Dust and pollen in the bedroom can make for a disruptive night’s sleep. Wash bedding once per week in hot water if dust mites are proving problematic. If pillows cannot be washed, dry them using high heat to kill dust mites. In addition, cover the mattress in a mattress protector that guards against allergens and dust mites. If pollen is finding its way into the bedroom, always keep bedroom windows closed during allergy season.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Remembering War Dogs DEAR PAW’S CORNER: During Memorial Day week, I wanted to bring your readers’ attention to the service and sacrifice of the thousands of dogs who went to war with their soldiers. Many did not come home, because they either died during operations or were left behind. Please take a few minutes this week to remember these four-footed warriors -- Jim W., Chattanooga DEAR JIM: Request received! Thank you for calling attention to the sacrifices of military working dogs. The U.S. armed forces has had a military dog program since World War II. These canine warriors help detect mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), provide security on bases and much more. Between 2001 and 2013, over 2,600 “war dogs” were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. In that time, at least 92 are known to have died, the majority in combat. However, in all this time, there was no military-wide tracking system of its injured war dogs. How often were they injured or killed? What were their injuries like? How did they fare after their service? Data that would be helpful in treating other injured war dogs was being lost. In January, funding was passed for a Military Working Dogs Trauma Registry (for details, go to www.avma. org and search for “working dogs, combat injuries”). Veterinarians will be able to consult the registry to learn more about war dog combat injuries and better ways to treat them. Injured war dogs will have a better chance of survival. Retired dogs will be able to get more effective treatment for their wounds. This legislation is a huge, active step toward truly honoring the sacrifices of military working dogs and can help even more of them come home. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Patient History More Than Just Medical Facts ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 77 years old. When

Celebrating 20 Years

I go to a new doctor, there is always that past history form to fill out. I know to include current medications, including OTC and allergies, but how far back should I go? Should I include the tonsillectomy when I was in grade school (I don’t recall how old I was)? Or the surgery to remove a benign tumor from my right femur in 1955? The miscarriage in 1961? Or that the last of my five children was born over 40 years ago? I would include the surgery because my right leg is about 3/4 inch shorter than my left. After all these years, it causes a backache after standing too long. -- S.B. ANSWER: In general, doctors want all the information you can give. However, past medical history tends to become less important as people get older. I agree with you that the surgery on your femur is important: Even now, a leglength discrepancy may still benefit from being addressed. A small (half the discrepancy or less) adjustment to the shoe of your shorter right leg may help reduce your backache. If I were your new doctor, it would be important to me to know you had a 40-year-old son (and about the rest of your children), but that would be more to know who you are as a person. I also ask my patients to identify someone in their family who can help make decisions if you are unable to. That should be done formally, through a health care proxy designation, which is complementary to the advance directive that all adults should have. It’s a privilege for me as a primary care doctor to get to know my patients and follow them over years, sometimes many years.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Vax “Rules” First of all, there are no “rules” within a community when it comes to vaccinating. Secondly, you have some nerve telling people to go into seclusion because of their choice to not take a vaccine that is not FDA approved and is only in its trial stages. If you’re vaccinated, then what are you afraid of? Supposedly, you are protected from the virus, so those of us who are unvaccinated should not be a threat to you. That was a very arrogant statement you made there.

S E V RA Kindness I want to thank the nice lady who helped my mother who is on a walker and myself on a cane, to get a beautiful fuchsia plant down at [local store] off [local road]. Neither myself or the young girl working in that department could reach the plant. This kind lady got it down for us, and we told her we wanted it to attract hummingbirds. It is nice to know that there are still kind and wonderful people out there to help others. Thank you so very much. And to the lady behind us in line complaining that we were slowing her up because she only wanted to pay for mulch: Maybe someday you will get older, and it will take you time to get your money out. I hope someone just like you is behind you in line! Maybe you should also apologize to your husband who you screamed at about us. Why can’t everyone be kind like the other lady was? Hats off to Nick! Hats off to Nick at UR Urgent Care in Spencerport! On Thursday night, I called the Urgent Care for my husband. Unfortunately, they were not opened. I left a message, and they said that someone would call back. With the holiday weekend approaching, I never really expected to hear back from anyone. I was quite surprised when the next morning, I received a call from Nick at Urgent Care. He called up to see what was going on and how he could help. He was kind, concerned, and very pleasant. I was impressed! In fact, after the initial call, he called again to ask me if I wanted to speak to a provider. In the stressfilled world we find ourselves in, sometimes people can unintentionally overlook things. This can be especially true with those in high profile occupations such as those in the medical environment. So, Nick making sure that he contacted me after hearing my message was quite a relief and truly appreciated by my family and I.

Vaccine Seclusion Vaccines have never been a part of any rules for living in a community. You must be living on Animal Farm where you come from. It appears as though the coronavirus hysterics are still alive and well. I’m not vaccinated. What are you going to do about that? I have not worn a mask nor social distanced since this whole pandemic kicked off, and I never once got sick. Boy, the petty, irrelevant garbage that people will concern themselves with never ceases to amaze me.

Whether to vaccinate Yes, it’s your body and your choice, but when you get infected, you risk the lives of all of those around you. I’m sure you’ll expect medical personnel to risk their lives and well-being to care for you. So, don’t get vaccinated, but please stay home when you become ill. No masks at the grocery store? I’ve read the statistics and know half the population is not vaccinated. Why then is no one wearing a mask in this heavily-trafficked public place? If you haven’t gotten your vaccine make the right choice and wear your mask!

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles What You Can Do About Rising Food Prices According to the Consumer Price Index, food prices from one year ago have gone up 3.3%. It’s not going to stop there. Non-food prices are going up as well, as companies struggle to find the raw materials and manpower they need to produce everything else. Fitness equipment, furniture, lumber, gas, electronics -- it’s all going up. What we have to be concerned with, however, is our most basic need: food. Even if you’ve never felt any urgency before, check into your local food bank. Keep the information handy, just in case you need it later. Look at store brands. Many are even better than the name brands. Make every dollar count. Sign up for a grocery store rewards card, if it’s available. Use a private throwaway email address, the one you use to sign up for things that might generate too much junk mail. You’ll likely get emails about sales with coupons. (At my store, I log in at the checkout and get cash back at the end of each quarter.) Look to your own vegetable garden or farmers markets as ways to save. If you want to do canning this summer, one heads up: Be certain you can get the jars, lids and rings at the same time. They might be in short supply. Freezing meals is another option and ensures that food is always available. Double a stew or soup recipe and buy in bulk when it makes sense to. Shop from a list to the extent you can, knowing that stores can be out of things you want. Consider having breakfast for dinner one night a week, and one meatless dinner. Plan meals around what’s on sale each week. It bears repeating: Find out about your local food bank. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Revolutionary War Patriot Eber Blakeslee & the Spy BY RICHARD BLAKESLEY, 4 times great-grandson to Eber Blakeslee; Edited

T

his narrative is written by his 4x great grandson Richard Blakesley, Bloomfield NY. This information comes from National Archives pension file #S.23.129 & many other historical records. The pension was filed by two of his children, William Blakeslee [the author’s 3 times great grandfather] & his sister Mary H. Williams in 1853, five years after Eber’s death. Eber Blakeslee (Blakesley) was born in New London, Connecticut on October 1st, 1761. He joined the Connecticut Continental Navy in 1776 in which he served as a gunner on the schooner Spy for a period of 7 months, June 8, 1776 thru January 8, 1777. Herein lies a mystery. He turned age 15 halfway thru his tour of duty. During his tour he was paid 31.10 pounds, about a year’s wages, the same rate as the boatswain, ships clerk & ships carpenter. They were the third highest paid seamen, just under the Ship’s Lieutenant. The question is, where did a 14-15-year-old get the training to be a full-fledged gunner? Eber was on at least four cruises aboard the Spy, commanded by Captain Robert Niles, during which two prize ships were captured. The first was the schooner Hannah & Elizabeth loaded with rum & sugar on August 22, 1776. The second was the Hope loaded with rum, sugar, molasses, cocoa, and coffee on August 27, 1776. Unfortunately, the Hope was recaptured by a British frigate along with the prize crew. Luckily, Eber was not among them. The Spy, with Eber aboard, was also involved in a successful raid at Setauket Long Island to capture a company of Loyalists [Americans loyal to Britain] on September 20, 1776. Another mystery arises regarding Eber’s service. Why did a young seaman earning big wages and prize money serve only seven months? A clue may found in a pension deposition filed by a family friend. He relates a story told many times by Eber. Eber said, “While cruising [in the Spy] we came in with a vessel which did not show any color [flag] nor answer when we hailed them. Concluding to open their card, I without orders from anyone, loaded up the gun lying upon the deck upon the vessel and fired which caused them to run up their colors which proved to be American. The strange craft knew ours and was testing our courage by remaining silent and without colors.” What Captain Niles and his crew thought about this was not recorded. They probably were very unhappy. Their mission was to capture British merchant ships for prize money, not get into a gunfight with a British warship. Eber’s move was a reckless act, and it is likely only his youth saved him from a sound flogging. The Spy went on to glory without him by delivering a treaty of alliance to France in 1788. On the return voyage, the ship was captured by the British. Captain Nile returned home to more glory while the crew was probably pressed into British service. Eber was not with them, so he was one lucky boy for the second time. What Eber did after leaving navy service is not known for certain. A story related in the pension record by his daughter Mary relates this portion of his life as follows: “He joined the Connecticut troops as a private but held a Lieutenant’s commission at the taking of Fort Groton and served as an officer until the end of the war.” The actual fort’s name was Fort Griswold located on the Thames River at Groton, Connecticut.

Photo 1: Eber & Sarah Blakeslee’s final resting place Photo 2: The Spy It protected the river ports including the Spy’s home port of New London. The fort was destroyed by British troops under Benedict Arnold in 1781. Although there is no documented proof, the story has plausibility. Eber, age 22, was a trained gunner and lived in New London. If true, Eber was again a lucky boy. The British killed 88 out of 160 defenders, most after they had surrendered. After the war, Eber moved to Middletown, Connecticut, and married young Miss Sarah Ward on January 31, 1788. Sarah had been born in Middletown on August 22, 1771. During the following 26 years, they had 12 children and moved nine times to four different states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New York. Sarah died on September 5, 1829 and was buried in Reed Corners Cemetery, Town of Gorham, New York. Eber died in Prattsburg, New York on March 27, 1848. He is buried alongside Sarah. He was without a memorial marker until the author obtained one in 2004. That stone contained errors. The author obtained and installed a new one in 2013. Both were obtained through the Veterans Administration. For more information see website blaecwulf.com
