CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.
TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD
Thedawnofanewyearrepresents a chance to start anew and set goals for the months ahead. New Year’s resolutions are often made to provide the motivation people need to improve their lives and make a new year as productive and happy as possible.
While people who make New Year’s resolutions fully intend to realize those goals, few actually stick to the game plan. According to researchers at the University of Scranton, just 8 percent of people who make their New Year’s resolutions actually achieve those resolutions. While that might make it seem like the odds are against men and women who have resolved to improve their lives in the year ahead, adults can realize their goals for the new year and beyond.

Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS
(NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children.
One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education.
TheGovernor’sSchoolalsoservesasaresourcetoallteachersandstudents in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools.
The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students.
This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the communityandinnovativeapproachtoartseducationandskillsdevelopment with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts

Many people make losing weight and/or getting fit their New Year’s resolutions, and the dawn of a new calendar year is often a great time to find discounts on gym memberships. According to Consumer Reports, many gyms and fitness centers, recognizing the desire people have to start the year off on a healthy foot, will greatly discount the cost of memberships in January. But signing up for a discounted gym membership on the morning of January 1 is not the only way to save money and still get fit. Prospective members willing to committo12-monthmemberships may be able to get a gym with costly initiation fees to waive that fee. In addition, e-commerce businesses like Groupon® and LivingSocial may also offer discounted memberships to area gyms through their websites. Fitness-minded people may also be eligible for health club rebates through their health insurance plans. In such instances, health insurance providers may reward policy holders who visit the gym a predeterminednumberoftimesin aspecifictimeframe(i.e.,50visits in six months) with rebates. Such rebates can save club members several hundred dollars per year, greatly reducing the overall cost of their gym memberships.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* If your straw broom isn’t working as well as it did when new, try giving it a spruce-up. Beat any dust out of the ends, then trim off any bent straws. Trim a section from a leg of stretched out pantyhose or tights and wrap it around the bristles, about two inches up from the bottom. This keeps the bristles nice and tight, and it will collect dirt better.
* When you replace old brushes -hairbrushes or toothbrushes -- wrap a length of masking tape around the handle. That way you can use them for cleaning purposes, and they will never be mistakenly used for the wrong purpose.
* “When cooking rice, add a little bit of lemon juice to the water. It does not really flavor it, but it will keep it nice and white, plus it seems to be a bit fluffier when I do this.”
-- R.E. in Mississippi
* “When my child was mostly finished potty training, I put her baby potty in the car with some wet wipes and plastic baggies. Seems like she had emergencies when we were driving, and it wasn’t always convenient to find a business with a bathroom in time. But it was easy to pull into a parking lot and let her take care of business.”
-- E.E. in Maine
* Store extra plastic grocery bags in empty tissue boxes. They are easy to store this way, and you can keep them under the sink or in the car for easy access.
* “Keep your garage floor nice by lining the area where you park with carpet remnants. Road salt and other nasty business that your tires pick up will not corrode the floor. You can shake out the rugs outside.”
-- C.Y. in New York
PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
Do Cats Really Need Potty Training?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read with interest your recent column about cats using shop towels rather than kitty litter to do their business. How did their owner manage to train the cats to use the towels and switch from litter? And why not just let a cat do its business outside?
-- Caroline D., Winchester, Virginia
DEAR CAROLINE: Compared with dogs, cats are usually easy to potty train (or litter train) because they have very speci c potty behaviors. Cats instinctively bury their poop to hide their scent from potential predators -- hence the use of cat litter, which also absorbs urine well and masks the scent for a few days.
I’m not sure how the reader did it, but one way to switch a cat from litter box to a pad is to place the new pad and tray next to the old litter box so that a cat can sni around it, check it out and become familiar with it. A er a day or two, remove the litter box and put the pad in its place. Many cats will get the message right away. Others might hunt around for their box; if you notice this, place them gently on the pad to help them make the connection.
I’m not a big fan of letting indoor cats go outside to do their business. ey’ll o en head straight for the nearest ower bed, leaving a surprise that I’m personally not thrilled about. ey also are at risk in the outdoors, from coyotes, turkeys (yes, turkeys in the Northeast), cars and other cats. It’s better to provide a safe spot indoors with a clean litter box.

SENIOR NEWS
By Matilda Charles
Goals for 2023
I didn’t rush to create my goals for 2023, but the time has come ...
One year ago I made two goals: to buy weekly food donation cards at the grocery store to give to the food bank and to continue to pick up weekly groceries for three elderly neighbors. I made it three-quarters of the year on both of those.
Food prices just got too high for me to continue to buy a donation card each week. And picking up groceries for the three elderly ladies was no longer necessary once I introduced them to the food bank. Now I have new goals for 2023.
I’m going to continue with “Growing Stronger,” the free 126-page strength-training book for seniors on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website (cdc.gov). I’ve reprinted new, blank pages for the charts, such as Long-Term Personal Goals and How Fit and Strong Are You Now? I’m just about ready to buy a pair of slightly heavier hand weights. If you decide to start the “Growing Stronger” strength program, ask your doctor rst if it’s appropriate for you. And remember: Start slowly, with low weights.
In the tech category, my goal is to successfully set up a personal WiFi hotspot. (A hotspot is letting your phone’s cellular service serve as Wi-Fi.) is desire comes a er a day with no power during a storm. No power meant no computer, but I did have cellphone service. Had I been able to set up a hotspot, I would have been able to access the internet on my tablet. If you decide to try this, be mindful of security.
As a nal goal for the year, I’m going to have a banana each and every day. Whether it’s sliced over cereal or put in a smoothie, I’ll get my ber, magnesium, potassium and vitamins B6 and C ... like it or not.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD
Expect setbacks. If realizing resolutions was easy, the success rate would be greater than 8 percent. Setbacks are inevitable, so don’t allow them to derail your efforts. Even if setbacks occur when you’re well on your way to success, regroup and get back on track without getting down on yourself.

TIPS FOR TAKING STUNNING NATURE PHOTOS
Consider depth of field. Sometimesyouwillhavenocontroloverthebusybackground an interesting subject is in front of in a planned photograph. A shallow depth of field achieved with a wide aperture can blur a background and separate the subject from that background, according to Shotkit, a photography and gear authority. Some postproduction work also can be done to blur backgrounds in apps like Lightroom or through Photoshop.

Thank you for paying for our drinks and donuts! Thank you to the young lady in the white SUV who paid for our order at DD in Batavia! It's funny because my husband and I were talking about paying for the people behind us and so we did! Thanks again, it’s greatly appreciated!
KUDOS, Ms.Savage
I read in a recent education newsletter that Ms. Valerie Savage, from the Wheatland-Chili Central School District, was named 2022 New York State Art Teacher of the Year! What an honor when you consider that this is considered a small school district when compared to all the school districts in the state. As a former educator and resident of Wheatland, I am so proud and happy for her recognition! Keep up the great works!
David Thomas,
Thank you!

I would like to thank all who helped us at Lima Manor during the wind storm on December 23rd. We were without heat and lights for 24 hours. The Lima Fire Dept. came to take anyone who wanted to go to the warming room at the fire station where breakfast and lunch were served. Some of us stayed in our apartments, and the food was brought to us. Thank you to all the helpers.

Move over
Slower traffic “stay right” doesn’t mean only on Thruways. Every day on divided 4 lane roads you have those who drive in the left lane oblivious to others. Every weekday around 3pm I see the same school bus doing 45 in a 55 zone in the left lane. I’m not exaggerating. Roughly 7 miles between towns. Cars and trucks get congested while trying to get past him. Some beep horns and make hand gestures, yet he refuses to move over. Yes, it does create possible road rage and safety issues. Move over!
Sky High Airline Profits
The airlines do not give refunds on unused tickets, involuntarily downgrade seats with no refunds, received $50 billion of taxpayer $ during Covid, and are now posting record quarter profits. How does the airline industry get away with these tactics? No other companies can refuse to give refunds and receive that much in government aid.
Regarding the Dec. 30th “Inconsiderate Deer Hunters” Rant.
Please don’t group all hunters as being inconsiderate. I do tons of hiking, both on local trails and St. Regis Wildness Area up north. I have seen lots of wrappers, trash, dog and horse “waste”, etc... Should I group all hikers as inconsiderate? Also, some of these trails have signs saying no horses, but there is the manure (evidence). What about ATV riders that are not supposed to be on these trails? Are all of them bad? Wildlife have it tougher than us, they eat wherever they can find their next meal, whatever it is. Overall I agree with you that gut piles/carcasses are unsightly and unpleasant, so is unnatural trash, dog and horse manure left by hikers. Let’s agree not to “group” various users all as guilty as all groups have some bad apples (not that apples are bad).

RANTS
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Immunological Therapy Reasonable for Case of Lymphoma
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with stage 3A follicular lymphoma. It was discovered on a CAT scan when I went to the ER for diverticulitis. I have no symptoms. The doctor did a biopsy to confirm, and I had a PET scan as well. I feel good otherwise. I am only on blood pressure and cholesterol medications. My oncologist is recommending low-dose chemotherapy. I am conflicted. At my age, what should I do? -- L.H. ANSWER: There are many types of lymphomas (which are a type of cancer of blood cells), but lymphomas are predominantly in the lymph nodes. Follicular lymphoma is an “indolent” type of lymphoma, meaning it is very slow-growing, but unfortunately often uncurable. People with no symptoms from follicular lymphoma and who are stage 1, 2 or 3A tend to have a long time before they have progression of the disease to the point of having symptoms. Depending on other characteristics, that time ranges from three to seven years. Choosing to hold off on treatment is definitely a reasonable option for a person in your situation. However, your oncologist knows much more about your disease than I do, such as the extent of tumor in the abdomen, the molecular markers of the tumor, and additional blood results. When an oncologist suggests treatment, I would listen carefully. One treatment that your oncologist might be considering is immunological therapy such as rituximab. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, rituximab alone is pretty nontoxic and can delay the progression of the disease. A large study suggested improvement in the quality of life with rituximab. Usually, rituximab is given once a week for four doses, but some oncologists repeat the four doses every two months. If I had a patient in your situation, I would say holding off on treatment would be reasonable given your age and lack of symptoms, but a trial of the rituximab (if that is what the oncologist is contemplating) would also be a reasonable choice. If you had serious side effects to the treatment, I would recommend against further doses.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS
RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills.
FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.
EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
Trouble finding the right words. Finding words to converse freely can be difficult for people with Alzheimer’s. Such individuals may experience particular difficulty finding the right words to express their thoughts or identify objects.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS
Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.
Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores.
Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry.
Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key.
Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE
Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.
