PAW’S CORNER
Marta. April 20, 2012 October 20, 2020 Marta was a very friendly and loving girl. She was always so happy to meet new people and loved being with the ones she already knew. She was loved so much by many and will be missed dearly.

Does COVID Restrict Travel With Pets?
Body & Mind ____________________13
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m driving from New York to Colorado for a long-term contract job, and my two dogs will be coming with me. My roommate in New York is flying with my cat about a week later, because I don’t think my cat will do well on a long car trip (and I’m worried about her escaping). Are there any restrictions on pets traveling by plane or staying in hotels at this time? -- Beth G., Brooklyn

Give & Take ____________________12
DEAR BETH: It sounds like you’re doing your planning well in advance, and that’s great. Your dogs should be secured in the car while you’re traveling. Depending on their size and the type of car, they can be placed in a large kennel cage in the cargo area (with comfy beds, chew toys and access to water). Or they can stretch out on the back seat -- use a restraint device designed to keep dogs from sliding around the car or escaping from the vehicle. Many hotels are pet-friendly and have modified their cleaning procedures so that the hotel rooms will be clean and ready for the next guest. And more good news: Your friend and your cat can probably travel together in the airline cabin, as long as your cat is in a carrier (hard or soft sided) that will fit underneath the seat in front of your friend. (Some airlines are no longer shipping pets in the cargo area due to the disrupted flight schedules.) Book the airline seat with a pet option as soon as possible. Airlines allow a limited number of pets to travel in the cabin, even in a carrier. Those slots may fill up fast. Likewise for hotels: Book the rooms as soon as possible so that you know a pet-friendly room is waiting for you and your dogs.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY Examine your fireplace and chimney system to ensure that no soot or creosote has collected. Any cracks or voids could potentially cause a fire. Before you turn the furnace or boiler on, replace the air filter and hire a professional to inspect the unit more thoroughly. These steps will improve the efficiency and life of your furnace and will ensure stable indoor air quality.

HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Autumn days, particularly late autumn days, can be gusty, and strong winds can cause branches to fall off trees. Branches big and small can cause damage to cars, siding and roofs, and smaller branches can get clogged in gutters, potentially causing gutters to back up and leading to leaky roofs that damage a home’s interior. Take a walk around your property at least once per week during the fall, clearing any fallen limbs and trimming branches that appear one strong gust away from falling off of trees. Remove any branches that are hanging over your home and driveway so they don’t pose a threat to your house or vehicles.

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Homeowners may associate mulch with springtime lawn and garden care, but mulching in fall can benefit a lawn as well. According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against extreme temperatures, and not just those associated with summer heat waves. Mulch is often connected with its ability to help soil retain moisture during especially warm times of the year, when mulch promotes strong roots that can help lawns and plants survive periods of extreme heat. But when applied in the fall, mulch also inhibits freezing and thawing in winter, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured.

CPAP Could Help With Sleep Apnea ---
Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester
DEAR DR. ROACH: How are sleep apnea, sighing and heart failure related? Recently, I was told that I have severe sleep apnea and that I must use a CPAP machine. I have noticed that during the day I frequently take a spontaneous deep breath. Is that sleep apnea while awake? I have coronary heart disease and have three stents. Will the CPAP machine help me in any way? -- A.P. ANSWER: It’s complicated. By far, the most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens in people who are overweight, or in people whose neck anatomy predisposes them to the condition. During sleep, the upper airway collapses, preventing proper inspiration. This can be noticed by a sleep partner as choking, gasping or just not breathing for a prolonged time. The person eventually will wake up enough, due to lack of oxygen, to be able to take in a good breath, but will then fall back asleep. The process may happen hundreds of times a night, with the person often unaware. Sleepiness during the day (from never sleeping properly at night) and snoring are the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. A CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, which uses high pressure to keep the airway open, is the most common initial treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. In severe sleep apnea, the oxygen level in the blood can be so low for so long that the heart and lungs can be damaged, eventually leading to a type of heart failure of the right side of the heart. However, the situation is even more complex. People who have other kinds of heart failure, such as from repeated heart attacks, can develop the less common form of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea. Although this also may be treated by CPAP, it is critical to treat the underlying heart failure as well. Your doctor can tell you whether you have central or obstructive sleep apnea. Spontaneous deep breaths (sighs) are a part of normal human physiology. Sighs have several purposes, but the most important is to help keep the lungs properly expanded. Sighs might be more common in people with heart failure, but I do not know of any correlation with sleep apnea. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Are deodorants containing aluminum safe to use? The brands that do not contain aluminum are much less effective. I am concerned about absorbing the aluminum from the deodorant and its effect on the brain. -- D.M. ANSWER: That’s a myth. The amount of aluminum in antiperspirants is negligible. Deodorants that aren’t also antiperspirants don’t contain aluminum. The aluminum mechanically blocks the sweat glands in the armpit, and 99.99% of it is not absorbed into the body. Longterm studies of people taking aluminum-based antacid (which is also poorly absorbed) have shown no increased risk of dementia. The body has several ways of removing the small amounts of aluminum we absorb, mostly via the kidneys. Aluminum toxicity IS a potential problem for people with kidney disease on dialysis, but the small amounts of aluminum in antiperspirants is too small to worry about even in those cases. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned about the health effects of aluminum on the brain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Increase omega-3 fatty acids. It is well documented that fatty acids are good for brain health and cardiovascular well-being. But these acids also may help with allergies. A German study linked foods high in omega-3 fatty acids with the ability to fight inflammation, which is a hallmark of allergy suffering. Foods that are high in fatty acids include walnuts, flax, eggs, and cold-water fatty fish.

A Kind Gesture Goes a Long Way A few weeks back, my husband dropped his vehicle off for some work. Just prior to the business closing, they contacted him and stated they lost his keys, and the work did not get performed. As you can imagine, he was very upset. The next morning, we went to pick up his vehicle with our extra set of keys. (The business did offer to replace the key.) Later that afternoon, a kind and very thoughtful person knocked at our door with the paperwork and keys. We thanked him several times, but I wanted to share this story, because there are wonderful people out there, and they do make a lasting impression on others. He could have simply dropped them off to the place of
service, but he knew that key fobs are very pricey to replace. You went above and beyond! Thank you for renewing my hope in the human race.
Bad Driveway Recently, I had my driveway black topped. Before it was started, I asked the owner, who came out and gave me the estimate, if it was going to be a smooth finish. He assured me it would be. After I got it done, it was not a smooth finish. You can see all the stones almost as if it wasn’t rolled enough. It had a couple holes in it, and now there’s even grass growing up through it. The driveway is not even close to being level or a pitch away from my garage. I also said I didn’t want any rain coming into it and again was assured it would not happen. Guess what? I’m getting a lot of water into my garage now. Also, when they were rolling the driveway close to my garage, they damaged the trim and left. Now, they won’t fix that either.
To Daycamper In response to your annoyance with “noisy” neighbors who are bothering you with lawn mowing, power tools, etc.: Did it occur to you that the reason your neighbors are so noisy is because they can’t go anywhere! Due to Covid-19, everyone was stuck at home all summer for the most part. There were no vacations or festivals or carnivals or any kind of entertainment available the entire summer. I know we took advantage of the home time by doing home improvement projects and so on, and I’m sure we were probably noisy, as well. You can’t fault your neighbors for living their lives. Perhaps if you are so bothered by neighbors, you should consider relocating to the country away from all those annoying people.

I agree! To the person who responded to Daycamper who complained about noise: I wholeheartedly agree with your logical comments. What gives lately? Neighbors complaining about noise.... having something to say about music and everything else. They need to wake up and smell the roses and stop pointing a finger. They need to get a life or move in the country where they will only be able to hear their own noise. I feel sorry for people like that who are apparently so lonely and unhappy that they have nothing better to do than to complain about trivial matters.

Bears & Dolls Join the Fight Against Childhood
Cancer
BY AMANDA DUDEK
S
eptember is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. If you didn’t know that, you are not alone. Lynne Stiefler of Henrietta, a retired pediatric oncology nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital, is working to change that both by bringing joy into the lives of children battling cancer, as well as by bringing awareness of their Lynne Stiefler struggle to others. As a senior level bone marrow pediatric nurse and educator, Stiefler had interacted with many children fighting cancer and their families. After retiring, she continued to connect with them and felt she had to do something to encourage these brave children. So, in 2013, Stiefler launched Cure Bears for Hope and Love. She purchases Build-a-Bears, each with an outfit, and sends each one to a child who is in active treatment for cancer. “About 2,500 bears have been sent out across the country to date,” she shared. They have been sent to children in all 50 states; however, we try to stick with the lower 48. We do concentrate within our own area and deliver them locally, as well.” As requests for the bears grew, so did support. “People connect with me to support what we do,” said Stiefler, noting that Cure Bears is not an official nonprofit. “It is also popular for people to return their cans and bottles at Upstate Bottle Return locations in Avon, Henrietta, Brockport, Caledonia, Holley, Medina, Albion, Greece, and Penfield. They simply state the returns are in support of Cure Bears, and we receive a check from them. We raised about $5,000 in 6 months.” Stiefler knows from her nursing experience the positive effects such a simple gift can have. “The bears often go through treatment with the child,” she Little girl hugs her Cure Bear! explained. “One five-yearold, little girl from Nebraska dressed her bear like a superhero when it was going in with her for chemo or radiation. When they were doing other things, she dressed it in ordinary clothes. She said the bear was only a superhero when it was fighting cancer. How incredible for a five-year-old to say that!” Last year, Stiefler added something new. In September 2019, Wal-Mart released My Life as Survivor dolls, a doll similar in style to American Girl dolls, but created to resemble a girl who has undergone treatment for childhood cancer. Stiefler began purchasing and gifting these dolls to children in Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Canada. When she brought one for a friend’s daughter in Kentucky, she soon received requests for more. “Originally, Wal-Mart had only planned on producing this doll as a special edition from September 2019-September 2020, in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness month,” said Stiefler. “I started a petition to keep the dolls in production. Wal-Mart saw my petition, and one of their executives along with a representative

from the company which manufactures the doll reached out to me. They said they now planned to continue producing the Survivor doll and said they would like to send me some.” Then, COVID-19 brought our country to a near standstill. “With the pandemic, I hadn’t heard from them, and I honestly only expected a few,” said Stiefler. “Wal-Mart sent us 50 to deliver. I was wowed! They have all been delivered, My Life as Survivor doll and we have probably sent over next to a real life hero! 250 at this point. These dolls are a good thing. They give a child something with which to identify when they lose their hair.” The response to the dolls has been incredible. “We are typically limited to shipping in the continental US due to costs,” explained Stiefler. “One mother contacted me and explained that her daughter was in treatment. She asked me if I would consider sending her daughter a Survivor doll, but she was in South Africa. Fortunately, she had a friend in the United States with an address to which I could send the doll. That friend sent the doll to this little girl, and the little girl was so excited. There are so many photos I have received of happy children who have received our bears and dolls.” Lynne Stiefler hopes she will be able to continue - Lynne Stiefler sending Cure Bears and Survivor dolls to children and their families. “These are a tangible reminder that no child is fighting cancer alone,” she said. “With the pandemic, these children are more isolated than ever before. They really love getting something in the mail. Right now, it is even more meaningful.” To learn more or to donate, visit Cure Bears for Hope and Love on Facebook.

SHOPPERS SAVE BIG ON GROCERIES WITH HEALTHY SAVINGS® POWERED BY AARP FOUNDATION (NAPSI) — Good nutrition is important at any age. But for older adults on a tight budget, regular access to nutritious foods can be limited—and expensive.
How satisfied are you with the results of the 2020 elections?
A new program aims to change that by making it easier to get healthy foods at the local grocery store for an affordable price. With Healthy Savings® powered by AARP Foundation, shoppers pay a small fee of $4.99 per calendar year for a card that can save them up to $200 a month on groceries.
• Very satisfied • Somewhat satisfied • Neutral • Somewhat dissatisfied • Very dissatisfied
The program is part of AARP Foundation’s work to help people over 50 with limited income eat more nutritious foods, ultimately improving their well-being. Research shows that more than 10 million older adults don’t get enough nutritious food on a daily basis, most often because they can’t afford it. Eating healthy is about more than affordability, however. Not only does Healthy Savings reduce costs, it also identifies healthy options in the store. All products available through Healthy Savings are scored against the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index to make sure they qualify as nutritious. The index makes it convenient to choose the healthiest foods, which include lean meats, eggs, yogurt, whole grains, and a wide range of other options.
Poll Ends 11-10-20 Results From 11-03-20
The typical over-50 diet scores low in key food groups like whole grains and dairy. By encouraging the purchase of more of these nutrients through coupon discounts, Healthy Savings can help older adults:

• Lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. • Reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. • More easily manage a chronic disease. • Increase or maintain energy levels.

Shoppers who sign up for Healthy Savings receive a card in the mail and can download a mobile app, both of which can be used at 22,000 grocery stores across the U.S. for instant savings at checkout. The savings come on top of any from store loyalty cards and manufacturers’ coupons (so long as coupons don’t add up to more than the price of the item).
We love hearing from you! Vote and make your voice heard!
Each week, new coupons are automatically loaded onto the card and app—no coupon clipping required. Over the course of a year, Healthy Savings can save shoppers as much as $2,400. More information, including recipes and tips for shopping smart, is at aarpfoundation.org/save.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Social Security Increase for 2021 The news is out. Our Social Security benefit increase starting in January 2021 will be less than it was for 2020. Instead of the 1.6% increase we received this year, they're cutting us back to 1.3% for Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income. For the average recipient, this comes to a whopping $20 per month. The average benefit will be $1,543 per month and $2,596 for a couple. The retirement earnings test exempt amount will change in 2021 as well. If you're not yet at full retirement age, the annual exempt amount will be $18,960 per year. During the first year you reach full retirement age, the limit will be $50,520 per year (before the month you reach that age). The way this is supposed to work is that when the annual inflation rate goes down, our cost of living adjustment also goes down. We allegedly don't need as much money to get through the month. (Although the cost of our groceries has gone up, the price of gas has gone down because no one is going anywhere now.) The Senior Citizens League guesstimated correctly a few months ago that our increase would be 1.3% -- the second lowest increase ever. Meanwhile our Medicare Part B premium continues to climb. The good news there is the "hold harmless" clause in the regulations. If the Medicare premium rises enough that it overtakes our Social Security increase, the dollar amount of the Part B premium will be reduced so we don't end up with fewer Social Security dollars than we received this year. This applies to most but not all of us. Keep an eye on the Senior Citizens League (seniorsleague.org). They fight for us when it comes to drug costs, veterans benefits, Medicare, Social Security and more. They're in Alexandria, Virginia, right across the river from Washington, D.C., and the halls of Congress.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

PERSONALS PRAYER TO THE Blessed Virgin (Never known to fail.) Oh, most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none who can withstand your power. Holy Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us, who have recourse to Thee. (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this in your hands. (3 times). Say this prayer 3 days and then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. P.G. HOLY SPIRIT: You who solves all problems, who lights all roads, so that we can obtain all goals; You who gives us the divine gift to forget all evils against us and that in all instances of our lives, You are with us. I want, in this short prayer to thank You for all things and to confirm once again that I never want to be separated from You; even in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with You in eternal glory. Thank You for Your mercy to me and mine. Say for three consecutive days, after the third day, favor will be granted even if it appears difficult. This prayer must be published without mention of favor. Thank you Holy Spirit. J.W.
