A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. Most Common Cause Behind Teary Eyes Are Dry Eyes

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 74-year-old woman who loves to read the newspaper every morning. I have a problem that’s not serious, just annoying. My eyes tear up frequently while I read, causing me to wipe them. After I’m done reading, the problem stops. I see my ophthalmologist every year and have my vision glasses updated as needed. I am not yet a candidate for cataract surgery. Could you enlighten me about a probable cause for this irritating problem? -- A.H.G.

ANSWER: By all means, ask your ophthalmologist at your next visit, but the most common cause I see for watery, tearing eyes are ... dry eyes! This apparent paradox is caused by the fact that your eyes have three different fluids.

One of them, called meibum, is a long-lasting, oily material secreted by the meibomian glands, found around the edges of the eyelids near the eyelashes. This covers the eye and prevents fluid from evaporating quickly. Without this fluid, the lacrimal gland (near the temple above each eye) then has to make a lot of its watery secretions, which cause symptoms of tearing. Most commonly, the meibomian glands get clogged up by secretions becoming dry. Gently cleansing the eyelash area with warm water and baby shampoo helps many people unclog these glands. Artificial tears lubricate the eye and will reduce the symptoms of watery eyes (and maybe some eye irritation, too, which you might not have mentioned). ***

THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT

What are the best ways to decrease belly fat? Individuals with substantial belly fat should work in concert with their physicians to develop a healthy regimen to decrease that fat. A combination of diet and exercise is generally recommended, but how much exerciseandwhichfoodstoeatwilldependonindividuals’currentconditionsandmedical histories. So it’s imperative that individuals speak to their physicians before making any drastic changes to their diets and fitness regimens.

HOW TO AVOID MUSCLE SORENESS

Muscle soreness can affect people from all walks of life. While exercise enthusiasts who work out several times per week may feel like they should be immune to muscle soreness, this potentially painful condition that can adversely affect quality of life can fell even the most ardent fitness fanatic.

Those who find themselves routinely battling muscle soreness can employ the following tactics to feel better and enjoy the fruits of their labors in the gym.

Listen to your body. Daily exercise can greatly benefit long-term health, but it’s important that men and women listen to their bodies, paying attention to any signs that it might be time for a break. Each person is different, but exercise aficionados who recognize any abnormal signs such as unexplained fatigue or cramps may need to take a day off. Bodies need time to recover after a workout.

Get adequate sleep. Getting enough sleep provides recovery time. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 years of age get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. The NSF recommends adults 65 and older get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night.

Don’t overdo it. Pushing a body too hard increases a person’s risk of injury or illness. Muscles that are overtaxed will very likely begin to feel a type of pain known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. The American College of Sports Medicine notes that any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on muscle may lead to DOMS, but activities such as strength training exercises, walking down hills, jogging, step aerobics, and jumping are known examples of contributors to DOMS. Such activities should not necessarily be avoided, but it’s important that men and women not push themselves to the point of overexertion when performing them.

Stay hydrated. Muscle soreness may appear if men and women are not drinking enough water before, during or after their workouts. A dehydrated body’s muscles do not have enough electrolytes, and that can be contributing to the feelings of soreness some exercise enthusiasts feel. Drink lots of water throughout the day, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle along to the gym when working out.

Muscle soreness can be painful and difficult to deal with. But the solution to address such soreness is oftentimes very simple.

Why are you supposed to take off the “suckers” on tomato plants if they still produce fruit?

You do not need to take the suckers off but if you do not, you will end up with a lot of branches and probably a lot of small tomatoes if you are lucky.. The added branches will shade other parts of the plant and encourage mold and bacteria to grow since rainwater would not evaporate off the leaves as quickly compared to one that you prune. The extra branches also take up energy that could be used in producing larger fruit. So, depending on what you want from

your tomatoes, pruning off branches might be something you will want to do.

You could try an experiment in your garden to see for yourself what happens with and without pruning. Just a side, at the beginning, if you root some of the suckers, you could get a few more plants that will produce tomatoes for you before frost kills them.

Strolling Downtown

Due to COVID, restaurants understandably added outside sidewalk seating. Our village downtown restaurants have done so, and we have enjoyed their service. Unfortunately, some of the tables are too large and have seating that spills out almost to the curb. Pedestrians should not be forced to step down into the street and around parked cars to get past those seated at tables. This is especially difficult for parents pushing strollers, wheelchair users and senior citizens. Restaurant managers, please use smaller tables or push them up against the building, limiting the number of chairs at the tables. This would provide a wider path for pedestrian use.

Keep it in your car

People! Stop throwing trash out of your car! The amount of garbage in the roads, on the side of highways, and in the grass is pure disrespect and laziness. If you’re picking up fast food, the paper bag and your wrappers do not belong in the road. Your plastic cup that had your soda in it from the convenient store does not belong in the road. Have some respect for the environment. The animals do not deserve to have their habitats polluted because you don’t want the trash in your car. YOUR GARBAGE=YOUR PROBLEM. We should be able to drive around and see the beauty in Rochester, not all the garbage that needs to get picked up. Show some respect. It’s not other people’s job to clean up after your mess. Wait until you get home to throw it out properly. In YOUR own trash can.

Local 4-H Youth Experience Japanese Culture This Summer in International Exchange Program

In a heartwarming display of cultural exchange and international camaraderie, twenty-seven New York State families have generously opened their homes to young visitors from Japan, thanks to the 4-H Youth Development program. is initiative by theNewYorkState4-HO ceatCornellUniversity,incollaboration with County Cornell Cooperative Extension o ces throughout the state, fosters a deep appreciation for global connections and cultural diversity.

e program, known as the NYS 4-H Japanese Exchange, brought 25 Japanese youth, aged 13 to 17, and two adult chaperones at the end of July. ese enthusiastic participants were promptly welcomed into the embrace of host families across 22 New York State counties, from Western NY to the Hudson Valley. Several families across Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes hosted this summer. e experience has been a transformative journey for both the visiting delegates and their gracious host families.

Jessica Reid, a dedicated 4-H Educator and inbound assistant for the 4-H Exchange program, shares her profound insights into the signi cance of international exchange. Drawing from her own experiences living and teaching in Japan, she emphasizes the incredible bene ts gained from immersing oneself in a di erent

Reid says “ e State’s 4-H program is a great opportunity for families to experience another culture while opening their homes to a youth from Japan. We are always looking for more host families for not only the summer program, but for our year-long program as well. Some families may be worried they may not be a suitable host or be able to provide a good experience for a Japanese delegate because both parents work full-time, host siblings go to summer camp, or the family doesn’t travel during the summer, etc., but that couldn’t be further from the truth! e Japanese delegates want to experience daily life, whatever that means for your family. I encourage anyone interested in learning more about a new culture to apply to host a student next year!”

Dog’s Food Guarding Aggression Is Getting Worse

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted an energetic, bouncy little Terrier mix a few months ago from a friend who had found him abandoned and wandering near his farm. Eddie is around 1 year old, and according to the vet he was likely abused or in a puppy mill situation. He’s now caught up on his shots, neutered, has put on weight and is pretty happy. However, he is an absolute terror if anyone, including me, approaches him while he’s eating. He snarls and snaps. And he’s gotten worse. He even nipped my hand once, and ran o in fear when I yelled. How can I stop this behavior? -- Jack H. in Newton, Massachusetts

DEAR JACK: Resource guarding is certainly an undesirable behavior, and it is sadly a common one in dogs coming from stressful, overpopulated or abusive situations. Because Eddie is really aggressive, even toward you, consider contacting a professional trainer and working with the vet to develop a long-term solution. Training along with a prescribed anti-anxiety medicine can work wonders, but it will take time.

In the short term, you’ll need to make sure Eddie won’t bite you or anyone else. Feed him in a location away from foot tra c and other pets. If you use a kennel cage, you can feed him in the cage. Feed him at consistent times each day. Don’t let anyone else attempt to feed him, even with treats.

However, they also recommend working with a trainer. Resolving a resource guarding behavior can be tricky, but the long-term bene t is a happy, healthy companion.

EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF LABOR DAY

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime fun and a day when thousands of people gather across the country for their final big barbecue blowouts. Labor Day has evolved into a holiday about relaxing with friends and family, and that has led to its origins getting somewhat lost in the celebratory shuffle.

Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day was established to highlight the achievements of American workers, both from a social and an economic perspective. Labor Day highlights one of the main benefitsofbeingacitizenoftheUnitedStates,theabilitytohaveprofessional freedom and contribute to the prosperity and strength of the country through gainful employment. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894.

Celebrated annually on the first Monday of September, it is believed that Labor Day was first promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which also organized the first labor-related parade in New York City. Although the true fathers of Labor Day remain a topic of debate, some historians maintain that Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor put forward the first Labor Day proposal in May 1882 after witnessing a labor festival in Toronto, Canada.

Labor Day was largely celebrated in the past with parades, speeches and a day off of work for the country’s workers. Similar festivities occur to this day, with the gradual introduction of other events that mark the unofficial end of summer.

Watermelons provide cooling, juicy refreshment during the warm days of summer. But while they’re most associated with summer, watermelons can typically be found in grocery stores yearround. Watermelons are members of the cucurbitaceae family, which includes other gourds, such as pumpkin, squash and cucumber. Watermelons can be considered a fruit or a vegetable. In some areas of the world, watermelons are considered a fruit used primarily in snacks and desserts. In Russia, watermelon rind is pickled, while some Asian countries stir-fry or stew watermelons. To quench one’s curiosity about watermelons, the following are six facts about this beloved food, courtesy of The Watermelon Board.

1. Washing watermelons before cutting into them will help prevent the transfer of any dirt or bacteria into the fleshy center.

2. An average 15- to 20-pound watermelon offers 90 6-ounce servings.

3. Watermelons grow in warm climates and are harvested from Florida to Guatemala. Residents of the United States who want to enjoy domestically grown watermelons should look for them in June, July and August.

4. Seedless watermelons contain small, white “seeds.” These are actually seed coats that didn’t fully form. Crossing watermelons that are a diploid plant (having two sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (having four sets of chromosomes) will form a fruit with a triploid seed three sets of chromosomes). It’s the triploid that produces seedless watermelons.

5. Whole watermelons do not necessarily need to be refrigerated. But once cut, any remaining pieces should be refrigerated.

6. Watermelons are 92 percent water, and they’re the perfect carrying case for beverages. Early explorers even used watermelons as canteens.
