Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

PROTECT YOUR FLOORS A way to prolong the life of flooring is to protect it from wear and tear. Removing shoes before walking indoors can help. Avoid high heels and athletic cleats, which can create divots in hardwood and some other types of flooring. Place indoor and outdoor mats at the entrances of the home to catch any dirt that would be ground into the flooring. Furniture protectors will help prevent scratches from furniture feet while moving pieces around a room. Remember to wipe up spills when they occur to prevent the formation of stains.

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Let well-fed lawns go dormant during drought. Lengthy droughts tend to be accompanied by water restrictions, and such restrictions can frustrate homeowners who don’t want to see all of the hard work they’ve put in to this point go to waste. But grass that has thus far been well cared for can withstand drought and still recover when rains once again fall and temperatures cool come autumn. If you plan to let the lawn go dormant, keep kids, pets and visitors off the grass, as dormant lawns are highly susceptible to damage.
We will beat any Roof Estimate by $1,000!

CONSERVE WATER WHEN TEMPERATURES RISE Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

ornell Cooperative Extension provides the educational outreach functions for Cornell University’s role as New York State’s Land Grant University. Harvest New York is an innovative Cornell Cooperative Extension team that focuses on the food and beverage value chains, workforce development and business expansion projects to increase profitability and investment in key sectors of New York’s agriculture industry. The project areas covered by Harvest New York are Local Food Distribution and Marketing (including Farm to School), Urban Agriculture and Gardens, Farm-Based Beverages, Emerging Crops, and Agricultural Economic Development/Local Supply Chain Management.
Food-based gardening is a beneficial activity that leads to the economical production and consumption of healthy and fresh food. Community gardens in particular have the potential to contribute Alison Espinosa to community resiliency, social and environmental justice, and food sovereignty. This program seeks to contribute to the successful production, harvesting, safe food handling, sustainability, nutrition, and food access for community gardens across New York State. Recently, Harvest NY added Alison Espinosa to our team. Alison is a Central Florida native and after graduating high school relocated to Cayuga County, New York where she gained a true reverence for bucolic living and WNY agriculture while working on a horse farm in Union Springs. Alison is a Certified Veterinary Technician of 11 years with a strong background in veterinary medical terminology, companion animal as well as livestock health in clinical, emergent, farm and research settings. As an Herbalist, Alison is also expanding her education and currently pursues a diploma in Advanced Master Herbalism with the emphasis of plants as medicine/nutrition for humans and animals/livestock, alike. Case Management and Care Coordination for underserved communities are also passions Alison possesses after years of working with high-risk populations in Denver, Colorado before relocating back to the Finger Lakes Region.

Alison is currently part of Building Strong and Vibrant New York Communities, owns and runs her farm on over an acre of land in Ontario County and specializes in herb gardens, greenhouse growing, seed starting, seed saving, pollinator gardening, poultry and livestock care. The surplus of produce from her farm is provided to local members of the Rochester community facing food apartheid. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Exercise Can Reduce Risk of Alzheimer’s Can we do this? Exercise twice a week for 10 minutes each time to prevent Alzheimer’s disease? Of course we can. Researchers examined the records and followed the progress of 250,000 patients who had mild cognitive impairment. They concluded that moderate physical activity more than once a week reduced the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 18%. We need to do more for our brain health than work the daily crossword puzzle or brush up on our chess skills. Physical exercise protects the brain, too, per the study. The key is that it should be moderate to vigorous exercise. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, examples of moderate exercise include walking 3-4 mph (a brisk walk while you’re still able to hold a conversation), vacuuming and washing windows, mowing the lawn and doubles tennis. Other sources are more specific: water aerobics for 30 minutes and raking leaves for 30 minutes. For comparison, examples of light exercise include washing dishes and using a computer. Vigorous exercises are things like shoveling, singles tennis and playing basketball or soccer. Having said that, there are more parts of our bodies that need exercise than just our brains. That’s where more time in an activity comes into play. Instead of a mere 10 minutes per day, we’re told to shoot for 150 minutes of exercise per week, or 30 minutes onr five days. One place to start developing an exercise plan is Mayoclinic.org. Type “moderate exercise” in the search box and scroll down the results until you find something interesting. Among the 600 choices are frequency of workout, using weighted hula hoops, Zumba, secrets to a healthy heart and so much more. The earlier in life we start exercising for our brains and bodies, the longer we’ll stay healthy as we age. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

In Honor of Rauber Family, owners of Agway - Wayland, NY The friendly Rauber family will no longer tend the store. We wish the very best for you, in all your new endeavors, and please remember,
Lifeguards at Deep Run Beach Thank you to the Deep Run Beach lifeguards who safeguarded my Border Collie who had run across Rt. 364 to the beach to take a swim in the lake. They secured her with a rope; they had and tried to find her owner in a nearby neighborhood with no success. Without knowing if anyone would show up, they held on to her, saving her from traffic, until I showed up in my car to bring her back to our home on the other side of Rt. 364. Thank you so much for preventing her from getting hit by a car. You went above and beyond, and I am so very grateful! We are reinstalling our electric fence to keep her in the yard.
Dipper Dan loves libraries! The Lima Public Library wants to give a special thank you to Dipper Dan in Honeoye Falls for donating 25 single scoop cone coupons. We are so grateful for their generosity and their support for literacy. The coupons are part of our prize package. If you registered for our program and completed your game board, stop in and pick up your gift bag! Thankful family The Mairs Family would like to thank the staff of the Livingston County Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the excellent care and compassion shown to our Pete during his recent stay. Words cannot express how grateful we are. Also, we appreciate all of the kind words and acts of love from our family, friends, and community. We will miss him.
S T N RA Social Security not doubled Self employed people don’t pay double. They are confusing themselves with their company. They are two different entities. The company pays half, and they pay half. Their company gets all the legal deductions a company gets, and they get a paycheck. They get all the extra perks that come with owning a company: a company car / truck, business trips, etc. If they don’t want to pay, don’t take a paycheck. Simple solution.

Can Lyme Disease Lead to Parkinson’s ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Can Lyme disease send a person into Parkinson’s disease? I tested positive for Lyme -- I had the bulls-eye rash, fever and terrible headaches. After a month on doxycycline, my left arm started shaking and my neurologist diagnosed me with Parkinson’s. The doctor said it had nothing to do with the Lyme disease. What is your opinion? -- S.M. ANSWER: I can absolutely understand why you might suspect that the neurologist could be wrong. The coincidence seems too much to believe. However, I think your neurologist is probably correct. The different types of neurological complications of Lyme disease are many and varied. The most common are any combination of meningitis symptoms (inflammation of the lining of the brain, with headache, fever, stiff neck and light sensitivity); disorders of the cranial nerves (especially the facial nerve, so people with neurological Lyme disease can look like they have Bell’s palsy); and damage to peripheral nerves, causing pain and weakness or numbness, often resembling sciatica (but may include other parts of the body). A detailed neurological exam by a neurologist would look for signs of Parkinson’s disease -- not just the tremor you describe, but also muscle rigidity and changes in gait. These would be very unusual in Lyme disease. I did find cases resembling some aspects of Parkinson’s disease, but they improved with treatment. It is possible that the stress of the Lyme disease hastened the onset of Parkinson’s disease you were destined to get. I say your neurologist is “probably correct” because what I found -- absence of data to support a correlation -- does not mean that there is no correlation, and it is possible that time may prove Lyme disease is connected to Parkinson’s. However, I think it’s unlikely.

Summer health and beauty guidelines Try tinted moisturizer. A carefree, breezy look often means not being weighed down by a lot of makeup. It may be possible to skip foundation and rely only on concealer to cover up small blemishes or alleviate dark circles under the eyes. Another option to try is tinted moisturizer, which can keep skin supple and offer a light amount of color to even out pigment. BB creams also can provide you with an all-in-one beauty product, as such creams frequently contain sunscreen, color tinting and anti-aging ingredients.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES
Puzzle Answers This Week
Make your own meals. Meal plans may be ideal for college students during their freshmen years, when students may still be adjusting to campus life. But older college students can skip the meal plan in favor of preparing their own meals. Doing so can save students substantial amounts of money, and some students may even prefer the variety available at the local grocery store over the more limited offerings available at dining halls or other campus eateries.
