Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

HOMETOWN HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR Stock up on equipment A new home bar requires barware and glassware. Various drinks are best served in requisite glassware and prepared with the right equipment. A home bar will benefit from a muddler, jigger, cocktail shaker, strainer, ice cube trays, and bar spoon. Glassware can include short glasses, tall glasses and wine glasses with stems. Martini glasses provide a chic look and are practical for those who prefer cosmopolitans and martinis.
CHIMNEY/REPAIR CHIMNEY MAINTENANCE A PART OF HOME SAFETY Even though chimneys do not require daily upkeep, regular maintenance efforts help chimneys operate safely and prevent deaths and injuries while protecting homes from fire. Various problems can arise when chimneys are not well maintained. Such problems include chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and early failure of the chimney and heating sources that the chimney vents. Carbon monoxide can be scary, as it is virtually invisible without a proper detector. The National Vital Statistics System says that, in 2015, 393 deaths resulted from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States. When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it builds up quickly and combines with the blood, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. The Canada Safety Council says that body tissue and cells can’t function without oxygen. Chimney fires are another potential byproduct of poor chimney maintenance. The Chimney Safety Institute of America notes that chimneys expel the byproducts of combustion, including smoke, water vapor, gases, unburned wood particles, hydrocarbon, tar fog, and assorted minerals, which can condense on the inside of the chimney flue. The residue, called creosote, is highly combustible. With the right conditions, a chimney fire can occur.

HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs. Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates. COLD W EATHER W ILDLIFE IN HOM ES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAM AGE RISKS M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING GROWING TRENDS IN TODAY’S HOMES Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

Roof Leaks?
Decide how big an impact you want to make. Are you looking for color overload or just a small focal point of vivid color? Remember, using bold color doesn’t mean every wall must be lathered in that hue. Instead, select one wall to serve as an accent point and use that spot as your bold color display. Otherwise, rely on bold colors to dress up otherwise mundane areas, such as the back wall of a cupboard or moldings and trim.

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION Determine your motivation for renovating: Renovation projects often involve balancing needs and wants, and determining if a project is a necessity or a luxury can set the timeline and course of the project. Is the roof leaking? If so, immediate action is necessary. Could the kitchen be a bit more functional? If the kitchen is still manageable, a homeowner may be able to wait a little bit to get better prices on appliances or contracting services. Separating needs from wants helps homeowners map out a viable timeline that maximizes productivity and affordability. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Hungry, Hungry Hearing Aids
They screech like baby birds calling for their mother Feeding time They have worked hard all day Bringing me the joyous news from the radio: 19 cases in this county 105 cases in that The entire country is trying to "flatten the curve" As the world watches The stock market crashed Food is getting hard to find And we're just ending week one. Sudden Foot Pain After a Concert Becomes Debilitating
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter and her friend went to
Accepting New Patients.
a concert and had to climb stairs. They ended up walking about 2.5 miles in total. After returning home, my daughter had severe pain in both of her feet and was unable to stand or walk on them. She said it felt like someone was crushing them. The pain did not get better, so she went to the emergency room a few days later. A doctor there performed an X-ray and said that the pain was due to bunions, although they did not even look at her feet. She also saw a foot specialist who told her that the diagnosis was neuropathy of the feet and recommended Neurontin for pain. He asked her if she has diabetes, but she does not. They told my daughter that she will have to live in pain for the rest of her life. The doctor recommended getting some tests done on her nerves at the hospital, but she doesn’t have money to pay for these tests. What can be done to help her? How is it possible that the pain started so suddenly? She is in constant pain and is unable to walk. -- K.B. ANSWER: “Neuropathy” is not a diagnosis; it’s a name for a diverse group of diseases that cause damage to the nerves, specifically signifying the nerves in the brain and spinal cord or those outside of them. The recommendation of getting nerve testing done is correct. This does sound like neuropathy from the little bit of information I have, although neuropathies do not typically begin with exercise the way you described. I have seen several cases where muscles have become terribly inflamed and even break down after a period of unusually strenuous exertion (this usually gets better with time), but I would have expected the doctors to make that diagnosis. There is a compressive neuropathy in the foot (tarsal tunnel syndrome) where the nerve is damaged by pressure from muscles, bones and connective tissue, but this happening to both feet at the same time would be surprising. Metabolic neuropathies, like B12 deficiency, cause symptoms on both sides but do not begin suddenly. I’d be worried about her lower spine. I don’t know what your daughter’s financial situation is, whether she might be eligible for Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act, or whether there is a free medical clinic near you. I have had many patients make just enough money that they don’t qualify for Medicaid, but are unable to afford commercial insurance and don’t get it through work *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Little-known Facts About Abraham Lincoln In honor of Lincoln’s birthday, here are 13 facts about the man. 1. Towering over others at a height of 6 feet 4 inches tall, Lincoln remains the tallest president to hold office. It is likely his stature helped to present an air of authority during his presidency. 2. Lincoln had two romantic interests before he married Mary Todd in 1842. Lincoln was in a relationship with Ann Rutledge, who died of typhoid fever. He also courted Mary Owens for some time before they ended their relationship. 3. Lincoln was notoriously messy. His law office was often cluttered, much to the chagrin of his partner William Herndon. It is said Lincoln kept an envelope on his desk marked, “When you can’t find it anywhere else, look into this.” 4. Lincoln was the first president to be photographed at his inauguration. His future assassin, John Wilkes Booth, can be seen in a photo standing close to the president. 5. In 1849, Lincoln obtained Patent No. 6,469 for a device that was designed to lift and keep boats afloat when they passed over a sandbar or entered shallow water. Lincoln served as a ferry operator and flatboat pilot prior to entering politics. 6. Lincoln took his dreams seriously and was purported to be interested in psychic research and activities. Before his election to the presidency, Lincoln said he was startled by a vision of a double image of himself. The second image was pale, according to accounts. His wife was led to believe the vision meant Lincoln would be elected to two terms as president and die during the second. 7. Lincoln’s beard is almost as famous as the man. He was urged by advisors to grow a beard during his first term to soften some of his harsh features. 8. Lincoln was born to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks. Actor Tom Hanks is a distant relative of the former president. 9. Despite his stature, Lincoln apparently had a high-pitched voice and not a deep timbre. 10. Lincoln wore a size 14 shoe. 11. According to reports by his personal secretary John Hay, Lincoln would sometimes pace the White House because of insomnia. He would keep Hay up with funny stories or with readings of Shakespeare. 12. Lincoln accepted a challenge to a duel with James Shields, a state auditor. Lincoln chose a broadsword as the weapon, but Shields decided to work through his differences with Lincoln amicably rather than face him in the duel. 13. The contents of Lincoln’s pockets on the night he was killed were not revealed until February 12, 1976.

Karen Reichert: Dedicated Steward of Scandinavian Tradition in Rochester B Y J O D Y LY N N G R E E R
Karen (in red) with President Arnie Larsen, Zone 4 Director Kaare Hansen, Vice President Bill Gibbs, and Secretary Joan Callahan
T
he Rochester chapter of the Scandinavian Heritage Society (Sons of Norway), Lodge 3-433, holds a rich history within the United States and Canada. Embracing individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and origins, the society proudly represents every Scandinavian country. Welcoming those who share a deep appreciation for Scandinavian traditions, food, and culture, the society fosters a sense of unity among its diverse members. Among the passionate individuals contributing to the society is Karen Reichert, whose connection to Scandinavian heritage runs deep. Born to a Swedish mother and Norwegian father, Reichert has been actively involved with the Sons of Norway since 2004, though her early exposure dates back to 1949 when she came to the States as an infant with her parents and then-ten-year-old brother, John (Landro). The family met some Norwegians and started going to the group in 1950, she says. Since then, The Reichert family’s involvement in the Sons of Norway spans generations, with each member leaving a lasting impact on the organization. Despite growing up in American culture, Reichert ensured her children and grandchildren remained connected to their Nordic ancestry. Reichert’s children, Emma Pasterick of NJ, Brian Reichert of Dansville, NY and Amanda Hook of Georgia participated in Sankta Lucia events in their youth. Additionally, Amanda contributes routinely to Trollnytt. The Reichert grandchildren have all participated in annual Sankta Lucia events and are interested in learning to speak Norwegian. Reichert emphasizes the enduring presence of Scandinavian culture in her family’s homes, stating, “It’s in their DNA. They love their culture,” highlighting the legacy that was not left behind when the family migrated to America. For those not familiar with the Christian Sankta (Saint in Swedish) Lucia holiday tradition, Reichert explains, “When it first started, there was a famine in Sweden and [St Lucia] came as a vision over a frozen lake with a tray of buns and coffee with a crown of light.” While Sankta Lucia is traditionally celebrated as a Swedish tradition, its origins can be traced back to Italy before that. Reichert explains, “[Lucia] was a saint in Italy, then she was martyred, and she would bring hope to the people of Italy; for some reason her soul and her spirit came to Sweden.” Every year, the Scandinavian Heritage Society offers their take on the classic holiday tradition with their famous Lutefisk dinner. Lutefisk is a dried cod or whitefish beloved by many Scandinavians. 26 years ago, the Sons of Norway conceptualized the annual Lutefisk dinner featuring the beloved fish, Swedish meatballs, and delectable desserts.
At this year’s Lutefisk dinner in Rochester, Reichert was honored for her selfless dedication to the society. Volunteers like Reichert, who generously contribute their time and energy, play a crucial role in preserving cultural traditions for future generations. As treasurer, newsletter editor, and event organizer, Reichert plays a key role with Lodge 3-433. She manages the monthly Trollnytt newsletter that keeps members informed on upcoming events, historical facts, and trivia. In addition, nearly every member of Karen’s family has participated with the Sons of Norway, from previous St. Lucia and Lutefisk dinner events to the present day Trolnytt newsletter. Reichert acknowledges the improved status of Scandinavian countries globally and advocates for extending support beyond their borders. The Sons of Norway’s original concept, aiding new immigrants from Norway, has evolved to support other cultures. In 2022, for example, the society raised $1,200 at the Lutefisk dinner for Ukraine efforts. Helping those in need and specifically immigrants and refugees is a shared message amongst both Norse and American cultures, Reichert explains. Her own parents sought better opportunities and a fresh start in the United States, leaving behind memories of WWII Nazi occupation. Reichert embodies the goals Scandinavian Heritage Society and the shared American dream of many immigrants who want to escape wartorn countries, violent conflict, pursue educational opportunities, or simply follow the possibility of a better life. The Sons of Norway promotes philanthropy and support for global causes in addition to promotion of Scandinavian interests. For more information on the Rochester chapter of the Scandinavian Heritage Society (Sons of Norway), find them on Facebook for meeting and event details.

EXPLORE THESE BUDGET-FRIENDLY DESTINATIONS St. Augustine, Florida. Theme parks may be a big part of Florida’s tourist draw, but such parks can be expensive for families. Looking elsewhere in Florida for dream destinations that are easier on the pocketbook doesn’t take a lot of work. St. Augustine in Northern Florida is America’s oldest city and is packed with historical monuments, quaint shops and great dining. The city also sits a mere five miles northwest of St. Augustine Beach, which offers miles of shoreline to explore.

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS Use light wisely. The photography resource Expert Photography recommends taking photos primarily during the golden hours. These are right after sunrise and just before sunset. The light during these times of day has a softer, hazy quality that will illuminate subjects evenly and less harshly than midday, when shadows also may pose challenges. Taking photos during these times also means fewer people around and a better chance that wildlife will be out and about.
BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Elevator etiquette Please, when using an elevator, don’t stand directly right in front of the door and then try to rush in; there are people inside who need to get out first. This happens so much. I always stand to the side and then look in to see if anyone’s in there and when it’s clear, I get in. It’s not a pretty sight when you’ve got people trying to get in as people are trying to get out. Please use common sense.
Thank you I was in the Wegmans parking lot on Feb 2nd and this gentleman informed me that I had a flat tire. While I was sitting there trying to figure out what I was going to do, he came back with a machine to blow up my tire right there. I’m 88 years old, so this was a blessing from God. Thank you! Winter is so beautiful Winter is so beautiful around here. I’m so glad to see so many people using the Erie Canal towpath and the county park trails in all seasons (we’re from upstate NY after all; if we shelter inside whenever it’s under 40º, we’d miss so much of winter).
Use your phone To the people who complained about a restaurant being closed despite checking their website for the hours of operation, do not blame the restaurant. I’m sure the restaurant had a phone number. Did you think to call the restaurant? Folks, have you noticed people developing a communication phobia to the point of paralysis? With all the technology today there is less communication going on than there was 100 years ago. This couple probably pays over $100 a month to have their cellphone, yet they don’t use it for what it was originally designed to do.

Is Pet Sitting A ProfitableCareer?
Ruthy, a four-month-old Persian kitten, is a delightful companion with many playful ways.
Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com, Share With Us • Or mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m a high school student and I’m thinking about what kind of career I’d like to have after I graduate three years from now. I’m not sure college is for me, and I like being around pets -- my family has two dogs and a cat, and I have a flop-eared rabbit. I’ve heard that pet sitting is a good business to be in. Is this true? Can I do that instead of college? -- Caryn H., Fort Walton Beach, Florida DEAR CARYN: Pet sitting is a huge and growing market, because almost every owner is going to need someone to watch their pet at some point. So, it’s certainly worth considering as a career. You can start your own pet-sitting business or go to work for someone else. This is a job that requires responsibility and self-discipline, because people are entrusting you with their pets. You have to show up at the agreed-upon time, follow the owners’ instructions to the letter, and make sure their pets remain happy and healthy. If dog-walking is part of the job, you’ve got to keep them under control and away from conflicts with other dogs. You’ve got to stay healthy, because a sick day is not an option unless you have someone to cover for you. Start by visiting the websites of two major pet-sitting organizations: Pet Sitters International (petsit.com) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). They offer resources, certifications and more. Talk to your parents and your school guidance counselor about your interest. They’ll support you and help you explore this career option. HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD
Looking for:
Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.

PERSONALS HOLY SPIRIT: You who solves all problems, who lights all roads, so that we can obtain all goals; You who gives us the divine gift to forget all evils against us and that in all instances of our lives, You are with us. I want, in this short prayer to thank You for all things and to confirm once again that I never want to be separated from You; even in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with You in eternal glory. Thank You for Your mercy to me and mine. Say for three consecutive days, after the third day, favor will be granted even if it appears difficult. This prayer must be published without mention of favor. Thank you Holy Spirit. J.W. PRAYER TO THE Blessed Virgin (Never known to fail.) Oh, most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none who can withstand your power. Holy Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us, who have recourse to Thee. (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this in your hands. (3 times). Say this prayer 3 days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. Thank you Virgin Mary for answering my prayers. P.G.
