Repeatedly flipping and squeezing meat and poultry can cause flavorful juices to leak out. Then you’re left with dried-out food. Resist any urges to prod and poke food. And minimize how many times you lift the grill cover to take a peek, as that can cause temperatures to fluctuate. Use a thermometer to determine when food is done. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought. Many an amateur landscaper has encountered grubs while tending to their lawns, but even the most attentive green thumber may have a lawn infested with grubs and not know it. According to the pest and weed experts at Roundup® , grubs often go unnoticed until late summer, when they’ve already done substantial damage to a lawn. Oddly enough, one of the telltales signs of a grub infestation is not the grubs themselves but the animals looking to dine on them. Fully grown grubs make for hearty meals, so homeowners who notice raccoons, skunks, armadillos, and/or birds digging up their lawns may have a grub infestation. That’s because these unwanted guests like to dine on mature grubs who have spent summer feasting on organic matter in the soil. Another sign of a possible grub infestation is a lawn that feels spongy when stepped on. Patches of dead grass that peel back easily are a sign that grubs have eaten the roots that keep healthy grass in place. 585-261-5681 Kevin Doser Stone - All types (Driveway Stone, Drainage Stone, Pea Stone) Sand - Mason, Concrete/FinePool, Screened Topsoil Quality Competitiveservice.prices. earthworkstruckingLLC.com TRUCKING, LLC

Smart watering conserves water and saves money Start early. Homeowners may feel that the hottest times of the day are when lawns and gardens will be most in need of water, so that’s the best time to set sprinklers or grab the hose and get to work. But in many areas, watering between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when summer temperatures tend to peak, can be both wasteful and ineffective. That’s because watering between those hours will cause much of the water to quickly evaporate, robbing lawns and gardens of the water they need to withstand the heat. who water when water is most likely to evaporate may feel they need to water more, and that only wastes water. time a.m. and a.m., when lower, the peak and are as strong.

By Keith Roach, M.D.
Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia:
• Difficulty completing complex tasks.
Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may
• Challenges with planning and organization.
DEAR DR. ROACH: Several months ago, I started adding 25 grams of whey protein to an afternoon smoothie each day. I was worried about muscle loss after reading an article. I have seen the sagging muscles and skin in my arms and thighs. I am a 71-year-old woman, who plays tennis twice a week and goes to the gym about once a week. I have friends my age who have started adding collagen powders to their smoothies to improve their skin and prevent further facial wrinkles. After researching collagen supplements, I learned that they contain collagen peptides and protein. The dosage and ingredients vary by vendor. What is the correct collagen dosage and ingredients I should be looking for? Is the protein in collagen the same as the protein in whey? -- R.K. ANSWER: All proteins, such as whey and collagen, are long strands of amino acids. A “peptide” is two or more amino acids connected, while a “polypeptide” is 20 or more amino acids. A protein is a polypeptide that has a function in the organism. Proteins are broken down by acid and enzymes in your stomach, back into their component amino acids, to be used anyplace the body has need for them. Part of the reason that skin wrinkles is loss of collagen, but it is not at all clear that consuming more collagen, or any protein, will increase the collagen in the skin and therefore reduce wrinkles. You can save a great deal of money by consuming collagen, if you decide you want to, from time-honored sources like chicken broth. Some collagen supplements are made from parts of animal carcasses that contain heavy metals and other toxins, so I would be wary of supplements. Medicated creams like vitamin A derivatives (such as retinol or tretinoin) work by increasing collagen production in the skin. Vitamin C creams help prevent the breakdown of the existing collagen in the skin. Vitamin C breaks down quickly, so these creams need to be handled sparingly. Moisturizing the skin makes it appear fuller and helps prevent further damage, especially when a daily sunscreen is included. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation.
• Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party.
• Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia.

Simply reducing exposure can help prevent skin cancers and other damage. This includes wearing wide-brimmed hats, applying sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, avoiding the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and wearing sun-protective clothing. Tanning beds are not safer for the skin than being out in the sun, so they should be avoided. Patient Focused • Family Friendly • Restorative Dentistry www.JillNikasDDS.com YOURREFRESHSMILE! Dominic Pezzimenti was nominated by coworker Christine White, as well. “I became involved because I always think it’s good to give back when you can, and Christine thought I had the drive and personality for it. CFF and RF are such a top-notch group, and it’s nothing short of an honor to be a part of it. CF can be such a burden to those living with it, and CFF has paved great paths to help those living with this disease,” Pezzimenti added. “I have learned so much during my time with CFF and RF, not only regarding fundraising and the wide range of smart and unique people we have in this area, but also regarding the visibility CFF and RF create for a disease that does not get a lot of attention, yet deeply impacts people living right here in our communities.”
The WNY Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation announces the CFF Rochester’s Finest Class of 2022. This year’s honorees (with employer) are:
• Byron-Bergen Senior Participates in Boys’ State
Alex Querns, Livingston Associates Tom Rickettson, Woods Oviatt Gilman, LLP Anthony Sanganetti, LaBella Associates Michael Sellars, Ameriprise Financial, LLC Matthew Stives, KeyBank Marin Valentino, URMC Patrick Williams, Passero Associates
BY PATTY SCHWARZWELLER, EXPANDED BY AMANDA DUDEK “When I was nominated for Rochester’s Finest by my mentor and RF 2020 graduate, Christine White, I decided to get involved so that I could learn more about cystic brosis and help raise funds for a cure,” said Mackenzie McGrain. “I met a wonderful woman who had been diagnosed with CF as a baby. She invited me into her home and showed me what her daily CF routine looks like. I was shocked at how many medications and precautions she had to take several times daily, without which her life expectancy would be shortened, and her organ function would drop signi cantly low. CFF and RF are very important in their work to raise CF awareness, to raise funds for necessary medications and equipment, and to hopefully nd a permanent cure for CF,” McGrain added. “I have met amazing individuals who commit their time and e orts to this, and I am honored to be a part of the RF Class of 2022!”

The Rochester’s Finest are honored for their career success, commitment to the community and dedication to raising funds and awareness to help support CF research, patient services, and other mission-based initiatives of the CF Foundation. e program runs for 12 weeks and culminates in a celebration of their accomplishments on September 15, 2022. Included in the program are opportunities for professional development, networking, and developing skills as a leadership volunteer.“Together with our community we are transforming cystic brosis from a deadly childhood disease to the best story in medicine,” said Heather McKeever, Executive Director of the WNY Chapter. “When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was rst founded, children with CF typically did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are achieving milestones like going to college and starting families of their own. We are making incredible progress, but we can’t do it alone. We invite everyone in the Rochester community to help us make ‘CF’ stand not for cystic brosis, but for ‘Cure Found.’” ree of this year’s prestigious Rochester’s Finest (RF) honorees are outstanding employees of Genesee Valley Publications: Sarah Christ, Mackenzie McGrain, and Dominic Pezzimenti. “I was nominated for Rochester’s Finest by my coworker, a RF graduate from 2021, Laurie Abbott,” shared Sarah Christ. “At the Creekside event where we fundraised for CFF last year, I met Patty Schwarzweller, the Associate Executive Director at CCF of WNY, and I instantly fell in love with her passion for CFF and RF. A few of my friends’ family members live with cystic brosis and have bene tted directly from CF, so I was honored to get involved.” Christ was paired with CFF Ambassador. “I had the privilege of meeting Nicole and her 13-year-old son Nate who shared his journey with CFF,” she said. “Nicole shared how CFF and RF had made development and research resulting in breakthrough treatments and medications possible. RF gave me the opportunity to network and get involved with my community, to learn about CFF and raise funds in a fun and creative way, and to develop a personal connection with someone living with CF.”

* To clean out the drawers of my husband’s tool cabinet without disturbing the tools, I tucked a knee-high panty hose leg over my vacuum cleaner wand. Most things stayed put, but the one or two small pieces of hardware that got sucked up were easily retrieved. I also did this on his workbench. I picked up all the dust and shavings along with the stray pieces of hardware. I pulled them out of the hose leg, and they were in a tidy pile for him to put away. -- U.L. in Kansas

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Getting Ready for Medicare Open Enrollment
Before we know it, that yearly event will be here -- when we have to decide what to do about our Medicare plans between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7 for coverage that will begin Jan. 1. ere are several things we have to consider, such as taking on a prescription drug plan or changing to a new one, or staying with original Medicare or going with an Advantage plan or changing Advantage plans or going back to original Medicare. All these take time to think about. oughts to consider: What will Social Security look like in 2023? We won’t know the Social Security increase until it is announced in October. ere have been guesses that we might receive as much as a 10.5% increase, which calculates to $175 for the average bene ciary. e Part B premium will be deducted from We’rethat.likely looking at an 8.5% increase in Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans costs. Check the costs of your prescriptions over the past three years, because for some of us, that’s where the big-ticket expenses are. Chances are the drug costs have gone up, possibly even signi cantly. And chances are they’re not coming down. What to do, what to do ... Two options are worth looking at: GoodRx (www.goodrx.com) and Marc Cuban CostPlus Drug Company (costplusdrugs.com). Both o er discounted prices on prescription drugs. Investigate and see what you think. A Kaiser study concluded that seven out of 10 people did not research the plans during open enrollment. Because of the rising costs of everything in our lives, this needs to be the year that we compare, compare, compare. When in doubt, look into SHIP, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, which is in every state, sta ed by volunteers who can help you wade through the Medicare information. Call them at 877-839-2675 for the one near you. c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Whether it’s perfecting your golf game, writing that novel, learning to cook like a gourmet chef or whatever else you might have always wanted to do, retirement is a great time to do it. • Volunteer. If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community. Volunteers are always in demand, and volunteering with a local charity can provide a sense of purpose and provide opportunities to meet likeminded fellow retirees, all while helping to quell your boredom. 244-8400 lifespanrochester.org G –ivea-Lift Mary, like some of your neighbors, can’t drive anymore. Congratulations, Avon Corn Fest! Thank you to the Avon Rotary Club and all those who worked so hard to make this year’s Corn Festival one of the best yet! After a two year hiatus due to Covid, it was wonderful to come together as a community again and enjoy the music, the food, and the great entertainment! Nicely Done! A shout out to the Avon Class of 1972 for hosting a wonderful Reunion Banquet dinner this past Friday! All classes are welcome to join again next year as the class of 1973 will host. Thank you, local drive-in! My family and I visited a local drive-in movie theatre over the weekend and were very favorably No Good Deed On August 11th, I was heading to work when a small black and white dog ran in front of my vehicle. I caught it and called my daughter to come get it and start going door-to-door. She proceeded to do so and was advised to go to the post office and leave a flyer. While there, she asked a guy if he recognized the dog. He didn’t, but said he would house the dog and put up a flyer as we had a big dog at home and didn’t know how he will welcome a small dog. I also posted it on our town's Facebook page. Later, the owner found out who we were, came to our home, and confronted my daughter. Instead of being grateful, our neighbor was angry that we didn’t have the dog and proceeded to call the cops on us. They didn't need to be involved, and it wasted their time. A police officer showed up, took our account, and advised us to try to contact the guy. Come to find out, this isn’t the first dog I’ve rescued of hers. How about be grateful that someone decided to stop and help rather than drive off? No Support Can you please tell me why it is so difficult to obtain papers for a support dog? My friend, age 62, who is on disability for arthritis of the spine and PTSD, was once a surgeon's assistant. She had two boys who became Green Berets and fought eight years in Iraq. They're in Texas and California now. She has two grandchildren she has never met. Her family (two 82-year-old parents) will not help her. She's on apartment waiting lists. None accept a small Yorkie Terrier. That's her family now, a small dog which most apartments will not accept unless the person has support dog papers. When she asked the doctor for help, the doctor made her undergo the doctor's idea of therapy - psychiatric medicine and a 20-year-old therapist. No papers were ever provided. coupon.

We are being overrun by boxelder bugs! There are no box elder trees nearby that I can find. However, the tree that has those “helicopters” hangs over my garage (not my tree). I can kill the ones I find with soapy water, but they just keep coming. Soapy water will intercept many bugs. Depending on where they are located and annoying you may make a difference in how you go about trying to stop them. Boxelder bugs may be found on a structure foundation at this time of year but are not looking for winter quarters so not likely to appear inside. They can seem to just keep coming. There may be two generations a year. In the fall, the population is determinate, so they won’t keep coming forever. You might be able to beat them this way if you are persistent. Keep washing them off the side of the house. Being on guard in the fall may be a difficult task as their march – or flight - continues after you have intercepted a batch. The bug prefers seed bearing boxelder trees. It feeds on the seed case (helicopter) similar to all maples. Some sources indicate removal of the seed bearing boxelder trees will alleviate the problem. Boxelder bugs do not do serious damage to trees and other plants and are not a risk for stinging. They lay eggs mostly in boxelder trees and elsewhere including those helicopter seed wings lying as debris on the Vacuumground. up box elder bugs and dispose of contents in a tight container. The contents will likely smell bad. A shop vac could contain soapy water.

Powdery mold has been plaguing my zucchini, cucumber and squash plants for the past few years, in spite of many attempts to get rid of it! What’s the best solution to this problem? Powdery mildew on these plants is very common, especially toward the end of the season. It can be reduced or avoided by providing good air circulation – open space, staking and weed control among the plants, watering with a soaker hose instead of overhead, and avoiding excess application of fertilizer or late season fertilizing. It is easier to prevent than to treat. There are resistant varieties available. Fungicides including organic remedies are available. Lower and upper leaf surfaces should be treated. This link provides more details for this problem: https://extension. fruit-vegetable-diseases/powdery-mildew.wvu.edu/lawn-gardening-pests/plant-disease/

Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path.
