Is a Cat Enclosure Inhumane? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor, when she’s doing yardwork, routinely puts her cat into something that looks like a chicken coop. It has a screen enclosure and a little wooden house. I’m very worried that the cat is too hot sitting in the enclosure and will get injured. Should I tell her to keep her cat inside? -- Worried Neighbor in Wichita DEAR WORRIED: Your neighbor is probably putting the cat inside a cat enclosure -- or maybe a repurposed chicken coop. Cat enclosures are getting very popular, especially in the cities and suburbs. These are a good way for an indoor cat to spend some time outdoors without the risk of running away, getting lost or being attacked by another animal. It can reduce exposure to fleas and ticks, too. If the cat has a shady place to hide from the sun while inside the shelter, and a bowl of fresh water, it is just fine to be in there for short periods (an hour or two). Since your neighbor is outside and within sight of the cat, it’s clear that she is keeping an eye on it. If you want to have a conversation about it, be polite. “That’s a neat enclosure; what a great way for your cat to get outside for a while!” is perhaps the best icebreaker in this case. Otherwise, if the cat does not appear distressed and is sitting or lying calm and alert, then there’s nothing to worry about, especially if your neighbor brings the cat inside after finishing the yardwork. If you have serious concerns (the cat is in the enclosure 24/7, looks very distressed or unhealthy), consider striking up a conversation or, if you’re uncomfortable doing that, contacting animal control. Send your tips, comments andquestions to ask@pawscorner. com.

BOLD COLORS ADD VITALITY TO HOMES Colors on opposite ends of the color wheel will always complement each other. Green paired with pink (a lighter shade of green’s opposite, red) calls to mind the great outdoors. These hues can add a touch of floral spring sunshine even when that season has long since passed. Opt for a deep green and a carnation pink for maximum impact. And don’t forget a vase full of fresh blooms as the finishing factor.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Rake leaves as they start to fall more heavily. Once leaves begin to fall more heavily, rake them up and add them to compost piles. The resource GardeningKnowHow.com notes composting leaves creates a dark, rich and organic matter that can add nutrients to garden soil and loosen compacted earth. Leaving leaves on the lawn once they start to fall in great numbers makes it hard for grass blades to breathe, and the leaves can block moisture from reaching the soil, which needs water to maintain strong roots. In addition, potentially harmful pathogens can breed on damp leaves left on a lawn, and such bacteria can cause significant damage to the turf over time.

HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER Narrow the gap between indoor and outdoor temperatures. The DOE notes that the smaller the difference between the temperature indoors and outside the lower cooling costs will be. While it may be tempting to set thermostats to room temperature (68 F) on days when temperatures reach 90 F or above, that’s an enormous temperature gap that will result in a high energy bill. Instead, the DOE recommends setting thermostats to 78 F whenever possible.

LeRoy Hearth & Home (585) 502-0139 leroyhearthandhome.com STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Gardening is widely considered as relaxing a hobby as it is rewarding. Although gardening when temperatures are mild, such as in spring and fall, can be relaxing, gardening can be much more physically taxing and even dangerous when temperatures rise during the dog days of summer. Gardens need tending even when temperatures outside are especially hot, so gardeners must take steps to protect their health when working in their gardens during the summer.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR
triggerboy322@aol.com
Fill it with spirits No bar is complete without alcohol and mixers. Homeowners can buy the types of spirits they love and complete their bars with the basics for mixing. When stocking a bar, keep in mind that everything does not have to be top-shelf. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and whiskey are some of the more popular spirits. Simple syrup, fresh fruit, club soda, cola, and bitters are examples of versatile mixers. Entertaining guru Martha Stewart says to have enough supplies on hand for guests. Expect each person to have three drinks (requiring three glasses), use a pound of ice, and three cocktail napkins per two-hour party. Don’t forget to also have nonalcoholic items on hand for those who don’t imbibe.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Do Homework First on Clinical Trials --DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has had dementia for over two years. There is an ad in our local paper for an Alzheimer’s disease study. It says, “This study will assess how safe and effective an investigational drug is at slowing the progression of early (prodromal) or mild Alzheimer’s disease.” Is this protocol legit? I don’t trust this type of ad not coming from a hospital. I couldn’t find any information about the sponsors of the research. -- J.N. ANSWER: I was able to find the trial, called the Graduate II trial, which is sponsored by the manufacturer of the drug being tested, called gantenerumab. This drug is designed to reduce the size of the amyloid protein plaques in the brain, which are suspected of being the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s disease, and to prevent new ones from forming. It is indeed a legitimate trial. The best place to find out about these is on the clinicaltrials.gov website. The trial is in phase III. The drug has passed both phase I trials, which are designed to look at safety, and phase II, which look at both safety and effectiveness. Now the investigators are studying the effectiveness of the drug in a larger population, usually for a longer period of time. Drugs that do well in phase III clinical trials may be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Alzheimer’s drug trials are difficult, because the disease often progresses slowly, and large, time-consuming trials are necessary. In general, I encourage people to consider participating in clinical trials, as they are essential for clinical advances. For gantenerumab in particular, phase I and II trials did show that the drug is effective at reducing the amount of amyloid plaque in the brain; however, clinical trials did not show improvement in memory and brain function. The new trial is using a higher dose and recruiting patients with earlier stage illness. I don’t have enough information to answer whether your wife, having had symptoms for two years, might be eligible for this trial, but I would certainly encourage you to find out more about it. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently started transitioning to a plant-based diet for preventative health reasons. While discussing the benefits of nuts and seeds with a dietitian, they had a disclaimer that flax seed can interfere with medications and to eat them two hours before or one hour after taking medications. I would not sit down and eat a handful of flax seeds, but now I am afraid to use them in the meals I prepare at all. Can you help me make a good decision? -- J.E. ANSWER: For people eating reasonable amounts (like a handful or two) of flax seeds as part of a meal, it is unlikely that they would interfere with medications enough to cause any significant problem, for most medications. There are two situations that might merit concern: In powerful anti-clotting agents, such as clopidogrel, flax seeds might prompt increased activity. Secondly, flax seeds may lower blood sugar a small amount. In combination with insulin or oral diabetes drugs, the blood sugar could possibly dip lower than expected. I doubt either of these interactions is likely to cause harm, but it is reasonable to discuss with your doctor if you are on one of the classes of medications mentioned. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc., All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Future Generations Are Counting on You The designation "senior" covers a long stretch of ages, some of us much older or younger than others. It's the older ones who perhaps have the biggest lesson to learn ... that time does not stretch forward indefinitely. I learned that lesson today when I received word that one of my oldest relatives had passed away. His name was Henry, and I never met him. I hooked up with him and his lovely wife many years ago when I started my genealogy hunt. We came together like family, which we were. Christmas cards, newsy letters, new genealogy tidbits, just as though we'd always known each other. I would visit someday, I always told myself, not only Henry and his wife, but all my other newly found relatives in their area. Time and physical distance can't change DNA, and I suspect that should I walk through their small town, I would be easily identified as one of them. All the questions I had, I told myself, could wait until I visited. I waited too long. We owe it to the family generations that come after us to leave them as much information as possible. But where do we start? We start with the family members that are ahead of us in age. We ask questions, we take notes, we write things down. Depending how "senior" we are, we might have parents still living, or if we're younger and have lucky DNA, we might even have a grandparent or two. Type up your information, save the file and print it out. Make copies and hand them out to as many of your relatives as you can. You might look at the generations after you and think they won't be interested in their ancestry. You'll probably be wrong. One of them, maybe years from now, will start to wonder ... and your information will be there. Don't wait. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Rochester Women’s Network:
Supporting Women Today
BY AMANDA DUDEK
W
hen the Rochester Women’s Network (RWN) was founded in 1978, classified ads still specified “hire male” or “hire female.” The fact that many now find this shocking is a testament to the efforts of several groups, including those like the RWN which support professional women. While some things have indeed changed for the better, the RWN continues its critical support of the professional and personal lives of women. As a member-driven, women’s networking organization, RWN’s leadership roles are mostly filled by women in business. “We have a board and committees which provide opportunities for individuals to come and sit in the positions of leadership in our nonprofit,” shared Jennifer Cave, VP of RWN Membership and owner and Chief Operating Officer at Rochester Research Associates. Some things, however, have remained quite the same. “One of the first workshops RWN taught work/life balance and how you find it,” recalled Cave. “Today, it is still one of our hottest issues, and we continue to bring the experts in to talk about it. The wage gap also remains a popular topic.” In fact, the RWN has addressed many topics since its inception at a conference for women and money. Over 300 women met to transform the “old boys” networking concept into a new woman’s specialty. It was the conference planners themselves who became RWN’s founding mothers, holding their first meeting in April 1978 and reaching 383 members by May of that year. Using strong, active words such as “support, empower, inspire, connect, grow, and succeed,” it is perhaps the RWN mantra that is its clearest indicator of what women were and are up against: “We’ll never ask you to sell chocolate bunnies or bake cookies.” The group has been more than true to its word. “We have grown to offer special interest groups with focus on personal, professional and social interests,” shared Cave. “Wine tasting, local restaurants, leadership, business referrals... RWN focuses on the overall picture, helping women personally and professionally, taking a holistic mind, body and soul. We also usually hold two major events: The W Awards at which we recognize women who are doing something outstanding in our community for other women – such as Kitty Van Bortel and Louise Slaughter – and a symposium on topics of professional development.”
RWN members support each other and work hard but never forget to have fun along the way! “We also typically hold a monthly networking event, free to our members. Members can sponsor our monthly networking event to promote their business,” Cave continued. “Finally, as a membership driven organization, we have several committees on which our members can serve, providing them with multiple learning and leadership opportunities in our nonprofit organization.” Naturally, like many other organizations and businesses, RWN has been unable to hold its major events. This has been quite impactful as RWN is funded by donations and membership. “We have been doing online programs and things like that, but our major events bring in thousands of dollars.” Cave explained. “We extended everyone’s membership for 60 days, just the same, and we are hopeful that we will increase our membership and people start jobs again.” Those who join will find a world of support waiting for them. “In RWN, we have many members who are introverts,” said Cave. “We help our members find their confidence. That is one of the best things we can provide: helping women find their voice and inner strength.” Diversity and inclusion have also long been an important piece of RWN. Leadership in RWN, spearheaded by their VP of Diversity and Inclusion address these important pieces at every board meeting. “We pride ourselves on being

inclusive,” shared Cave. “Still, we constantly challenge our thoughts to see if we might possibly be excluding others in any way.” RWN is currently working to ensure that interpreters are available for any members who are deaf or hard of hearing. “We do not want to leave anyone behind,” Cave added. “We are very open to input.” The support and community at RWN have proven effective. “Two success stories leap immediately to mind,” she shared. “About ten years ago, one member, Lynn, wanted to start her own business. She joined RWN, and when she speaks about it, she is brought to tears when she shares how much growth this organization has brought to her. Another is KC Rossi who joined RWN and within her first year of putting in effort and taking advantage of our opportunities, she was able to add significant revenue to her business.” Personal experience confirms what Cave has witnessed. “I originally joined RWN because I was taking over a business and was looking for networking. I was searching for an insurance agent, an accountant, those things, which I was able to find. At the same time, I was surprised to find that the relationships I have made here have been so much more that I would ever have expected. The members are so caring and supportive, breaking any negative stereotypes.” Cave encourages women to join RWN and fully embrace the opportunities it brings. “If you are involved 100%, you will not regret it,” she said. “Whatever you are looking for at RWN, whether it’s personal growth, professional development, friendships, you will be able to achieve it if you put in your all and participate. If you need support, we are here.”
RWN focuses on the overall picture, helping women personally and professionally, taking a holistic mind, body and soul approach!

Corner of Lincoln & Plank Roads Adults $10.00 • Children $6.00 1 /2 BBQ chicken $6.00 Meal includes 1/2 BBQ chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, pickles, roll, butter & ice cream.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Whenever a stew or soup recipe calls for whole herbs to be used and then taken out later, I put them in a tea infuser. I could never seem to get them all before, and inevitably someone would be served a whole bay leaf or such. This makes it foolproof.” -- J.R. in Georgia * You can use an old toothbrush or nail brush to get grime out of the hinge area of the toilet seat. * If you have a plant cutting you are trying to root in water, here’s a tip to keep the end from resting on the bottom of your container: Use a twist tie wrapped around the stem on one side and hooked over the edge of the container on the other.

Serving 4:00 until sold out. TAKE OUT ONLY! Please wear mask & follow all CDC recommendations.
NOW HERE’S A TIP How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Looking for a possible reason to like Monday? It’s the least rainy day of the week. While the exact science behind this is unclear, researchers believe it’s likely due to the decrease in man-made pollution over the weekend.
* “Whenever I get new e-mail addresses, I always add them to my online address book. I also write them in my old-fashioned paper address book. Sounds like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised by how many people rely on their e-mail address book to remember all those addresses. It just takes one time for a computer virus to erase everything -- not to mention if something happens to your hard drive. Just a reminder!” -- B.R. in Pennsylvania * Using ice-cold sour cream instead of ice-cold water in your pie crust recipe will give you a flakier crust. * Here’s a tip to gauge your exercise level: If you can’t get out a sentence, then you are in a high intensity phase. If you can’t talk at all during your entire workout, you are going too hard. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF LABOR DAY Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime fun and a day when thousands of people gather across the country for their final big barbecue blowouts. Labor Day has evolved into a holiday about relaxing with friends and family, and that has led to its origins getting somewhat lost in the celebratory shuffle. Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day was established to highlight the achievements of American workers, both from a social and an economic perspective. Labor Day highlights one of the main benefits of being a citizen of the United States, the ability to have professional freedom and contribute to the prosperity and strength of the country through gainful employment. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. Celebrated annually on the first Monday of September, it is believed that Labor Day was first promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which also organized the first labor-related parade in New York City. Although the true fathers of Labor Day remain a topic of debate, some historians maintain that Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor put forward the first Labor Day proposal in May 1882 after witnessing a labor festival in Toronto, Canada. Labor Day was largely celebrated in the past with parades, speeches and a day off of work for the country’s workers. Similar festivities occur to this day, with the gradual introduction of other events that mark the unofficial end of summer.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895. They then compared birth and death information with those centenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenarians were born between September and November.

THANK YOU, DOUG! While driving down Latta Road, in Greece, last Wednesday afternoon, I drove over a muffler in the roadway. It was wedged under my car. I immediately pulled over in the median. Very soon after, a loader type vehicle was coming along. I gestured to the driver, Doug, a Town of Greece employee. He stopped to help. After jacking the car up slightly, he was able to pull the muffler out. Thank you so much ONE LAST CHANCE The July 20/27th (double issue) of Time Magazine had numerous features on just how dire our planet’s environment is, at this point in its life. The writing was exceptional as many topics were covered. Certainly, the COVID 19 is at the top of our list in terms of catastrophes, but the heartbeat of our earth is racing toward life support and is a dangerously close second to the COVID. Do yourself a favor and find this important issue and take the time to come up to speed on what we need to do to save our planet! One redeeming aspect of this terrible pandemic is that it has made us stop (pause), access and alter our lifestyles for the greater good. We so desperately need to do the same for Mother Earth! Q &A with the

Gardeners
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
I seem to have a knack for growing plants where they don’t belong. I am trying to grow date palms in containers and have three date palms ranging from 3” to 6” tall. With winter fast approaching, how should I keep them warm enough to survive and thrive? - Josiah C. Date Palms originate from North Africa and Asia and can tolerate some cooler temperatures. In our
climate in winter, however, they will need protection from a hard freeze which could kill them. Bring them in when temperatures fall into the 40’s at night, and find a bright, sunny window inside with room temperatures of 65-75 degrees. Water them sparingly in winter, letting the soil dry out between waterings. Make sure to provide good drainage. If they stand in water for long periods (a day or more), the roots can be damaged, and the tree could die.
While you should fertilize the trees about once per month in spring through fall, do not fertilize at all in winter. Avoid cold drafts near your young palm trees, and they should winter well and be ready to set out next spring and continue to grow and thrive.
