DID YOU KNOW? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says preteens and teenagers need four vaccines to protect against serious diseases: meningococcal conjugate vaccine to protect against meningitis and bloodstream infections; HPV vaccine to protect against cancers caused by the human papillomavirus; Tdap vaccine to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough; and a yearly flu vaccine to protect against seasonal flu.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* Banks employ therapists known as wealth psychologists who help ultra-rich clients unable to mentally cope with the guilt they feel over their immense wealth, advise on inheritance issues and counsel parents on how to raise children who aren’t spoiled by money.

* Tyromancy is the practice of predicting the future with cheese.

* Hershey’s Kisses take their name from the kissing sound deposited chocolate makes as it falls from the machine to the conveyor belt.

Here’s a Tip

* Soak your metal tools in Coca-Cola when they get gummed up. It does a great job of loosening the gunk, and a er a few hours in a Coke bath, you can almost just brush stuff right off. Makes you wonder about drinking it, but whatever works!

* To make a cottage cheese dip, blend it in your food processor until smooth and add your dip flavoring packet or season with flavors as you would sour cream.

* If you have a tablecloth that is stained, you might be able to salvage it into napkins or a table runner. You can edge it with a pretty and complementary fabric to spice things up a little.

It is the first mild day of March:

Each minute sweeter than before...

There is a blessing in the air, Which seems a sense of joy to yield

To the bare trees, and mountains bare, And grass in the green field...

We from to-day, my Friend, will date

The opening of the year.

Love, now an universal birth,

From heart to heart is stealing,

From earth to man, from man to earth:

—It is the hour of feeling.

PAW’S CORNER

Cat Walking…

Beneficial or not?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a neighbor who puts both of her cats on leashes and walks them through the neighborhood each day. Shouldn’t they be outside on their own, prowling and doing cat stuff? Sign me -- Concerned Cat Mom in Providence, Rhode Island

DEAR CONCERNED: As long as the cats aren’t distressed by the leash, I don’t see a problem.

Some cats are completely uninterested in exploring the world outside, and some are downright fearful of it. And that’s totally fine. Others, however, want to be outside every chance they get.

Letting cats wander outside puts them at risk of being struck by a car, attacked by wildlife or feral cats, or contracting an illness. Cats can be a menace to other creatures, so much so that there’s evidence they are impacting the bird population. Songbirds are already under threat from climate change and bird flu (which spreads just as easily among wild birds as it does on chicken farms), so adding another predator to the list is not a good thing.

Putting a cat on a leash (and in a harness, rather than a collar) is a great way to help them explore while keeping them safe. It’s also helpful when taking your cat on long car trips -- they can stretch their legs safely at rest stops.

For those who’d like to try walking their cat, buy a harness that fits your cat. Cats won’t like the harness at first; put it on and just let them get used to it while you hold the leash loosely. Make it a positive experience with lots of treats. Once they start exploring comfortably with the harness on, walk around with them, guiding them. Don’t tug on the leash or drag them. Pick them up if they won’t move, but always keep it positive.

WAYS TO IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALL YEAR LONG

As winter wears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold weather climates to experience some cabin fever. Winter weather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear.

In addition to contributing to cabin fever, winter weather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. While air pollution is something most often associated with densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long winters when windows are often closed for months at a time. Though open windows in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are ways to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of which season it happens to be.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS

Removing snow from a roof can be a dangerous prospect. Always use the appropriate equipment, which includes telescoping poles, rather than climbing on slippery roofs. This may be a job best left for a professional, who will have fall-arrest systems and nonslip safety boots.

Andsobydegreesthewinterwore away... and the chill, bitter, windy, early spring came round. The comic almanacks give us dreadful pictures of January and February; but, in truth, the months which should be made to look gloomy in England are March and April. Let no man boast himself that he has got through the perils of winter till at least the seventh of May.

HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS

(NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes withthechanceof severeweatherandan increaseinfirerisks.AccordingtotheU.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season.

“Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.”

Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks:

• Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work.

• Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month.

• Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them.

• Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them.

• Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family.

• Keep portable generators outside and away from the home.

• Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home.

• Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year.

• Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source.

• Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets.

• If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequatelywateredandgetridof itafter Christmas or when it gets dry.

Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departmentsacrossthecountryarelooking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members.

“The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.”

Training is provided by the department, and volunteers can serve in a variety of roles, from providing life-saving emergency response services to conducting fire prevention programs and disaster preparedness planning.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES

When working at home, make sure to use tools in the manner in which they were designed. Keep power cords tidy so they do not pose a tripping hazard. Falls from ladders often occur when climbing above the recommended rung or engaging in risky behavior while on the ladder, such as reaching or hanging over too far.

When outdoors, exercise caution in inclement weather, which can make it harder to work safely. Be sure there are no bystanders too close when using power tools or tools that can kick up debris.

LOW-COST WAYS TO REVAMP LIVING AREAS

Establish the budget. Homeowners should figure out how many dollars they can designate to a living room makeover before purchasing supplies or hiring out the work. Figure out the scope of the remodel, visit stores or suppliers to price out materials, get estimates from contractors, and then plan for some unforeseen circumstances along the way to determine if this type of renovation is affordable. If not, scale things back until the project more closely aligns with your budget.

HOW TO MAKE OLDER HOMES MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT

Add insulation. Many older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation was not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case with older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold growth and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, crawl spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and water pipes. Cover your water heater with an insulated water heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the water.

VENT BRIGHTER

How Two Strangers Brightened My Demeanor

Cigarette butts

It was a cold rainy day and at age 82, I didn’t want to drive on 490 in heavy traffic to Rochester General Hospital from my home to visit my wife of 59 years. I took an Uber ride. I struck up a conversation with the driver, Mike, for the 15 minute drive. He was a good conversationalist, stating he had retired in the past year. He was driving part-time to work for another year to save more money for he and his wife’s dream vacation to Aruba. I told him how happy I was for him. Then at 8PM visiting curfew hour came and I got another Uber. This time it was a woman in her late 30’s. In our talk she stated that she had 3 children, ages 8,11 and 14 but she was divorced. Unbelievably she worked a full-time job in the day and part-time at Uber three nights a week for 4 hours each night. When she got me to my home I told her to just wait in the driveway. I gave her a bottled water and an apple. Life is not easy.

Featured Media Staff to the Rescue

I often see people standing outside smoking a cigarette and then they either just throw it on the ground or throw it down in the drains. I often wonder if they think by throwing it in the drain they’re doing us a favor. But they’re not. There’s toxic chemicals, Arsenic and Lead that will be released into the environment and contaminate our water. I don’t know about you, but I like drinking clean water and breathing clean air. You would think everybody would want to drink clean water.

Cell Phones

I want to recognize & commend the extraordinary efforts of your publication’s Featured Media staff, specifically Jenna for going the extra mile in assisting me with the printing and on-time delivery of photo Christmas cards. Although I thought I was allowing enough time to upload & submit my choice photo for printing of the cards, my inadequacies in properly doing so (I am somewhat tech-challenged) presented difficulties to the graphic design staff. But with Jenna’s patience & perseverance she was able to not only work her magic in getting the cards printed successfully, she also apologized (though not at all her fault) for the delay, and ended up expediting the shipment for delivery. Kudos.

(By the way, why have the former Raves/Rants columns been replaced by the far-less-catchy terms “Brighter/Vent”?)

If you’re going to stand and talk on your cell phone, please don’t stand next to the crosswalks or have a social discussion there either. If you’re going to be on your phone, at least move further away instead of remaining there.

INFLUENTIAL

JAZZ MUSICIANS

Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

Mr.

ABlanche Stuart Scott: Rochester’s Aviation Pioneer and ‘Tomboy of the Air’

melia Earhart is o en the most recognizable woman in aviation, researched by schoolchildren across the country and perhaps the world. Her cross-Atlantic solo flight was impressive for anyone at the time, male or female, and she was an amazing individual in the industry.

However, America’s first female aviator is Rochester’s own Blanche Stuart (“Betty”) Scott. Born April 8, 1885, Scott loved spending time outdoors, bicycling and exploring. Despite her mother’s attempts to “transform her into a lady” in finishing school, Scott was, as she described herself, “a screwball” and “a cocky kid of 18,” so that didn’t work. Sean Dobbin of the Rochester D&C says Scott “[eschewed] her finishing school lessons in favor of the latest technologies.”

Scott was a firm believer in women’s self-sufficiency, and Scott said “women should wake up and take serious, intelligent, articulate interest in what makes the world tick.” Fittingly, Scott, an avid automobile enthusiast, started driving around Rochester at age 13. She supposedly “terrorize[d] the city streets to the point where the city council attempted to ban her from driving,” as the Federal Aviation Administration’s Hannah Chan reports. However, such a ban couldn’t stick because there were no age or gender driving restrictions.

In 1910, according to the FAA, Scott hopped in an Overland roadster nicknamed “Lady Overland” and made the 5,500-mile road trip across the US. Traveling from New York City to San Francisco in 68 or 69 days, depending on the source, Scott said she made the trip “purely for pleasure and educational value,” but also said that “women who have cars are too dependent on men … or their chauffeurs.” ough critics thought Scott would not be able to handle the mechanical issues of such a long journey, Scott was determined to prove them wrong.

In that land adventure, Scott became the first or second (again, depending on the source, but those who claim Scott as second name another Rochester-born woman, Alice Huyler Ramsey, as the first) woman to drive across the contiguous US. On the way, she saw her first airplane, originally “thinking these people flying were idiots, not realizing [she’d] be doing the same thing three weeks later” (FAA). Scott made news with that road trip, and a member of the Glenn Curtiss Exhibition Company of Hammondsport, NY connected with her to learn to fly. Despite no formal training for aviators (who only received verbal instructions on the ground, evidently) and widespread discrimination against women at the time, in 1910 Scott mostly taught herself, and she never looked back.

With her first public flight with the company, the first professional appearance of a female US aviator in Fort Wayne, IN, Scott began (or continued) a career of firsts. She set long-distance flying records for women in 1911, and performed the lead role in e Aviator’s Bride, the first film about flying. In 1912, she became the first female test pilot in the US and performed in many exhibitions across the western US, becoming the US’ first female stunt pilot, gaining the nickname as the “Tomboy of the Air.”

In 1913, a Memorial Day crash took Scott out for a year, a er which she flew only a few times before retiring from active aviation in 1916. According to the FAA, she retired “because of the lack of opportunities for female engineers and mechanics [and because she] was bothered by what she perceived as the public’s disturbing interest in air crashes” instead of the sheer wonder of human aviation.

In retirement, Scott dove into screenwriting and radio, even writing and producing her own radio shows under the alias “Roberta.” Her passion for flying continued, though, and in 1948, she became the first female passenger to ride in a jet plane, a TF-8oC, and she received honors from the US Aeronautics Association in 1953.

In 1954, Scott began consulting with the US Air Force Museum, helping acquire $1M+ of early aviation artifacts for the museum. e Antique Airplane Association honored the 50th anniversary of her first flight in 1960, and the US Postal Service commemorated her achievements with a stamp in 1980.

In 2005, Blanche Stuart Scott was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame, whose reports declare Scott “a pioneering aviator of indomitable spirit of adventure.” May we all remember this incredible Rochesterian whose strong will and determination allowed her to break barriers and follow her passion.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

High Troponin Levels Follow After Bout of Food Poisoning

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old male who apparently suffered a case of food poisoning. I say apparently because no cause was ever discovered for the uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea that lasted for a whole day and recurred briefly the following morning. A trip to the emergency room involved many tests, but nothing turned up except a troponin level well over 0.04 ng/mL, which prompted an angiogram that didn’t reveal any problems with my heart. What else might have caused my high troponin level? -- Anon.

ANSWER: A troponin level is a standard blood test usually used to evaluate patients for heart attacks. However, newer, highly sensitive assays have proven that tiny levels of troponin may be detected in nearly everybody.

A level above 0.04 ng/mL is often used as the cutoff for the “normal” range, but depending on the assay and population studied, a few healthy people may have levels above this. People with heart attacks may have troponin levels in the hundreds or thousands. The higher the troponin level, the more muscle damage there is. The fact that your coronary arteries don’t show any blockages is very good news. Other types of heart damage may also cause a high troponin level, including inflammation of the heart (myocarditis) and heart failure. Also, critical illnesses can cause high troponin levels (at much higher levels than you may have had) in people who don’t have heart blockages. (A median of 0.57 ng/ mL was found in people with septic shock.)

I found a long list of reported causes behind elevated troponin levels, but gastroenteritis was not on the list. I suspect your body was working so hard to fight off the infection without enough fluid that your heart needed more oxygen-carrying blood than it got, leading to tiny amounts of injury to the heart muscle despite normal heart arteries. You can lose a lot of fluid with vomiting and diarrhea, and people at age 77 don’t have as much reserve as they did when they were younger.
