The tradition of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back more than a century to 1908, when West Virginia native Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother, who had passed away three years earlier, and all mothers in Grafton, West Virginia. Mother’s Day would ultimately become a national holiday in the United States in 1914, thanks in large part to Jarvis’ campaigning. As Jarvis, who never married and never had children of her own, grew old, she criticized Mother’s Day as overly commercial, even trying to have it removed from the calendar. Those efforts failed, and Mother’s Day remains popular now, more than 100 years after the idea for it was conceived.

What plants are most effective to grow in containers?
Most vegetables grown in a backyard can be grown in containers, although a container’s diameter and depth need to be considered when selecting what vegetables to grow. Plant density (number of vegetable plants per container) depends on individual plant space requirements and root depth. Containers-grown plants require more frequent fertilization typically than in ground plants because of the limited space within the container for drawing nutrients. Fertilizer can be mixed with the potting mix pre-planting, or you
can purchase potting mix with a starter fertilizer mixed in. Plants grown in containers need frequent watering as containers dry out fast. Watering daily is necessary to provide adequate moisture for plant growth. Apply enough water to reach the bottom of the container. Allow excess water to drain out. Avoid wetting the leaves when watering as this will encourage development of foliar diseases. Try not to let your container dry out completely between watering as this will lead to flower and fruit drop of. The size of the container needs will depend a lot on the vegetable or herbs you
plant. Most herbs can be grown in ½-1 gal containers. Cabbage, Cucumbers, green beans, leaf lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, and cherry tomatoes can be planted in a 1-gallon containers. Beets, Carrots, Eggplant, Peppers, and radishes need 2-gallon containers. Your regular tomatoes will need 3-gallon containers. My personal preference is a
20 gallon grow bag where you can grow multiple vegetables together if they are companion plants (they can and like to grow together). Note: some don’t like to be grown together.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Thousands of injuries occur to children and pets who get hurt around mowers. It’s best if children and pets remain indoors when homeowners are mowing or using other power equipment that may kick up debris. Children under the age of 12 may not have the strength or ability to operate lawn tools. Also, never make a game of riding a child on a riding mower. Nobody under the age of 16 should operate riding lawn mowers.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS
Be especially careful with power tools. Power tools can do a lot and they’re fun to use. But it’s important that DIYers do not let fun distract them from safety. The Power Tool Institute urges power tool users to wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. The PTI also advises users to make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and to inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. Much like it’s unsafe to overreach on a ladder, overreaching when using power tools increase the risk for mistakes, accidents and injuries.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME
Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem.
Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary.
Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals.

POISON PREVENTION TIPS
Use original containers. It’s tempting to transfer certain cleaning products or chemicals to other bottles or jars for ease of use, but this can be dangerous. People in the home may mistakenly ingest something if it is transferred to a beverage container or something typically used for food storage. Plus, should ingestion occur, you will no longer have the safety label in place. That means you won’t have immediate access to safety protocols that can save lives.

Northhampton County Park Heroes
Hats off and a big thank you to the park staff and volunteers that maintain the miles of trails in Northhampton Park. With the many windstorms, and numerous dead ash trees, it has been quite a chore clearing trails so that the park hikers are able to enjoy their time in the park safely. You are appreciated!
Anonymous Donor
My friend and I were having lunch on 4/26. Our waitress told us an anonymous donor paid part of our bill. A special thank you for your kindness. It made our day!
Thank you volunteer organizations
I’d just like to give a quick shout-out to all the volunteer non-profit organizations out there doing great things for their communities. Whether it be picking up trash along trails, keeping fire hydrants clear of debris, helping to keep food pantry shelves stocked/organized, collecting items for animal shelters and beyond... THANK YOU!
HOMETOWN PHOTOS
Some Home Owners
Home owners that have abandoned swimming pools in their back yard are probably breeding mosquitos. Some form of wildlife could fall into it and not be able to get out. Of course some folks just have no pride in what their property looks like. Just sayin....
Missing Front License Plates
Why do so many vehicles with NY license plates on the back now not have front license plates? (This is especially true of Teslas, which Elon Musk doesn’t bother to build with a front license plate holder, but also plenty of other vehicles.) Did NY eliminate the requirement of a front plate without telling the rest of us? Or is this just another example of people thinking the rules only apply to others? The Thruway might be able to avoid a toll increase if they were allowed to charge fines to all of the vehicles passing through their toll cameras that have NY rear plates but no front plate!
Disrespectful
I sure hope that the mowers at a local cemetery are held accountable for destroying flowers that were left at graves. Destroyed flowers were spread by the mower and left. How could anyone do that!

Exercise Builds Strength and Improves Limits in Those With Arthritis
DEAR DR. ROACH: I so appreciated your recent column on arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis. I’m a big exerciser; however, I have always heard that this arthritis is caused or exacerbated by wear and tear. I was surprised to hear otherwise!
I have modified or given up a handful of exercises that seem to cause my joints more pain, specifically fullbody weight-bearing on my wrists. Are these exercises I can incorporate back into my routine? I have found that certain activities, i.e. card shuffling, buttoning, etc., hurt my thumbs, so I have made adaptations. Should I work through the pain, assuming that I am not causing any more damage to my joints? -- L.D.
ANSWER: Most exercise is not damaging to joints, but high-impact or high-frequency activities can certainly worsen arthritis pain.
For arthritis of the knees and hips, I recommend walking as the best exercise, starting slow and building up based on what a person can tolerate. It’s the movement, not the resistance, that’s most important, so swimming (or just walking in a pool) is a great option for people who feel too much pain from walking.
For the smaller joints of the hands and wrists, I would recommend activities that don’t hurt you as much. Stretching the joints and movements like squeezing are a good place to start. You might consider a “stress ball” or a hand therapy ball to provide some resistance and build up hand strength.
Adapting your activities to your limitations is a good idea, but you also want to work on improving those limitations. A physical or occupational therapist is your best partner in designing a program.
Don’t forget that over-the-counter topical antiinflammatory medicines, like diclofenac, are pretty effective with small joints and are very safe.
***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Promote Healthy Kidneys
Healthy kidneys are something many people take for granted. But those who want to do everything they can to keep their kidneys healthy can consider the following tips.
• Stay hydrated, but avoid overhydration. Adequate hydration definitely promotes healthy kidneys. But overhydrating has not been proven to enhance kidney function. Adults should drink between four and six glasses of water per day.
• Exercise. Regular exercise benefits various parts of the human body, including the kidneys. High blood pressure and diabetes are two of the biggest risk factors for kidney disease, and regular exercise can reduce a person’s risk of both conditions. However, overexertion can strain the kidneys, so avoid going too hard.
• Speak with a physician before taking vitamin supplements or herbal remedies. Excessive supplementation can harm the kidneys. Discuss any supplements or herbals remedies with a physician before taking them.
• Quit smoking. Smoking decreases the blood flow in the kidneys, decreasing their ability to function at optimal capacity. Smoking also increases a person’s risk of high blood pressure and cancer of the kidneys.
• Eat healthy. A healthy diet decreases a person’s risk for high blood pressure and diabetes. Adhering to a healthy diet and controlling portion sizes can help control weight and blood pressure and contribute to healthy kidneys as well.
• Get screened. Adults who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure or diabetes should make sure their physicians screen for kidney dysfunction during routine appointments.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME WHEN YOU’RE AWAY
Switch from a traditional lock and key to a lockbox. Individuals who travel frequently can take a page from the realtor notebook and switch from a traditional lock and key lock system to a lockbox. Lockboxes require that a code is entered before a box containing a key can be unlocked. Homeowners who want this added measure of protection don’t even need to put a key inside the lockbox, which typically covers a lock, making it extremely difficult for potential thieves to pick the lock.

Preventing Ear Infections in Dogs
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My German Shepherd puppy, Max, seems to get an ear infection every other week. He’s miserable, shaking his head from side to side. And he hates having ear drops put in -- a job that gets more di cult the larger he gets! How can I stop the constant ear infections? -- Betsy J., Syracuse, New York
DEAR BETSY: Dogs can be very prone to ear infections. e shape of their ear canal is the most likely reason. Allergies and ear mites vie for the title of top irritant in a pet’s ear canal.
e symptoms are probably very familiar to you. Dark discharge from the ears, accompanied by an unusual, dank odor, frequent head shaking, scratching at the ears, and perhaps some scabbing of the outer ear. A veterinarian can pinpoint redness and swelling inside the ear canal as well.
Treatment should always start at the veterinarian’s o ce. ere, cleaning and disinfection of the ear will be done, and then your dog will likely be prescribed medication -- typically eardrops -- to be administered for up to 10 days. A er treatment is complete, you’ll want to prevent future infections by gently cleaning Max’s ears with an ear cleaning solution for dogs and cotton balls (not Q-tips).
Getting a big dog to hold still for treatment can be a struggle. Here’s one method: If he’s very reactive, try to stand over Max with one leg on each side and his head facing forward, away from you. Hold him under his muzzle and apply the medication or cleaning solution to one ear and massage the base of the ear for 30 seconds. Let go of his muzzle and allow him to shake his head. Repeat on the other side. Finish by gently swiping the ear canal with cotton balls.
Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

NATIONAL TEACHER DAY SPOTLIGHT ON VICTORIA E. GERHARDT
BY MARY MAGER
On May 4, National Teacher Day, we celebrate the work and dedication of our educators and all they do for our children. With the deluge of crises facing our school systems, educators have had to rise to many critical challenges as they lend support, care, and innovation to students. Alongside those teachers are the other professionals rounding out the academic teams in those schools.
Meet Victoria E. Gerhardt, West Irondequoit School social worker. She aims to bring attention and awareness through social emotional learning (SEL) to empower every student. Dividing her time among three di erent schools (Brookview, Briarwood, and Seneca),shereliesonherabilitytoworkwithallpeople, hersenseof humor, and calm presence. Allowing children to be heard in a safe environment with boundaries develops a respectful relationship between them and herself. Trained in threat assessment, she constantly assesses situations for potential danger.
She relies on her diversi ed mental health background to relate to both students and their families. Because social work is a vast eld, it allows Victoria opportunities to work in various areas. e heart transplant unit at Strong Hospital was her starting point, where she worked with patients (and their families) undergoing ventricular-assisted devices and heart transplants. ere, she led a support group and was with families throughout the heart transplant journey. A erwards, she transitioned to pediatric palliative care, working with children with life-threatening illnesses. Victoria devoted her time to both the child and their family from diagnosis to cure or from diagnosis to grief and loss. eseexperiencesheightenedherself-awarenessandherability to nurture strong collegial relationships and excellent professional boundaries. She prides herself on being a team player and a problem solver. Frequently, Victoria problem solves and consults with teachers. Entering the classroom restores the professional dialogue between her and sta , and she likes to partner with teachers to strengthen parent communication. To bridge the connection between home and school, she relates with parents. For example, in CSE meetings, she has learned to gauge parents’ reactions, prompting her to clarify, so they don’t get lost in academic lingo.
Victoria’s people skills make her an e ective school social worker. She emphasizes building rapport and meeting students where they are. Making children feel seen, valued, wanted, and heard are some of her strongest skills. SEL is one of Victoria’s specialties. It is a foundation of learning, allowing students to perform their best academically once they’ve learned coping techniques to regulate emotions and stressors. Social emotional learning meets students where they are. Mindfulness is an essential part of SEL, as Victoria says, “We are processing our jobs, responsibilities, families, obligations, goals and constant demands,” and we need to recharge. Victoria helps “[empower] educators to empower students.”
John Steinbeck once said, “Teaching might be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.” It’s no doubt that Victoria Gerhardt touches the lives of her students
via this medium. “When a parent tells me I’ve made a di erence in their child’s life, that is one of my most rewarding career moments.”Victoria’slessons derive from the 3 Rs. She teaches self-awareness and emotional regulation so students can be successful and independent learners for the rest of their lives. Triggerswillalwaysthreaten students’ interpersonal relationships. Learning to take responsibility and deal with those feelings will help them make good decisions.
Victoria shares her thoughts and practices on a blog, themindfulapple.com, which has become a valuable resource for other school social workers, parents, as well as classroom teachers. Shesays,“Studentswillmeettheirtomorrowswithhope, con dence and health!” is optimism opens the door for everyone. Creative resources include units on emotions, positive thinking, and humor and laughter. All encourage a healthy mindset and coping skills.
Victoria’s advice is “Start small and stay consistent.” For instance, daily journaling allowing children to free write encourages “feeling exploration and self-awareness.” Victoria uncovers the emotional domino e ect that o en causes students to spiral out of control. She helps guide children through easy, productive steps so they learn to identify emotions and triggers, employing successful coping strategies on their roadmap to success for optimal mental health.
Her strong character, morals, and honesty are very driven, and she remains true to herself. Her faith grounds her, and being passionate about what is best for the student is a priority. Victoria’s love for children keeps her motivated. is comes naturally to her, andshebelievesinwhatshedoesandthatshe’smakingadi erence.
While in the work environment, Victoria’s sense of humor, strongsupportgroupofcolleagues, andherprofessionalboundaries help her handle stress. Outside school, she cherishes time with family. SENIOR NEWS By

e Heavy Li ing of Pet Ownership
For seniors, there are several questions that arise when we consider whether we should adopt another pet a er the death of a long-loved companion. ere’s the scary thought of potential veterinary bills or whether we should own a dog that needs to be walked every day. Or maybe we think of adopting a young cat who will likely outlive us or an elderly cat who probably won’t.
I rmly believe, however, that when it comes to deciding about adopting a pet that the biggest potential problem comes down to heavy li ing.
e rule of four, I call it: ere are four likely scenarios wherein, without intervention or assistance, heavy li ing is required.
For the economical 40-pound bag of dog chow, I would need to li it into the shopping cart, put it on the conveyor belt at checkout, get it into the car and once home, get it into the house. at’s four li ings.
is applies to even the 20-pound jug of cat litter. I do the math: 4 times 20 equals 80 pounds I’d be li ing without interventions.
Interventions can take the shape of a strong teenage boy angel who happens to walk by in the pet supplies aisle; a store clerk who gets down cat litter from a very high shelf; checkouts with a radar gun on a stretchy cord that will reach to the cart to scan the bar code; and big neighbors who happen to be strolling by just as I’m pulling in my driveway.
Without luck, however, there have been too many times when all four li ings have been required. I su er the next day.
I have decided to cut my pet-related li ing down to none. I have signed up for home delivery at two stores, never mind the expense. It’s worth every penny to see other people walk up my driveway carrying the heavy items, fully appreciative of the fact that I don’t have to do any li ing whatsoever.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* My dogs stay outside most of the day now, while the weather is so nice. We bring them indoors when it gets too hot, but for a treat, we will freeze a plastic cup of ice and then chuck the giant “ice block” on the porch. They lick at it and play with it. It’s like a little doggie waterpark when they are done. -- M.E. in Ohio
* Finding a summer camp for your kids can be a chore. Check with your child’s school and school friends for recommendations. Also, see if your city’s recreation department is holding any camps. Some county extension offices (agriculture department) offer camps. Many of these are reasonably priced. Check into them now.
* I have a tip for you. When pouring water in your coffee pot, use a 4-inch funnel by placing it in the tank. Helps not spill water. Pour slowly! -- P.T. in Illinois
* To keep the kitchen garbage can from smelling, put meat, vegetables, fruit and peelings in a bread bag, and put it in the freezer until you take it outside for the garbage collector. -- E.L. in Virginia
* Keep fast-food coupons in your car’s glove compartment. They will be there if you need to go to a drive-through, and will be handy for picking up dinner on the way home. If you need them at home, chances are your car is there anyway! -- F.D. in Alabama
* Got paper recycling? More and more schools are using paper recycling as a means to fundraise. Don’t have a kid in school? Drive by and look for a dumpster or bin that’s labeled. Odds are good you might find one. If you don’t, ask!

Determine how much time you spend on common tasks. Take a day to calculate how much time you’re devoting to certain parts of your workday. For example, is email correspondence bogging you down for several hours? BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT
The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant.IntheUnitedStates, ithas been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

DID YOU KNOW? Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.
