HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

Holiday meals have a tendency to be lavish, but hosts don’t have to spend all day in the kitchen preparing food that will likely end up as leftovers or trash. REVISIT LESSER-KNOWN CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Christmas celebrants participate in many different traditions year after year, but some may not fully understand the meaning behind such activities. A Christian holiday, Christmas did not originate with all activities centralized to the church. In fact, many of the traditions people hold dear have pagan roots, which were adapted as Christmas celebrations evolved. People who hang mistletoe in doorways may be surprised to learn that this tradition dates back to the ancient Druids. The Druids believed mistletoe possessed mystical powers that brought good luck to the household and warded off evil spirits. Evergreen trees are now associated with Christmas trees, but evergreen boughs were once used to decorate homes during the winter solstice to help people envision the spring to come. Christians often look at evergreen trees as a sign of everlasting life and their relationship with God. However, while many Christmas traditions continue to be an integral part of annual celebrations, there are some customs that have fallen out of favor. Although these traditions may no longer be widely practiced, anyone can revive them and make them part of their holiday celebrations.
Wassailing is a custom that has ancient origins and is not as popular today as it once was. “Wassail” comes from the Ango-Saxon phrase “waes hael,” which means, “good health.” Wassail is a drink made of mulled ale, spices and other ingredients. To go wassailing meant to travel door-to-door singing and offering a drink from a wassail bowl in exchange for gifts. Wassailing has been mentioned in certain Christmas carols, including “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Largely an English tradition, wassailing was brought to America by British settlers. January 17th, the old Twelfth Night, is the traditional date for wassailing. Although wassailing has largely fallen by the wayside, increased interest in ales and craft brewing may help revitalize this Christmas tradition, which can inspire community spirit. Gifting with fruitcake is another tradition that has been much maligned and does not enjoy the same popularity that it once did. Fruitcake is a cake made with chopped candied fruit, nuts and spices and is occasionally soaked in spirits. Fruitcakes have been enjoyed all over the world, but Americans may never have embraced the Christmas fruitcake tradition as much as those from other countries. However, with the right recipe and an open mind, it may be possible to resurrect the fruitcake tradition once again.
DID YOU KNOW?
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The blue whale is earth’s largest living creature, surpassing even most dinosaurs. Not only can it reach over 100 feet in length and weigh more than 100 tons, but its heart can tip the scale at 1,300 pounds and is the size of a small car, while its arteries are big enough for a full-grown human to swim through -- not that we recommend you go for a swim and attempt it. * In 2007, Iran claimed 14 squirrels found near the nation’s borders were actually spies. * The record for most times being hit by a baseball pitch -- a whopping 287 -- belongs to Hughie Jennings, who finally got smart and retired in 1918. Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

‘tis the season SMART WAYS TO BUDGET FOR HOLIDAY GIFTING Set limits on spending. You may want to be generous with everyone and go above and beyond, but overspending is impractical and can have some grave consequences. Many financial planners recommend shoppers spend no more than 1.5 percent of annual income on holiday expenses, so establish realistic spending limits that won’t break the bank.

Here’s a Tip Zip-top bags are essential when our family packs for holiday visiting. We use gallon-size bags for the kids’ outfits -- top, bottoms, underclothes, etc. -- and each bag holds one complete set. There is no suitcase chaos, as the bag comes out, and yesterday’s clothing goes in, ready for laundry day when we get home. Happy traveling. -- JoAnn After Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up. A great storage container for fancy ornaments is a liquor box, which you can get for free outside of package stores. They have cardboard separators that make it easy to store glass bulbs. -- W.F. in New Mexico (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Plumbing Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage. Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers.
HANDYMEN/WOMEN THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE REPLACING WINDOWS The wrong windows can adversely affect home value. The National Association of Realtors says homeowners get about 73 percent of their replacement window investment back when they resell a home. But choosing the wrong windows might lower the value of the home. It’s important to match the look of the original windows, including window material and the divided light pattern (the number of panes in each window) with the original windows.
The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes. By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing.

DID YOU KNOW? When tending to their lawns, homeowners are advised to pay attention to areas that may feature standing water. According to the World Health Organization, standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which can breed in great numbers in pools of water. Mosquitoes are known to carry diseases like malaria, West Nile virus and Zika. Furthermore, mosquitoes that bite pets can transmit heartworms, a serious problem if gone it goes undiscovered. Standing water also can be a haven for bacteria, mold and parasites that are dangerous to human health. If standing, stagnant water is a problem in your yard, remediation is necessary. Directing downspouts away from the house can remediate standing water. Changing the grading of soil so that low spots are elevated is another way to reduce instances of standing water. This may be a project that requires the assistance of a drainage professional. In addition, homeowners can remove standing water from empty flower pots, pool covers, bird baths, and more to reduce the likelihood that mosquitoes will appear on their properties.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS Gutters and downspouts are designed to move rainwater away from the home. Too often, however, gutters and downspouts become clogged or do not work effectively. Overflowing gutters will transfer rainwater down the side of a home, where it can puddle at the foundation. This water can ultimately suffocate a lawn, and it may cause interior damage to the home as well. First, inspect and clean all gutters. Leaves, nests, sticks, and even dead animals can block the flow of water in a gutter. Test downspouts by running hose water from the top of the gutter. Downspouts should be pointed away from the home and may need to be extended so they direct water away from the dwelling.

Prepare a familiar dish. Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easy on themselves by choosing dishes they’ve made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely won’t require as much time to prepare.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Between 1970 and 1973, four Israeli fighter pilots held as POWs in an Egyptian prison passed their time by translating J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” from English into Hebrew. The book was sent to them by their family members via the Red Cross. The pilots’ version was published commercially in 1977 and is still considered by many to be one of the best Hebrew translations available. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Fatal Episodes of VFib Require an AICD Implant ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m an 88-year-old female who has been diagnosed with ventricular fibrillation (VFib). My cardiac electrophysiologist, who implanted a conventional pacemaker four years ago, has noticed several episodes of VFib (up to 30 seconds, read via a bedside monitor). They recommend replacing the current pacemaker with a combo pacemaker and defibrillator. I wonder about the history/success of this device. -- C.R. ANSWER: Most people have heard about atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is a common, chaotic electrical condition of the top chambers of the heart. Without regular electrical input from the atria to the ventricles, the ventricles beat irregularly, but blood flow from the heart still remains adequate. By contrast, VFib is a chaotic movement of the lower chambers, and the heart does not pump blood during VFib. Within a short time, 10 to 30 seconds at most, the brain will not have enough oxygen to keep you conscious. Unless VFib is rapidly treated or stops by itself (which is rare, but happened to you), VFib is fatal. A survivor of VFib definitely benefits from an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD). Nowadays, they also have the ability to act as a pacemaker; they recognize and immediately provide a shock during episodes of VFib. AICDs first became available when I was in medical school during the 1980s, but current models are a huge improvement since they are smaller and last longer. The evidence is strong that people at a high risk for a “malignant” arrythmia like VFib live longer with an AICD than those who are only treated with anti-arrhythmic drugs. The rate of sudden cardiac death is reduced by about 50%. You are very lucky and should get this recommended device as soon as possible. They are common and effective. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury. Page 20

Thanksgiving Dinner Thanks I wish to praise the fantastic job the Dansville Rotary Club did with their Thanksgiving Dinner Program! I was a happy recipient of one of their delicious dinners, and it REALLY was delicious! My dinner arrived nicely HOT and was arranged beautifully. You really made my day! Thank you all, and I hope your Thanksgiving Day was as special as mine! ~ A senior citizen in Dansville Tribute to a Kind Neighbor Today Donna Cochrane from Honeoye came to pick up items for a Sunday school service project a mutual friend is leading, and mentioned that a fall earlier in the day landed the lady at urgent care with broken bones in her hand. Donna had already picked up our friend’s prescriptions and was likely on her way to provide dinner as well. This kindness reminded me of the many times Donna has recognized and quietly provided for people in the community. After a long career in the classroom, she is especially attuned to helping children in need - and I only know of the few I have helped her accomplish. She is a shining example of living the Golden Rule, and I am blessed to call her my friend.
Business Attitudes I tried to purchase a product locally and have it installed. The item was not in stock and it would take a couple weeks to have them order my particular item. I went online and ordered it, and it came in 3 days. Went to have it installed for just an installation fee and got an attitude for not purchasing it from them. Waiting a couple weeks or taking a substitute was not what I wanted. My suggestion is to call them first of your intentions; if you get an attitude, go elsewhere. No one cares about us We senior citizens are lonesome and left alone. Holidays are very depressing. Some of us are handicap in nursing homes. In today’s society, our kids, family, and supposed friends always say, “If you need us, call.” Well, this isn’t the case. Some of us need outside help: leaves to rake, a quick roof job... I could go on and on. All of today’s generations don’t care. The generations have to remember we raised them, put them through college, but they don’t think of all this. Why can’t you help us? Remember, we are still alive. Wake up, children, someday you will regret this and say “I wish Mom and Dad were here.” Too late. People in today’s society need to wake up and help each other like in the olden days. Where did the good old days go besides down the tube? - Sincerely, Senior Citizens

Susan Ashline Exposes the Criminal Justice System in her True Crime / Memoir, A Jacket off the Gorge BY SUZIE WELLS olice believe a trove of ancient coins is buried in Western NY by criminal mastermind, Jon Fontaine. Susan Ashline of Ontario, NY tells her side of Jon’s true crime story in A Jacket Off the Gorge, and in so telling, shines a light on the systemic failure of today’s criminal justice system.
P
the process that leads to justice involves many links, and if one is broken, the whole chain is no good.” Hence why she shares her story in this book.
Ashline describes Fontaine’s teenage years as filled with a lucrative drug-selling enterprise. Despite tricks up his sleeve, the law caught up with him every time. However, in 2004, to escape a lengthy prison sentence, Ashline says Fontaine bailed out of jail and faked his own death at the Middle Falls in Letchworth State Park, leading park police and New York State police on a four-day search and rescue operation involving a helicopter, sniffer dogs, and a rappel team. When police found Fontaine’s jacket in the gorge, they declared him dead. However, by then, he had run to the Pacific Northwest. Fontaine was eventually captured.
Ashline’s A Jacket Off the Gorge follows the coin caper and shares all the information she learned about the coins along the way. She says that maybe a reader can solve the mystery and find the coins, but if not, Ashline wants to expose the missteps and abuses by people in power, and raise questions about incarceration versus rehabilitation, and the lack of mental health treatment for offenders.
Seven years later, former crime reporter Ashline met and fell in love with Fontaine, not knowing the story of his crime. Ashline says Fontaine was “the very last thing from ‘charming.’” Susan Ashline She says he was soft-spoken, shy, and socially awkward, but also thoughtful and loving, with a hilarious sense of humor. When he told her a watered-down version of his criminal past, it seemed so far-fetched and outrageous Ashline couldn’t reconcile it with the man she knew. She decided he must be a changed man, and the past should stay in the past. Though law enforcement knew Fontaine as a master manipulator, Ashline did not. She says she felt completely safe with him, finding “no intuitive warning signs” at first. When she’d catch him in “minor manipulations” that were so obvious she found them amusing, he’d own up to them, so she just found him naturally human. However, she didn’t realize Fontaine was “manipulating [her] on a sub-level that went undetected.” During their romance, however, police charged Fontaine with stealing a collection of 116,000 ancient gold and silver coins from his stepmother’s Fairport, NY home. These foreign coins had been in her family for years. Fontaine refused to reveal the location of these coins, and the mystery remains unsolved. In 2012, several law enforcement agencies searched discreetly but unsuccessfully for the coins in northern Wayne County. Ashline explains that Fontaine’s method of operation was that if he suspected someone was going to authorities about crimes he may have committed, he went to authorities first, usually with manufactured evidence such as the jacket off the gorge in 2004, and convinced police his accuser was the perpetrator. The tactic had been successful because it took the heat off him. Unfortunately for Ashline, that’s how she found herself in an ambush interrogation and police standoff, where she says she was the only person who didn’t know she was in a standoff. Ashline says Fontaine’s revolving door of arrests ended in 2021, when he made news once again, after a series of horrifying events played out in Ontario County.
Ashline reflects that she “unwittingly fell in love with a narcissist and psychopath. Although my experiences with Jon were out of the norm – book worthy, even – many people find themselves in these relationships. Those are the people I’m hoping to reach; the people who need to know they’re not alone. I wrote about deeply personal and traumatic experiences, but if one person tells me it helped them in some way, then it was all worth it.” For a short time after the ordeal, Ashline felt leery of everyone she met, but she explains that humans are not wired to be so cynical, and it didn’t take her long to realize the mindset was not healthy. She says, “Human beings don’t enter relationships doubting everything a person says and does, and questioning who they are as a person. If someone takes advantage of our trust, that is a flaw in them, not us.” Susan is an Emmynominated journalist whose 2019 debut book, Without a Prayer: The Death of Lucas Leonard and How One Church Became a Cult, launched to national acclaim. In 2024, Jon Fontaine and Susan Ashline she will be featured in a in Windham, NY in 2011 Law and Crime Network documentary about that book. She’s currently working on her next book about a true crime story in the Utica area that made international news.
Ashline says her experience shows a systemic failure at every level of the criminal justice system. “No doubt there are people who work hard and care deeply about their work in the system. But

HOLIDAY SHOPPING FOR THOSE WHO SEEMINGLY HAVE IT ALL Consolidate memories. Technology continues to evolve, which means that the way music, videos and photos are captured and stored is always changing. Unless a person has older gear, it’s no longer possible to watch a VHS tape featuring a family member’s graduation ceremony or reprint photographs that are on film negatives. However, shoppers can work with a company that will transfer media onto a new format, such as a thumb drive or in a cloud-based account. This can be a heartfelt gift for someone who wants to reminisce.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Should an owner punish puppy after accident? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I bought a puppy a few weeks ago who was between 2 to 3 months old. Star is wonderful, and housetraining has been OK. But yesterday, he pooed in the hallway while we were out. My boyfriend says I need to push his nose into the mess and punish him. I don’t think that’s the right way to train a puppy. What do you think? -- Daria in St. Louis, Missouri DEAR DARIA: Your instinct is spot on, and you should trust it more. That’s the wrong way to train a puppy. It’s aggressive, negative and doesn’t teach the puppy anything -- except to be afraid. Young puppies are learning machines, picking up habits quickly -- both good and bad. They need to be constantly supervised to keep them safe and to correct them (not punish them) on the spot so they learn what they can and can’t do in the household. When they’re not supervised, I recommend placing them in a properly sized kennel crate. Think of it as a den for your puppy, a safe spot. Again, not a place to punish him. Furthermore, puppies need to pee and poo more frequently than adult dogs -- about four times daily at Star’s age, but sometimes more. It’s up to you to make sure their elimination schedule is adequate and that you are there to supervise them. Star couldn’t wait for you to get home, so he went in the hallway. That’s on you, not on Star.

Crew Leader and/or Crew Positions General labor skills with carpentry, insulation and minor home repair experience preferred.
Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.
