PREPARING FOR A NIGHT OUT
Make a reservation. If dining out is in the plans,be sure to call the desired establishment in advance to see if they are taking reservations and learn if any restrictions are in place. There’s a good chance indoor dining establishments will still be subject to reduced guest capacity, and even restaurants that had walk-in service may now require advanced notice of dining parties, no matter how big or small.

DID YOU KNOW?
If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitnessexpertssaythatgardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many caloriesas30minutesofaerobics.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other
I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS
Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE
Cost: Perhaps no variable affects senior homeowners’ decisions to downsize their homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizing to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premiums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* When packing cookies in a single layer, I trace the shape of my container on parchment paper using the lid as a template. It’s pretty easy, and it fits exactly.
* Keep a small wastepaper basket or shredder near your entrance if possible. You can get rid of paper items you don’t need (think, junk mail) before it even makes it into the house. This is especially important if you tend to let things pile up, like I do! -- R.F. in Louisiana
* For scratch paper, I use the back side of my kids’ extra art pages. We choose the best to display, then they chop up the rest into small booklets, which they staple at the top. And we have notepads! -- M.L. in Iowa
* Keep a map or globe in your family or TV room. This way, when a place is mentioned on the news or in another program, you can find it on the map. This is a great thing to do with kids, but it’s handy and worthwhile for anyone. -- via email
* If you have a very stinky trash can, scrub it with a paste made from baking soda and just a bit of water. It works as a mild abrasive. Then fill a spray bottle with plain white vinegar and spray. It should foam for a moment. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then rinse well with hot water. Clean and deodorized!
* We have large buckets that store random toys on our back porch. It seems that whenever we’d touch the buckets to get a toy, a horde of mosquitoes would erupt. There’s no water, so we didn’t know what to do. And we didn’t want to douse it with chemicals, as it’s filled with kid stuff. A neighbor suggested we put a few dryer sheets in each one, and they really have worked. I guess the bugs don’t like the smell!

Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!” ~ Robin Williams
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Cipro Prescription No
Longer the First-Line Treatment for UTIs
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with a UTI on my yearly physical urinalysis, but I had no symptoms. I was prescribed Cipro. The five pages of warnings attached to the prescription scared me! So, I checked the FDA and Mayo Clinic websites. Both said that the “risks outweigh benefits” and it “should not be the first choice to treat a UTI.” But my doctor says to take it, so I will -- 500 mg twice a day for seven days.
Possible side effects include tendon ruptures (including the aorta), nerve damage and more. Scary! I am 71 and in good health with high blood pressure as my only problem, but it’s under control. I wasn’t told if my UTI is complicated or uncomplicated, but I assume uncomplicated, as my blood work, including kidney tests, were all normal. Is this drug safe? Why does the FDA say not to prescribe this as the first choice? -- C.J.
ANSWER: There is a lot wrong here.
First off, asymptomatic bacteria in the urine does not normally get treated, so I wouldn’t have recommended treatment in the first place. I’m not even sure why your doctor ordered a urinalysis -- it’s not recommended as a screening test for most.
Second, I agree with your research that ciprofloxacin (Cipro) should not be the first-line treatment for symptomatic urine infections. Ciprofloxacin does increase risk of tendon rupture very slightly (three to four cases per 100,000 people treated); may damage the aorta (eight cases per 100,000 in one study, while another large study showed no risk); and may cause neuropathy in one case per 150,000.
Resistance to drugs like ciprofloxacin has been increasing. Other choices, like nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole or cephalexin, have more effectiveness with less risk of toxicity. That’s why Cipro is no longer a first-line choice. But it can be hard for doctors to unlearn behaviors.
Usually, Cipro is effective and doesn’t cause side effects, but practicing evidence-based medicine means changing behaviors to reflect new information, even if your personal experience has generally been good. An individual doctor isn’t likely to see damage to tendons, aorta or nerves, but if all doctors changed their behavior, there would be even fewer of these rare events.
When it is used, a short course of ciprofloxacin is normally prescribed for three days, not seven, for uncomplicated urine infections in women. The less a person uses this drug, the lower the risk of these rare but severe side effects. Three days is normally sufficient.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
Can Cats Eat Easter Eggs?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We were coloring Easter eggs a few days ago, and our cat Jake kept begging underneath the table. Now that we’ve got lots of le over boiled eggs, I’m wondering if it would be safe to mix a few into his food? -- Sarah L., Panama City, Florida
Dear Sarah: Because they’re hardboiled, it’s completely safe to feed some egg to Jake. Just remember to peel the shell o rst!
Eggs are a healthy protein that cats can eat. e American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that they always be cooked. Feeding raw egg to a cat can make it sick due to the potential for bacteria or other pathogens that are on the shell to transfer to the egg.
Whether the cooked egg is boiled, scrambled, poached or microwaved doesn’t matter. Don’t add seasonings to the egg, though. Salt, pepper and other spices can upset a cat’s small tummy.
If you’ve never fed eggs to Jake before, only give him a small amount at rst. Add a teaspoon to his regular food or to the side of his dish. Monitor his behavior a er he eats the egg. If he has an allergy to eggs, he may scratch excessively, act agitated or throw up. If he seems ne, you can give him more next time.
Here’s a cool nding about eggs and cats: Researchers at Purina reported in 2019 that coating a cat’s food in a special egg powder formulation helped stop people from having an allergic reaction to cats! A protein in cats’ saliva is responsible for 95% of cat allergies in people. Not surprisingly, Purina has developed an entire product line of cat food based on this nding, called LiveClear. So, if you su er from allergies around cats, this might bring some relief.

SUNDAY, MAY 14TH
Dining out can be a treat. A meal at a favorite restaurant can be a welcome change from kitchen duty. Mother’s Day is a busy day for restaurants, many of which have limited menus to better handle the crowds. As a result, if dining out on Mother’s Day, Mom may not get the full menu she desires. To ensure mothers have full menus at their disposal, gift givers can cook a meal at home on Mother’s Day and then choose another day of the week to enjoy a meal in an upscale restaurant.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM
• 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf
• 2 cups half-and-half
• 4 egg yolks
• 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2)
1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
Serves 4 toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.
3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.
4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.
Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.
Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

HF-L Girl Scout Troop First in State to Work Toward STREAM Girl Badge
BY SUZIE WELLS
We get one Earth, so shouldn’t we try to retain its natural beauty and resources for as long as we share it? A local Girl Scout troop partnered with Trout Unlimited and the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation to learn about and become stewards for water conservation.
Sixth Grade Troop 61011 of Honeoye Falls-Lima is the rst troop in New York State to work toward the STREAM Girl badge. In this program combining Science, Technology, Recreation, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STREAM), the girls learn to observe a local stream as scientists, anglers, and artists, so they become more informed citizens of their watershed.
Lindsay Agness, Vice President of Youth Education at the NYS Council of Trout Unlimited, and New York State Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame inductee, said she was a Pen eld Girl Scout many years ago, so when she retired last June, she wanted to work with a GS troop in the area to complete the STREAM badge. Agness says she’s so happy to work with Troop 61011.
Over the course of multiple sessions, Trout Unlimited volunteers led the Girl Scouts in observing a stream, collecting ow data, sampling microinvertebrates such as aquatic bugs, y tying, and y casting. Each day also gave the girls time to explore their natural surroundings and record their thoughts, feelings, and observations in their handbooks.
Shannon Wisnowski, GS troop leader, says y- shing is “a whole new experience for everyone. It is di erent from angler shing. e poles, line, and casting methods are very di erent. Fly shing is a great fresh water way to teach the girls, and they’ve learned how to
Wisnowski says she thought the STREAM Girls program was a great opportunity for the girls. She says, “I o ered our girls the option to learn about y- shing, stream ecology, and let them watch the video about the program. Many of them were very excited about it. ey loved the idea of learning how to make ies, learning how to sh, learning about nature and how you can tell if a stream is healthy, water ow, etc.”
Having begun the program in their January monthly meeting, the girls in Troop 61011 have made observations in their eld notebooks, made ies, and practiced casting in the school gymnasium. ey visited Honeoye Creek to explore the creek bed and wade in the water to take samples, observe surroundings for water health clues, and record their ndings as scientists.
rough this program, the girls investigate water clarity, color, ow, depth, width, smell, sounds, and stream bottom consistency, as well as streamside vegetation and wildlife. ey consider nearby human activity and its impact on the water, wildlife, and vegetation around the creek. ey even measure stream velocity. Goodness knows, our Honeoye Creek ows quite rapidly much of spring.
e STREAM Girl program involves a lot of self- and groupre ection throughout the process. is summer, the girls will participate in a culminating event, shing at a local pond to get the full y- shing experience.
Wisnowski explains, “My hope is the girls learn about nature, how the water impacts the sh and organisms in it, and how it’s all connected to the surroundings. Hopefully they’ll understand the health of the water is impacted by how people treat nature. ey’ll also learn how shing can be a sport or a survival skill.”
e girls all seem to enjoy the experience. My daughter says her favorite part so far was making ies and exploring the creek. She also liked making observations in the eld notebook and casting in the gym, and she looks forward to heading out to y sh in the pond later.
Dan Hucko, a member of the Seth Green Chapter of Trout Unlimited, volunteers in Troop 61011’s sessions, and he says, “ ese girls are awesome. I’ve been impressed with their enthusiasm, concentration, and joy for learning. It’s been a lot of fun working with them!”
e natural world around us is pretty incredible, and for my daughter’s Girl Scout troop to investigate the health of a stream we see each and every day as we pass through town is invaluable.
We o en take for granted the natural world around us, so it’s crucial to think carefully about the little choices we make every day. Pick up that litter on the streambed. Help prevent detrimental runo that gets into local streams by taking harmful waste to your city or county’s hazardous waste disposal site instead of dumping it. Pick up animal waste so it doesn’t end up in the storm sewer. “Only rain down the [storm] drain.” Each of us can help make the world a better place.

Is AARP Membership Worth Having?
I remember feeling uneasy when the rst AARP envelope showed up in my mailbox. It was one thing to quietly hit the Big Five-O, and it was another thing to realize that I was then eligible for membership in a group for seniors.
It took a little while, but I did sign up. Over the years I’ve stayed. e benets are worth it. Here are a few:
I get a discount on my cellphone plan for having an AARP membership.
e list of bene ts and discounts keeps growing, many of them local. Rental cars and travel, insurance of all kinds, owers and groceries, transmissions and tires, paint ... and pizza.
ere’s the Smart Driver online safety course that, once you pass it, could save you money on your auto insurance.
e monthly newspaper, the AARP Bulletin, is worth reading for the information it contains: money, investing, senior news and events in my state, government a airs, Social Security and health. en there’s the bi-monthly AARP magazine, with a wide variety of articles, from dieting and money management to tests that predict cancer, places to retire and much more.
e two publications are worth the $16 price of membership by themselves because of the information they present.
AARP has an app now with good instructions on how to install it.
If you sign up for AARP membership (the rst year is reduced to $12), it will likely take a few months for your publications to start up. If you change your address, the same thing might happen, depending on where in the publishing cycle your change occurs. If you suspect something has gone astray, call them at 888-687-2277. Meanwhile, you can read both of them online at the AARP website: aarp.org.
What interests me the most today is the 25% o discount on a rst order from Silver Cuisine by bistroMD, especially the low sodium meals.

Poetry features
I love the feature interview with local poets in the Hometown Stories. It seems no one knows about the poets and writers around here, but we really have a lot of quality writers and writer groups in the greater Rochester area. I hope this helps people get out there and enjoy the culture we really have a lot of around here. Happy national poetry month, everyone!
The Kindness of Strangers
Checking out from grocery shopping Saturday, I was $4.00 short. I began searching in my cart for an item to return. Then the cashier said, "All Set." Feeling dumbfounded I looked up at her. She said the couple behind me paid the remainder. The husband said he'd been in my situation before, so they paid the $4.00 I owed. I thanked them, while still feeling stunned. Bless Your Kind Hearts.
Thank You Brockport Emergency Responders
On March 25th when high winds and rain were buffeting our area, a maple tree smashed through our roof. Unsure how to proceed, we called 911, and the immediate response from local agencies was exemplary. We would like to sincerely thank the Brockport Fire Dept., the Brockport Police Dept., and the Brockport Code Enforcement Office. Their quick assessment of the damage and instruction on what needed to happen saved us much further damage and allowed us to move forward.
We were then able to locate an arborist to remove the tree and a contractor to brace and tarp the opening. A sincere thanks to Lusk Tree Service and Emergency Enclosures Inc. for responding on short notice and each doing such a careful and thorough job. The Alvitos
Highway Visibility
Many times while driving you will see highway signs such as Stop signs or Hospital signs blocked by low hanging branches or bushes that have grown larger. Or you may see weeds that have grown up at intersections, making it hard to see traffic to the left and right. Highway department employees - make a concerted effort to see these impediments. Sitting high in your trucks may not give you the same visibility issues that a car would encounter.
Shoppers
If vehicles at shopping centers are required to stop at cross walks why don’t shoppers use them? How about those pushing their carts down the middle of the parking aisles. You’re putting yourself at risk by doing this. Don’t blame the driver if you’re in the wrong.
Ungrateful Wedding Couples
What is with some of the younger generation of wedding couples and newlyweds? Whether it is a family member, friend or coworker - you get invited to their wedding, you attend and/or send a generous gift, then nothing! No verbal or written thank you, no tweet or message of thanks. They are quick to cash your check but with no appreciation or acknowledgement sent! This is so rude, inconsiderate and lazy! What a bad example for the younger generation of couples that do!

What can I do to start prepping my garden for plants I started indoors if I want to be kind to the critters still bedding in the soil?
Protecting soil critters such as natural soil bacteria, fungi, and other microbes is a lofty goal for your garden. I would consider covering the garden area with some type of organic mulch (straw, leaf litter, bark mulch, etc.). This will discourage early weeds and help preserve moisture later after your plants are in. The mulch should be easily moved aside to let the area to be planted dry out a bit just prior to planting. When ready to plant your seedlings, dig a hole big enough for each plant, leaving the rest of
the soil undisturbed.
Harry Hellwig, Master Gardener Volunteer
When should I start seeds (indoors or outdoors) if the packages say before or after the last frost? How do I know when the last frost will be if the weather’s always changing?
There is an average last frost date for each plant hardiness zone with May 15 the date for zone 5 (Livingston County); Monroe County is zone 6 with an average last frost of May 1.
An average last frost date is not a guarantee against frost. As this date approaches, you need to carefully watch the long-range weather forecast. If there is no frost nor night temperatures below 45° in that forecast, you will probably be safe to plant. You also need to consider daytime temperatures: if several upcoming days will only have high
Penny Saver
temperatures in the 50’s, you should wait a few days for warmer weather. Memorial Day weekend is a traditional safe planting date. By that time, there very little risk of cold weather that will harm your plants. But check the forecast to be sure.

DID YOU KNOW?
Howhouseholdsearntheirincome haschangeddramaticallyoverthe last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
