Hyper, Yelping Terrier Is Handful During Walks
will be celebrating his homecoming on June 15th. I adopted him when he was 7 weeks old and weighed less than 1 lb. He weighs 5 lbs. now.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A have a wiry little terrier named “Chip” who is well-behaved inside. However, when it’s time for his daily walk, he begins barking nonstop by the door. When I take him outside on the leash, he keeps barking, and pulls hard on the leash. So much so that he almost hurts himself when the collar digs into his neck. Then he’ll yelp, as if I had hurt him. It’s embarrassing to walk with this hyper, yelping little dog. How can I get him to calm down? -- Charity G., Albany, New York

DEAR CHARITY: An energetic dog can be frustrating to handle, but don’t lose hope. You can work with Chip to improve his behavior. First, order Chip a properly sized halter online, and use this on walks. A halter will spread out the contact points across the stronger parts of his little body. This will prevent injury when Chip pulls against the leash. Halters also are much more comfortable; the uncomfortable collar may be stressing him out. I’d like you to look up a dog trainer in your area who specializes in small dogs, who can be little tornados on a good day. Many trainers are adapting their lessons to an online format, so you can meet with them at home over a conferencing app like Zoom or Google Meet. While you’re waiting for that first session, start working on reinforcing Chip’s basic behavioral training. Work with him at home on the commands “come,” “sit,” “stay” and “lie down.” During walks, work with him on “heel,” “sit” and “stay.” These training sessions also will help Chip work off some of that energy, and he’ll be thrilled with all the attention he’s getting, too.

TURN YOUR HOME INTO THE ULTIMATE
Staycation Destination While vacations sound like the best chance to unwind, planning a trip out of town -- and getting there – can sometimes be more hassle than it’s worth. Here’s how to turn your home into a staycation “destination” that can be enjoyed any time you feel like it:
Upgrade Bedding: Give your bedroom
a five-star hotel-grade makeover so you can enjoy that quality of rest found only on vacation. Shop for percale linens and high-quality pillows and invest in window treatments that block out sound and light, so you can awaken when you choose to, not when the sun or neighbors intervene.
Create a Spa-Like Bathroom: Find your
bliss by creating a spa-like retreat in your bathroom. Start by clearing unsightly clutter and using coordinating dispensers for bath products. Paint the walls in a hue that promotes relaxation -- think earthy tones, blues and greens, then add plants or fresh flowers for a pop of vibrant color. Dimmer switches, waterproof speakers and a waterfall showerhead with different spray settings are just a few updates offering you flexibility to create different moods, all which can connect to a smart home device that remembers your preferences. For that warm, cozy feeling right out of the bath or shower, add in-floor heating and a towel warming drawer.
Add Backyard Touches: Show your
backyard some love with a little landscaping and a few touches that replicate that vacation feel. An outdoor bar and kitchen can give you a dedicated place to wine and dine without having to constantly go in and out of the house. Install a hammock for long afternoons spent with a book.
Explore Financing Options: When it
comes to transforming your home into the ultimate destination, you won’t want to cut corners on what matters most to you, whether that’s opting for the superior flat screen TV or getting just the right coffee table to complete the look of your living room. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

To that end, check out easy and convenient financing options that offer buying empowerment and flexibility. In some cases, you can take advantage of even longerterm promotional financing offers, ranging from 12 to 60 months. Being able to pay off home purchases with convenient monthly payments can make life easier, helping you manage cash flow and compartmentalize spending on all things home. Make “getting away from it all” as simple as taking a bath or enjoying a blockbuster from the comfort of home. With smart renovation strategies, you can be sure you’re getting exactly what you want and need to truly relax. (StatePoint)

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Raynaud’s Patient: Can Viagra Help Cold Fingers ---
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have scleroderma with Raynaud’s phenomenon, and friends and family members have told me that I might get help from Viagra. Frankly, I hadn’t read or heard that from either my rheumatologists or dermatologists. I already tried a short course of nifedipine over a decade ago (it just gave me a headache), so I just stick with mechanical means to keep my hands warm in winter and, maybe surprisingly to some, in summer. Believe me, air-conditioned grocery stores are torture from April to October. -- M.A.P. ANSWER: Raynaud’s phenomenon is an excessive response of the blood vessels in the skin to changes in temperature, and sometimes to emotional stress. While most people will get cold hands and feet when it is cold, a person with Raynaud’s can get a drastic response, even to air conditioning or freezer sections of grocery stores. The skin will turn white and then blue, then quite red on being rewarmed. Not everybody goes through all three colors, however. Raynaud’s can exist by itself, but is often seen in the presence of autoimmune conditions, such as the systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) you have. Treatment for Raynaud’s is generally the same with or without other conditions. Everybody with Raynaud’s should quit smoking and avoid medications that can trigger an attack (over-the-counter cold and flu remedies are the most common). The mainstay of treatment is avoiding the temperature changes wherever possible, but as you point out clearly, it’s almost impossible to do so completely. Putting your hand in a refrigerator or holding a cold drink can trigger an attack. Many people with Raynaud’s learn to keep gloves with them all the time and dress their entire body warmly. An attack can sometimes be aborted by rubbing hands in warm water or getting them into a warm place. When medication treatment is necessary, a calcium channel blocker like nifedipine is often the first choice. Headache and dizziness can limit effectiveness of this treatment. Studies have shown these medications can cut the attacks by about 50%. Sildenafil (Viagra) has been used in people with Raynaud’s, and is about as effective as calcium channel blockers. However, for people with scleroderma, ulcers and Raynaud’s, sildenafil has been shown in small trials to be very effective.
Caring for you and the community since 2001.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

A Tradition For 70 Years!

Survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Phouang Ketavongsa; his children, Lani (Robert) Paxon, Jannene Ketavongsa, Noi (Chris) Souvanna, Souly Ketavongsa Jr.; his sister, Kolakhane Ketavongsa, his sister-in-law, Saysamone Kettavong, his 11 grandchildren and his grand furbaby, along with several nieces, and nephews, and friends.
STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.
Souly Ketavongsa was born in Sannahket in Southern Laos to the late Keua and Chanhtha Ketavongsa. As a young adult, Souly was a medic in the army fighting against the Communist Party in the 1970s. In 1978, he migrated to the United States of American through the Methodist Church sponsorship. With barely $3.00 in his pocket, he entered America and walked off the plane in his flip-flops and an enormous smile. His greatest ambition was to bring his siblings and their family in Laos to the United States. In 1980, Souly met his loving and devoted wife of forty years. Following their marriage, he and his bride built a family and filled their home with love. The father of five spent his entire life sacrificing and supporting his children and extended family, which included celebrating life milestones and anniversaries. Souly was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed hunting and fishing. In the fall, he appreciated scenic drives through the countryside of New York to view the changing color of the leaves. There are many things for which Souly will be remembered. To his colleagues he was a hardworking and industrious man. He was never afraid of getting his hands dirty and the first coworker to offer a helping hand. To his family Souly was an unassuming, easygoing, and a humble human being who was content with the simplest things in life. For the past few days, we all have despaired at our loss, however, the power of his love and the significance of his life afford us comfort and the strength to move forward and to honor his legacy. A funeral service took place on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at 1PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia. Interment will take place privately.

Happy New Year! 5 Pandemic Habits Worth Saving
2020
was an understatedly difficult year, and many of us were not sorry to see it go. The pandemic changed the way we work, the way we spend our leisure time, the way we connect with our loved ones and much more. While the majority will likely be happy to leave those changes behind, there are at least a handful of new habits worth holding on to.
#1: Spending more time with family The pandemic created a new era of “family togetherness” thanks to a variety of social distancing and COVID-19 prevention efforts including schools shutting down and parents working from home. While it is unfortunate that social activities, in school attendance, sporting events and other activities often had to be postponed, one silver lining has been the dramatic uptick in time spent together, spouse to spouse, parent to child. A wealth of fun ideas – including those on our Explore page – ranged from outdoor options to reading list to a variety of games; however, one of the most interesting and modern offers was virtual tours and trips. Anyone with internet access was all it took to enjoy a wide variety of virtual experiences from the comfort of one’s couch, including touring national parks, world famous museums, underwater dives, and much more. As things hopefully begin to return to “normal” this year, consider resisting the temptation to refill your schedule. Instead, continue 2020ís family time trend, and hopefully soon, visit in person some of the places you have explored virtually.
#2: Valuing extended family & friends Without question, one of the hardest parts of the pandemic has been being unable to spend time with all of our loved ones, particularly extended and elderly family members. Before the pandemic, how many of us took for granted that we could visit our loved ones whenever we wished? Suddenly, elderly relatives were quarantining in their homes or in nursing homes, unable to see visitors except across windowpanes. For those who faithfully visit family, this has been a painful adjustment. Sadly, the old adage, You never know what you have until it is gone, has seldom been more deeply felt. Hopefully, this time apart has given many of us a new appreciation for spending time with our extended and elderly family members and will visit them often when it is safe to do so.
#3: More time in the great outdoors As many avenues of recreation closed or became very limited, people found themselves heading outdoors. One of the only places that didn’t close were nature areas. Parks were usually open for hiking, recording a definite increase in visitors. Thankfully, the Genesee River Valley is blessed with several parks, trails, forests, wilderness areas, campgrounds, lakes, rivers, and creeks, making it perfect for outdoor recreation. Aside from the obvious health benefits during a pandemic, spending time outside in nature has a variety of everyday health benefits. Researchers have linked exposure to greenspace with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, preterm birth, stress, and high blood pressure. Additionally, time spent in nature can improve mood; increase one’s ability to focus, even among children diagnosed with ADHD; accelerate recovery from injury or illness; and improve sleep. With such holistic benefits, this is one habit that should definitely continue.

#4: Continued hand washing and sanitizing Incredibly simple, it is surprising how much the pandemic increased awareness and mindfulness regarding these simple habits. While sanitizing is a convenience many of us enjoy, handwashing is the real hero. In fact, the CDC notes that it is one of the best ways people can protect themselves and their families from getting sick. Interestingly, the CDC suggests that it is not particularly important whether the water is hot or cold or whether the soap is antibacterial or not (outside of professional health care settings). What is important is lather. Soap and water worked into a lather trap and remove germs and chemicals. When applied to hands before soap, water helps develop a better lather. A good lather forms pockets known as micelles that trap and remove germs, and scrubbing for at least 20 seconds helps ensure that no germs are left behind. Even as vaccinations fuel hopes of quelling this pandemic, more mindful handwashing habits – the proverbial ounce of prevention – are worth carrying forward.
#5: Positive community connections All across our readership area, many inspiring people reached out and joined together to support their neighbors, local businesses, and communities. Even while social distancing, working from home, and remaining physically apart, communities came together. They created online pages and websites to continue to order from local restaurants. They shared which businesses were open, had curbside pick-up available and more. They purchased gift cards for future use at independent businesses they love just to ensure they remained open. They also looked after each other. They went shopping for elderly neighbors. They reached out with food and free and low-cost meals for those in need, out of work, or faced with fewer hours. They connected on social media networks to encourage one another to be strong, made signs to encourage their communities, raised money for backpack programs, holiday programs, and simply let others know they were available if needed, showing incredible solidarity. This unity, support, and resurgence of respect for teachers, medical workers and other service professionals should by all means continue into the new year and beyond.

Thank you, kind sir Imagine my surprise! The man that I thought was the store manager or owner went to get me a product I needed that wasn’t on the shelf. When he got back to me with it, I thanked him and went to the store cashier to pay for it. The cashier told me the other man already paid for it. Come to find out, the man wasn’t the store manager or owner. He was another customer! I tried to go thank him, but he was long gone. Not only had he paid for it, but apparently, he went in his own car to another store to buy it! Wow! What great kindness to experience in the holiday season! Thank you, kind sir! I wish you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! - Signed, an Old Woman in Need
Delivery Drivers Move out of the way of faster, vehicles on the roads. You’re causing more harm than good by holding everybody up! Move over or find a different sightseeing route. Christmas trees Are you tired of overpaying for your Christmas tree? $50 for a 6-foot tree? That’s over $8 a foot. Are you kidding me? I hear for some places its more than that. Ridiculous! Thank you, sisters I want to thank my sisters in Christ for the “gifts” from the bottom of my heart. You brought tears to my eyes and emphasized what I’ve known all along. God is good. Thanks again. Peace & Happiness in the New Year to you all. Community Generosity The Gilbert family on North St. in Caledonia would like to give a massive thank you this Holiday Season. There were many factors this year that caused our family to struggle, and although we did the best we could, of course, it was still hard. Our community came together like nothing I have ever seen before in order to ensure we had an amazing Christmas. I would
accommodate a 6-7-foot tree. A tree that size should be no more than $45, especially if you were the one to saw it down. I’m a person that would never get a fake tree. I have always had real trees. So, if you think the Christmas tree, you’re buying is too expensive, don’t be too timid to say something about it. If you don’t, next year the same size tree will cost you more. Learn how to treat others You just have love people who don’t have one ounce of common decency who then boohoo about people not having any respect for anyone. They are rude and obnoxious. The only vocabulary they know only consists of fourletter words, added with gestures that really make them appear to have lost all of their marbles. They lack good manners, refinement, and grace. They are the epitome of uncouth. They then complain

like to thank Focus on the Children: you are such caring and hardworking people that go above and beyond for those in need. To everyone at Cooper Vision that bought gifts for a family (that you did not know) during a struggling world right now: I could never thank you enough. Also, to Joan Marie, the Angry Rooster, and everyone in Caledonia that assisted with the gifting tree: thank you! This is a Christmas we will never forget.
Kudos Livingston County Department of Health Hats off to the Livingston County Department of Health! On December 12th, the Health Department held a ‘drive thru COVID-19 test site,” which my husband and I attended. The system they established was efficient and successful and ran like a ‘well-oiled machine.’ Staff and all who worked the event were professional, pleasant, competent, and caring. Before we arrived back at our home, we received a call to report that our tests were negative! Thank you! -J & B
about how people have no respect for one another. Well, they need to respect others around them. Ever heard “practice what you preach?” They are very bad examples for young ones. They should be ashamed of themselves, but they don’t see that they are really hurting themselves in the long run. Please slow down Thanks go out to the Livingston County Highway Department for resurfacing our county road this summer. They did a great job, but it has now become somewhat of a speedway. It seems like everyone is in quite a hurry, and unfortunately, a few days ago, our beloved family cat was hit and killed near our home.... not saying that speed was a factor but it could have been. Please slow down on our country roads. Merry Christmas to all and hoping that 2021 will be a much better year for all of us.

No fan attendance Fans in the stands again, but there is a catch. Only about 7,000 fans will be allowed to attend the Bills playoff home game in a stadium that can hold about 68,000. This is actually insulting. No fans should attend the games until that stadium is full to capacity.
