DID YOU KNOW?

According to KidsHealth.org, more than one-third of child injuries and deaths happen at home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases.

I got Missy when she was 7 weeks old and she will be 3 in Sept. She boxes like a kangaroo, jumps up on your leg and plays fetch, and gets in trouble playing with my plant and walking in my food cupboards. I sometimes open all my doors so she can jump down. Missy is an indoor cat. I love her a lot.

I like to use my compost for gardening but I have no idea how much to mix with my soil. NoideaonapHlevel!Help!!

Compost is an excellent garden soil amendment to use every gardening season and should be added starting early before planting. It also can be added as a mulch as your plants begin to grow and produce. Compost improves the tilth (workability) of the soil and acts like a slow-release fertilizer for your plants. Most good garden soil has around

4% compost. I like to use about 10% in my gardening, which works out to adding about 1 inch of compost worked into the top 9 inches of soil. Mature, finished compost acts like a buffer to soil pH.Unfinished compost produces amino (organic) acids as the low-temperature bacteria break down the compost. Mature compost becomes more neutral (between 6-8 pH) as mesophile bacteria take over. Most garden plants require a soil pH of between 6 and 7. You can get soil

test kits, testing meters, and paper test strips and test your soil yourself, or you can contact your local county Cooperative Extension office for more information.

Any recommendations on getting rid of spinach worms?

The “spinach worms” you have are likely a variety of caterpillar. They can be treated effectively with an organic substance called Bacillus Thuringiensis, often called BT. This is a common product in garden centers. Follow all instructions on the label closely.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

DID YOU KNOW?

Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

LOW-COST WAYS TO REVAMP LIVING AREAS

Establish the budget. Homeowners should figure out how many dollars they can designate to a living room makeover before purchasing supplies or hiring out the work. Figure out the scope of the remodel, visit stores or suppliers to price out materials, get estimates from contractors, and then plan for some unforeseen circumstances along the way to determine if this type of renovation is affordable. If not, scale things back until the project more closely aligns with your budget.

STRATEGIES TO DISCONNECT MORE OFTEN

Close some social media accounts. Social media can be a useful tool to stay connected with family, friends and the local community. But those connections can be maintained through one or two social media platforms. That’s a lesson millennials or Gen Z-ers can take to heart, as the Global Web Index indicates that the average person has 8.4 social media accounts. Closing some social media accounts can reduce the temptation to pick up a device, ultimately paving the way to more time away from tablets, smartphones and laptops.

EXPLORE THE HISTORY AND FACTS OF CROSSWORD PUZZLES

Even though a type of word puzzle was found inscribed on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb, the first known crossword puzzles are credited to journalist Arthur Wynne, who designed his “word-cross” in 1913. Wynne’s puzzle appeared in a Sunday newspaper called New York World.

Since its inception, the crossword puzzle has become one of the world’s most recognizable puzzles, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world, and now appearing in virtually all newspapers.

Crossword puzzles are word games in which the answers correspond to numbered clues. The words are put into a grid of horizontal and vertical squares to form completed, intersecting words. When all of the words are supplied correctly, the puzzle is complete. In North America and Great Britain, crossword grids traditionally have 180-degree rotational symmetry. The diagram, or placement of black squares within the grid, must be symmetric diagonally. This means that the pattern of the puzzle will appear the same if the puzzle is turned upside down.

American crossword puzzles conform to a set of established rules made popular by publisher Simon & Schuster, the original crossword puzzle publisher. The standard puzzle grid size is 15x15. However, 17x17, 19x19 and 21x21 also are used. Smaller 13x13 also are accepted. Many crossword puzzles do not use two-letter words, and three-letter words are kept to a minimum. In addition, every letter square must be part of both an Across and a Down word. Crossword rules are different in other parts of the world. For example, in Japan, the corner squares of a crossword puzzle must be white.

Despite once publishing a statement describing crosswords as a “sinful waste in the utterly futile finding of words the letters of which will fit into a prearranged pattern” in 1924, The New York Times routinely produces what many consider to be the world’s most challenging crossword puzzles. Stanley Newman is credited with completing a New York Times crossword faster than anyone in history. In 1996, Newman completed a crossword in two minutes, 14 seconds.

Crossword puzzles appear in newspapers, magazines and kids’ activity books and are even used in school lessons to supplement vocabulary lessons. Doing these puzzles also may be good for one’s health. According to a University of California at Berkeley study, crossword puzzles may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that the more often someone engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as crosswords, the less buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are hallmarks of the disease. Doing crossword puzzles also may offer a distraction that helps people reduce stress.

Crossword puzzles have a storied history. They are completed recreationally and in competitions, and cruciverbalists look forward to new puzzles in their newspapers every week.

RAVES

Thank you to the Hemlock Food Pantry

You are all the example of God’s Love & Kindness. Thank you for all you do & your generosity. Grateful Patron

Many thanks!

Many thanks to the cute little lady that paid my bill at the Dollar Store Friday evening the 12th of May. It has been passed on already.

Welcomed by Batavia

I moved to Batavia just about a year and a half ago, but it did not take me long to fall in love with this place. As I lived most of my life in the Northtowns, this area has been such a breath of fresh air.

I have the pleasure of working in customer service, and the vast majority of people I interact with are kind and decent people. The small businesses around here are supported and mostly thriving, the neighborhoods are mostly clean, the parks are many, charming, and also well-kept. All of the people I have personally met in this school district and even municipal system are at worst decent, if not warm and helpful.

Gratitude for all of my wonderful neighbors and those who contribute to the abundance of joy there is to be found here in Batavia. I’m glad to have made it my home.

Small Vent

Although the intent is great, some people don’t understand Memorial Day. It’s to acknowledge and remember those who DIED for our country. Veterans have their own day of recognition. One thing most don’t realize is that Active Duty military are not Veterans. After they’re off active duty, unless dishonorably discharged, they’re Veterans.

No loud muffler law in [local town]

I live in [local town] and have 2 neighbors with loud mufflers. I have called the police 3 times but we have no law about loud mufflers. They come and go at all hours and run their car right under my bedroom window. I have asked them to fix their car but no luck. I’m tired of getting woken up and so is my better half. Had to vent… mufflered out.

Really?

What’s wrong with this: a pickup truck passing cars driving 65 in a 55 zone. The tailgate is down. The bed loaded with multiple rakes, gardening equipment, tree branches and a gas can. Nothing tied down. I would put money down that if anything bad happened after hitting a pot hole or bump, the driver would continue on like nothing happened. Where has intelligence gone?

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

A Lyme vaccine is available for dogs, so talk to your vet about getting Shiner this shot. But ticks carry other diseases too. So be sure that Shiner wears a ea-and-tickrepellent collar or takes a ea-andtick (and heartworm) preventative medication.

Keep ticks o of your own skin by treating clothing and gear with permethrin and letting it dry completely before wearing the gear (permethrin should never be applied to your skin). Just before setting out on your hike, spray insect repellent that works on numerous bugs, including ticks and eas, onto your skin.

A er your hike, before getting into the car, check Shiner’s coat for ticks and other bugs. Run your hand along his fur from head to tail to dislodge any critters or debris from the top of his coat. Check under his tail and between the pads of his paws. Shake your gear out and do a tick check on yourself as much as possible.

At home, do a more thorough check of Shiner by running your hands into his coat and visually checking his fur and skin. Remove any embedded ticks using a tick removal tool.

People who get COVID-19 vaccine less likely to die from any cause

DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent column, you referred to a U.K. source that stated “all-cause mortality is very significantly reduced in people who have had the COVID-19 vaccine, compared to unvaccinated people.” I wasn’t sure what you meant by all-cause? Does this mean any and all deaths, with or without COVID-19, for any reason, have been very significantly reduced just by getting the COVID-19 shot? Or does it mean that any and all deaths associated with COVID-19 have been reduced in those who have been vaccinated? If it is the first, then fewer people should be dying, people should be living longer, and we should not see a decrease in life expectancy (except for the addition of those dying from COVID-19, which brings the age down). Anyway, if the first is true, then I will definitely continue getting the COVID-19 shot just to live longer, with or without getting COVID-19! -- C.P.

ANSWER: The U.K. study looked at all-cause mortality, which means anyone who dies from any reason. The study found that getting the COVID-19 vaccine reduced the likelihood of dying from COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 causes. One potential problem studies face is assigning cause of death. If a person with a very serious cancer who is expected to pass away within a few months gets COVID-19 and dies, did the cancer kill them, or did COVID-19? If you have to choose just one cause, the answer could be misleading. That’s why the results of the U.K. study (and a Florida study that showed similar results) were so important. People who get the COVID-19 vaccine are less likely to die from any cause.

In the last few years in the U.S., the longstanding trend of improved mortality has reversed, and death rates are going up, partially due to COVID-19.

DID YOU KNOW?

The human papillomavirus, often referred to as HPV, is a group of more than 150 related viruses. According to the American Cancer Society, HPVs are called “papillomaviruses” because some types cause noncancerous tumors known papillomas, or warts. Some types of HPVs are known to cause cancer, including those of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and parts of the mouth and throat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 79 million people in the United States are currently infected with HPV. HPV vaccines can be very effective, preventing infections that can cause six different types of cancer, but are most effective when administered to older children and teenagers. The ACS notes that doctors recommend boys and girls receive the HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12. In such instances, boys and girls will receive two doses of the vaccine six to 12 months apart. While the vaccine can be administered later, kids or even young adults who do not receive the vaccine when they are between the ages of 15 and 26 will need to receive three doses within an eight-month span.

What are some examples of PA technology? Sensors are a prime example of PA technology that helps make farms more efficient and productive. Sensors serve various functions by helping farmers gather data on the availability of water in soil, the level of compaction in soil, leaf temperature, insect and disease infestation, and other areas. Weather modeling is another component of PA that can help farms be more costeffective and efficient. Whereas in years past many farms would need to manually assess certain variables to determine when to harvest, weather modeling technology has enabled some farmers to generate remote readings, saving time and money.

EVERYTHING BEGINS WITH A PENCIL: AN INTERVIEW WITH ILLUSTRATOR TED WILLIAMS

For many in the world of illustration, Ted Williams needs no introduction. His attention to detail has garnered him both respect and admiration among colleagues. His journey began with a childhood dream: to make a living drawing. Indeed, this dream became a very successful art career, rst in advertising, later in book and magazine illustration, then with publishing his own aviation books. His remarkable talent has opened the door to many interesting projects including the well-known John Deere for Kids Art Property. He likes solving problems for people via his art.

In your childhood, who inspired you?

Growing up I had my heroes. American WWII ying ace, Chuck Yeager, was one. Listening to older generations retell their WWII storiesprovidedmanyexamplesofcourage. emagazineeraenjoyed its heyday in the 1950s, and I was exposed to such illustration greats as Norman Rockwell and Albert Dorne.

One of my educators, Father Cullen, C.S.B., and I became friends in high school. He was truly my art mentor. Under his guidance, I drew and painted many stage sets. My dream of becoming an artist grew even stronger when, in my senior year, I took an art class with Father Cullen. Even a er graduating, Father Cullen and I remained close. He performed the marriage ceremony for my wife, Gail, and me.

However, not all my teachers encouraged me in art. Sister Cyril speci cally reminded me, “Master Williams, I would pay more attention to your studies because you’ll never make a living drawing airplanes.”

Sister Cyril was mistaken. How did your career start?

A er serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, I studied art and design at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Soon, I obtained a job as a dra sman at Kodak where I did technical illustrations by hand. I began to develop a reputation for being good at drawing mechanical things, especially metal objects.

A er Kodak, I became an art director. I worked at several advertising agencies around Rochester. My rst solo agency was a service studio, Williams Advertising Art. Later, I established the Williams Harris Communications Advertising Agency, a full-service marketing communications rm. I spent much of my commercial career designing, writing, and producing communications for companies like GM, Kodak, and Xerox.

A memorable project from this time was when I painted a Supermarine Spit re, a WWII British ghter aircra , for the Spit re Machine Tool Company. e nished oil painting was used in a promotional campaign for the Chicago-based company. A er that, I was contacted by a U.S. Air Force Major who had seen the Spit re painting and wanted me to create a series of aircra paintings for an Air National Guard calendar. From there, I was contacted by Skyways: Journal of the Airplane to depict airplanes in air races. I worked

closely with this publication for many years, producing complex historically-accurate illustrations for many editions. at was a very busy time; I was also illustrating for Houghton Mi in Harcourt and Oxford University Press as well as running an advertising agency. What led you to illustrations for children’s books?

Around this time, I received a call from Parachute Publishing. ey were looking for audition art to revive the John Deere for Kids Property. My previous work with children’s textbooks had piqued my interest in communication with children through art. My audition art was a Santa Claus delivering gi s in a John Deere Gator utility vehicle. Parachute liked it and I restyled all John Deere art for the Johnny Tractor Series. By this time, advertising had crossed into digital art, and this series was the beginning of my specialization in digital art.

What is your creative process?

My creative process begins with a pencil. I draw numerous pencil dra s, which are sample, problem-solving illustrations I create based on what needs to be communicated on each page of the book. From there, I work digitally to produce nal illustrations to be used inside the book. At every stage I consult with a book editor to make sure the entire project is on time, on track, and on budget.

What media do you like to work in?

I sketch by hand and paint in oils. I have a diverse portfolio with examples in many media. While I o en work in oils and have experimented with many other media, I have come to embrace and truly enjoy the digital process as well.

What advice would you give to an aspiring illustrator?

You have to handle rejection. Constantly improve your cra . Talent needs practice every day. Learn new skills so you keep up with the times.

Things to think about while planning a eulogy

* Some churches do not allow eulogies during a church service. Others permit a brief reflection before the service or at the end. If you want a eulogy to be part of a church service, discuss this with the minister. Ask when during the service it is preferred and if there are any guidelines or restrictions to be aware of.

* Other appropriate times for a eulogy may be during an evening service, during a visitation or following the remembrance service at a luncheon or reception.

* If there are to be any readings during the service, the eulogist should be informed.

* If there is to be more than one eulogy given, review this with the minister and coordinate with each speaker. Each speaker should avoid similar stories and themes, and each should be brief.

* Irish author and politician Edmund Burke was not a skilled public speaker. In fact, his speeches at the House of Commons were so boring, many MPs left the building once he stood up.

* While Jackie Robinson was laid up for two weeks in 1948 with a hamstring injury, the Dodgers secretly replaced him with Herschel Morowitz, a white man in black face.

* Drinking seawater will cause rapid dehydration and, if enough is consumed, eventually death. Frozen seawater is a much safer alternative, since it contains only a tenth as much salt as the liquid form, due to the fact that the salt is separated from the water when freezing as it does not fit into the crystalline structure of ice.
