THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “Today’s accomplishments were yesterday’s impossibilities.” -- Rev. Robert H. Schuller HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS

Classifieds ____________________29

Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles.

Penelope Penelope is in the care of Ferals and Kittens and Cats Oh My. She was found wandering the Rochester city streets looking for food and found her way to one of my colonies. She is a beautiful, petite, 8 month old Tortoiseshell; very playful and gets along well with other cats. She would do best in a quiet home with NO dogs and with children over the age of 10. She is spayed, vaccinated, FeLV/FIV negative, treated for worms and fleas. Her adoption fee is $100.00. If you would like to adopt Penelope please complete an online Cat Adoption Form at our website or email us.

feralsandkittensandcatsohmy.org • carolsferalsny@gmail.com Ferals and Kittens and Cats Oh My is a 501c3 charitable organization. I am mainly a colony caretaker to over 22+ colonies in the city of Rochester. I rescue friendly/abandoned cats and kittens from the streets and find homes for them.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Take a good look at Disney princesses and you’ll notice that they’re all essentially attired in typical princess garb of gown, tiara, etc. But here’s a small difference you might not have picked up on -- some wear gloves, and some don’t. What’s up with that? The ladies without gloves are commoners who married into royalty.

Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be. The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive transition from elementary school. Page 10

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

(NAPSI)—The lives of nearly 733,000 cats and dogs could be saved with the help of caring humans and an innovative Web-based platform introduced this week by Best Friends Animal Society. Envisioned as a tool to help animal lovers help their communities save more pets, the new community lifesaving dashboard combines groundbreaking data visualization technology with the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published.

By Fifi Rodriguez 1. TELEVISION: What is Yogi Bear’s home in the animated “The Yogi Bear Show”?

Two years in the making, the tool crowdsources, validates and translates complex data about the dogs and cats in U.S. shelters.

2. GAMES: How many answers are possible in the Magic 8-Ball game?

It brings an unprecedented level of transparency to the animal welfare movement, unlocking new opportunities for saving pets by providing a detailed picture showing precisely—on a city, state and community level—where cats and dogs need to be saved.

4. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: What is a penny mostly made of?

For the first time, anyone with a smartphone or computer will be able to easily access his or her community’s snapshot of how many cats and dogs need to be saved and find tools to help individual shelters save more pets. The organization used independent research, government data and even FOIA requests to create the most comprehensive data set on animal welfare ever published. Best Friends CEO Julie Castle says the investment in data was necessary to achieve the organization’s goal of bringing the whole country no-kill by 2025.

Surgery Is Valid Option for Severe Sleep Apnea

Safeguard yourself from summertime ailments and accidents Insect bites and stings: Insects return when temperatures rise. Mosquitoes may be the biggest nuisance, but biting flies and wasps also make formidable foes. Use insect repellent to keep the bugs away. Wear long pants and check for ticks after hiking.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, who is 30 years old, was recently diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and currently uses a CPAP machine. He says does not want to use this for the rest of his life, therefore, he has researched surgery to correct his OSA. Recently he consulted with a sleep expert, and now has surgery scheduled with that doctor. My son will have a septoplasty and a palate expansion before a more radical surgery in a year called MMA. My son feels that these surgeries will give him the longest lasting cure for his OSA. I am very concerned about all of these surgeries. I value your objective opinion and hope you can give me some reassurance that these surgeries are worth the pain. -- G.M. ANSWER: Although CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure, which works by using air to keep the airway open) is the usual treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, surgery is another effective way to treat OSA. Surgery is most appropriate for those who wish a surgical solution (some people can’t stand the CPAP machine), those who have a surgically correctable problem (see below), and those who are good candidates for surgery; younger age makes surgery seem more reasonable to me. The specific surgery chosen depends on an individual’s unique anatomy. Surgery on the uvula (yes, the dangling thing at the back of the throat), soft palate and pharynx is the most common surgery, but maxillomandibular advancement surgery (MMA) has been shown to be successful in several well-known medical centers in the U.S., such as Mayo Clinic and Stanford. Success rates are high, and some studies have shown surgical cure of obstructive sleep apnea in over half of those who undergo the procedure. Not knowing your son and not being a surgeon, I can’t give an objective opinion for him in particular, but I can say that in appropriate patients, surgical treatment of OSA is reasonable. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SAFE WAYS TO DEAL WITH SINUS PRESSURE Sinuses are bony, hollow, air-filled cavities inside the face and skull. They are located in the low-center of the forehead, behind the eyes and in bones behind the nose. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says the sinuses lighten the skull and produce a mucus that moisturizes the inside of the nose. Unfortunately, when colds or the flu strike, sinuses may become one of the first spots affected by these illnesses. When the sinuses are working properly, mucus will drain into the nasal passages or out the back of the throat. Most of this drainage goes unnoticed. However, the American Sinus Institute says that factors such as allergies, illness, weather changes, dehydration, and dry air can make the sinus mucus thicker and drainage more difficult. This is when problems like infection, stuffiness or throat irritation may occur. In order to combat sinus congestion and drainage concerns, people may try certain strategies that include flushing the sinuses and thinning the mucus. It is imperative to use safe flushing methods to keep the sinuses healthy. Neti pots are among the more popular methods to flushing sinuses. These small teapot-like devices with elongated snouts have become a fixture in many medicine cabinets. Because they are drug-free alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba. The key to preventing infection is to only use previously boiled, sterile or distilled water to irrigate. Tap water is not adequately filtered, says the FDA, and may contain low levels of organisms that can stay alive in nasal passages and potentially cause serious infections. Those who are concerned about nasal irrigation safety may be wise to skip neti pots and use pre-packaged, sterile saline solutions that are bottled for the purpose of alleviating congestion. However, when prepared water is used in a clean neti pot or other device, these methods can be perfectly safe. Sinuses can get clogged for many reasons. To free up breathing, people are urged to consult their physicians to learn more about how to safely irrigate their nasal passages.

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision. Protecting Honeybees Provide clean sources of water. A small garden feature or a rainwater collection is enough to provide bees with a drink when needed. SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Get to Know Terri Bennett, Director of Webster Public Library BY DP DUNN

T

erri, tell us about your professional background, and involvement with the Webster Public Library (WPL).

I have been a professional librarian for 42 years (this month!) I’ve been blessed to have had an eclectic career working with various age levels, behind the scenes in administration and automation, and I was the Director of the Greece Public Library prior to coming to Webster. I’ve been the Director here in Webster for the past 16 years. The WPL is a tremendous resource for Webster. How do you view WPL’s role in the community? I like to say that we are the community’s living room – a place neighbors can gather, attend programs, pick out materials to read, view or listen to. We provide resources to help you find employment, switch careers or research your family tree. We work hard to ensure our building is a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone to enjoy. Tell us about your staff - they are always smiling, friendly and professional. You must be very proud of them. Indeed! They continue to be a source of inspiration with their positive attitudes and creativity. We support each other personally, and I think that translates into great customer service. We love our community and our role in making Webster a place “where life is worth living.” During the pandemic, all member libraries of the Monroe County Library System were closed, including WPL. It was a tremendous loss, albeit temporary, to the community. What lessons did you and your staff learn from that experience? We learned how valuable we are to this community - and loved! We were shocked but gratified at the outpouring of emotion when we re-opened. One service we had started prior to the pandemic was curbside pickup, which we continue even now. The community really appreciates the ability to stay in their car whether due to the pandemic or inclement weather. For a lot of our community, we are part of their daily routine. New events are always happening at the Webster branch. Tell us some upcoming events? This is the fun part of the job – looking for creative ways to engage with our community. We have hosted events like a Harry Potter night. Currently, we have a life-size Candy Land game in the story room, and we’ve done scavenger hunts in our local parks. We have just instituted “Binge Bags” which are a series of 4 DVDs with a theme and a bag of popcorn – perfect for a long weekend! The Friends of WPL do some wonderful things; please tell us about the Friends and their work? A more dedicated group of volunteers you will not find – these hard-working people devote time and energy to making our library the best it can be. Pre-pandemic, they raised close to $50,000 annually for us mainly through the book sales and lobby book sale in the library proper. These funds support projects and materials not covered by the library’s budget. All our programs are paid for by the Friends group: children’s and teen programs, and most notably our Zoom programs for adults. Additionally, they have paid for the cloth book bags, an automated wheelchair, and our one-of-a-kind seed library among other valuable assets. Tell us about your favorite interactions with patrons. Our most favorite interactions are with children – they love coming here, not only for story times but also for the vast collections that are available to them. What do you wish more people knew about the libraries, librarians, and the Webster branch specifically?

collections, a seed library, experience kits, mood enhancing lights, portable CD players, comic books, magazines, etc., etc. The Webster Library Foundation has an endowment fund that we try to grow each year through our fundraising campaign. The Foundation allows staff to propose interesting, creative projects that we could not ordinarily fund through our operating budget. I wish people knew about all the valuable resources we have available to them: Consumer Terri Bennett, Reports online, video games Webster Public Library Director to borrow, books on CD, Ancestry.com, yearbooks from the Webster schools back to the beginning, Kindles with the latest bestsellers, Empire passes which provide free entry into State parks, CD players, WiFi hotspot units, etc., etc. Libraries and librarians are here to help – we may not know all the answers but can certainly get you started. Never hesitate to ask!

I wish people knew about all the valuable resources we have available to them!

What changes, projects, plans and improvements do you foresee in the Webster Public Library in the next 1824 months? The biggest change will be the change in leadership – I’m retiring in the next few months. The Board of Trustees is tasked with finding my replacement and has begun that process. This is an exciting time for my successor as the staff and Board continue working on its longrange plan. The lease on the current building is up in 12 years so a decision will need to be made on our future in the coming years.

PAW’S CORNER

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

By Sam Mazzotta

Help! My Cats Have Started Fighting DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My two cats, Mitsy and Bitsy, got along well for nearly five years. Bitsy is 11 years old, about six years older than Mitsy. In the past couple of months, they squall and squabble with each other every time they’re in the same room. What is going on, and how do I stop it? -- Cara C., Albuquerque, New Mexico DEAR CARA: Take both of your cats to the veterinarian as soon as an appointment is available. Because the behavior just recently started after years of tranquility, a health issue could be at the root of their fighting. Senior cats are especially likely to develop conditions that cause them to be cranky or more territorial than usual. Pain from arthritis or other conditions can be a big factor in making Bitsy irritable, tired and just not in the mood to hang out with Mitsy. Likewise, Mitsy could be developing a medical condition; it’s best to rule out physical problems in both cats. Once their health has been assessed and treatment, if necessary, started, then the hard work of reconciling the two can begin. Keep the cats separated at first -- on opposite sides of the house, if possible, in closed rooms. Each day, reintroduce them by placing a small plate of food in front of each door and letting them out. If they calmly eat, then the next day, move both plates closer. Observe the cats as they eat; if they begin to growl or tense up, put both back into their rooms before they escalate -- fighting is very traumatic for them. Shift the bowls back a bit and try again. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT The Store Will Be Closed Friday, Sept. 17th and Saturday, Sept. 18th.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * For a little extra visibility in the basement, try applying glow-inthe-dark or reflective tape on the edges of the stairs. * This tip will change your life when peeling eggs: After you have hard-boiled your eggs, drain and submerge in ice water. Put them back in the pot, put the lid on and shake. Shake in all directions for up to a minute. The eggs practically slip right out of their shells. Just rinse and prep. -- JoAnn * “To distinguish your keys, especially house keys that have similar stamps, simply paint the key head with different colors of nail polish. You could even add a very subtle dot of the matching polish on the key lock. Reapply as needed.” -- S.L. in Oregon

* If you keep birds, here’s a reminder: Never preheat pans on high heat -- especially nonstick pans. They can let off a chemical that you or I cannot detect but can be a health hazard if your bird friend is in the kitchen area. Don’t keep birds in the kitchen when cooking. * “To mark the end on a roll of tape, save your bread tabs. Stick one on the tape end and it will be ready and easy to start the next time. If it’s a thick tape, you can use two clips -- one at either side of the tape. This way, it won’t split on you.” -- M.E. in Maryland * Use a flat iron to iron your collar if it’s rumpled. This also works to straighten out buttonholes that have crimped.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings. Page 20

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Listen Up: Engage Your Brain With Podcasts Have you ever listened to a podcast? A podcast is a digital audio or video file that you can access from the internet. They’re often in a series that you can tune into one at a time, almost like radio on demand. They’re usually associated with a website where you can find out what’s available and a schedule for new ones. You can listen or watch on your computer, phone or tablet, but you’ll need an app (application) if you want to download and take it with you, unless your phone has one pre-installed. One way to find entertaining podcasts is to plug one of your areas of interest into a web browser and add “podcast” to see what comes up. Or as a place to start, look at AARP’s website (www.aarp.org/ podcasts) and see what it offers. Right now, there are podcasts about various scams, protecting your finances and high prescription-drug prices, all worth a listen. Scroll to the bottom of the page for instructions. If you search the internet for podcasts, you’ll find vintage radio programs, celebrities, financial information, stories from history, news, brain stretchers, sports themes, stress reduction and so much more. There must be hundreds of thousands of podcasts out there to choose from. Try a search for “podcasts for seniors” to see what surprises pop up. Another way to keep your brain stretched is with online classes, called MOOCs, which stands for massive open online courses. There are thousands you can audit for free, attending remotely without ever leaving home. You don’t receive credit for audited classes. Coursera (www.coursera.org) is your go-to source for online learning. (At this writing, it lists 1,782 free courses from 200 universities.) Or see Edx (www.edx.org), co-founded by Harvard and MIT, for information on their 3,000 classes to audit for free. For more listings, see MOOCs at www.mooc.org. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

S E V RA Our Deepest Gratitude On behalf of the team of people who put on the second annual chicken BBQ for the Trevor Irby Memorial Scholarship, we would like to thank you for your support. The amount of love and generosity from everyone surrounding the fundraiser filled our hearts during such a challenging time. Thanks to the success of the BBQ and all the giving donations, we were able to make a generous contribution towards the Trevor Irby Memorial scholarship. This is a cause that is very near to our hearts. During such trying times in our personal lives and in current events, it is difficult to remember that there is still so much love and compassion in the world. Thank you for helping to make this day so positive, for all the generosity towards the scholarship, and for showing such compassion and grace. You are appreciated. A special thank you to the Stewart family, a constant support and pioneer of this fundraiser. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Aguirre, Faith Gates, and Paul Teed for making all this possible. - The Warner Family Kindness to a stranger On August 27th from 10:30PM to 3:30AM, I was waiting to be taken care of at UMMC Emergency Room for injuries sustained due to a fall. A young mom with a sick two-year-old boy was also waiting to see a doctor. Having left my home in a hurry, I didn’t have any cash with me, and they didn’t allow my wife to wait with me. Using hand signals, I asked the woman to please get me a bottle of pop, and she got me a root beer. In the excitement, I neglected to make arrangements to pay her back. I would like to pay her back and let her know how much I appreciated her kindness in helping a thirsty 88-year-old man caught without any cash.

Another natural area lost Construction has started on a new low-price store in Hemlock even though there are 2 other stores of the same name within 6 miles. At the site, there was a field full of flowers that attracted many butterflies and bees and a nice little pond alive with turtles, frogs and dragonflies. Then one day, the bulldozers cleared the field, ripped down trees and filled the pond, snuffing out all life. What an absolute shame! When are we going to stop destroying our natural areas for the sake of convenience, cheap goods, profit, and a few low-paying jobs? Demand Social Security changes Those who work and have Social Security deducted should be outraged that the government uses our money for their “slush funds.” It’s our money to be used when we are retired, disabled or for family hardships. Why aren’t taxpayers demanding our Representatives manage S.S. money as it was intended? Don’t forget, they work for us, and if they aren’t representing us, they should be voted out. This abuse has been going on for many years, but still they “pickpocket” our money without taxpayer permission. Everybody should be contacting their representatives from the bottom to the top. With computers, it is easy to contact our representatives. No more rocks Why are we painting trite messages on rocks (“be kind”) and then leaving them around on the ground outside? I don’t like it. Leave the rocks alone.

WHAT SCHOOLS ARE DOING ABOUT CHILDHOOD OBESITY Modifying school lunch offerings: Schools are taking inventory of not only the foods they offer on lunch menus, but also the feel of the cafeteria so that healthy eating is encouraged. This may include removing vending machines that contain unhealthy snacks or providing a greater array of offerings that include fresh fruits, whole grains and lean protein sources. Some schools also are investing in components, such as salad bars, to store, prepare and display healthy foods.
