Enroll in an adult education course. A 2014 study published in the journal JAMA Neurology examined the association between lifetime intellectual enrichment and cognitive decline in the older population. The study’s authors found that higher levels of late-life cognitive activity were associated with higher levels of cognition. The study’s authors concluded that lifetime intellectual enrichment might delay the onset of cognitive impairment. Retirees can look into adult learning programs at local colleges and universities to see if anything piques their interest.

DID YOU KNOW?
Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

The first recorded road trip across the U.S. began in 1903 with a bet. Someone bet Horatio Nelson Jackson (a physician and automobile pioneer) that he could not travel from San Francisco to New York City in less than 90 days. Accompanied by mechanic Sewall K. Crocker and a dog named Bud, they set off in a 20-horsepower Winston to prove them wrong. Despite numerous mishaps, Jackson and Crocker completed the trip in 63 days.

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF Cochlear implants The NDC notes that cochlear implants are electronic devices that are surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear. Cochlear implants utilize electrodes placed in the cochlea, or inner ear, to stimulate the auditory nerve of individuals who have substantial and permanent hearing loss. The NDC reports that cochlear implants are not necessarily ideal for everyone with significant hearing loss. That’s because no two brains are the same, and it’s difficult to predict how well a given person’s brain will interpret the new auditory signals the implant is sending. In addition, the NDC notes that certain types of hearing loss cannot be remedied with cochlear implants. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION?
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am on blood thinners, so I am unable to take ibuprofen or naproxen for pain. Do you know of anything I can take to help with pain? -- K.B. ANSWER: The body has two ways of clotting blood: the blood clotting factors and platelets, which are special blood clotting cells. Warfarin (Coumadin), like newer agents such as dabigatran (Pradaxa) or rivaroxaban (Xarelto), work as anticoagulants, blocking proteins that help clot the blood. They don’t actually “thin” the blood; that would mean a change in viscosity. Clotting factors are needed for a mature, effective blood clot. Aspirin and NSAID drugs, like ibuprofen or naproxen (Aleve and others), affect platelets, the specialized blood cells that start clotting the blood when necessary. If both the platelet system and the factor system are decreased due to medication (or underlying clotting disorder), then the risk for abnormal bleeding goes up. This does not mean people can never take aspirin or NSAIDs if they are on a medication to reduce clotting risk, but it does mean that a careful evaluation must be done, based on a person’s unique circumstances, to determine the safety of doing so. In other words, your doctor should be able to tell you how often, if ever, you can take these over-the-counter pain relievers. If you can’t take any, then acetaminophen (Tylenol) is usually the safest bet. However, too much acetaminophen can increase the effect of warfarin (measured by your INR level).
Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment. In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection.

Howdy Y’ All! My name is , a sweet & sassy Texan pup adopted in Conesus, NY from Susie Q Dog Rescue. I love my new home and folks here at Sunshine Acres. I give them lots of kisses and make them laugh when I chase my tail and frolic after my toys. I’m enjoying my outdoor play yard more each day now that the snow has gone away!
It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning to summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

What were you thinking?! I was backing out of a parking space at a local grocery store. Half way out, a lady with a cart walks right behind me. Of course, I hit my brakes. Then, she has the nerve to yell at me to watch out. Wait, I’m in motion, and you kept walking. What were you thinking? Why, if anything happened, would I would be at fault? No matter how careful I look around and how slowly I’m backing out, you still walked behind a moving vehicle.
S E V RA Thank you! Thank you to the kind person who returned my butterfly cane to the lost & found on Friday, May 13th at the Geneseo Walmart. Cookie I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all of the people who helped me look for my dog "Cookie" on Sunday, May 15th. She accidentally got loose in Batavia near Centennial Park and took off like a rocket. Thanks for the help, chicken snacks, kibble, and supportive comments. If you're looking for kind neighbors and amazing people, there's no need to look any further than Batavia! My helpers ranged from small children to mature adults and everyone in-between, walking along the streets calling out for Cookie! This story has a happy ending. Miraculously, I found Cookie a couple hours later. She was worn out, but otherwise, she was fine! Thanks again to everyone for all of your help. God Bless you! A Very Special Thank You! To my little buddy, and my big buddy, my Father, and my Grand-dad. They both served honorably, James C. Marsh, aka Cactus Jack, in the US Navy, during WWII, mostly in the Atlantic fleet. And my Father prepared to be shipped over as a medic in the US Army during the Vietnam war. So thank you for ending that. I love my Dad. A salute to my uncle Mike and my cousin, Rick. Bless you and yours to all those that serve honorably in our armed forces, law enforcement, and the medical field. Be well & many better tomorrows!
Buddy Shoppers Buddy shoppers helping: It’s a very wonderful thing you’re doing, shopping for the elderly who can’t get out. But please respect them and wear a mask. You don’t know if you are sick without symptoms. You could be sick. Even if they are vaccinated, they still could get very very sick and hospitalized due to numerous medical problems. Many of those elderly people think it’s safe for them now to unmask. But it’s really not. Just top off the wonderful thing you’re doing by respecting them and masking up. I know some of those Shoppers who have gone in without masks numerous times. It’s their space; respect it please. My friend had a buddy Shopper like this, and she said he wasn’t masking up, so she had to cancel him for her safety. Chicken Shortage? Wow, what’s next? Ready? The local grocery store had a sign: “No rotisserie chickens due to tornado in Kentucky.” Really? Chickens must be raised only in Kentucky. Don’t farmers raise chickens in New York State, too? Local stores can’t buy from local farms anymore? These excuses never end! Gas Prices There is way too much stupidity in Government. Add ethanol to the pumps to “help” the fuel crisis? Ethanol ruins conventional engines that are not designed for that fuel additive. Ethanol reduces mileage and creates more pollution. It’s funny: the plan to reduce tax on gas begins in June, but since the announcement, look how high prices have risen. Sure, the way it’s going, anything will help. It’s sort of like giving you a quarter back on a hundred dollar purchase.

Lest We Forget BY DP DUNN
M
emorial Day is often heralded as the unofficial start of summer; yet its origin, traditions and intentions are far more profound and meaningful.
Memorial Day has its roots in Remembrance Day celebrations which began after the War Between the States. Families reflected on the loss of their fathers, sons, cousins, and neighbors. It was a solemn day set aside to pause and reflect on war, service to the nation, and the losses incurred during a long and difficult war. Remembrance Day was later called Decoration Day, and its popularity and practice grew after World Wars 1 and 2 resulting in every state practicing some formal date of remembrance for the nation’s fallen warriors. In 1968, the US Congress instituted the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moving the celebration of Memorial Day to the last Monday in May. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs cites the purpose of Memorial Day thus: “Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service. In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.” While is it always appropriate to thank an active duty member of the armed forces, and living Veterans, for their service, Memorial Day belongs specifically to those members of the US military who have died while serving their nation. We thank them through our recollection of their sacrifice to keep us safe and free. Meet PFC Ray Bowman, born in Rochester on April 2nd, 1924. He was the fifth of seven Bowman children. They were a lively bunch. Ray served in D Company of the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Ray was a machine gunner. On Tuesday, April 10th, 1945, Ray wrote this letter home: Dear Mom, How is my favorite Mom? I know you are wondering why you don’t get more mail from me but you can see from the papers we are moving fast and there is hardly even time to wash anymore. This is sure a strange war and right now it is for the better for we are motoring [motorized?] Yesterday we freed quite a few Americans, English, and Russians in a rotten prison camp. The Americans and in Jan [?] had walk [sic] 500 miles from near Poland and they had less than nothing to eat. They were so thin and sick the Germans could not take them back with them. I often wondered about Ray S. and some of the other fellows I know. I sure hope we find them soon. The Russians were slave workers and were mostly women. Oh boy what a celebration we had last night. We are far away from there now tho. On the average I’ve had 2 hours of sleep per night for two weeks now.
We had a radio for tonight and it is swell to hear music again. Gosh sometimes I get so homesick for all those things that I left behind. You should have seen the me after 4 days of no washing. I still have not taken all the dirt off. It’s now one o’clock in the morning, Mom and chow is at 5:30 so guess I’ll hit the hay. Please send me a fruit cake when you can. Love, Ray Eight days later, PFC Raymond J. Bowman died in Leipzig, Germany. Ray was 21 years and 17 days old. This is why we celebrate Memorial Day. Because we cannot thank Ray in person for his sacrifice. He served, and we benefitted as we still do today. Meet 1st Lt. Hiram Appelget of the 95th Bomber Squadron. Lt. Appelget was killed in action on March 1st, 1943. Steven Appelget said of his great uncle, “[Hiram, or ‘Hi’] was a pilot of a B-26 Marauder – the ‘Barrelhouse Bessie’,” Steven said. “When I started seriously working on family history, I made up a slogan for our family: ‘We showed up’. [Hi] showed up. He wasn’t looking for a big military career or even to ‘whup’ the [enemy]. He had a job to do, and he did it – and complained about the food and the conditions along the way. He had a ship to fly and guys to watch out for. And that’s what he did. He showed up.” Hi and Ray both showed up. They both did their jobs. Neither wanted to be a hero. Neither, I imagine, woke up that particular morning expecting to die. Although, when serving in combat, that is a constant possibility. These men made choices to serve their nation. Many served in non-combat positions, and all accepted the risk willingly for home, family, and nation. It is estimated that approximately 1,304,702 men and women have lost their lives serving in the United States military, in armed conflicts, since 1775. That’s one million three hundred four thousand seven hundred two reasons to say a profound and sincere “Thank You!” this Memorial Day. They all ‘showed up’, did their jobs, and gave their lives, and we are in their debt. Remember Hi, Ray and the many others this Memorial Day. Set an alarm for 3pm. Say a prayer for the repose of their eternal souls if you are so inclined, but at least have awareness and gratitude towards all of these departed men and women who will not be marching in any parades, tipping a beer with you, shopping, fishing, camping, playing ball, boating, gardening, or grilling. That’s exactly why we celebrate Memorial Day.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Walk Faster, Live Longer
We’ve known for years that walking is a good form of exercise for seniors ... we just didn’t know why. Now a new study not only explains how it works, but why brisk walking is even more effective. Ten years ago, researchers at Leicester University Biomedical Research Centre started looking at genetic data in the biobanks in the U.K. for clues about why seniors who walk seemed to live longer. They didn’t fool around with a dozen or so participants. No, they analyzed the information of over 405,000 people. And now we know: It’s the telomere length. Telomeres (aka leucocyte telomere length, or LTLs) are the “end caps” on strands of DNA, the building blocks of our bodies and an indicator of our biological age. Fast walkers have longer LTLs, and therefore better health ... and longer lives. That same study showed that as little as 10 minutes per day of brisk walking can equate to longer lives. (The Mayo Clinic prefers 30 minutes of activity per day, possibly broken into three 10-minute sessions.) The best walking pace appears to be 3 mph, although the research data was from wearable tracking devices like those we use to measure steps per day. But there’s more. A study at the National Institutes of Health concluded that the length of the telomeres is positively associated with consuming fruits, dairy, 100% fruit juice and coffee. On the other hand, food and drinks with high amounts of sugar and red meat can negatively affect the telomere length. The study gave a big thumbs up to the Mediterranean diet, with loads of nuts, fruits, vegetables, unrefined cereals, fish and olive oil. If you invest in a pedometer to measure your steps, be sure to look for one that tracks your speed. Ask your doctor about any recommendations they have for the trackers. FAIRPORT Poet-Tree! To commemorate Arbor Day, the Village of Fairport Tree Board announces the return of Poet-Tree! Poet-Tree is an installation of original poems authored by Junior and Senior Fairport High School Students that celebrates our connection to trees. Through the end of the month, select trees in our urban forest will provide the backdrop to uplifting and inspiring poetry. The installation of 44 poems is located right in the heart of the Village of Fairport and is accessible along sidewalks. Look for trees tied with various ribbons and can be found along both the canal path east and west, and on both sides of North Main Street. Welcome to Fairport! Underground Railroad: A Secret Crusade to Set People Free - On May 29th, at 2:30 pm, The Perinton Historical Society will present “Underground Railroad: A Secret Crusade to Set People Free.” This expansive collection of photographs and drawings, presented by Wendy Murray, will feature gutrendering original stories about Black fugitives, as they traveled on the Underground Railroad, seeking personal safety and freedom from the evils of slavery. Escorted along many forgotten trails, this narrative explores the sacrifice and bravery that white and black ‘Abolitionists’ endured as they extended a hand to create new lives. This event takes place at the Fairport Historical Museum, 18 Perrin St. No registration is required.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * For years your dentist has no doubt advised you to be sure to floss. But the benefits extend beyond your teeth. Researchers have discovered that flossing can also help your memory. It prevents gum disease, which prevents stiff blood vessels, which in turn cause memory issues.

BEAT THE TRAVEL CROWDS THIS MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND Expect the trip to take longer than planned. Delays are possible, if unlikely, even if you travel during off-peak hours. Recognition of that can make traffic jams or flight delays a little easier to manage. Parents can prepare kids for delays by letting them know in advance that some setbacks are possible. Build expected delays into your itinerary so you aren’t stressing out about missing anything. If travelers luck out and experience no delays, then the weekend begins that much sooner.

CONCRETE PATIOS/SIDEWALKS
BOLD COLORS ADD VITALITY TO HOMES Analogous colors are three colors that sit side-by-side on the color wheel and share a common denominator in terms of shade. Lavender, blue and an orchid pink are examples of such hues. This cool, regal combination can add femininity to a bedroom or even drama to another space in the house. If painting the walls dark blue or lavender seems scary, opt for a neutral shade on walls and then dress up the space with inky and violet accents.

GENERAL CONTRACTING BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Young Puppy Just Can’t ‘Hold It’ DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We adopted a puppy last month. “Jake” is having some problems adjusting to his new home. He has soiled his own bed three times so far (we crate him at night) and doesn’t make it through the day -- he starts whining by the door around lunchtime and, if we’re not home, will just go anywhere in the house. How can we fix this? -- Carl B., via email

DO NOT WAIT! NOW IS THE TIME to schedule air conditioning services/maintenance or installations. We install, service, and maintain: air conditioners, furnaces, heat-pumps, boilers (steam/hot water), Water heaters (indirect, tankless, power-vented, standard, electric). We have been doing this since 1988!
DEAR CARL: How old is Jake? It sounds like, barring any unknown physical issues or illness, he is a young puppy with a small bladder. He simply can’t hold it as long as a fully grown dog. The fact that Jake makes it a point to whine by the door means that the house training is effective, but you may be waiting much too long to take him out. When he has to go, he will go. That includes soiling his crate, which is an absolute last resort for a dog. Follow this guideline, published by the American Kennel Club, called the “month-plus-one” rule: Take your puppy’s age in months, and add one. That gives you a rough estimate of the maximum number of hours Jake should wait before going outside to pee or poop. For example, if Jake is four months old, add one to that number. The total, five, means he should be taken outside every five hours. Every puppy is different, so Jake may need to go out a little sooner. And yes, that means he may need to go out in the middle of the night, or on a pee pad. He should always be taken out just before bedtime and first thing in the morning, regardless of his age. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS Make sure you choose the right ladder. DIYers may spend ample time shopping for drills and other electronic tools and gadgets that are fun to use. But ample time also must be afforded to the type of ladder you intend to use on a project. Estimates from the West Bend Insurance Company indicate that roughly 90,000 people visit the emergency room due to ladder accidents each year. Never use a broken ladder or an aging ladder that’s uneven. In addition, do not use a ladder that forces you to reach far away. If you’re leaning while using a ladder, the ladder is either too short for your project or positioned too far away from the wall. The National Home Security Alliance advises DIYers to place their ladder one foot from the wall for every four feet it rises above the ground. Test your ladders for their sturdiness prior to beginning work so you aren’t tempted to use a subpar ladder.

Q &A with the
Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.
Master
Gardeners What is the best way to clean dust off my house plants? There are two main reasons to clean your house plants: aesthetics and health. A layer of dust will limit a plants ability to absorb light, which interferes with photosynthesis and slows growth down. One of the easiest ways to give a houseplant a refresher is to take it into the shower with you. Small plants do well with a quick dip in the sink, but consider bringing in the larger potted plants for a more immersive cleaning. This practice works best if you have a removable showerhead and can adjust the pressure. It is best to keep the temperature lukewarm. You could also use a spray bottle. Another method that works well on large sturdy leaves is to utilizing soapy water and a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. Mix 1/4 tea-
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County spoon of dish soap with a half-gallon of room temperature water and gentle clean the plant with the sponge or microfiber cloth. When done rise the plant with clean water. When is the best time of the year to prune lilac bushes and grape vines? Grapevine pruning is performed all winter in many large commercial vineyards because this big job requires many hours. The “late dormant period” – FebruaryMarch--is the ideal time to prune, however, because the extent of winter injury to vines can then be determined. If injury has occurred, pruning severity can be adjusted. Pruning can affect the timing of bud-break. That difference may be cause for or prevention of frost dam-
age to buds in the growing season Do not over-prune lilacs. Let the plant develop several branches from the base, instead of only one or two. This allows you to remove stems that have grown too tall, or have been attacked by diseases or insects, and still have flowering wood. Pruning is unnecessary for the first 3 or 4 years. Thereafter, limit pruning to the removal of weaker wood from the center of the bush. This prevents a thicket from developing. You should do this soon
after flowers have fallen. Do not prune in late summer, fall, or winter; late pruning often results in removal of flower buds. Old bushes with runaway growth will need severe pruning. Large single trunks may be cut back to a stump to encourage growth of new stems from the roots. Clumps of overgrown stems may be thinned out about a third a year starting with oldest, weakest, and damaged.

DID YOU KNOW? Data from the GLSEN® 2019 National School Climate Survey indicates that 59 percent of LGBTQ students felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation. Roughly one-third of LGBTQ students indicated they had missed at least one entire day of school in the month preceding their participation in the survey because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable, while just under 9 percent admitted missing four or more days during that span. The survey consisted of more than 16,000 students between the ages of 13 and 21 and represented students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and Guam. Results from the 2021 survey will be available in fall 2022. Spirit Day is an effort to highlight and support programming that counters the dangerous effects of bullying of LGBTQ youth. More information about Spirit Day, including how to participate and support LGBTQ youth, can be found at www.glaad.org/spiritday. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Call: (585) 924-2060 HOW TO CREATE STRUCTURE AFTER RETIREMENT Find something to truly engage in. Professionals who truly enjoy their work tend to be fully engaged, so it’s no surprise if such individuals have a hard time adjusting to retirement. Some may suggest volunteering can help fill the void created by retirement, but researchers with the Sloan Center on Aging and Work at Boston College have found that only those individuals who are truly engaged in their post-retirement volunteering enjoy the psychological benefits of such pursuits. So before retirees dive right in to volunteering as a means to creating structure, they should first exercise due diligence and find an opportunity they’ll find genuinely engaging.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Here’s a grill tip just in time for Memorial Day: When you need to cook something that needs covering (say, chicken) alongside something that does not (like hot dogs), simply invert an aluminum roaster/cake pan over the needs-covering item. You can purchase smaller size pans that can be reused. -- JoAnn * “I have a tip about taking medicine. Regardless of the size of the pill, I always feel as if it is stuck in my throat. I have started to have a chunk of banana after taking a pill. I don’t get that stuck feeling anymore.” -- T.B. in New Hampshire

* “Painting stairs? This tip will save your life! Paint every other step to start with. When they are dry, go back and paint the others. This way, you can use the staircase anytime during your project. This is particularly important if the stairs are the only way to get to bed after a long day of painting!” -- I.L. in Nevada * Mix a quarter cup of salt in with two tablespoons of bath wash for a sudsy, refreshing, skin-soothing salt scrub.

Always use appropriate language. When using a mobile phone in public, refrain from peppering conversations with expletives or graphic language. Children may be nearby without your knowledge, but even if there are no young people in the immediate vicinity, your fellow adults likely don’t want to hear foul or graphic language.

* To travel with pleated skirts, use this packing trick: Turn the skirt inside out, and straighten all the pleats. Then tape the bottom so that all the pleats are held together. Next, feed the skirt into a leg of pantyhose with the foot cut off. You’ll end up with a nice tube, which you can tuck into the side of your luggage.
