It’s no secret that grapes are woven into the history of Naples, earning its title as the “Grape Capital of the World.” Locals find creative ways to celebrate the abundance of this versatile fruit, with pies being just one of the area’s many grape delicacies. Although the concept of a grape pie may seem foreign to some outof-town visitors, once they try it they are convinced –there is no dessert quite like it!
The first pies originated from Irene Bouchard, who made them as a way to attract new customers to the local Redwood Restaurant. It took off from there, with people seeking out this sweet treat and even putting a unique spin on their own. The story of the grape pie is engrained into the fabric of the town not just as a regional food offering, but a metaphor for the ingenuity
of the town itself. Locals celebrate making something that is already great – simple Concord grapes – into something even more exciting.
The star of this famous dessert is the Concord grape, which is plentiful in the Naples region. There are many grape pie sellers throughout the area, but none of them are as loved or well known as Cindy’s Grape Pies, which has served the community by offering pies and other delicious baked goods made from scratch, using fresh locally sourced ingredients for over 40 years.
Founded in 1977 by Cindy Trecziak, the pies were first a way to earn some extra money for Christmas gifts. They quickly became a big hit and Cindy began selling them full-time until 2019 when she sold the business to Matt Cadrette and his wife, Lisa Drumheller.
With a culinary background and strong connection to food, Matt and Lisa always wanted to run their own business and jumped at the opportunity to take over such a long-standing staple of the community that allowed them to be a part of a great local tradition.
Cindy’s remains one of the few places in the area where people can get grape pies throughout the entire year, not just limited to grape season. Although there are many

ways to make grape pies, Cindy’s uses an oldfashioned crust and separate cooking process for the grapes, which gives them a nice texture that preserves their integrity.
In addition to grape pies, Cindy’s also sells other seasonal pies and baked goods made from fresh New York State produce. Their grape-filled cookies are one of their most popular items, in addition to their other offerings. Cindy’s even has a pie door where customers walk right up to order their baked goods. It’s how Cindy’s has been operating since its inception, and it’s a charming way to order dessert! It’s a fitting touch for a town that boasts a wonderful sense of community and Cindy’s is keeping the tradition alive, one sweet treat at a time.

Staff is welcoming and friendly, acting as a second family to most and helping to cement the fact that, according to Gorton, the cafe provides a close-knit environment for the people of Naples and surrounding communities. Gorton harbors a great appreciation for the fact her staff is always willing to help out in any way they can, including preparing food, cleaning tables, and aiding customers, to name a few.

Greg and Kate Borden charged a hose and answered the call to create Engine 14 Brewery at 52 West Avenue, Building 2 in Naples, NY. After retiring from rescue operations at the Rochester Fire Department, Greg shifted gears to deploy his passion for brewing craft beers.
Before Borden retired, he found and acquired a retired fire engine. That fire engine was commissioned for a new service at Engine 14 Brewery, with its shield inspiring the name and logo.
Sirens lit up in the hearts of the Bordens when they
detected the perfect location just steps from Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars. They stretched the lines and worked tirelessly to launch this unique business in the Finger Lakes.
Receive a warm welcome here when you’re hosed and weary, looking for camaraderie and fun. Order a cream ale, lager, pilsner, stout, wheat beer, IPA, or brown ale — all brews are made in-house with their seven-barrel system! With ten beers on tap, Engine 14 also brews its own seltzers and offers wine and cocktail selections if that’s more your style.
The décor is heavily influenced by the Bordens’ backgrounds in firefighting, including fire poles, ladders, and extinguishers, which serve to enhance the overall experience. Service with a smile is always on tap with their friendly staff!
You’ll feel like family, especially when you sit at the family table that was brought in from the headquarter firehouse where Greg worked. This table represents times of celebration, mourning, and endearing sentiments, and this nostalgic piece brings a unique vibe to Engine 14 Brewery.
Other amenities include popular bands playing on weekends, indoor corn hole on Wednesday nights, and Euchre on Thursdays. The industrial garage doors are open during warm weather, and Engine 14 Brewery is happy to host and cater events, parties, weddings, and fundraisers.
Still to come is an onsite kitchen, restaurant, and new weekend daytime events!
Come extinguish all of your worries and woes; Engine 14 Brewery is open and ready to serve you!

Whether you are looking to plan a full wine tour or just stop in to check out one of these unique ventures, it
Just a few miles south of Canandaigua Lake you will find Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars – one of the most well-known and historic wineries in the area. Home to the popular Red Cat wine, it’s a spot you won’t want to miss when visiting Naples!
Grapes have been in the Hazlitt family for more than 170 years. The family’s history first started when David Hazlitt and Clarissa Roberts Hazlitt purchased land in Hector, NY where they shipped fruit to regional markets and early wine pioneers, including Widmer Wine Cellars. In 1985, the family was faced with a tough decision as crop prices were dropping. That’s when Jerry and Elaine Hazlitt started Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards and released the award-winning Red Cat wine.
The history of Red Cat is as rich and colorful as the drink itself. This sweet, red wine is made using highquality Catawba grapes, which are a labrusca variety, native to the Finger Lakes region. At the time Hazlitt 1852 opened, it was popular in the area to create wine using these grapes, but it was typically pink in color. Wanting to do something different, Jerry blended the Catawba grapes, which give the wine a sweet, tangy zing with red hybrid grapes to give it a ruby red color. When harvesting grapes in the vineyard, the farmers often referred to the Catawba grapes as “the cats” for short, and that is how the name “Red Cat” was born.
It was an immediate success and continued to grow in popularity and recognition throughout the years. Today, it is available in several states along the East Coast, available to ship to 36 states, and remains the most popular wine in the Hazlitt’s portfolio. So popular, in
fact, that to keep up with demand, the family expanded in 2011 to open a production facility and second winery in the village of Naples. This historic property was previously Widmer Wine Cellars, one of the first in the region with a rich history of its own. Overtime, the family has renovated and restored the original building, but also infused its own history into it.
Today, sixth-generation grape growers and sibling co-owners, Doug Hazlitt and Leigh Hazlitt-Triner are continuing to expand the family’s legacy. Although its most well-known for its Red Cat wine, Hazlitt offers an impressive lineup of award-winning, high-quality sweet and dry wines, hard ciders, and wine seltzers. Regardless of your palette, you are sure to find something you will enjoy.
When visiting, guests can experience the tasting room, tour the Hazlitt’s large production facility and/ or hike the neighboring trail that weaves through the historic Widmer vineyard. Visitors can enjoy their wine in the main tasting room, out on the patio or in the grassy outdoor picnic area. It is a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that is family and pet friendly … and guests even receive freshly popped popcorn with each tasting! Wine slushies are also available daily along with a selection of seasonal snack baskets which include a changing roundup of local goodies, charcuterie, and other perfect pairings.
Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars is open year-round for tastings and tours. Visit their website for current hours, events, and specials. It is also part of the Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail, where visitors can purchase a digital passport to receive a discount on their tasting and wine purchases. Known by many names over the years and most commonly as “the hotel restaurant,” this iconic community staple is nestled right on Main Street. At the center of this historic hotel are the dining rooms and bar space, now known as The Social. Owners Kevin and Leeann Barton of Barton Hospitality, Inc. have completely revamped these spaces. After a 14-month renovation, The Social Restaurant & Taproom in the historic Naples Hotel opened its doors in September 2022.
The Bartons fell in love with the history, elegance, and décor of the space immediately. They say, “We stumbled upon the space pre-COVID and knew we wanted to be a part of it. When it closed its doors, we knew the community felt it and we were passionate about bringing ‘the hotel’ back to the community. It was serendipitous when we met Tom and Destiny, the owners of the hotel, who were looking for restaurant proprietors to move in. We’re so glad they chose us and gave us the opportunity to serve the community.”
Upon entrance, guests are immediately transported to another time. Iconic in its own right, the “Gatsby Lounge” features geometric stylized designs streamlined with timeless glass rod sconces, perfectly complimenting the taproom. The Gatsby provides a more casual, intimate space to sit down, relax, and “get social” than the formal dining rooms, though it remains more elegant than the taproom.
The Taproom had the largest renovation during the restaurant remodel. Revealing the hotel’s expansive and rich history as layers and years were peeled back for restoration, the process included removing an entire wall to open up the taproom and replacing lighting fixtures with new art deco sconces to lean into the nostalgic 1920s flair while complimenting the back bar’s original vintage lighting. A new thirty foot mahogany bar steals the show in the taproom, highlighting one of the area’s oldest back bars.
With two formal dining rooms, guests peruse
a menu of classic steak and seafood options created by Head Chef, TJ Hess. Originally from Hammondsport, NY, Hess’ vast barbecue experience, butchery knowledge, and passion for flavor allow him to put his own spin on the classics. The new menu includes some locally sourced ingredients, such as local grass-fed Black Angus Beef, Flour City squid ink pasta, and Pleasant Valley Marsal for Hess’ famous chicken marsala.
The Social is the perfect spot to unwind with a specialty drink after a day of exploration. Hosting an expansive liquor list, including bourbons, tequilas and scotch, mixologists impress with the signature drink list focusing on classics including Manhattans, Boulevardiers, Negronis and Martinis. As one of the only places in the area with Prosecco on tap, the brunch game is strong here and served every Sunday with bottomless mimosas and the best Bloody Mary in town!
Other special events include dinner pairings with wine, bourbon, tequila and craft beers, and acoustic Open Jam nights that bring back music the hotel was once known for hosting.
The Social hopes to tap into the après-ski community, as winter months are long and the ski season cannot be beat in the Naples area. Working in collaboration with the Hotel owners, The Social offers stay and dine packages and room service to guests staying in the hotel, along with special discounts when guests book event blocks. With the team effort between the Naples Hotel and The Social, there’s no doubt “The Hotel” is back in its glory.
Caruso’s Café was established in August 2020 after a summer of hard work, resulting in a newly-renovated space that was once a local hub called The Grainery. Mark and Jodi Caruso, owners of Caruso’s Café, make quite the team, sharing a passion for great food, family, and serving the community.
Jodi is a certified yoga teacher and Mark is a carpenter, and both worked in those professions until March 2020, when the COVID pandemic transformed everyone’s work lives. Along with their four children, Sequoia, Willow, Carmella, and River, Jodi and Mark held fast to their vision, worked tirelessly, incorporated local artists, farmers, and bakers, and made their vision come to fruition.
Jodi and Mark are no strangers to serving the Naples community. Over the past twenty-two years, they have organized, led, and raised money for the American Cancer Society, Naples Cub Scouts, Hospeace House, Trinity Church, and numerous other organizations. You can find them helping the community in any way they can, through food, fundraising, donations, or even running over to fix a leaking faucet.
It’s important to them that Caruso’s Café become a place to serve not just food but also compassion, empathy, and acceptance. Caruso’s Café is the crossroads of food, friends, and coffee. Nourishing the community through great food, conversations, and organic fairtrade coffee makes the Carusos happy.
While raising their four children, they agreed not to serve their children dyes, high fructose corn syrup, artificial ingredients, or nitrates, so you won’t find any of those in any of the food they serve in the café. They offer a wide variety of lunch and breakfast items, including many gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan items.
Mark and Jodi are grateful for their family, friends, employees, and patrons. This summer, they celebrate their third year in business, sending a huge THANK YOU to everyone for helping them nourish their community!
Opened in 2021, The Old School Cafe is newer to the Naples area, owned by Trish Asher and Joe Scardilla, who also run the Brown Hound Downtown in the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester.
Asher and Scardilla bought the building, a 150-yearold schoolhouse, in 2020, and spent the next year renovating it into a coffeehouse, bakery, café, and bar. The couple lives in South Bristol and wanted to invest their time and efforts in nearby Naples, as this vibrant community offered an opportunity to join the booming craft brewing, agribusiness, and recreation growth occurring in the Finger Lakes.
The Old School Cafe retains the historic roots of the building, with a vintage educational theme throughout. A focus on old school building techniques, woodworking, and craftsmanship add to the unique interior and cozy atmosphere.
Offerings include Italian espresso drinks, American coffee, homespun baked goods, a creative brunchy menu and a full bar! Service is casual and quick, with guests ordering food and soft drinks at the front counter and alcohol from the bar and orders arriving shortly, hot and fresh, at a pickup window. The space is family friendly and welcoming to locals and visitors alike!

As summer turns to autumn, days lengthen, and leaves begin to fall, it is harvest time in Western NY. In Naples, that means the grape harvest. On September 23rd and 24th, 2023, the town of 2,400 burgeons to welcome tens of thousands of visitors from the Finger Lakes region and beyond for its iconic annual Naples Grape Festival.
Touted “The Best Festival in the Finger Lakes,” the Naples Grape Festival “brings fun, laughter, and smiles

to one and all.” Combining the finest of local wineries, cuisine, and artisans, as well as local, regional, and national music acts, the festival’s sights, sounds, tastes, and smells keep visitors coming back year after year. It raises crucial funds for the Naples Historical Society, which preserves the town’s rich history, and for the Naples Rotary Club, which helps create a bright future for the community.
The Grape Festival has a rich history dating back to 1874, when it began as an agricultural fair. According to festival organizers, grapes were first grown in Naples in 1848, and the first wine cellar was the Naples Valley Wine Company, established in 1854. In the 1940s, the festival took a hiatus due to World War II and the decline in the area’s grape production. The Naples Historical Society reintroduced the festival in 1961, drawing crowds including national celebrities such as Paul Harvey and Robert Kennedy. In 1971, unruly crowds caused the
festival’s cancellation again. Then, in 1989, to celebrate Naples’ bicentennial, the Grape Festival returned, benefiting the Naples Historical Society and the Naples Rotary Club. The festival hasn’t slowed down since.
The festival celebrates the Naples Valley grape harvest as well as the uniqueness of the Naples community and its hard-working, creative, friendly residents. Over the years, the festival has included parades, carnivals, street dances, and grape-stomping, as well as the arts and crafts, local cuisine, and beverages that round out its annual traditions.
One of the most popular annual highlights is the “World’s Greatest Grape Pie Contest” on Saturday, Sept. 23rd on the Memorial Town Hall side front lawn. According to festival organizers, “Grape pies were created in the 1950s and credited to longtime Naples resident Irene Bouchard.” Contestants enter 100% homemade grape pies Saturday morning for anonymous
judging. Contest winners receive money, a plaque, and of course, the year’s bragging rights.
The Grape Festival also hosts its extraordinarily popular wine tasting area, the Brahm-Moore Craft Beverage Garden on the Festival grounds, featuring regional wines, craft brewers, and distilleries of the Finger Lakes region. ID is required and guests pay admission ($15/one ticket or two for $25) to experience all available tastings. Presale tickets are available beginning Sept 15th. Sealed bottles of wine are available for purchase at each winery’s table. Visitors may save purchases at the Valet Service just outside the beverage garden, so they may enjoy the festival and pick up their purchases as they leave.
Live music features prominently at the Naples Grape Festival, with original acts from across the Finger Lakes

region and beyond throughout the weekend. For the full music lineup as it develops, visit naplesgrapefest.org. The year’s weekend of diverse, energetic music will surely satisfy all.
High-caliber local artisans showcase their wares in one of the region’s largest vendor areas at the Memorial Town Hall and Naples High School. There will be something for everyone at this festival.
Traffic into and out of this cozy town gets a bit hairy during the Grape Festival, so organizers recommend arriving in the village before 11am to avoid traffic jams. Public parking is available at Hazlitt’s Lake Niagara Lane location. A free shuttle runs throughout the festival. Handicapped parking is available off Academy Street on the north side of Naples High School.
John French, of the Naples Rotary, says they will surely add special events to the festival as September nears, and visitors should check the website or Facebook page for updated information at naplesgrapefest.org and facebook.com/naplesgrapefestival.

Haven Vacation Rental Management has a new home at 112 North Main Street in Naples! The bigger location offers founder Amy Merrill more room to operate in as she continues to manage vacation rentals for owners who either don’t live in the area or don’t want to manage the properties themselves. These properties are available for guests looking for a local spot to stay and enjoy all Naples has to offer.
Inspired by working with clients who owned second homes, Merrill created the company to manage the properties so that the owners could spend more time enjoying them and less time dealing with the hassle of maintaining them. Many were often selling their second properties because they personally weren’t using them
enough, and by the time they finally got to, most of their vacations were devoted to maintenance.
That’s where Haven Vacation Rental Management comes in. Merrill handles the maintenance of the properties between guests, fulfilling a need in the Naples area not only for vacation property owners, but in providing vacation rentals where visitors can stay. It’s a perfect solution for travel to the Finger Lakes, encouraging guests to stay locally. Hospitality technicians are also provided, going over every detail and providing cleaning services for vacation rentals between uses.
Haven Vacation Rental Management is a smaller operation, which ensures personal and direct involvement with renters and property owners. Encounter hospitality at its finest with Amy Merrill today and book your stay with Haven Vacation Rental Management! Located in the center of town, the historic Naples Hotel has been a landmark on Main Street for over 120 years. Owners Tom and Destiny Salviski purchased the property in early 2020 and have been rolling up their sleeves to restore and maintain this timeless gem ever since. Built in 1895 by Jefferson Brown, the original brick building is the oldest operating hotel in Ontario County. While the property has been maintained to showcase its history, it also offers modern amenities that guests have come to appreciate.
As an experienced real estate investor and developer, Tom Salviski has transformed many historic buildings throughout Upstate New York and was excited for the opportunity to improve this property. He and his wife have spent the last two years focusing on muchneeded renovations such as plumbing and electrical upgrades, paint, carpets, replacing drywall and adding new furnishings.
The Naples Hotel partnered with Kevin and Leeann Barton, of Barton Hospitality, to operate the restaurant and bars located on the lower levels of the building. The team collectively performed extensive renovations to the space, including a new commercial kitchen and significant upgrades to the taproom and dining areas. One particular highlight is the 30-foot mahogany bar that sits where the old bar used to be. Retro flooring and tin ceilings make for a nice experience in the taproom.
Featuring 10 guest suites, an on-site restaurant, bar and private event space, the hotel is the perfect location for those visiting the Naples area. Each suite has its own bedroom, bathroom, and living room with new carpet, new windows and even working fireplaces. The modern Victorian aesthetic is comfortable and welcoming, featuring high-quality antique furniture, velvet fabric, damask wallpaper, and gold accents. Many rooms even have themes unique to the Naples area, which adds
to the ambiance. Two suites have full kitchen facilities, providing a comfortable place for long-term guests to feel at home.
This historic, boutique hotel features many modern luxuries that guests experience at a traditional hotel, but also includes many of the quaint, personal touches that are usually exclusive to a bed and breakfast. Here, online reservations, contactless keypad entry and Smart TVs are complimented by handwritten notes, specialty coffee, fresh fruit, and even local chocolates.
If the walls could talk, they would have many stories to share. From memories shared by past owners to the famous speeches held on the balcony to the unexpected “haunted history,” this hotel is bursting with character, charm, and beauty. Whether you are visiting Naples for a wedding, festival or taking part in one of the many outdoor activities, the Naples Hotel is a great spot for an overnight getaway with plenty to do and much to see –and only a short drive from Rochester, Syracuse, and the surrounding areas.
In addition to the multitude of summer and fall events in Naples, the town also offers guests many things to do year-round. Positioned between Hunt Hollow and Bristol, skiing is only 15 minutes away in the winter months and the popular Naples Creek is a destination for fishermen, especially in early spring when trout season unfolds. In between, visitors can check out a variety of new breweries, cafés, vineyards, and live music – all of which bring many visitors to the area. Regardless of the reason you’re here, the Naples Hotel is the perfect accommodation for your stay.

Bristol Valley Theater, located in the heart of Naples, NY has just announced their 2023 summer season line up. A must-see for any theater lover, Bristol Valley Theater is truly the “crown jewel of Naples, NY.” This season promises to offer a mix of beloved classics, comedy, thrillers, and a newly produced never-before-seen show.
According to Executive Artistic Director Richard Amelius, “We try to do things that are unique and not like the others. If you are a fan of intelligent dramas, then Driving Miss Daisy is for you. If you love classic musicals, Little Women might be for you; if you like thrillers, Misery
is good to see. Professionally, Magical Thinking is making its world premiere. Double Trouble is a two-person musical. It’s very funny and there’s lots of singing and dancing in that.”
Bristol Valley Theater is committed to showing an assortment of six plays and musicals between the months of June and August, and each production runs for two weeks. This award-winning live theater boasts one world premiere play every season, which keeps their loyal fan base returning year after year.
As one of Naples’ finest tourist attractions, Bristol Valley Theater draws in approximately $1.5 million in revenue annually due to their selection of top-notch talent within the charm and allure of small-town America. There is something more approachable and accessible about being able to bring your family and loved ones to this type of theater, without the hustle and bustle of a busy city. A combination of big city talent located within the charming town of Naples can be enough to make the drive from wherever your location happens to be.
“Most of the actors come from New York City, and we hold a local audition here. It is a professional theater and the only one in Ontario County. It really does run the entire spectrum. If there is local talent, we try to use that and that has a special place in the community,” adds Amelius. Set in a converted church, Bristol Valley Theater offers stadium seating so you will be able to enjoy every minute of your show, no matter where you happen to sit.

On April 1st, the Naples Rotary Club will be hosting its 62nd Annual Rainbow Trout Derby. With over 300 competitors in 2022, the Trout Derby has hopes that even more will sign up for this year.
The derby consists of two different groups: the traditional group, in which contestants catch the fish and then take them to the fire hall to be weighed; and the catch-and-release group, in which contestants catch a fish, take a picture of it, and then throw it back into the creek.
To aid the judges, pictures taken by competitors in the catch-and-release division include a ruler and scale to measure the length and weight of the fish.
According to committee member Micah Moore, the traditional method has been the way that fish weights have been recorded for years, however, the catch-and-release method has been growing in popularity more recently.
There are also numerous divisions within the traditional group, including a men’s division, women’s division, a girls division, a seniors’ division for contestants over the age of 65, and a grand prize for the largest overall catch.
On average, the winner of each division usually catches a fish between 8 to 10 pounds in order to secure a win. Last year, the winners only averaged 7.5 pounds per fish due to a late ice melt that delayed the fishes’ annual move from Canandaigua Lake to Naples Creek.
Looking to sign up for this year’s Trout Derby? Signs up will be available at Sutton’s Inn in the village of Naples during the month of March. Costs will be $5 for kids and seniors, and $10 for adults.
All proceeds go directly to the Naples Rotary Club and will be put towards helping out the Naples community. For more info, contact Micah Moore at (585) 704-5601.

In the summer of 2019, The Landmark Society of Western NY (LSWNY) completed a historic resources survey of the Village of Naples. This project was funded through Preserve New York and Community Foundation grants to the Village of Naples.
Recommendations from the survey project included the creation of three National Register historic districts including (1) Central Naples Historic District, (2) Naples South Main Street Historic District, and (3) Naples Viniculture Historic District, as well as an individual listing of Fairview Cemetery.
In February 2020, the Naples Village Board charged the Historic District Committee (HDC) to carry out the process of completing the required applications, as well as identifying the resources to support this initiative. Grants were applied for and awarded from the Preservation League of NYS and the Rochester Area Community Foundation to fund a consultant to prepare the substantial documentation required. LSWNY was engaged for this purpose. These grants, along with local contributions, covered the full cost of preparing the applications. No community tax dollars were required.
The application process involved an exterior, detailed review of properties within each district to determine which were contributing, and which not contributing, based upon national register standards. Contributing properties become eligible for specific benefits. Information about benefits and tax credit programs can be found on the NYS Historic Preservation Office website at: https://parks.ny.gov/shpo/tax-credit-programs/
After much research and documentation, all three districts and Fairview Cemetery were listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places in 2022 and forwarded to the National Register. As of December 2022, the South Main Street Historic District, Viniculture District and Fairview Cemetery have all been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A review of the Central Naples District is currently underway by the National Register.
Once all four districts have been approved on the National Register, the HDC will begin researching preparations for permanent signage, including verbiage, locations, costs, approvals, and grant support opportunities. Printed materials and permanent signage are planned to provide visitors and residents with information about our Historic Naples.

As co-owner Jenny Wells says, “Stop by and step back in time” at the Olde Country Store and More! This quaint store sits between Naples, Cohocton, and Wayland, about five miles to the heart of each of the three towns. The store is known and celebrated for its German roots and its enormous candy wall! This main attraction consists of 189 bins with over 400 kinds of candies. Aside from tons of bulk candy and candy bars to choose from, this unique store carries various local foods and products, such as honey, maple syrup, and cheese. Crafts, art, gifts, and Finger Lakes-themed apparel from local artisans and vendors are also available.
The mission of the Olde Country Store and More is to stay as local as possible – with a German twist! The German
roots of the store stem from Jenny’s family. Jenny and her sister, Denise, were born in Germany when their father Jeff, a Naples native deployed with the Army, met their German-born mother. Jeff relocated to Naples in 2014 and Jenny and Denise relocated in 2015, with the idea to open a store that combined their roots in both Germany and the Finger Lakes. Jenny, Denise, and Jeff opened the Olde Country Store and More on July 4th, 2015.
The family’s German ancestors’ handmade ornaments gave them the idea to import glass ornaments from Germany year-round for their customers to purchase. The towns surrounding the store are also home to many families of German descent. Because of these historical aspects, the store has a corner dedicated to imported products from Germany. The German chocolate is definitely a fan favorite!
You’ve probably seen the green heart with the eleven etched Finger Lakes as a bumper sticker in the area. But did you know that Jeff designed that logo?
When the family first wanted to open a store in the area to sell local products, they had a local woodworker create a plaque displaying the heart design. Customers inquiring about purchasing the plaque sparked the idea to copyright the design. Now, The Green Heart of the Finger Lakes® is found on products such as t-shirts and glassware at the Olde Country Store and More as well as at over 40 wholesale partners in the Finger Lakes region!
Trademarking the design came as a recommendation from the president of the Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance. They are proud to see it distributed and loved throughout the area as a symbol of the Finger Lakes and its beauty. Learn more about this story at https://www.GreenHeartFLX.com.
The Olde Country Store and More is open Wednesday through Sunday between 10 AM and 4 PM from March through the end of December each year. While the store was opened by Jenny, Denise, and Jeff, the family patriarch signed the store over to the two sisters in 2022. The sisters are determined to open the store up to more local vendors and customers.
The building The Olde Country Store and More is located in received a historical marker in fall 2021. There has been a store on the property since 1848, and the building today was built in 1873! While it has always had two stories, only the bottom floor has been open to customers since they opened in 2015. Now, they are in the process of moving gifts and creating spaces for vendors to display their products on the top floor!
If you are interested in displaying products at The Olde Country Store and More this spring or summer, reach out to Jenny and Denise. Stop by the store to check out a variety of local products today at 2 University Avenue in North Cohocton, NY.

Located in Naples, NY, Wilcox Do It Center is known as the most reliable store for anything a handyman could need (and what you didn’t know you needed). Friendly sales associates will guide you through tackling your next to-do project and home improvement challenge. Formerly a fifth-generation family business, they pride themselves on serving their local community and surrounding areas.
Wilcox Do It Center is a one-of-a-kind retail supercenter. Originally created by Albert H. Wilcox as a sawmill and lumber business in 1866 in Cohocton, NY, the store has grown rapidly over the last century to also service Naples, Prattsburgh, South Bristol, Avoca, Pulteney, Atlanta, and Middlesex due to their dependable products and trusted name. Their customers know if you cannot find an item at your local Wilcox store, you can find it on their website, which offers a variety of 67,000 available product options, along with free expert advice.
“We have knowledgeable and friendly staff; we’re your local hometown hardware lumber and more store, and we pride ourselves on good products and good prices,” says new owner, Monica Zeh. In January 2020, she and Jeremy Fields took over the location, purchasing the building and expanding all of their departments, including adding an addition on the building itself.
New offerings include an auto supply department and she shed offerings such as candles, wine glasses, aloe socks and décor. Around Christmas time there are a number of holiday items, and in the summer, Wilcox’s outdoor center features solar lights, grills, fire pits,
umbrellas, and garden décor.
Wilcox remains your friendly, local hardware supercenter and continues to strive for ways to service the local community. A potential project currently in the works will give customers the opportunity to rent equipment and supplies if they do not wish to purchase them directly.
“We have been planning to expand into tool rental since we bought the place,” Zeh said. Rentals will not be limited to hand tools: “We’ll have sheet rock lifts, soil compactors, and jack hammers, to name a few. It’ll have a variety of options, and we are adding more all the time as we prepare to open this department.”
While this project has not yet been completed, Monica Zeh and Jeremy Fields are always looking to expand at the Naples location while maintaining the trusted legacy of the Wilcox family name customers have relied upon for years.
Conveniently located on South Main Street in Naples, NY, Wilcox offers everything and more when it comes to home improvement and renovations. You can visit them on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/wilcoxlumber or their official website at: https://wilcox.doitbest.com/.

prosthodontics, veneers, 3D imaging, and more. Visiting the dentist can be a painful experience for your teeth (and your wallet), but it doesn’t have to be. By taking care of oral health properly, you can prevent bigger health problems and more unwanted expenses down the road.
The bi-annual trip to the dentist can be a dreaded and nerve-wracking experience; so many patients put off for tomorrow what could be done today. Naples Valley Dental is here to help put your mind at ease. Their longstanding history is a testament to their successful career in the Naples community.
While it has small-town charm, Naples Valley Dental utilizes unique advanced technology equipment to make every visit as convenient and painless as possible.
Dr. Wayne Chanler describes his interest in cutting edge technology, and how it separates Naples Valley Dental from other dental practices.
For example, they have the CAD/CAM crown fabrication system. The software for this system allows a virtual impression (or a scan) to be taken, so this means no messy, bad-tasting materials are used in the process.
Historic 45th Anniversary While Honoring Founder Dr. Wayne Chanler’s Legacy“I have been to dozens and dozens of dentists throughout my lifetime, as well as for my children. We have never felt so welcomed and cared for at any other dentist! Not even a pediatric dentist has been so wonderful! The staff here made a plan with me and began executing it within a week!!! I am TERRIFIED of dentist offices. Instead of treating me poorly or judging my fears, they were extra attentive & caring!! I will NEVER leave here!!! My kids and boyfriend love them too!!! TYSM Naples Valley Dental!!!”
Then using the software, a computer-generated crown is created, and the dentist can virtually check the overall fit before sending it to the milling machine where a porcelain block is cut to a perfectly-fitting crown. The crown is then shaded to match the patient’s dentition and placed in a special oven for a final glaze and a flawless finish. This is all done in about an hour, thus saving the patient from a temporary crown being placed, a wait time of up to two weeks and a second appointment just for their permanent crown to be placed. It is a really cool system and the patient can even see their crown being milled if they are interested in how it all works. The feedback from the patients has all been positive, as they love having this time-saving option for their treatment and their new crown is functional and beautiful.
They also have one of the most technologically advanced combination Panoramic/Cone Beam x-ray machines. It not only captures high quality panoramic views of a patient’s dentition but allows for 3D imaging. All at much lower radiation levels than previous x-ray equipment of the past. 3D imaging (which permits views from several angles and gives clarification of bone structure, root positions, fractures, and allows

Dr. Wayne Chanler started his dental career as a captain in the Navy, working for the public health service. In 1976, he was intrigued by the beauty of the Finger Lakes and fell in love with the area. He moved from the big city and continued his dental career in Cohocton, NY, working for Project Reach with the Appalachian Region Commission. Just two years later, he realized his dream of opening his own dental practice, right on Main Street in Naples. Dr. Chanler has always expressed that his practice is not just here to fix teeth, but here to build long-lasting relationships with his patients and the Naples community. Dr. Chanler’s generous and trusting soul is a wonderful characteristic that has made for a very successful business in this tight-knit community. The Naples Valley Dental Team was built on this foundation and continues to adhere to the founder’s love of his work and the close relationships with his patients and his community.
Dr. Gabriel Murphy was born in Valparaiso and raised in Antofagasta, Chile. Dr. Murphy participated in an exchange program and was placed in Phoenix, Arizona. After having a great experience in the USA, he knew he wanted to return to work here, raise his family and have the opportunity to expand his education and career. Dr. Murphy, with his wife, Kate, and his three beautiful children, now enjoy year-round activities in the Finger Lakes region.
Dr. Alexandra Symans was born and raised in Patton, Pennsylvania. After high school, Alex majored in Biology with a minor in Chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She received her DMD from Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University in Philadelphia. Dr. Symans believes the mouth is the gateway to the body, and strives to improve the overall health of her patients by improving their oral health. She finds the dental field extremely rewarding, especially seeing the effect that a restored smile can bring to her patients’ confidence and well-being. When not thinking about teeth, Dr. Symans enjoys spending time with her husband, Chris, her son, Joshua, and her rescue dog, Cooper. Chris and Alex stay active with hiking and boating around Canandaigua Lake.
“The staff is professional, caring, and personable. The work is second to none. They even went out of their way (which they absolutely didn’t have to) to work with me when my insurance refused to. I’ll never be looking for a new dentist again. I’d give 100 stars if I could.”
measurements to be taken) allows for precision dental work to be done. This type of imaging is considered, according to the American Dental Association, the standard of care for a root canal treatment. Of course, with that in mind, this is of utmost importance to Naples Valley Dental. Those type of images are helpful as they can see and locate problems not seen in a regular image. It can even help in other areas as well like detecting cancerous lesions. Not many practices have 3D imaging available. If there is something suspicious in the 2D x-ray, you can take a 3D image for clarification on the problem.
The last highlighted technology used at Naples Valley Dental is the Ultrasonic Unit. This machine allows more root canals to be done in-house. It has applications to gain access to the canal opening, helps with removing more organic tissue and bacteria, shaping and the obturation of canals, and can remove materials and obstructions with ease.
Dr. Chanler emphasizes that he has always been invested in technology. He feels it is important in providing the best care to his patients.
The importance of proper oral hygiene can often be overlooked, but in so many cases, bacteria that starts in the mouth due to poor dental care can enter the bloodstream and work its way throughout the body. Gum disease has long been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and various respiratory ailments. Chanler says, “Your mouth is the portal to the rest of your body. If your mouth is healthy, you have a better chance of being healthy everywhere else. Studies have shown what can happen with periodontal disease, and we have always been prevention-minded; we try to get people to realize you must be healthy all over.”
Dr. Chanler brings to his team a lifetime’s worth of professional ability and dentistry. In April, the practice celebrates its 45th anniversary in Naples while honoring Dr. Chanler, who dedicated his life to cultivating relationships within the Naples Community. He says, “I feel that my legacy is going to be carried on; I have a great and dedicated team.”

Mean the World.
Hospeace House is a two-bedroom comfort care facility in Naples, NY that provides care for individuals in the end stages of life. This facility first opened in 2001 as a four-bed medical facility but transformed into a two-bed community-based facility in 2018.
While nurses from a hospice agency through the University of Rochester come in routinely to attend to residents’ medical needs, seven staff members and over forty volunteers take care of residents so they can truly feel at home. Volunteers and staff members read to residents, play games, provide a listening ear, and attend to their needs. Volunteers work four-hour shifts between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., and staff members provide overnight care. Hospeace House provides all meals and adheres to all medical orders.
The first floor of the facility is for residents while the second floor is dedicated to family members. This space includes bedrooms, a kitchen, and a living space. Hospeace House staff and volunteers feel fortunate to have these accommodations, as family from all over the country can come and visit their loved ones.
As a community-based facility, Hospeace House runs strictly on donations. Many donations come from fundraisers from families and friends who want to
honor or memorialize residents, as well as from local businesses and other caring people in Naples and the surrounding communities.
When asked about what makes Hospeace House unique, Director of Operations Theresa says it’s the volunteers. She says, “Their hearts are truly amazing with everything that they do.” From caring for residents and their families to cleaning living spaces to tending to the gardens, they know the outcome of each resident’s stay and continue to volunteer their time and love.
Hospeace House will hold The Wildflower Challenge in the spring. This fundraiser involves two entities matching up to $60,000 worth of donations! In addition, Hospeace House will host a Monte Carlo Night in mid-May, at which anyone can buy a ticket to enjoy a night of gambling and prizes, benefitting the comfort care facility.
Hospeace House hopes to build up its volunteer and donation base as well as open a second residence to benefit the community. However, volunteering and donating aren’t the only ways to get involved. There is always a need for assistance with event planning, gardening, data entry, organizing, and more! If you are interested in helping the Hospeace House, reach out to Theresa today and learn more at HospeaceHouse.org.
Hospeace House is excited to announce that we have obtained matching grants from The Wildflower Foundation and an anonymous donor to match up to $60,000 of community donations. Your donation now will help Hospeace House more than ever! Reach out today and learn how you can help Hospeace House through a monetary contribution, donating your time, sharing your expertise within our several committees, or attending one of our amazing events!
We are a Community Comfort Care home, serving and served by the surrounding communities. At Hospeace House, there is never a charge for residents and families for the care provided. All of our services are funded by donations from the business community, foundations, and individuals.
