A metal rake is for stones and dirt and shouldn’t be used for leaves. To get between bushes, a smaller version of a leaf rake, called a shrub rake, should be used.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Rake leaves as they start to fall more heavily. Once leaves begin to fall more heavily, rake them up and add them to compost piles. The resource GardeningKnowHow.com notes composting leaves creates a dark, rich and organic matter that can add nutrients to garden soil and loosen compacted earth. Leaving leaves on the lawn once they start to fall in great numbers makes it hard for grass blades to breathe, and the leaves can block moisture from reaching the soil, which needs water to maintain strong roots. In addition, potentially harmful pathogens can breed on damp leaves left on a lawn, and such bacteria can cause significant damage to the turf over time.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames. According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary. • Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily. • Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit. • Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment. • Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges. • Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ROOFING & SIDING
Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

MAKE FALL CLEAN-UP ECO-FRIENDLY
PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.
Compost is a friend Spread a thin layer of compost on the lawn and in garden beds. Compost prevents weed growth, insulates and protects the soil and provides nutrients that will be needed once the spring busy season begins. By using compost, homeowners can reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers and weed killers.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Now More Than Ever, Get Your Flu Shot A sincere wish just came true: This year's high-dose senior version of the flu shot will contain all four vaccines. In past years, the senior shot (for those over age 65) contained only three of the vaccines, two A and one B. Most years I would write a snarly note to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and ask about the reason for the false economy. Of course I never got a reply, but now ... finally, we seniors will have a flu shot with all four vaccines. And what a shot it will be. The four vaccines are names we haven't heard in a while, if ever: A/Guangdong-Maonan (H1N1), A/ Hong Kong (H3N2), B/Washington and B/Phuket. To help us kick start our immune system, the senior version will contain four times the amount that younger folks get. The standard trivalent (threeway) will have two A and one B, while the standard quadrivalent (four-way) has all four. If your doctor says you should have a flu shot, don't delay. When I called my pharmacy (where I get my flu shots each year), the first appointment was many days out, and they had been swamped with requests for the shot. Yes, they will be resupplied when they run out, but no, they didn't know how quickly that would be. By getting a flu shot, should you get sick later this season, it will be a good bet that it's not the regular flu, which will save much time in getting a diagnosis. To find flu shots, call your doctor, local pharmacies, grocery stores or go to vaccinefinder.org. If you have a Medicare or insurance card, you won't have to pay anything. If you want to know more, check the CDC website: www.cdc.gov/ flu/season/faq-flu-season-2020-2021.htm.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 5, 1892, the Dalton Gang attempts the simultaneous daylight robbery of two Coffeyville, Kansas, banks, but are surrounded by townspeople, who kill every gang member except for Emmett Dalton. Emmett was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Paroled after 14 years, he ended up as a screenwriter in Hollywood. * On Oct. 6, 1926, Yankee slugger Babe Ruth hits a record three home runs against the St. Louis Cardinals in the fourth game of the World Series. In 1928, in the fourth game of another Yanks-Cards World Series, he knocked three more pitches out of the same park. * On Oct. 10, 1985, the hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro ends when U.S. Navy F-14 fighters intercept an Egyptian airliner attempting to fly the Palestinian hijackers to freedom. On Oct. 7, heavily armed terrorists had hijacked the ship and 400 crewmembers and passengers.

Gift Auctions Can Successfully Raise Funds Gift auctions are a fun way to raise money for good causes. Organizing a gift auction requires a team of dedicated volunteers. * Enlist a team of gift-wrappers. Presentation may determine bids and increase those bids. Ask for donations of baskets and wrapping materials, such as ribbon and cellophane. Each prize can be wrapped in ways to entice bidders to bid high and bid often.

Diabetes Not Limited to Only 2 Main Types --DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, at 57, I was diagnosed with Type 1 LADA diabetes. Initially I was put on insulin to get my blood sugar within the normal range. Then I was just on metformin until the “honeymoon period” was over. My endocrinologist is great. I now am back on insulin (six units at night). I walk anywhere between 3 and 8 miles about three times a day. My blood pressure is excellent. I initially lost about 18 pounds after diagnosis, so my weight is good. When looking at Google, it says my life expectancy has been cut by 20 years! Yikes, I JUST retired and if I go by their gauge, I’ll be passing around age 68! Is this based on someone who has had diabetes for many years, since Type 1 is usually diagnosed much earlier? The doctor said even though my initial sugars were over 500 when diagnosed, I was very healthy and that’s why nothing was “destroyed.” My vision was off for about a month but no permanent damage was done. Any reassurance would be appreciated! -- M.W. ANSWER: Most people are familiar with Type 1 diabetes, with a typical onset in childhood and at a normal weight. It is caused by an autoimmune destruction of the insulin-making cells in the pancreas. People also know about Type 2 diabetes, usually adultonset and usually diagnosed in someone who’s overweight; it’s caused by resistance to insulin. But there are other subtypes of diabetes, including latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). In the U.S. and Canada, it accounts for a small fraction of diabetes cases, but is more common in Scandinavian countries. It has some characteristics of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, but the autoimmune nature and the usual progression to insulin need makes most experts feel it is closer to Type 1 than to Type 2. A recent paper has outlined a potential new classification of diabetes types. The change in life expectancy from diabetes relates to how long you have had diabetes and how well-controlled it has been. With outstanding diabetes control (normal or near-normal blood sugar levels), the effect on overall mortality is modest, at best. In one model, the reduction in life expectancy is less than a year. However, it certainly is possible to have life expectancy drop by 20 years with very poorly controlled, longstanding diabetes. For people with diabetes, to a very large extent, their potential to live longer (and healthier) can be improved by better blood sugar control. For new-onset autoimmune diabetes (both Type 1 and LADA), early and aggressive blood sugar control with insulin may reduce the amount of autoimmune damage and improve long-term prognosis. Studies are in progress to evaluate this. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female, 16 years old. My white blood cell count is 16.6. I am suffering from so much weakness and pain in my legs, arms and shoulder area. I also have a cough and cold. Is it dangerous? What should I do for it? -- K.C. ANSWER: I don’t have enough information to help much. A white blood cell count that high suggests an infection. At your age, those symptoms are most likely a viral infection, but acute mononucleosis and even pneumonia are possible, so you need to see your doctor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A VERY SUCCESSFUL 2020 SUMMER GAZEBO CONCERT SERIES! The Riga Recreation Department just concluded its very successful 2020 Summer Gazebo Concert Series at the Village of Churchville Gazebo. In the tine of this health crisis, we were able to provide the community with some muchneeded relief. Many, many thanks to the following organizations that made all of this possible in these times of uncertainty: NYS Senator Michael Ranzenhofer’s Office, the Town of Riga, the Village of Churchville, the Churchville Lion’s Club and the following musical performers: Curbside Pickup, Blue Sky, Johnny Bauer, 8 Days a Week,
and Generations. -DaveThomas, Riga Recreation Supervisor ABOVE AND BEYOND! I want to give a huge thank you to all delivery people for making sure my parcels and mail arrive. A special thank you goes to our local FedEx. I order from Chewy frequently, and some of the items are excessively heavy. I have a pet that has allergies, and I am finding it difficult right now finding unscented products along with special animal food in our local stores. FedEx has no idea why I order what I do, but I wanted to let them know that they do an excellent job, and I am very pleased with their work ethic. THANK YOU I would like to
thank all of the wonderful friends that have helped us through the passing of our son JP. Thank you to all who came to the wake as JP would have loved this. Also, thank you to all who have stopped by to give condolences, brought food, flowers and cards, and donations to GG’s future education and for checking on us. Thank you to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department for their help. We can’t get by without you. Thank you to Pastor Colin Pritchard for staying with Jessica the night JP passed away and for the wonderful words at the wake. We are so thankful for you coming. We feel blessed to know that JP was loved by so many. We miss you JP. Love ya all, Margo,
MUSIC A HUGE PROBLEM? Wow! You use such strong adjectives to describe people who post their views, words such as “attacked” and “ganging up” on the person who has a complaint about neighbor and their music. I read the post as did many others, I’m sure, and there was no such thing. You may not like or agree with the suggestions given, but that does not add up to ganging up on or attacking someone. It was just practical advice. It’s clear to see how someone’s playing music can become so distorted. I think the complaining neighbor has more problems than just the neighbor’s music playing. They seem to have such distaste for them it’s a shame. How sad. With all the woes in the world, it’s a pity to make such a big thing over music. How long has this been going on that, all of a
sudden, it is a huge problem? MUSIC TROUBLE So sorry about neighbor being bothered by loud music. How long have you been suffering? Are you the only neighbor having a problem with loud music so loud that it rattles your house? Maybe you should try to nicely explain to your neighbor how bothersome the music is to you? Have you given that a thought? Maybe do it over a cup of coffee? That always brings the tension down, just a few suggestions. Also, ear plugs can help somewhat. There are codes where you can’t play music late at night or too early in the morning. Don’t know if that is when the music is being played. It’s always good to get along with neighbors. Hopefully, you can get some much-needed relief. Kindness does go a long way. I have been blessed with
neighbors who are kind and considerate. RESPECT OTHERS WITH MUSIC The nature of character is not based on self-entitlement but of respect for other’s right to peace and quiet. This must be a consideration, especially when residing in close communities or apartment complexes. We should not have to suffer through someone else’s loud music or faulty exhaust systems, etc. Also, taste in music is variable. One person’s treasure is another person’s torment. Peace and quiet is not trivial. It is of precious value. Remember the quiet individual doesn’t annoy the loud one; it’s vice versa. So, who should move? MUSIC & GETTING ALONG If you live in an apartment complex and a neighbor is blaring their music, then you

Bobby, Jessica, Anthony Emme and GG MY HEARTFELT THANKS I want to publicly thank the concerned motorist in the gray pickup truck who encountered me on North Main Street in the early morning hours on Monday, September 21st. He had purchased for me a reflective vest to wear as I exercise on the street’s shoulder. I was not aware that I was difficult to see since I wear a light-colored jacket and thought it was visible when headlights struck it. Thank you for your kindness and your personal concern for my safety. I was surprised and do feel safer wearing it!
should speak to management about it. It’s a different story if you live in a neighborhood with a lot of space in between homes and properties. Everyone has the right to enjoy their life, but unfortunately, we will not find a place where there is total peace and quiet. The bigger picture is getting along with one another, especially your neighbors. I know of someone who has a neighbor who does nothing but curse, I would take music, any day, over that.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL A season by any other name . Fall is the term most often used to reference the season succeeding summer in the United States. But the season is referred to as “autumn” in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as “harvest” because of the harvest moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox.

The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept. How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upon their leaves.... But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer. ~John Burroughs, “The Falling Leaves,” Under the Maples

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Long-Distance Move With Cats in Pickup DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have three rescue cats. They’re the only family I’ve got. I’m planning to relocate to a rural area that is several days’ drive away. I’ll be driving a pickup truck. I feel that making my cats travel with me wouldn’t be humane. Is there an agency available that could humanely and safely transport my cats? -Karl in Avon, New York DEAR KARL: I can totally relate! Years ago, I moved across the country with a very nervous cat in a carrier next to me on the bench seat of my pickup truck. Even though I made sure he had water, food and anxiety meds prescribed by the veterinarian, it was a stressful trip for him, and he did not eat or even poop for the whole two-day trip. Once I reached our new home, he returned to his usual snuggly self. Traveling with all three cats is possible with planning and may be the least stressful option for them. If you have an extended-cab pickup, make room in the back seat for three cat carriers. Put a litter pan on the floor and cover with plastic wrap while traveling; at rest stops, open one carrier at a time and let one cat out to use the litter pan and to snuggle with you (don’t open the vehicle doors while you do this). Look for pet-friendly hotels that will let you keep the cats in the room. Airline cargo transport can quickly transport pets across long distances. But there is a risk of death for pets traveling in airline cargo. Another option is private pet transport. If you choose this service, make sure they are insured and bonded, and that they will stay in contact with you throughout the trip.

Peak viewing times Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www.weather.com/maps/fall-foliage for the peak times for many areas of the U.S.

How do I get rid of bishop’s weed? It invaded a bed of lily of the valley and I donít want to kill that as well. - Kathleen C. Bishop’s weed has an incredibly dense root system which is quite difficult to eradicate. You would need to remove the lily of the valley plants, then smother the entire bed for at least six growing months; a year would be more effective. The ground is frozen during December,
January, February, and March, so plants are dormant, not growing. Before replanting your lily of the valley, completely remove all current soil from the roots by soaking and using a forceful hose. Cover the area with landscape fabric or 6 layers of newspaper with overlapping edges, then top with several inches of mulch. Secure the edges with stones or branches. The newspapers will gradually disintegrate, but you would need to pull out the landscape fabric. If you don’t remove the fabric, it will
gradually break down in to smaller pieces, become mixed into the soil, and impede root growth. Watch the edges of this area during growing months, and spray any bishop’s weed plants that emerge with herbicide.

Village of Fairport Completes Phase I of
Bicentennial Canal Gateway BY AMANDA DUDEK WITH THANKS TO MCDOUGALL COMMUNICATIONS
O
n Thursday, September 17th, the Fairport Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) held a ribbon cutting ceremony and news conference to honor the completion of Phase I of the Bicentennial Canal Gateway Project. The ceremony was held off of Fairport’s South Main Street on the Fairport Observation Deck which is situated on the Southwest bank of the Erie Canal and overlooking the Lift Bridge. Speakers included Mayor Julie Domaratz and New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian Stratton. Local leadership’s goal “to reinforce the Village of Fairport as a prime destination to live, work and play” is being realized – and on time! Phase I entailed placing the observation deck and non-motorized boat deck, new sidewalks, road base, lighting, landscaping, and historical interpretive signage. To accomplish this, the southwest bank needed to be cleared of all debris and brush and all utilities were removed and buried. The results included enhancements along the south bank, including a new park that will feature an interpretive heritage trail to celebrate the Erie Canal Bicentennial. Those attending the ribbon cutting were invited to participate in an optional walkabout along the Interpretive Heritage Trail with Perinton Town Historian, Bill Porray. This first phase, which ran up a price tag of $850K between design and construction, began in February.
View of the Erie Canal above Fairport - John Kucko
The cost of such a large project has raised concerns among some that village residents’ taxes may be impacted. The project’s expected total cost of $2.45M, with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) contribution of $300K, the Fairport Office of Community and Economic Development (OCED) contribution of $500K, the Canal Corporation contribution of $150K, still leaves the Village of Fairport responsible for $1.15M. However, residents are assured they need not worry. The Project, say officials, has been incorporated into the village’s long-term capital plan, and there will be no expected tax increases due to the project. Village officials believe firmly that the Canal is an important piece of Fairport’s history and a defining element of the village. Therefore, the Village seized the opportunity to invest and enhance an existing asset that provides for recreation, community gatherings and residential pride throughout the Fairport community. Erie Canal, Fairport - John Kucko
The second phase of the Project is slated to begin in November, which incidentally is when Fairport’s Lift Bridge is expected to be substantially complete. Both reflect positively on the Village’s commitment to being “Fairport on the Rise.” The Bicentennial Canal Gateway Project Phase II will take place on the northwest bank of the Erie Canal. The project will include all new docks and dock utilities, lighting, a new non-motorized, small craft boat launch, and ADA accessible features throughout (e.g. kayak launch, observation deck). There will be multi-mode access and signage on the Lift Bridge. Docks will extend to the canal path to encourage access to the water and will also be utilized for events and staging. Phase II of the Project is scheduled for completion in fall 2021.

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN. Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Get new skills. Learn which skills you have that are transferrable to a new career and which ones you may need to acquire. * “Peppermint is a wonderful cure for indigestion. To make a quick peppermint tea, use a rolling pin to smash three to four peppermint candies. Add them to a glass of water and microwave for a minute and a half. Stir to melt the candies completely, and drink slowly.” -- G.L. in California * Don’t stop reading just because it’s hard to get to a library! Many public libraries are offering delivery services these days. My local library will let you reserve books online for quick pickup, renew your due date or even have books delivered to your home. Some have regular seminars on all kinds of topics -- and many of them are done virtually. * If you are replacing a hinge to rehang a door and you need to use the same holes, make sure you add grip by placing a matchstick or toothpick in the hole before rescrewing the attachments. Just break it off flush with the frame. It will add some security to the hole so it won’t be as loose. * Maintain a list of all drugs you take -both prescription and over the counter -- and when you fill a new prescription, give a copy to your pharmacist to check for interactions. Also, if you have multiple or complicated medical issues, it might help to patronize a single pharmacy. That way, the pharmacist can advise you of any interactions or complications.
