WHAT IS A WILL?

The online financial resource Investopedia notes that wills are legally enforceable documents that dictate how people want their affairs handled and assets allocated in the wake of their deaths.

Wills should include a host of information, including who a person wants to assume guardianship of their minor-aged children should they pass away. This is especially important information to include in a will, as surviving relatives may have to go to court to contest guardianship if parents do not dictate who they want to serve as guardians in their wills.

General eulogy preparation tips:

Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service.

Time has stood still since that tragic night, Anthony, when you were taken from your loving family.

It’s been a year already, Anthony, but it seems like yesterday. We miss you every day: your funny jokes, your laughter, and that beautiful smile.

You were a loving son, always there to help us and others. You may not be here now, but you will never be forgotten.

Anthony, you touched so many lives in such a short time. We would have loved to see you grow old with your family.

We are so proud of all your achievements and the honors you have received from the Rochester Police Department and the Tactical Unit 8.

We were so grateful for the time we had with you, Anthony, and the wonderful memories we shared.

The heartache and pain will never go away now that you are gone, but you will never be forgotten. We know you are watching over all your Family and Friends. Until we meet again, our son, be happy with all your family in Heaven. We know you are safe and at peace with God.

Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments?

Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander.

Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself.

Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people).

Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.
