insurance papers were missing from the glove compartment.

Never assume a towing company will lock your vehicle. The young man driving told me he had done this for 20 years and knew what he was doing. Really? Locking the car isn't included?

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Cardiologist Doesn’t Recommend Over-the-Counter Sleep Aids

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old man in reasonably good health. When I had trouble falling asleep, I would take a swig of Zzzquil, which worked perfectly every time. However, since then, my cardiologist told me to stop taking such products, so I turned to 5-mg tablets of melatonin in the evening to help induce drowsiness. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t.

One night, after I had three beers, I also took two gelcaps of Gas-X to alleviate the bloated feeling just before bed. It was about an hour or so after the melatonin, and I quickly dozed off to sleep. Since then, I noticed that if I awaken in the night and take another Gas-X, I shortly doze off again and have remarkable, complex dreams. Is this self-protocol of mine medically unsound in any way?

ANSWER: There’s a lot going on here. First off, I completely agree with your cardiologist that the sleep aid you were taking, like most over-the-counter sleep aids, contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that sedates some people. The problem with this medicine is that the quality of sleep isn’t good for many people. It also increases the risk of falls in older people and the risk of motor vehicle accidents in people who drive. It’s not a good choice for older adults.

Melatonin is safer and has fewer side effect, one of them being vivid dreams. However, 5 mg is a big dose. I usually recommend 0.5-1 mg in my older patients. Gas-X (simethicone) isn’t absorbed into the body and shouldn’t cause vivid dreams. A search found no reports of abnormal dreams with simethicone, so it was almost certainly the melatonin that caused the dreams. Maybe Gas-X allowed you to sleep while the melatonin was still around enough to give you vivid dreams.

In addition, three beers on a regular basis are more than what is considered healthy for anyone, and a man in his 80s will be affected by three beers much more than a younger man of the same size.

DR. ROACH WRITES: Seven years ago, I went to the emergency room and was told I had blood clots in my arms that traveled to my lungs. I started Eliquis. The doctor said I had a problem with factor V, but I don’t have my blood results. Do I need to stay on this blood thinner? I know it has severe side effects.

ANSWER: Factor V is a protein that is critical in making clots, and an abnormality in this protein can make a person bleed (although this is very rare). What’s more common is a condition called factor V Leiden (FVL), which makes the body resistant to the activated protein C, a natural anticoagulant. (Anticoagulants decrease blood-clotting and are sometimes referred to as “blood thinners.”) So, the net effect of FVL is that it makes blood clots a little more likely. Many people have FVL, but most will not develop a blood clot.

However, you apparently developed blood clots in both arms that caused the clots to move to the lungs, which are called pulmonary emboli. Determining the duration of therapy takes clinical judgment. Because you had clots in your arms rather than your legs, had a pulmonary embolus, and have FVL, some experts would treat you for the rest of your lifetime. I wouldn’t say that Eliquis has severe side effects. Because it reduces blood-clotting, there is a chance of bleeding. For most people with a low to average risk of bleeding, the likelihood is on the order of 1% to 2% per year. If the risk of a life-threatening clot is higher than the risk of bleeding, then continued anticoagulation is preferred.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

HONEOYE FALLS HOLIDAY PARADE

CelebratesCommunitySpirit, Creativity&Togetherness

The Honeoye Falls Holiday Parade is a cherished tradition, drawing thousands of community members each year to the heart of the village. For over three decades, this festive event not only spreads holiday cheer but also showcases the dedication of the Honeoye Falls Fire Department (HFFD) and countless other contributors who make it possible.

According to Anthony Militello, Vice President of the HFFD, and Bill Soehner, Past President of the HFFD, the planning process has become morestreamlinedovertheyears. eprimaryfocusremainsreachingoutto past participants, such as fire departments and community organizations, while incorporating new ideas whenever possible. However, they admit that one annual challenge persists: making sure Santa is available.

e event relies on a collaborative effort from various organizations and individuals throughout the community. e Village of Honeoye Falls plays a key role in judging and supporting the parade, while local businesses add their own festive touches by offering cookies and hot chocolate to attendees before and a er the parade. Many of these contributions are informal, reflecting the organic enthusiasm surrounding the parade. Militello and Soehner say, “We love to see that there are many other organizations that help make it such an enjoyable night in the village.”

e parade has evolved in creativity as well, the firefighters say. e HF-L school district, for instance, has contributed increasingly elaborate entries in recent years. e improvements in quality and creativity among participants have enhanced the parade experience for both organizers and attendees.

e list of standout participants is extensive and growing. From the Pittsford Fire Department’s band to the Richmond Fire District, which o en aims to secure the “best fire department entry” award, the event draws impressive contributions from both nearby and distant communities. Other notable participants include the local Rotary Club, HF-L school district and scout organizations, the VFW, and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, each bringing their own festive spirit to the evening.

efiredepartment’smotivationtoorganizetheparadeeachyearstems from the joy it brings to the community. “We love seeing the community come out for this event,” say Militello and Soehner. “It is really the largest single draw of people to the downtown area all year. e atmosphere and good cheer make it something we really look forward to each year.”

e sheer size of the crowd, sometimes around 5,000 people, speaks to the event’s impact and growth since its inception in the early 1990s. Initially, the parade route spanned just a few blocks from Norton Street to the firehouse. Today, it has expanded significantly, with participation increasing not only locally but also from fire departments further afield.

For the Honeoye Falls Fire Department, the parade has become a treasured tradition. “It is absolutely a tradition,” Militello and Soehner say. “It’s not a fundraising event; it’s just our way to give back in a little different way each year.” is spirit of giving extends beyond the spectacle of the parade itself. Categories such as “best fire department entry” and “best community entry” receive prize money, and this year, a new food vendor has pledged to donate proceeds to the local food cupboard, ensuring that the event supports those in need.

One of the most memorable aspects of the parade is the joy it brings to children. Each year, the firehouse transforms into a hub of excitement as kids eagerly line up to meet Santa. e sight of families and friends gathering together, soaking in the festive atmosphere, makes the months of preparation worthwhile for organizers.

Beyond entertainment, the parade serves as an opportunity for the fire department to connect with the community. Attendees can donate to the department or learn about volunteer opportunities, further strengthening ties between the department and the village it serves. For organizers like Militello and Soehner, the event is a labor of love that reinforces the bonds of a close-knit community.

As this year’s parade approaches (12/14/24), the fire department is eager to welcome residents and visitors alike. ey say, “We hope to see the community come together as in years past. Don’t forget to stop by the firehouse for cookies and a chance to meet Santa.”

PAW’S CORNER

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read about a person who did not vaccinate their house cats, and a er one of them got out, lost all of them to feline leukemia. I can relate to this person. I only have one cat, and I thought, for a while, that I could get away without vaccinating her. Fortunately, a friend convinced me otherwise.

It turns out that it doesn’t take much to protect my baby when she depends on me to take care of her. I’ve never gone without just to pay for “Racquel’s” vaccinations, and in turn, she is a healthy cat who brings so much companionship to my life. Please tell your readers not to skip this important annual appointment. -- Donna in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

DEAR DONNA: You told them, and I thank you. Vaccinating indoor pets can seem like a pricey extravagance, but it pales in comparison to the cost of treating the diseases that they can contract if they’re not vaccinated.

To reduce the annual cost, check around for discounted shot clinics. ese are usually held on specific dates and places -- pet supply stores, public buildings or participating veterinary clinics. However, these clinics o en don’t advertise extensively due to costs, so you may need to search a bit. Contact your city or county government to see if any clinics are being held nearby, or stop in to major pet supply retailers like Petco, which o en sponsor shot clinics. If not, their workers o en know about pet health clinics nearby.

ese clinics offer required vaccinations and licenses, and sometimes have microchipping and a basic health exam available at a low fixed price per pet.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF WHEN TRAVELING ALONE

Limit late nights. An area that may be perfectly safe during the day could be an entirely different place after dark. Plan to travel around mostly during the day. Return to your accommodations and lock up securely in the evening.

Here’s

A Tip

* If you are serving hot rolls on a buffet, line the basket with aluminum foil before you line it with a towel. ey lose heat less quickly that way.

* “I’ve loved this little trick since I saw it used at a party years ago. I serve iced tea (or punch) at most of my get-togethers, and instead of ice cubes, I freeze several pounds of cleaned, destemmed white grapes. ey are a hit at every party.” -- M.A. in New York

* Need almost-instant party snacks? Try a package of storebought cheese tortellini. Cook according to package instructions (usually only a few minutes), toss with oil or salad dressing and stick each on a toothpick.

Maximizing natural light in a home is a smart and sometimes low-cost renovation. Homes that are dark and drab can drain energy levels and reduce productivity. In addition, dark rooms may not be inviting places to gather as a family or when entertaining.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Remove unnecessary items and furniture from rooms to free up more space to get around. Be sure there are no obstructions in walkways, entryways and near doors. Keep staircases clear at all times.

WHAT IS A SMART HOME?

Refrigerators that inform their owners when it’s time to buy more eggs and thermostats that learn homeowners’ heating and cooling preferences may once have seemed like futuristic ideas straight out of a sci-fi movie. However, such products are no longer a dream but a reality. The term “smart home” refers to a residence that has appliances, HVAC, lighting, entertainment systems, security, and many more devices that communicate with one another. Such devices can be controlled remotely, according to SmartHomeUSA, an automation product retailer. Proponents of smart home technology say features can help people save money on utilities and conserve natural resources, all the while providing peace of mind to homeowners.

In 2016, 80 million smart home devices were delivered worldwide. That marks a 64 percent increase from 2015, according to the research data firm IHS Markit. The smart home trend is only expected to grow in coming years.

Although there’s interest in smart home technology, the industry remains fragmented. Consumers are trying to figure out which devices are simply fun and which provide practical benefits. Furthermore, the range of smart devices is expanding rapidly, making potential compatability issues a concern. Companies that plan to educate consumers further about the advantages of smarthomefeaturesandareopen to standardization may have the best chances of survival.

Smart technology is taking over and is likely to continue changing the way people live and work.

Knead and mix all ingredients well. Roll thin and cut with cookie cutters. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes or until lightly brown. DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Buffalo seems to have an incredible advantage against fair-weather teams when Mother Nature dumps on the area. Do you think the Orchard Park outdoor stadium and snowy home-field advantage are key to their identity, or should they prioritize comfort with a domed stadium?

GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING

Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape.

Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY

Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE

Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself andexplainyourconnectionbeforeexplainingwhyyouwantthepersonto become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.
