The planks are made from recycled materials that would normally end up in landfills. Products from Trex, a popular composite decking manufacturer, are made from 1.5 million shopping bags and wood mill waste. As composite decks do not rot away and are long-lasting, they will not need to be replaced frequently, which is another eco-friendly benefit. When comparing composite decking brands, look mainly at the colors, materials used in the composition and the fastening systems. Many are fastened with regular deck screws, offers This Old House. The newer systems have channels for hidden fastening, and the composite deck tiles snap into place.

In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day.

S E V RA Supporting LVOY Sincere thanks to everyone who came out for Literacy Volunteers Ontario + Yates 20th Annual Adult Spelling Bee! Teams, sponsors, and donors stepped up on Feb 6th for a fun event to support services for adults from Ontario and Yates Counties who receive literacy tutoring, help with English, and assistance preparing for a high school equivalency test. Thank you! Good People in Genesee County On February 14th in the Batavia Walmart, I was reminded that there are still good people. I was doing a bit of extra shopping. When I got in line to check out, I noticed a young man with only a few items versus my pretty full cart. I stated he could go ahead of me. He replied, "Thank you" and explained he had been working crazy overtime and just wanted to get a few items to surprise his woman. In the meantime, a woman with a little one in tow, got in line behind me with literally three items. I stated for her to go ahead of me as it was going to be a bit for me to unload my cart. As she was placing her three items on the conveyor belt, the young man was finishing his order. As he was leaving, he stated to the cashier "Give that $40.00 I have coming back to that woman right there." That woman was me! I expressed my thanks as I was not expecting that. So, as it says "One good turn deserves another. "It definitely applies here. Blessings are everywhere! Help During a White Out This is for the kind couple in the red pickup who led me out of a terrible white-out on River Rd. on Feb. 19th. I was in desperate need of help, so I prayed, and God sent you! You truly represent the goodness in all of us, and I hope the kindness you showed me will come back to you. I will always be grateful that you came along that day.

Choose One! You can’t have it both ways! So you’re saving the environment by not having plastic bags used? Smart choice! Okay instead use paper bags. Wait. You have to cut down trees for paper, but you don’t want that either. So now what? By the way California doesn’t ban plastic bags! So, now you go to the store in your half plastic car to buy your milk in a plastic jug. Don’t forget the bread in a plastic bag. Crackers, cereal, cookies are also in what? You guessed it: plastic. People think as long as it’s not in my backyard; I’m saving the world! Reality check: you are the problem. Uncommon Clarity The persons who posted “Common Concerns” and “We have Control” both made good points. First, we have to stop denying global warming - It’s happening. But its main cause is the planet’s actions (known as “Precession of the Equinoxes”) in which the earth moves from hot to cold and back again every 26,000 years. Has industrialization accelerated the warming? Probably. And there are things we can do, like reducing emissions and conserving energy. Windmills and solar panels may be unsightly to some, but oil rigs, pipelines, refineries, and power plants are far more unsightly, and add to our pollution. There should not be any plastic in our lakes, oceans, or other water ways. We can stop throwing our garbage onto the roadside. We can use paper wherever possible instead of plastic. These are things over which we have control. None of us is willing to give up electricity, or our cars (especially in a rural area), so we have to work to minimize our energy usage. Disappointed I am tired of trying to give my money to the local restaurant businesses around me. Every time I call, I’m told they’re out of this or that. I’m fully aware that Covid has affected every aspect of our lives, and the restaurant industry is no exception, but it’s been 2+ years. Adapt, whether it be by paying more for new hires or getting a vendor that will supply your ingredients. I grow weary of these excuses. I don’t want to go to a fast food place. Also, you’re [foolish] for thinking the environment doesn’t matter. Global warming is not fake news.

Pets Keep Owners Fit and Healthy

Lazy Days Our family has grown over the years, and we have become one big happy family! We have recently just moved to Brockport and have been enjoying our new home. These cold wintry days have turned into lazy days in front of the warm hearth. Looking forward to the nice dog days of summer ahead!

NEW WAY TO SAVE ALL SHELTER PETS (NAPSI)—The lives of nearly 733,000 cats and dogs could be saved with the help of caring humans and an innovative Web-based platform introduced this week by Best Friends Animal Society. Envisioned as a tool to help animal lovers help their communities save more pets, the new community lifesaving dashboard combines groundbreaking data visualization technology with the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published. Two years in the making, the tool crowdsources, validates and translates complex data about the dogs and cats in U.S. shelters.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Schedule Full Again? Not enough time in the day to do it all? Your beloved pets miss you and are not happy?

It brings an unprecedented level of transparency to the animal welfare movement, unlocking new opportunities for saving pets by providing a detailed picture showing precisely—on a city, state and community level—where cats and dogs need to be saved. For the first time, anyone with a smartphone or computer will be able to easily access his or her community’s snapshot of how many cats and dogs need to be saved and find tools to help individual shelters save more pets. The organization used independent research, government data and even FOIA requests to create the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published. Best Friends CEO Julie Castle says the investment in data was necessary to achieve the organization’s goal of bringing the whole country no-kill by 2025. “Up until two years ago, we didn’t even know how many shelters existed,” she said. “How can you possibly save all the animals if you don’t even know how many need to be saved?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve read that pets can keep seniors healthy, through reducing stress, etc. How does that work? -- Joel P., Fort Myers, Fla. DEAR JOEL: Researchers have found that seniors who own pets have a reduced rate of stress-related ailments, so they’ve theorized that having an animal companion helps seniors feel less alone and somewhat empowered as they care for a cat, dog, fish or other pet. The unconditional love and affection that pets provide can help their owners feel needed and important, and can help to enhance their quality of life. So, the simple act of caring for a pet can create a longer, happier life for many people. But there are more benefits to pet ownership. Owners are more likely to interact with other animal lovers. They tend to exercise more than pet-less people -- especially dog owners, who must take their pooches for frequent walks. Of course, if a senior doesn’t want a dog or cat, the idea shouldn’t be pushed. Owners must be able to care for, walk and feed their pets, and provide training and activities. Not everyone can meet these requirements. There also are financial considerations, such as regular veterinary care, food and medicine. An alternative to owning a pet is to visit one (or have one visit) occasionally. There are organizations across the United States that sponsor pet visits for seniors who love animals but cannot care for one full-time. These visits help provide some of the health benefits of pet ownership to those who otherwise would not receive them. If nothing else, take time out to say hello to the neighbor’s dog, or spend time with relatives and their pets. They’ll love the attention, and you’ll love the stress relief that pets can provide.

“With this data in hand, our goal to save every savable pet by 2025 is finally within reach,” Castle said.

The federal agency oversaw the transition of African Americans from slavery to freedom. The bureau was given power to dispense relief in the South, provide medical care and education, and redistribute “abandoned” lands to former slaves. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Poll Results 02-22-22 As tensions continue to mount between Russia and the Ukraine, many people, including President Biden, who has stated that Russian troops continue to be in a “threatening position.” If the situation between Russia and the Ukraine continue to escalate, what kind of impact will it have on U.S./Russian relations?

* Here’s an old tip, but a good one: Before going away on vacation, put a couple of ice cubes in a plastic baggie, and set it at the front of the freezer. When you return, if there is any evidence of melting, you will know you lost power while you were gone. If the bag is one big, flat cube, you lost power long enough to suspect all your refrigerator items of being spoiled. * To temporarily get a winter frost effect on a window, use this fun recipe: Dissolve 4 to 6 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a beer. When the salt is dissolved, dip a clean rag in the mixture and wipe it on your windowpane. As it dries, crystals will form, creating a frost effect. This is a great solution for a window you don’t want to be clear but also don’t want to permanently alter. The effect washes off with soap and water.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Beware of Ice The local television weather guy made an announcement recently that was, I think, meant to be uplifting. He said, “And winter is now half over!” Instead, I took it the other way: We still have half of this winter to get through. My main complaint this year is ... ice. It’s sneaky, it’s everywhere, it’s apparently invisible in the right circumstances, and yes, it’s slick. There I was, hauling a load of groceries out of the back of the car, having picked them up curbside from the store and arriving home after dark. One of the bags had fallen over and spilled its contents, requiring me to bend over and lean forward at the same time to retrieve the items that had rolled. Unbeknownst to me, my foot was on a piece of ice. I did not fall, but I did twist my leg in a way that legs are not meant to be twisted. Within an hour the pain hit. By Day 3 I was wondering if I’d broken something. Day 4 was a bit better, and I knew I was on the mend ... if only I could better plan my trips up and out of the recliner to fetch something instead of making multiple trips through the house for Kindle, water bottle, TV remote and more. Worse, I suppose, was that the cat was upset that she wasn’t allowed on my lap during those days. She sat, with a hurt expression, across the room from me for four days. I think there are multiple lessons to be learned from my brief foray into pain and incapacity, but the most important one is this: Schedule curbside grocery pickup for daylight hours. Don’t arrive home in the dark in the winter if there’s the slightest chance of ice. It will find you.

HOW TO AVOID MUSCLE SORENESS (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Muscle soreness can affect people from all walks of life. While exercise enthusiasts who work out several times per week may feel like they should be immune to muscle soreness, this potentially painful condition that can adversely affect quality of life can fell even the most ardent fitness fanatic. Those who find themselves routinely battling muscle soreness can employ the following tactics to feel better and enjoy the fruits of their labors in the gym. Listen to your body. Daily exercise can greatly benefit long-term health, but it’s important that men and women listen to their bodies, paying attention to any signs that it might be time for a break. Each person is different, but exercise aficionados who recognize any abnormal signs such as unexplained fatigue or cramps may need to take a day off. Bodies need time to recover after a workout. Get adequate sleep. Getting enough sleep provides recovery time. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. The NSF recommends adults 65 and older get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night. Don’t overdo it. Pushing a body too hard increases a person’s risk of injury or illness. Muscles that are overtaxed will very likely begin to feel a type of pain known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on muscle may lead to DOMS, but activities such as strength training exercises, walking down hills, jogging, step aerobics, and jumping are known examples of contributors to DOMS. Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them. Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out. Muscle soreness can be painful and difficult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago. Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.

Heat oven to 350 F. Drain onions well; pat dry. Spray shallow, oven-proof dish (34-cup size) with nonstick cooking spray. Place onions in dish. Press with spatula to flatten and crush. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon tomatoes, garlic, 2 tablespoons basil and black pepper, to taste. Drizzle with 1/2 tablespoon oil. Cut goat cheese into 6-8 rounds. Arrange over onion mixture. Sprinkle with remaining tomatoes; drizzle with remaining oil. Sprinkle with herb seasoning, if desired. This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

The Truth About Fasting Before Blood Tests ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter is a registered nurse, and tells me that when getting blood tests, it is not necessary to fast eight to 12 hours even though my doctor says to do so. Four hours is enough, she claims. Is this true, or is my daughter trying to be a doctor, if you know what I mean? --- L.C. ANSWER: I probably agree with your daughter the nurse more than I do with your doctor in this case. Most routine blood testing does not require fasting. There is controversy about whether cholesterol testing is best done fasting or not: Most recent evidence suggests that fasting is not necessary. However, many physicians still continue to use fasting levels, as that is what they are used to. Nonfasting numbers may reflect the true state of risk to the arteries more so than fasting levels. A few seldom-ordered tests, such as insulin levels, may need to be drawn precisely a certain period of time after feeding to be able to interpret them. In most cases, your daughter is probably right that prolonged fasting is unnecessary. I still recommend following your doctor’s orders. Your daughter is providing you with up-to-date medical knowledge. Any nurse or doctor should do the same. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it true that all orange juice is dangerous except organic? I heard on a radio show something about food’s having been contaminated by Roundup. The man said, “It’s in our orange juice.” It was said (I think) that only organic was safe. What do you think about this orange juice issue? -- J.J.V.S. ANSWER: I read the report showing that all orange juice brands tested positive for glyphosate, a commonly used herbicide, but one that is never applied to trees, in organic or conventional farming. The levels in the report, which was not published in a peer-reviewed journal, are extremely low, 3 to 17 parts per billion. The Environmental Protection Agency allowable level in citrus fruit is 500 parts per billion. The risk from glyphosate in orange juice is negligible. I don’t recommend large amounts of any type of fruit juice due to sugar content, which is a bigger threat than glyphosate, in my opinion. Stick to a glass a day. ***

FLU-FIGHTING TIPS TO KEEP YOU AND OTHERS HEALTHY Sniffles, sore throat, fever, and aches and pains may accompany a number of illnesses, but during the wintertime such symptoms are typically indicative of influenza. Throughout much of North America, flu season peaks between December and February. But flu season can occur anywhere from October to March, advises the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The flu is contagious and can sideline people for extended periods of time. The CDC says that each year one in five Americans gets the flu. Taking steps to fend off the flu can help men and women and the people they routinely come in contact with. Foods: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages. Flu shot and medications: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off. Stop germ proliferation: Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people. Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading. When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help. People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill. Rest and restore: Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus. People of all ages should take steps to protect themselves from the flu.

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

(NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers.

Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology

They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time.

The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent).

DID YOU KNOW? Testicular cancer is not common, but it does affect about one out of every 250 males at some point in their lifetimes, states the American Cancer Society. The average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is about 33. Unfortunately, the rate of testicular cancer, at least in the United States, increased over the last several decades, particularly in seminomas. It is important to note that testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully, so the risk of dying from the disease is very low. Still, it is important to discuss risk factors with one’s doctor, alerting physicians to any abnormalities in the testes or during urination, which may indicate a problem.

There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them. These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker. is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice. STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN Change your reading habits. E-reader enthusiasts may have access to millions of books at their fingertips, but that access could come at a steep cost. Distractions abound when reading books on tablets, smartphones and e-readers. The internet is only a swipe or two away when reading e-books, while print books provide no such access to the internet. Tablets and e-readers employ the he same notification system as smartphones, so readers who insist on going the digital route can turn those notifications off before cuddling up with a good book. But that might not be enough, as readers can still visit the home screen of their devices and begin browsing the internet. Print books are ideal for those who want to read with as little device-related distractions as possible.

HOW TO ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING Look for a new job or fresh income streams. A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Looking for R&R in the Finger Lakes? Visit Naples! BY JODI CARUSO

W

hat do you like to do for relaxation and recreation? Hiking? Horseback Riding? Yoga? Golfing? Kayaking? Camping? Doing something you truly love, such as fishing, can be very relaxing for both your mind and your spirit. Everyone needs enjoyable activities which offer a deep sense of relaxation to rejuvenate. The only question is where to find them. Look no further than Naples, NY! Go to Water When looking for a destination people are often drawn to localities that offer things to do to relax and things to do for recreation. Naples, NY, is surrounded by a host of activities that satisfy both relaxation and recreation. Naples is located on the southern end of Canandaigua Lake. The beautiful West River and Naples Creek offer an abundance of water activities for children and adults alike. Kayaking along the West River through three seasons each year is a source of spectacular beauty and can be a lazy float or a very active paddle covering many miles! The river winds along with many small tributaries, home to a delectable display of birds, sounds, flowers, and wildlife. American Bald Eagles, Great Blue Heron, Otter, Turtles, frogs, ducks, and many more may be visible during your travels. Where the West River flows into Canandaigua Lake, one will often find many boats entering the water for a day of fishing, water skiing, or a leisure cruise up the lake. The nearby Woodville Boat Launch is easily accessible for lake boats, riverboats, and kayaks. Boat rentals are also available! Seek the Waterfalls Just south of the West River and the boat launch is an entirely different way to enjoy the water surrounding Naples: waterfalls! Creek walking, waterfall climbing, and picnics Creekside are popular ways to enjoys these natural water favorites. Grimes Glen, a local attraction and tourist hot spot, is home to three waterfalls. Its foot trail continues for about ¬Ω mile, but after that be sure to have your water shoes as you must do a little creek walking to get to the first waterfall. The second waterfall features a nice swimming hole as well as a cave. Leashed dogs are abundant along the trail as are families, teens, and groups of hikers. This is a fairly easy hike, so if you are interested in a more challenging hike and perhaps a waterfall to climb, Clark’s Gully off of Route 245 is the waterfall trail for you! These are just a few of the waterfalls and trails around Naples! Horses, Hiking & Hi Tor Wildlife Management Naples is also home to many Horse Farms that offer riding lessons, trail and group rides, birthday parties, and more! Horseback riding from novice to experienced abound! Some of the horse farms also offer Birthday parties, group rates, and weekly lessons. Some businesses will even trailer horses to High Tor Wildlife Management Area for a ride through hundreds of acres of absolute beauty. Hi Tor Wildlife Management consists of approximately 6,800 acres. This WMA has numerous ecological habitats, steep hills, gullies, cliffs, and wetlands. It boasts two boat launches, plenty of trails, fishing, hiking, and more. With some of the most extensive hiking trails in the area, Hi Tor is an exciting destination for outdoor enthusiasts that want to relax fishing, walking, or hiking.

Ontario County Park boasts many pavilions, camping, three playgrounds, unlimited views in all directions, and it’s one of the best places in the area to fly a kite! Cumming Nature Center, which has been rated one of the best destinations for kids, is a living museum with hiking trails, beaver ponds, an educational center, snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals, Forest School, and educational classes. Check out one or all of them when you visit Naples! Food & Lodging There are over a hundred rentals in the Naples area, including cabins in the woods, houses on the lake or river, chalets overlooking the lake, full houses, tiny houses, houses in the Village, or houses high on the hill. Ontario Park also offers cabins and camping. Which rental makes you most relaxed. Do you want a hot tub, fire pit, wood stove, more bedrooms, solitude? Whatever you are looking for, you will find it! Whether for a family of ten or a cozy couple, Naples has what you are looking for to renew and relax. When you decide on the activities and secure a place to stay, you may ask, Where shall we eat? Naples has many eateries from small cafes to largescale restaurants. Some Delicious Local Food! - Larkin & Trevor restaurants are located at Wineries and Distilleries, some are in the village and others dot the countryside. There are also local farm markets, and a locally owned grocery store to fully stock your rental. So much awaits you and your family in the Naples. Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.
