The Nature Lover Fishing and other outdoor activities might have a reputation as predominantly male hobbies, but studies show that’s not really the case. A 2016 report from the Outdoor Foundation found that 46 percent of people who participated in outdoor activities were women. If Mom is a nature enthusiast, families can plan a Mother’s Day enjoying the great outdoors, even giving Mom a new fishing pole, hiking gear or other items that align with her favorite nature activity.

GENERAL CONTRACTING
CARPET/FLOORING
BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS
We are proud to say we received the BEST OF AWARD From
The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had. But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

Save money and stay cool as temperatures rise Excessive energy bills can be a concern in spring and summer, just as much as they are in the winter. So how can you save money while keeping your home cool? The solution is simple: Top up your attic insulation. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary over the warmer months. Most attics are insulated, but oftentimes the amount of insulation present is inadequate - especially in older homes. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay a fireand moisture-resistant batt insulation, like Roxul Comfortbatt, on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first layer. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists; cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather-stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. When a house is insulated properly, energy savings can add up over time. Remember, insulation starts working the moment it is installed and can last for the life of the building. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
Reduce energy costs and improve the safety of your home through energy efficiency measures in owned or rented property.
* “If you add a teaspoon of sugar to your biscuit mix or to the dough for rolls, it will help them to brown well, and they will come out of the oven with golden tops.” -- J.R. in Michigan

HOME IMPROVEMENT
ROOMS CAN SERVE DOUBLE DUTY In 2015, 24 percent of employed people in the United States did some or all of their work at home, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bringing work home means men and women will need a space to work. In tight quarters, bedrooms may be the only available area. An armoirestyle desk will blend in with the decor and can hide paperwork and electronics behind doors. Otherwise, a makeup vanity can serve the dual purpose of providing a place to get ready for a night out and a ready space to house a laptop during the day. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* Two ways to save money on laundry expenses: First, spring and summer are an excellent time to get into line-drying clothes -- especially towels and jeans that take longer to dry thoroughly in a dryer. Then, clean out and shorten your dryer’s vent hose to make your machine more energy efficient. It cuts down on drying time, too, saving you time AND money. * “Got an odd job coming up? Before you go out and purchase an expensive limited-use tool, check with friends and neighbors to see if you can borrow instead of buying. Check with local hardware stores to see if it’s cheaper to rent, too.” -- S.L. in Kentucky * “I have pets that leave hair and dirt on the couch. When I wash my cushion covers, one thing I always do is put them back on the pillows when they are not quite dry. They stretch better when they’re a little bit damp. I had a terrible time a few years ago when I let them dry all the way and couldn’t get them back on!” -- H.P. in Arizona * “To clean burned-on bits from your cast-iron skillet, scrub with a plastic scrubbie and salt as an abrasive. Dry immediately and rub with oil to keep moist.” -- R.T. in Ohio

Spa treatment: If Mom is still as active as ever, then a day of pampering at a nearby spa is sure to please. PAINTING/PAPERING CREATE DRAMA WITH BOLD PAINT COLORS Stick to boldness on interchangeable items. Those who like to experiment with color may find that they like to switch out the colors now and again. Instead of having to repaint every few months, use decorative items in bright shades to make swapping out color that much easier. For example, replace area rugs, throw pillows and draperies. Paint over terra cotta flower pots when the mood strikes.

Canandaigua Mom Vanessa Talks Motherhood & Supporting Fellow Moms BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
s many moms can attest, motherhood can be both a wonderful adventure and an incredible challenge. One of the most valuable assets a mother can have is a strong and caring support system. Vanessa Samuels, Canandaigua mom and manager of the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Canandaigua, shares some of her new mom realizations as well as how meaningful it is to be able to support other moms. Samuels and her husband moved to the Canandaigua/Ontario area in the fall of 2018. Samuels was expecting their first child, and the couple decided to move closer to her family. Their daughter, Jordyn, was born that winter. Much as it has been for many women, new motherhood was a revelation. “Holy cow! I just don’t feel like you can totally fathom how much work a mom actually does!” exclaimed Samuels. She says that although she has always had a wonderful relationship with her mom, she now appreciates all her mother’s hard work so much more. “[Motherhood] has given me a newfound appreciation of what moms do and go through,” Samuels explained. “How did my mom provide a meal for us every night, keep the house clean, and keep us all bathed?!” Perhaps, like many of us, you know the struggle all too well. As Samuels opines, there is so much no one ever tells you about becoming a mom. “I think you can never be prepared enough to be a mom,” she said. “There are many challenges involved in being a mother. I often found myself asking, ‘Why did no one tell me about this?’” One example Samuels gave came from her days breastfeeding. “I didn’t realize I had to consume more calories while breastfeeding, and my blood sugar dropped terribly. It was another mom who suggested to me that perhaps I should eat during the process. She put together a basket of snacks for me to place beside my nursing station.” The simple act deeply touched Samuels. “It was one of the more profound things that happened. I appreciated just recognizing the beautiful support and the desire to be a part of that in my community.” When Samuels realized she wanted to return to the workforce, this desire was still strong. Then, a friend directed her to the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Canandaigua. “I started at Care Net in October 2019,” she said. “I would say that a good number of the moms who come to see me visit because they may not have strong support elsewhere.” The opportunity to be a mom helping other moms was just what Samuels was hoping for. “It is such a beautiful thing,” she enthused. “Sometimes, moms come in because they just need a break. Many moms do not get breaks, and that can be especially true for stay-at-home moms. Helping other moms and moms-tobe is such a beautiful experience and not only for them. Providing that safe place, that sanctuary, for them is beautiful for me.” One of Samuels’ favorite ways to help other moms is by taking them to Care Net’s boutique to let Three-year-old Jordyn Samuels introduced mom, Vanessa Samuels, to motherhood!

them “shop” for clothing. “I feel we have great items in our boutique,” she said. If I wouldn’t let my kid wear an item, we don’t keep it. The clothing is quality, and the experience really is like going shopping!” Samuels also enjoys sharing Care Net’s pregnancy classes which can be attended virtually or in-person. “There are over 100 classes on all kinds of topics and answering all kinds of questions,” she explained. “I have also taken several of these classes, and it is fun to hear how other moms are applying what they have learned, as well. New content is always being added, and I believe anyone could benefit from them.” Care Net has given Samuels the opportunity to promote moms helping moms and to form a supportive, local mom community. The nonprofit offers several services, all free and confidential, which include pregnancy tests, pregnancy options and peer counseling, referrals, post-abortion counseling and education (PACE) and parenting classes, among others. COVID, however, saw Care Net meeting additional needs. “COVID was really hard for a lot of people,” observed Samuels. During the height of the pandemic, Care Net saw many moms opening up about domestic violence in their relationships. “We are not officially that service,” she said. “However, it was beautiful to see that these women trust us so much that they feel safe enough to share such a hard part of their lives. We were then able to connect them to the right agencies to get them out of those situations and to give them support.” At the same time, Care Net never stopped supporting them. “We never want to say to the moms that come to us, ‘Okay, we got you here; you’re good,’ and walk away,” said Samuels. “We are here for them starting from the first time they come in, often pregnant and unsure what to do. We work to make sure these moms truly have everything they need. When a mom or dad succeeds, their children succeed, creating generational change. That helps everyone.” When asked her feelings on motherhood thus far, Vanessa Samuels didn’t hesitate. “It is hard work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We will forever have these beautiful memories that we get to create as a family.”

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Surviving Inflation
Recent government figures outlined food price increases for one month. The numbers are grim. Fruits and vegetables went up 2.3%, the highest since 2010. Dairy went up 1.9%, the highest since 2011. Cereals and bakery items went up 1.1%. Averaged over the past 12 months, food prices have risen 8.6% (the highest increase since 1981), with poultry and fish climbing 13% and beef soaring 16%. Wow! We knew it was bad because each time we go to the grocery store, we’re spending more to get less. But to see the figures laid out in print just brings home how bad things have gotten. Bloomberg (www.bloomberg.com), whose economists we need to keep an eye on, predicts that this year we’ll pay an additional $5,200 for all household items (including gas, heating fuel and everything else) and services, which it calculates at $433 per month. We need to reconsider how we feel about food banks. We seniors generally don’t want to do that, saying, “Oh, others need it more.” Well, at this point, maybe we are those others? In a few days, I’ll be driving three of my senior neighbors to the food bank for the weekly pickup. It will be their first time, and they are nervous. But I made a scouting trip last week, parking across the street from the line of cars and walking over to talk to the person in charge. I was able to report back: No, they don’t take your name or ask questions (except maybe to ask if you’d prefer apple or orange juice). No, they’re not judgmental. No, it’s not leftover expired food, and the fruits and vegetables were fresh and lovely. The people were friendly and welcoming, happy to do what they were doing. Just go to the food bank. You won’t be judged. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Can Prilosec be Taken for More than 14 Days?

---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s the story with Prilosec? Doctors routinely tell people with GERD or acid stomach to take this forever. Yet it clearly describes only a 14-day treatment on the box. A physician assistant told me that because of a rare infrequent condition some users have that the manufacturer is legally bound to post the 14-day limit, but that the general population can safely ignore it. Can you enlighten and reassure those of us whose physicians have said to take it long term? -- C.D.C. ANSWER: The patient instructions in the over-the-counter versions of proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole (Prilosec), do recommend a 14-day course. However, longer courses may indeed be prescribed by a licensed prescriber, such as a PA. Even so, there are relatively few people who need lifelong medication. Those who do may have a condition such as Barrett’s esophagus, in which PPIs -- the most potent medical treatment to suppress stomach acid -- are necessary. They not only relieve symptoms, they are also prescribed in hopes of reducing the risk of developing cancer of the esophagus. The data on this are still not clear. For people with acid reflux (also called gastroesophageal reflux disease), PPIs are usually not needed lifelong. However, it may still be reasonable to use these drugs long term if the prescriber feels the benefit outweighs the risk. There are several risks of long-term use of PPIs. Stomach acids are important in protecting against bacteria, and two kinds of bacterial infections are more common in PPI users. The first is in the colon, especially of Clostridium difficile, where PPI users are about 30% more likely to be infected and may do so even without the antibiotic use that is the most common risk factor for C. diff. The second is pneumonia, although the apparent association may not be as strong as formerly thought. Low stomach acid may decrease absorption of vitamins and minerals, especially magnesium, iron and vitamin B12. PPIs were thought to increase the risk of a rare tumor, gastric carcinoid, based on data from rats, and of colon cancer. Those risks have not been seen in humans. Early data suggest increased risk of kidney disease and dementia. That risk appears to be small, if it even exists. Long-term PPI use has some risk of side effects and should be used only when there are benefits to PPIs that can’t be obtained with other treatments, including other medications and lifestyle changes. This especially includes better diet, weight loss when appropriate and not eating right before bed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW COMMUNITIES CAN RECOGNIZE NURSES Celebrate holidays that honor nurses as a community. The American Nurses Association notes that National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12. Though National Nurses Week is not a federal holiday, communities can still come together during the week to highlight the work their local nurses do. Township or other local officials can encourage businesses in the community to offer special discounts to nurses during the week, while schools can take part in collective efforts to thank nurses. For example, students from all grades can work on a banner thanking nurses and then showcase the banner by the entryway to campus so passing motorists can see it.

PAW’S CORNER
Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

Dog Bitten in Snout Keeps Licking Wound
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Looking at beauty in the world is the first step of purifying the mind.” -- Amit Ray
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Jesse” was bitten on the face by another dog, injuring his snout and nose so badly that it required several stitches. I can’t get Jesse to stop licking and pawing at the wound, and now he’s tearing out the stitches. The wound looks infected. What should I do? -Kamo M. DEAR KAMO: Head straight back to the veterinarian to get the wound treated for infection and closed up again. This time, have Jesse fitted for a cone-shaped E-collar. It’s jokingly called the “cone of shame,” but is an important medical device for helping to heal just such an injury. Dogs really don’t like E-collars, and they can cause stress, but if he’s able to paw at the wound, it must be worn. You can take it off Jesse at mealtimes so he can access his food, but it must go right back on. There are a few other protective collars available that are more comfortable, like padded rings, but these may not stop the pawing. Jesse’s also licking his nose, which is understandable since it probably feels weird and swollen and itchy. This can be a problem area because dogs naturally lick their nose throughout the day. The vet may give you medicine to help it heal or may recommend an overthe-counter antibiotic ointment. Put the medicine on as directed. Help reduce the chance of infection by having clean, fresh water for Jesse to drink (to clean his tongue before licking his nose) and replacing any manky old dog toys (which have a lot of germs) with clean chew toys. Don’t let Jesse sniff at or eat nasty stuff (dogs love roadkill and other animals’ poo) until the wounds heal. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS
AUTO SECTION
Antibacterial products: Antibacterial soaps, lotions and wipes may contain triclosan, triclocarban and at least 17 additional ingredients that are linked to various negative health effects. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.
STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale. Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot. Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person. Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities. AUTOMOTIVE

S E V RA Earth Day thanks! For the past 10 years, Riga Recreation has participated in the Monroe County Park's Earth Day celebration by holding an annual Pick Up the Parks event at all Monroe County Parks. This year's initiative at Churchville Park was an overwhelming success with 58 community members volunteering their time to pick up trash and tree damage due to recent high winds. We even had two bins filled with pharmaceutical waste products brought in. Many thanks to the following organizations that participated this year: Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Waste management, Churchville Lions and LEO Clubs, Newman-Riga Library, Chili Soccer Assn. and students from Churchville and Chestnut Ridge Elementary Schools. Many thanks to all! - David Thomas, Recreational Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you! Thank you to Bob Thompson for organizing and running the 5th annual Take Pride in Hemlock Litter Pick Up. Additionally, we would like to thank all the volunteers who came out to assist in this yearly project. We had all kinds of volunteers from Livonia school's National Honor society to a local business owner to several residents as well as Little Lakes volunteers all pitching in to make a difference. This year, it was noticeable that there was much less garbage. We feel that the "Take Pride in Hemlock" is spreading through this hamlet year-round. Keep up the great work! Grateful! What an amazing outpouring of folks who came to the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock for the free trees, shrubs, and plants giveaway on April 23rd! (Perhaps 100+ came early.) A big thank you to Tawn Feeney for purchasing the seedlings and handing them out in celebration of Earth Day. A number of people who didn't receive the giveaway came inside the Center for the first time and learned about what is offered here for them. Even if we ran short on trees, we hope you'll come back and take part in our many other events and classes. Thank you to all community members for their support of our activities.

Shameful It is a shame that the ship named after the Sullivan’s war heroes is in the disarray that it is. I can’t understand how a ship of one of the most powerful nations in the world could be let go to the point of sinking at the Navel Yard. This is a slap in the face to all Veterans and moreover the heroes it was named after and the ones who served on this ship. I am a Vietnam Vet, and I am appalled that this could happen. It is bad enough that Veterans have to wait 40 years to get a disability rating when pushed out of the service. Someone should be [held accountable] for the way this ship has ended up. Forgetfulness It appears to me that many people have forgotten how production all over the world seemed to come to a halt because of the COVID pandemic. These shutdowns caused shortages in many products, and thus prices for those products rose. These people also seem to have forgotten the backup in the ports that prevented shipments from getting to the marketplace, which also helped to cause shortages. I believe most of our economic problems can be traced directly to COVID. Be patient. Things will get better, hopefully sooner rather than later. Sensitivity please! To the woman who saw my father’s work van at my house and called his employer to try to report him for “goofing off.” His employer is very aware of his whereabouts and the fact that, unlike someone like you who always has access to bathroom facilities and a kitchen, he may be entitled to a break. May your husband and children always be entitled to the same considerations. In addition, my dad had just completed a messy job around the block from you. (Yes, we know you called!) He was unable to clean himself up thoroughly afterwards, as you would have been able to do in a home or office building. So, a convenient quick stop at his daughter’s house to use her facilities allowed him to, among other things, make himself more presentable before his next call and get water to go. I hope that if your loved ones have blue collar jobs one day, you will have gained more sensitivity to these issues. I would have addressed you in person, but I am much too angry, and I want others to be aware, as well.

FREE WEEK May 2–8, 2022 If you’ve ever said “I’ll be
FUN back in a jiffy,” you were FACT
actually saying, “I’ll be back in 10 milliseconds.” A jiffy is an actual measurement of time, referring to the length of one cycle of the computer’s system clock – about 10 milliseconds. When used in physics, it stands for the amount of time that it takes light to travel one centimeter.

Kellerwolf V. Ketavongsa April 14, 2022
H. Christopher Heim April 25, 2022 Avon: Harold Christopher Heim (Chris), 66, passed away peacefully after a courageous 3.5 year battle with pancreatic cancer on Monday, April 25, 2022 at the Teresa House in Geneseo. He was born on March 22, 1956 in Muncy, Pennsylvania to the late Harold and Stella Heim. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Alice; his children, Dwight (48 of Saint Augustine, Florida) and wife Kelly, and Kristen Drummey (40 of Sudbury, Massachusetts) and her husband Alex; his grandchildren, April (26), Elyse (15), Noah (14), Jack (12), Lucy (10) and Katy (7); and countless relatives and friends whose lives he touched in immeasurable ways. While he lived out his final days in Avon, Chris’s heart never left the ball fields of Fairport, nor his lakeside home in Livonia, NY. The type of fisherman who always had a story bigger than the fish at the end of the line, Chris was the embodiment of the idea that the journey is more important than the destination. Chris was a people person, through and through, and spent his working life in sales of all kinds–real estate, car sales, pizza, records–you name it, he sold it. But his professional pursuits were always primarily about finding connections with other people. His true passion was for his children and their hobbies, and most days you could find him coaching football, basketball, baseball and softball. While his commitment to coaching outlived his own children’s athletic careers, he continued helping other kids develop in their sport at HAC for many years before turning to watching his grandchildren compete at their chosen craft–be it surfing, hockey, baseball, or softball, in person and then over the computer when he could no longer travel. Keeping up with their athletic endeavors brought him genuine joy and helped foster a strong connection with each of his children and grandchildren. Always more concerned with the comfort of those around him than himself, Chris’s final days were spent entertaining his loved ones with stories of his past, hopes for their futures, and promises to look out for all from above. A Memorial Service will take place at 11AM on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 5015 Lakeville Road in Geneseo, NY. Memorial Contributions may be made to: Wilmot Cancer Center (urmc.rochester.edu), Juvenile T1D (www2.jdrf. org), and/or Teresa House of Geneseo NY (teresahouse.org). To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com
Rochester: At age 53, Kellerwolf passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at his home in Rochester, NY. He was born in Savannakhet, Laos. Kellerwolf is predeceased by his father, Bong Ketavongsa. Survived by his mother, Kolakane Ketavongsa; his companion, Ozella Johnson; his daughter, Ozella Johnson Jr.; his sisters, Chansamone (Phoukhao) Phothisane and Kingkeo Ketavongsa; his brothers, Souvanthone (Bounleau) Ketavongsa, Sinnasone (Banthong) Ketavongsa, Khamkeo (Noukham) Ketavongsa; along with several nieces, nephews and friends. Friends and family called from 3-6PM on Friday, April 22, 2022 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia, where Kellerwolf ’s funeral service was held from 9AM on Saturday, April 23, 2022. Interment will take place privately at Maplewood Cemetery in Henrietta, NY. To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com • 346-5401
UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.
Honorin You Loved On Ha Neve Bee Easie Celebrate the memory of someone who has touched your life by publishing a memoriam in our passages section.
DID YOU KNOW? According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Eating Out on Mother’s Day Hire a sitter for young kids. Although Mother’s Day is a chance for the entire family to spend time together, the main goal is to ensure Mom’s comfort and happiness. If very young children are in tow, she may not be able to relax and enjoy her meal. Infants will need to be fed, and toddlers may be easily distracted. Have a sitter watch little ones when adults are dining out, and then Mom can enjoy time with the kids when she returns home for more celebrating.
