PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Prepare Your Home for a New Puppy DEAR PAW'S CORNER: This Christmas, we planned to get a puppy, but it is too young to leave its mother yet. Instead of revealing the puppy on Christmas Day, we wrapped a big box that had a little note in it from Santa saying that a new puppy will arrive soon, and to write down their ideas for a name on the back of the card. Do you have any tips on how we can prepare the house for the puppy's arrival in a few weeks? -- Chet in Boise, Idaho
Sterling is a 1 year old Shih Tzu and the cutest RIT Tiger. He has two “girlfriends” and loves his walks and playing with his favorite toy, Monkey.
DEAR CHET: First, kudos to you for handling the Christmas announcement so well! That's a great way to surprise the kids during the gift-opening while not having to supervise a puppy who has no idea what is going on. And keeping the puppy with its mother until it's at least 8 to 12 weeks old is so important. Involving the kids in preparation for the puppy's arrival is important. Explain to them that puppies like to explore -- often with their teeth. So they need to put away their toys, clothing and anything that they don't want to get chewed up. Puppies can also get into foods and cleaning items that can be dangerous or deadly for them, so those items need to be lifted off the floor or removed from the house's common areas entirely. Talk to them about how they can help train the new puppy. This will prepare them for how to handle, talk to and correct the puppy from the first day of its arrival. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Big thank you Thank you to the people who bought my dinner last Saturday night at a local restaurant. It’s a hard season for me since my husband and I were married Christmas Day. He passed from Agent Orange in 2011. It was so nice of them to treat me to dinner. I hope they have a very blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Thank you again for being so thoughtful and generous to someone they didn’t know.

Courteous Drivers I’d like to give a shout out to the Henrietta drivers who show such courtesy and caution when cyclists are going through intersections or crossing the crosswalks. They wait until the cyclist is completely through the intersection or over the crosswalk before making their turns. Thank you for truly sharing the road.
Not Playgrounds Please let us remind you that senior apartment buildings are not playgrounds. You need to be more respectful of the elderly that live there. Take the children outside to play or to a playground where it's more suitable and safe for the tenants. Appointments I’m furious about, mostly medical offices, when they call to reschedule an appointment that you’ve been waiting months for. They want to reschedule for sometimes 2 to 3 months, if not more, out further. How about “bumping” others that haven’t been waiting so long. If it’s not your fault that the appointment is cancelled but it seems you’re the one that inconvenienced. You have no heart To all the people that dump their animals, you are the lowest. Do you even care that as you drive away, they are thinking what they did wrong? Take them to a shelter so they are warm and fed. How can you even sleep at night.

Here’s a Tip * Before you use your grater to grate cheese, give it a quick shot of nonstick spray. It will keep the cheese from gunking up in the grate. If you need softened butter for a recipe, you can grate it from frozen and it will soften up very quickly, but not melt like in a microwave. * Clean your cellphone screen often. This is especially important if you have a smartphone. We use our fingers nonstop to touch the phone, then put it directly up to our face. It’s a germ’s paradise. Just remember: A quick swipe with an alcohol cloth might save you from getting the flu this season. Stay healthy! * When heater season is in full effect -- like now -- I keep a spray bottle of water to which I add two tablespoons of liquid fabric softener. I spritz the house from time to time, and it will add humidity as well as a pleasant scent, but it also keeps my carpets from making my kids little zappers (from static buildup when dragging their feet!). -- M.A. in Ohio (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Host responsibly. Even people who don’t intend to leave their homes can take steps to make New Year’s Eve safer for everyone. If you’re hosting a party at home, do so responsibly, making sure none of your guests overindulge and making the party less about drinking and more about having fun. Shift the focus from toasting drinks to games and activities that don’t include alcohol. Make sure to have plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages on hand and encourage people who are drinking to eat full meals and drink water throughout the night. People who fill up on food and water during the party may feel full, which may discourage them from having extra drinks. While many people will expect to drink alcohol on New Year’s Eve, don’t stock up on too much alcohol, the availability of which may encourage guests to overindulge. Hosts also should keep the phone numbers of local taxi services handy just in case some guests cannot drive themselves home safely.
DID YOU KNOW? The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

The Power of Shopping Local: Building Stronger Communities BY SUZIE WELLS
I
n a world dominated by big-box retailers and online shopping giants, it’s easy to overlook the importance and impact of supporting local businesses. However, the benefits of shopping locally extend far beyond individual purchases, reaching into the very heart of our communities. There are so many reasons to choose local businesses to help build stronger, more resilient communities. Local businesses are the backbone of a community’s economy. When you shop locally, a more significant percentage of your money stays within the community, circulating through various local businesses and contributing to the area’s overall economic growth. Supporting local businesses helps create jobs and fosters entrepreneurship, as it provides opportunities for individuals to start and sustain their ventures.
Community Involvement Local business owners are more likely to be actively involved in community initiatives and events. They sponsor local sports teams, participate in fundraisers, and contribute to the community’s overall well-being. Resilience in Economic Downturns Communities with a strong base of local businesses tend to be more resilient during economic downturns. The interdependence of local businesses fosters a supportive network that can weather economic challenges more effectively than areas overly reliant on external corporations.
Shopping locally gives the gift that keeps giving, with: Personalized Service One of the standout features of local businesses is the personalized and attentive service they provide. Local shop owners often have a deep knowledge of their products and customers, allowing them to offer tailored recommendations and a more personalized shopping experience. Deb Paul says, “By spending your money locally, you may find yourself in a heartfelt conversation about your holiday plans and favorite seasonal recipes, as opposed to the more commercialized alternative... with incessant sales pitches and half-hearted, corporate-mandated greetings.” Fostering Social Connections
Unique and Handcrafted Products Local businesses frequently offer unique and handcrafted products not found in mainstream stores. Whether it’s handmade crafts, artisanal foods, or locally-designed clothing, these items add character and diversity to the community. Environmental Benefits Shopping locally often involves shorter transportation distances for goods, reducing the carbon footprint associated with shipping. This contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way of consuming goods.
Local businesses often serve as gathering spots where people meet, connect, and build a sense of community. Coffee shops, bookstores, and local markets become hubs for social interactions, contributing to a more connected and vibrant community. In a globalized world, the choices we make as consumers have far-reaching consequences. By choosing to shop locally, we not only stimulate economic growth but also contribute to the unique fabric of our communities. The power to build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods lies in our hands every time we make a purchase. Let’s embrace the vitality of local businesses and nurture the communities we call home.
Community Character Local businesses contribute to a community’s distinct character and charm. They often reflect the local culture and values, adding to the neighborhood’s overall identity. A thriving local business scene can attract visitors and enhance residents’ quality of life.

Estrace Cream Is Safe to Use in Woman Who Had Melanoma

---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old woman who has been using Estrace vaginal cream weekly for several years. I am in excellent health, work out daily, run half-marathons and have my own business. I take 10 mg of atorvastatin daily. Ten years ago, I had melanoma removed from my arm. My concern is the use of Estrace. My gynecologist recommended that I use it after a Pap smear, but my primary care physician is not of the same mind. I would appreciate your opinion on this. My mother had breast cancer in her 80s, my sister had uterine cancer, and my brother passed away from bladder cancer. -- C.S. ANSWER: As far as the safety of using estradiol (Estrace), the bioidentical hormone to major natural estrogen, I am definitely of the same opinion as your gynecologist. When used topically, it works on the vulva and the lining of the vagina, keeping the tissue healthy. Without estrogen, the tissues that line the female perineum can become atrophic (thinned), predisposing a woman to discomfort, infections and incontinence. The Pap smear may have resulted in a finding that was suggestive of vaginal atrophy (increased neutrophils). Without treatment, the labia can even fuse together. With long-term use, the estrogen levels in the body are only slightly higher in women who use topical estrogen compared to those who do not, so the absorption into the body is minimal. The only case where I get concerned is with someone who has a personal history of an estrogen-sensitive tumor, such as endometrial cancer and some breast cancers. In those cases, I discuss options with both the patient and their oncologist.

CREATE A SALE-WORTHY SHOWPLACE The sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover” can be applied to many situations. When it comes to selling their homes, homeowners should remember this adage as they prepare their homes for prospective buyers.
De-personalize the home. Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items.
MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear.
Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary.
Puzzle Answers This Week
Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on.
ENDING IN “AGE”
Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms. Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones. Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean. Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents. Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions.
Navigating snow y landscapes and icy streets can be difficult and uncomfortable. W inter clothing is largely classified by clothes that keep you w arm and some that keep you even w armer, but w inter need not be strictly about function. Although w inter might not be the season of high fashion, anyone can employ strategies to include form, function and fashion into their w inter ensembles. www.webstercsdjobs.org GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.
Conservation is not just for home, and business owners confronted with rising energy costs can find numerous ways to lower their energy expenses while simultaneously helping the planet.

Bra measurements are hard to come by, no doubt thanks in part to the nature of getting measured in such an intimate area of the body. But considering undergarments set the foundation for all clothing worn on top, this is one of the more important measurements to verify. Enlist the help of a friend or family member to make measurements go more smoothly.

How Can You Improve Your Health In The New Year?
Call 585-671-9210 now and let’s find out if this hour could be the beginning of a brand new you!
Now in Rochester, NY, one doctor has what may be the most important breakthrough in non-surgical back pain treatments. Before and after MRI studies have shown disc bulges shrink in size – even with the most painful cases of L4-L5 herniation.
If you’ve had disc problems for years, recently injured your back, or you’re suffering with sciatica, you must hear about these new studies. Scientific studies tell us that spinal discs are responsible for most of the aches and pains people suffer from. Discs act like a cushion between our back-bones and allow for a space at each level so the nerves can exit the spinal column. When these discs get injured or wear out from bad posture, they begin to degenerate and cause pain. Bulging and herniation begin to form, pressing on the nerve roots. If the herniation occurs at L4-L5, they can severely compromise the large sciatic nerve, causing muscle weakness, tingling, and severe pain.
Before You Go Under the Knife and Opt For Spinal Surgery… You should seriously consider a less invasive approach called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is a new technology that has been proven to reverse disc herniation. It creates a vacuum effect on the disc, which pulls the disc back into its normal position and brings in a fresh blood supply to promote healing. Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, every once and awhile I even catch a patient sleeping during sessions. You’ll simply lie on your stomach or back, whichever is comfortable, and then a specialized belt is gently put around your waist. We’ll set the machine to focus on your problem area and then the advanced Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression computer system will do the rest. Most patients feel better with just a few treatments, and, best of all, there will be no dangerous drugs, no invasive procedures, and no painful exercises.
Feel the Improvement – and Say “Yes” to Life Again With my “Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Evaluation” we’ll be able find the problem and then correct it. Think of how you’ll feel in just a few short weeks. See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living. Feel tight joints rest, relax, and free up. Feel muscles tied in knots become more supple. Feel strength in your muscles increase. You’re able to live life like a normal person again, without back pain – able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends, and finally get a good night’s rest.
Single Most Important Solution To Your Sciatica and Back Pain It’s time for you to find out if Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression will be your sciatic and back pain solution. For a very limited time, I’m running a very

For those suffering with herniated lumbar discs, a non-surgical, drugless solution is helping patients be pain free special offer where you can find out if you are a candidate for Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. People after Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression often will comment, “I only wished I had found you sooner.” This happens so often, I decided to do something about it and run this ad. Just call before November 30, 2023 and here’s what you’ll get: • an overview on your application about your back, neck or leg pain where I will listen…really listen…to the details of your unique situation. • a specialized posture exam and bilateral weight scale evaluation to determine if posture or joint problem is contributing to your pain. • a palpatory analysis of your spine and nervous system where we’ll map out how you can be helped once and for all. • a thorough analysis of your exam and X-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. You’ll get to see everything firsthand and find out if this amazing treatment will be your pain solution, like it has been for so many other patients. Until November 30, 2023 you can get everything I’ve listed here for only $37. The normal price for this type of evaluation could be much higher, so you’re saving a considerable amount by taking me up on this offer.
Our Patients Speak “After 4 treatments on the decompression table, Dale slept through the night with minimal snoring (something he has not done in several months). His usual sleep was in 1/2 hour increments. This has made a BIG change in his day-to-day attitude work-wise and family-wise. He’s getting back to his “old self”! Thank you – Dale R. “After just ONE treatment my pain diminished and I went back to work in 1 week. Now after several weeks of traction, I am walking normally, strength is back and I feel much better! Thank you Dr. O’Dell!” Mark S. Walker, LMT
Here’s What To Do Now: Due to the expected demand for this treatment, I suggest calling my office at once. The phone number is 585-671-9210. Call today and we can get started with your evaluation as soon as there’s an opening in the schedule. Our office is called O’Dell Chiropractic and you’ll find us in Webster on Ridge Road between 5 Mile Line and Webster Schroeder High School.
