One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring. PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS Not all bees build the wax or paper structures associated with traditional beehives. Those hives may not be readily visible even for bees that do build them. Wood-nesting bees can nest in twigs or dead trees. Bees may nest underground or use the burrows abandoned by small rodents. Before excavating or disturbing more remote areas of the yard, check to see if it is a habitat for bees. Leave some natural areas of the landscape untouched and do not remove twigs, mounds of dirt and native flowers to attract more bees.

Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home

SCREENED TOPSOIL

In view of the Florida Marlins COVID testing, how do you think the baseball season should go on?

On May 8th, Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home will celebrate our 3rd year anniversary! Since opening we have helped 53 families through the end of life journey. Our house is very comfortable and homey, and our volunteers are very caring, selfless individuals. We are extremely grateful to have them, and we would love to continue to add to our volunteer family. Comfort Care Homes rely on donations. Suzanne’s has no paid staff and we do not receive any income from insurance, medicare, etc. Churches, businesses, and individuals have been so generous to us. During this pandemic Suzanne’s has been able to continue our mission and stay open. People have made and donated masks to us so we can continue to follow the required safety procedures. Suzanne’s is very thankful to all of you who have helped us continue our mission! Suzanne’s is looking for caring people to join our Resident Care volunteers. Join us; you won’t regret it. Volunteering feeds the soul. No need for any medical background, just a caring heart! Email Suzanne Schuster at suzannescch@yahoo.com, or call (585) 739-0306

emphasis on nuts and seeds, fruits, vegetables and grains is the best choice for anyone. It’s been well-documented that omega-6 is inflammatory, whereas foods containing omega-3 are not. It seems to me that we should be consuming foods that have more omega-3 in them. The only problem is that, from my research, all nuts and seeds with the exception of chia and flaxseeds have a much higher ratio of the omega-6 to the omega-3. This appears to be the case with most foods, no matter which food group they are in. How can any of the healthy foods be beneficial when so much more of the “bad fats” are being ingested? -- Anon. ANSWER: Dietary fats are categorized into four groups: monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated and trans-saturated. It is accepted that monounsaturated fats have a healthy effect, reducing heart disease risk, while trans-saturated fats are clearly harmful. The effect of saturated fats on health is mixed, but those that come from processed meat increase heart disease and diabetes risk. Saturated fat overall has little effect on heart disease risk, but swapping saturated fat with unsaturated fats (both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) appears to reduce heart disease risk. Polyunsaturated fats are categorized into the omega-3 family and the omega-6 family. I also have read in many places that omega-6 fats are “bad fats,” causing inflammation. The best evidence, a 2014 review of all controlled trials published, showed that omega-6 fats are NOT inflammatory and that they DECREASE risk of heart disease compared with meat-based saturated fats. We should be consuming both omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fats, mostly from plant sources. The data support that nuts and seeds are foods we should be eating more of, but we also should be eating good sources of omega-3, including fatty fish, the chia and flaxseeds you mentioned, as well as walnuts and canola oil. Most people have to work harder to get omega-3 oils but get plenty of omega-6. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently started transitioning to a plant-based diet for preventative health reasons. While discussing the benefits of nuts and seeds with a dietitian, they had a disclaimer that flax seed can interfere with medications and to eat them two hours before or one hour after taking medications. I would not sit down and eat a handful of flax seeds, but now I am afraid to use them in the meals I prepare at all. Can you help me make a good decision in using them? -- J.E. ANSWER: For people eating reasonable amounts (like a handful or two) of flax seeds as part of a meal, it is unlikely that they would interfere with medications enough to cause any significant problem, for most medications. There are two situations that might merit concern: In powerful anti-clotting agents, such as clopidogrel, flax seeds might prompt increased activity. Secondly, flax seeds may lower blood sugar a small amount. In combination with insulin or oral diabetes drugs, the blood sugar could possibly dip lower than expected. I doubt either of these interactions is likely to cause harm, but it is reasonable to discuss with your doctor if you are on one of the classes of medications mentioned. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. RAMP Announces Founder’s Retirement and Celebrates 45 Years Contributing to the Local Music Scene By Danielle Lorenzo

R

ochester Area Music Project (RAMP) is announcing a transition –Founder Garry Manuel will begin his retirement from teaching as he passes the ownership of the music studio to his son.

For 45 years, music has been a constant thread in the life of Garry Manuel. Beginning with listening to his transistor radio, taking guitar lessons as a teen, all while growing into an accomplished singer/ songwriter and recording artist – his love of music has influenced his every step. The desire to share music with others led to him opening a music studio. His mission was focused on nurturing musicians through lessons and support of Rochester talent. Garry’s love of music continued to weave itself into other interests, such as leading music at church, involvement in social justice, serving the poor and the formation of the non-profit Project URGE. In the 60s, Garry began his musical career starting the Liquid Lyte band at Fairport High School. He also had the unique experience of attending Woodstock. Then in the 70s, Garry and friend James D. ‘Goona’ Wilson formed the group Sunup, which performed close to a decade throughout upstate New York and New England, opening for Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, The James Gang and Eric Anderson. Bass player Charlie Castilano remembers Garry’s, “inner joy with all aspects of music was obvious, always exuding leadership and enthusiasm in terms of his vocals, instrumental proficiency and appearance. He has shown these same qualities throughout his musical career as a teacher, business owner and most importantly, as an inspiration to everyone who has a love for music.”

toward building a stronger community. Recognition for this work has been earned through numerous awards. The last decade saw growth of Manuel’s Music Studio, adding retail and growing a variety of different types of instrument and voice lessons. Also, recording lessons were introduced during the recent transition to RAMP with the building of a fully developed recording studio. Outside of the business, Garry and James D. ‘Goona’ Wilson RAMP Founder made their longtime Sunup band Garry Manuel into a family affair, renamed as ‘Sonsup.’ The recording features their sons Ethan James and Marshall Westlake Manuel in edgy acoustic-rock with vocal harmonies. As Garry retires after 45 years of teaching, his wife Mary reports, “His musical tapestry continues to evolve into a masterpiece as Garry stays actively involved in songwriting and recording projects, social ministry service and assisting our son as he takes over the managing of RAMP.” Garry will continue to contribute to the Greater Rochester music scene. He looks forward to time with his family, photography and nature. Listen to one of Garry’s recent productions: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=JAekNtWIhqg ABOUT RAMP (ROCHESTER AREA MUSIC PROJECT)

In 1976, Garry began teaching guitar at Perinton Hills Music. Owner Dan Dovideo reflected, “He was wanting to teach guitar, so we immediately took him on as our first teacher. He was a natural. He was a very valuable contributor to our business. When we closed the store in 1980, Garry took his guitar students with him and formed his own studio in Fairport, which of course eventually became Manuel’s Music Studio and now RAMP. It took a lot of initiative to do this, and we are so very glad that he did! In a way, RAMP is a direct descendant of Perinton Hills Music.” In addition to the opening of Manuel’s Music Studio in 1980, the decade was marked with the birth of his record label Sunflare Songs. Sunup performances continued, including playing with bands Fair Exchange and Sweet Feelin.’ Garry also recorded jingles for ad agencies, founded Mill Music in Honeoye Falls, and participated in music ministry. In the 90s, Garry’s contributions expanded into social ministry and his founding of the non-profit Project URGE. Garry created Project URGE to strengthen under-resourced neighborhoods. This ministry is still alive and well in Rochester, with multiple sub ministries working

RAMP, Rochester Area Music Project, was established in 2017. This business expanded upon the decades-old Fairport business, Manuel’s Music Studio. RAMP remains at Manuel’s location at 31 W. Church Street in Fairport. They serve the greater Rochester area with musical lesson accessibility to Fairport, Perinton, Penfield, Victor and Pittsford. In addition to new owner Marshall Manuel, plus a team of skilled instructors, RAMP trains musicians young and old on guitar, bass, piano, drums, ukulele, recording, and vocals. Various musical genres - rock, classical, jazz, blues, folk acoustic finger styles and other popular forms provide diverse offerings for multiple interests. Classes are offered in four seasonal semesters; however, students can also jump in on a monthly basis. Their instrument purchase consultation skills can be sought out year-round by appointment, for individual trial. For more information go to: https://ramp-roc.com/ Enjoy this article? PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

REAL ESTATE SECTION

Sprayed by a Skunk! DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We were camping this weekend, and on our last day in the woods my dog “Jumper” had a run-in with a skunk. He is really rank. I tried washing him off in the lake, but it didn’t seem to help the smell at all. We had to drive home with this incredibly bad smell permeating the car. Jumper smells almost as bad today as he did on Sunday. How can I get rid of the odor? -- Rick in Burlington, Vermont DEAR RICK: That odor really lingers! Good job trying to wash Jumper’s coat in the lake as soon as possible; that may have helped a little bit. You’ll have to use a bit of chemistry to remove the oily skunk spray. Tomato juice is recommended by many people, and it does have some effect because it’s a little bit acidic and can break up some of the oils. Its aroma also helps mask the skunk scent, at least temporarily. Another cleaning recipe, found on American Kennel Club’s website (www.AKC. org), mixes baking soda with mild detergent and household hydrogen peroxide (3% strength). The foaming mixture can be worked into your dog’s coat, left on for about five minutes and then rinsed away. With any solution or recipe you use, be careful to not let it get into Jumper’s eyes, ears or nose. Many of the ingredients are irritants that can cause a lot of discomfort. Deodorizing your car will take some extra effort. You can gently clean the upholstery, floor mats and headliner with a cloth dipped in a solution of water and baking soda. The baking soda will dry to a haze and needs to be vacuumed off. Follow up with a shampoo formulated for car interiors.

WALKING Just want to say thank you to the kind, considerate, and unselfish drivers who slow down a little bit and move over a little bit as you drive by us while we are walking along the edge of a country road where there are no sidewalks to use. To all the other drivers, it would not kill you to slow down a little bit and move over a little bit When you drive by us walking because it could kill us.

IRRESPONSIBLE Teenagers really need to be more cautious at nighttime, especially around midnight. I’ve been seeing teenagers walking around and riding skateboards at nighttime, especially around 12:30-1 o’clock at night without any reflective gear or flashlights. They are wearing dark clothing, and drivers cannot see them. People who are driving may not see them due to the teenagers’ irresponsibility. Parents shouldn’t be allowing their teenagers to be out this late. Both teenagers and parents should be more responsible. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CEMETERY UPKEEP I cannot believe the way the [local] Cemetery looks. There were not any American flags at the gravesides of service men and women for the Memorial Day holiday. The lawn needs to be mowed and weed wacked, the flowers trash bin needs to be emptied, and the American Flag at the entrance of the cemetery is worn and tattered. It is just sad; it is a beautiful cemetery. I am not sure if there is a group who does this, or is it volunteer? If it is volunteer, then maybe more volunteers are needed, if you did need more volunteers, maybe post something looking for help.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A 7-year-old boy had long complained about his swollen and aching jaw, and small wonder: Surgeons at the Saveetha Dental College and Hospital in Chennai, India, found 526 teeth crammed inside his mouth! After removing a seven-ounce, “well-defined bag-like mass” from his jaw containing hundreds of miniature teeth, it took the team five hours to carefully search for and count all of them. The hospital asserted that it was “the first ever case to be documented worldwide, where so many minute teeth were found in a single individual.”

What is the best product to grow grass? If I remove some tree roots that are poking through the ground will that kill the tree? Laurie O. There are numerous grass seeds and seed blends available in a wide range of prices. A Northeast blend is best for our area. In our northern cool-humid region, lawn grass must be perennial, winter hardy, able to withstand frequent mowing, and relatively disease free. A typical lawn mixture might be something like 65% Kentucky bluegrass, 20% fine leaf fescue, 15% perennial ryegrass. This type of blend is more expensive than seed that is all or primarily ryegrass. Kentucky bluegrass is the predominant high-quality lawn grass for our climate. It is the best species for full sun, it forms good sod because it

spreads with rhizomes (underground lateral stems), and can withstand frequent mowing and foot traffic. It takes about 2 weeks to germinate and 6-8 weeks to produce dense sod. Perennial ryegrass is a popular component of grass seed mixtures because it germinates quickly, often in 2-4 days, providing a uniform lawn in about 2 weeks. Fine-leaf fescues are well adapted to infertile or acidic soil and can tolerate shaded conditions, but cannot withstand heavy traffic. Therefore, a blend provides the best qualities of each variety for an all-purpose lawn grass. Follow directions on the seed bag for seeding process and rates (lbs/1000 sq ft). The hot dry summertime is not the optimum time for grass seeding, but if you must, then mulch with straw and water (sprinkler works best) daily. When you begin mowing, leave clippings on the lawn for the nutrients

they provide. Fertilize in the fall with a sure that the tree remains stable and fertilizer that has a high percentage of healthy before taking out more. The fewer above ground roots you remove, slow release nitrogen. If tree roots are causing disruption in the less likely you are to damage the your lawn, it is okay to prune a few tree. small roots away, but care must be taken not to injure the tree. Do not cut away any root that is more than 2 inches in diameter. A rule of thumb is to measure the diameter of the tree about 4 ft up from the ground and prune out only roots that are 3-5 times that distance away from the trunk (2í trunk diameter, go out 6-10í to take out above ground roots). Never take out more than 20% of the roots showing, then wait a year or two to be

It would be easier and less potentially damaging to mulch. Use a 3-4 inch layer of mulch around such trees with exposed roots that make mowing more difficult. Do not form a “volcano” of mulch which seems to be too popular in the landscape and can do severe damage to the tree.

KEEP CALM & DON’T BUG OUT ABOUT THE ASIAN GIANT HORNET by Dick Rogers, principal scientist and entomologist, Bayer Bee Care Program (NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States.

(Family Features) Families are alw ays looking for w ays to enjoy vacation time together that maximizes fun, w hile minimizing the budget. To help your family reduce costs on summer travel: Prepare the car. Purchases from your local grocery store are cheaper than convenience stores and fast food restaurants en route, so save time and money by pre-buying snacks and drinks. Take advantage of the time together by talking, singing and laughing. M ake the journey as fun as the final destination.

What do we know? Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019.

Puzzle Answers This Week

Who (or what) is at risk? While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general. However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies.

BODYBUILDERS

On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed. You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s. How can we help protect the bees? It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers. As pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, crop production and biodiversity, I recommend you stay calm and keep gardening to provide your fuzzy friends with the flowers and habitat they need to thrive. Learn more about how to plant pollinator-friendly gardens that help bees, monarchs and other important pollinators by visiting https://beehealth.bayer.us/home. Dick Rogers has been a professional entomologist for more than four decades and has been keeping and studying bees for over 40 years. He joined the Bayer Bee Care Program in 2009.
