DID YOU KNOW? Valentine’s Day symbols like heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, Cupid shooting his arrow and bouquets of roses are ubiquitous come February. Each of those symbolizes is meant to signify the love individuals have for their significant others, but perhaps no Valentine’s Day image is more symbolic of love than doves. According to LiveScience.com, doves have been a symbol of love since the Middle Ages, when many people believed birds chose their mates on Valentine’s Day. But the history of doves and their affiliation with love dates back even further and can be traced to the days of Greek mythology. Aphrodite is the goddess of love in Greek mythology, and she is often depicted as being surrounded by doves. Doves’ own traits also have helped them become symbols of love, as LiveScience.com notes that male doves help their female partners incubate and tend to their young, bolstering their image as caring, loving birds.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Love in A e Right Places
Finding
BY A M A N DA D U D E K
I
t was the summer of 2018, more than an entire year before the word “pandemic,” became a part of our daily vocabulary. One woman, yours truly, was about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime, changing careers to pursue the dream of writing full-time. I expected it to be exciting. I expected it to be challenging, full of new experiences and opportunities. It has been all that and more. What I never expected, however, is how much writing the Genesee Valley Penny Saver’s weekly Hometown Stories would teach me about love. • Take Helen Serafi ne, for example. Helen is the owner of the Angry Rooster Café in Caledonia, a business from which she continuously serves the community around her. Last year alone, she hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for area friends in need. She also created the Little Food Pantry in the alley next to her café where people can come at any time to select or drop off food items. Still, Helen saw more needs to meet.
• In Brockport, the Community Hygiene Bank (CHB), which has served the area since March 2017, became even more essential with the advent of Covid-19. The CHB provides personal hygiene and household cleanliness items to struggling families and individuals while offering prayer for all those who ask. Even when cleaning items became scarce, CHB continued to offer them at their events. In its new home at Jubilee Christian Church in Brockport, CHB has grown from serving 11 families to now serving approximately 150 families. Providing for one’s neighbors: that is love. • Further south, Tina Markle, founder of Your Centers Dansville, goes above and beyond for those around her. Your Centers Day Respite Program specializes in helping individuals requiring managed long-term care. However, the doors are open to everyone and serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Tina is a support for local elderly, disabled, and shut-in individuals, particularly during Covid-19. She personally delivered groceries to many people who could not come out and shop for themselves, often responding to calls from morning until evening. Recently, Tina opened a clothing “store” to help struggling families. She also organized a collection of goods for flooded communities last fall. Giving freely of yourself to those around you: that is love.
A gift tree, offered by Helen during the holidays, presented neighbors with the opportunity to play Santa Claus to others during the recent holiday season. Helen has also established (and continues to support) a “coat tree” as well as a container of winter wear such as hats, scarves, and gloves in front of her restaurant. As her sister, Mary Serafi ne put it, “If someone needs something, she is there. They don’t have to ask; she just does it.” Serving those in need: that is love. • Further west in Batavia, meet Senior Wishes. Th is organization serves a vulnerable and too often forgotten segment of our population: our elderly friends, family, and neighbors. According to Wendy Miller Backman, Senior Wishes Executive Director, “Senior Wishes was created to recognize that our aging seniors still have things they want to do, places they want to go, or people they want to see. We transform those dreams into a reality.” Senior Wishes has granted many hundreds of requests. For Leonard, an 81-year old Army Veteran who hasn’t been on a boat in 20 years, a Senior Wish meant one more time holding a fishing pole in his hand and feeling the lake breezes on his face. For Charles, a WWII Army Veteran who had wanted to see his cousin in Oakland, CA for some time, a Senior Wish meant a very special reunion after 10 years apart. Finally, for 89-year-old WWII Veteran Marco, who has been a fan of the L.A. Dodgers for as long as he can remember, a Senior Wish meant a trip to Cleveland to watch his beloved Dodgers play the Indians. Caring for our elderly: that is love.

• Sometimes, love is so powerful, it creates a miracle. The shutdown across all New York schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic had prevented St. Agnes School of Avon from holding three of its major fundraisers as the 2019-2020 school year was coming to a close. On April 27th in the face of a budget deficit, it seemed likely the recommendation going forward on May 8th would be for the school’s closure. “The next day, we formed a task force, and on April 29th, we put up a GoFundMe,” Principal Jensen explained. “Within three days, we had raised $100,000 thanks to community members, alumni, current and former parents of students, teachers, and even students, which was so sweet.” On May 6th, just ten short days after the St. Agnes School stood on the brink of closure, Father Michael presented the Bishop with a letter recommending that Avon’s St. Agnes School remain open. “The community rallied around our school,” Jensen said. “Our drive encouraged others to be ‘a light in the darkness…’ they lit up our sky!” Preserving local treasures like St. Agnes School: that is love. These represent only a handful of the stories that have poured out from across our region and into our pages over the past three years. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to recognize that our communities are fi lled to overflowing with generous people and organizations. Love may not always make the news, but it makes our towns incredible places to be.

S E V RA Hope for Humanity I want to give a shout out to a very special citizen that helped me in a dire time of need! This Friday morning after the dump of good ol’ Rochester snow, my car got stuck at the end of my drive way! I panicked because I had to get my prescription at Wegmans. While I was rocking my car back and forth, a friendly knock was heard on my window! There was a young man dressed in what appeared to be orange fur, cat like ears, and a beard. He jokingly said "Never fear! Snarf Maxx is here!" and he held up a shovel! As I sat in my warm car, he began shoveling the snow beneath my tires! And he wasn't bothered or distressed! He just began singing, "I'm the best!" and kept at it! He looked weird with his fur clothes, but good people are good people! No matter what they look like! Then he walked to the front of my car and told me to go in reverse and I was out! He waved goodbye and said "Enjoy the Wonderland!" This is a lesson to us all! Bless you Snarf Maxx! You are the best! Auto Help This past Saturday (2/5) driving was already an adventure given the recent big snowstorm and temperatures in the teens. Then, after shopping, our adventure factor really increased when we discovered that our car battery had died. Luckily, we were able to purchase a new one just a few doors down in the same Geneseo plaza at an Auto Plus Auto Parts Store. Mark at Auto Plus generously lent us his tool kit so we could complete the old/new battery swap. Many thanks for being there when we needed you! - The Bs
Common Concerns A couple of weeks ago a reader wrote about their frustration that 42% of survey respondents were unconcerned about climate change. Most of us want our lives back and are more concerned with getting Covid behind us. The volcanic eruption in Tonga will effect the climate in one day. Earth's climate has continually changed through the millennia. There is historical evidence of this. Most us are for innovations that will improve everyone's lives. The climate change New Green Deal makes the rich richer. I will believe these politicians are serious when I see wind and solar farms in view of the playgrounds of the wealthy. Currently, only the rural areas they don't see are marred by these eyesores. I love the planet. Let's get some real innovations all engineered in the USA.
We have Control To the person who claims that we cannot control the environment, here's a small list of the human impact on the environment that we can control: Not dumping millions of tons of oil into the ocean every time an oil rig bursts. Smokers actually throwing away their butts every time they are done so that birds do not use them as nesting material. Not flushing medicine down the toilet so that pharmaceuticals do not end up in our water. How about the amount of microplastic that is in the ocean that is currently being eaten by us because we eat things that eat the microplastic? Pretty sure we have control over that. Using more renewable resources than natural, and allowing our wonderful environment to do its natural thing instead of forcing accelerated climate change. Hey look: control! What you wrote makes you sound extremely uneducated. Please call up a science teacher from your local high school and ask them how you can help contribute to making our environment better.

Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways. A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people. Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette. Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch. Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money. Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time. Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 35-year-old white male who was a drug addict from the age of 14 until 32. You name it, I took it. About three years ago, I quit drugs and have lived a healthy lifestyle since. I do not drink alcohol, and I smoke one or two cigarettes a day. Three years ago, I was tested for hepatitis and was told the results were negative. About two weeks ago, I was tested and found to have hepatitis C. The results were “HCV RNA Quantitative real time PCR 8010 (high) and log 3.90 (high).” These results were given to me by a nurse without explanation other than to see a specialist. Further physician visits were denied by my insurance. I have no idea what this means, or what I need to do. I have no symptoms or discomfort at this time. What happens if this condition goes untreated? -- Anon. ANSWER: First of all, congratulations on quitting almost everything. That was the best thing you could have done for your health. Now you have to deal with a complication of drug use, particularly injection drug use: hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a slow-acting virus that affects the liver. The course of hepatitis C is variable. Some people have a very aggressive virus, which without treatment can cause permanent liver damage, ultimately leading to cirrhosis and sometimes cancer of the liver. Others have a much more benign course with no evidence of liver damage, even after many years with the virus. Your viral load, a measure of how much virus is in the blood, is fairly low. However, you absolutely should still go see a specialist. This is usually a hepatologist or infectious disease doctor, who has special expertise in treating hepatitis C. They will do additional blood testing, and probably a noninvasive scan of the liver to look for fibrosis, to determine whether there has been damage and the urgency of treatment. Treatment for hepatitis C is so good now (97% or more effective) and the side effects of the new drugs are so mild that most experts treat someone with even very benign disease. Treatment courses are sometimes shorter for people with mild disease and without scarring of the liver. Your insurance company is absolutely in the wrong to deny a visit with the specialist, and that decision needs to be appealed, preferably by your primary care doctor. In the meantime, continue to avoid alcohol, and do not take more than six regular strength (or four extra strength) Tylenol a day. You also should be sure to have immunizations to hepatitis A and B, if you are not already immune.

We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
ORAL HEALTH AND THE SENSE OF TASTE The human mouth has over 10,000 taste buds, located in the papillae, the tiny bumps primarily found on the surface of the tongue. Each papilla has hundreds of tastes buds, which contain the taste receptors. Saliva carries taste substances to the receptors and throughout the mouth. The sense of taste is a vital part of the body’s nutritional intake process. A loss of taste is usually caused by one of two primary disorders: parageusia, a changed perception of taste quality (diminished), or phantogeusia, a perceived constant taste present such as metallic, bitter, or salty. A dental health professional can evaluate whether the taste loss is the result of an oral health issue or an indication of other underlying medical issues.
At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our philosophy is not only to treat dental needs, but more importantly, to educate our patients on all aspects of their oral care. To this end, our mission is to provide open and free communication and the highest standard of care in an environment of health, mutual understanding, and respect. We offer complete general dental care at 6 Batavia City Centre, for the healthiest, sunniest smiles possible. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment. P. S. Taste buds regenerate themselves approximately every ten days.

• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

DID YOU KNOW? According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Is a Part B Premium Cutback Coming? By now we know just how much our Social Security checks are going to be for this year, after the deductions for Part B. The average dollar increase is $92 per month for singles. The Part B deduction has gone up $21.60, mostly due to the price of the new Alzheimer’s drug, Aduhelm, for a total of $170 per month. The drug costs $56,000 per patient per year. And we’re all going to pay for it, whether we need it or not. The news now is that the price of that drug has been cut in half, to $28,200 per year, after pressure was brought to bear on the manufacturer when it was revealed that Medicare might not pay for it at all. Additional pressure came from doctors who were suspicious the drug didn’t actually work and who wanted their own tests run on it. Since it must be given via IV in the hospital or doctor’s office, it falls under Part B instead of the Part D drug plan. Hot off the press is a proposal that Medicare will cover the drug -but only for those in randomized controlled clinical trials that will settle once and for all the question about whether the drug actually works. They’ll likely have a decision on that proposal in April. And what of our Part B costs, given the lowered cost of Aduhelm? Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra ordered Medicare to look again at the premium we’re being charged for 2022. There is the smallest chance it might be lowered, which has never been done before. Last year it was estimated that our Part B premium would be $158.50 this year. If that $170 is cut back to that amount, it would net us an extra $11.50 per month. What shall we spend it on? (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Keep your tires ‘aired up’: For every 10 degree Fahrenheit change in outside tem perature, your tire’s inflation pressure w ill change by about 1 pound per square inch (psi). Im properly inflated tires can lead to poor traction, decreased control and skidding. • Slow ly accelerate and decelerate: Applying engine pow er slow ly to accelerate is the best m ethod for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Don’t try to get m oving in a hurry, and take extra care and tim e to-slow dow n w hen stopping. • Invest in a set of dedicated w inter tires for your vehicle: Winter tires are specifically designed to provide im proved traction in cold, snow y and icy conditions. Whether your vehicle is front, rear or all-w heel drive, w inter tires can offer an additional elem ent of perform ance to get you through those tricky w inter driving m onths. • Check your tread to beat the snow : Worn or insufficient tread can cause skidding during the w inter season, so it is im portant to m ake sure your tires are ready for the w inter conditions before hitting the road. A quick w ay to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are sm all raised bars that run in-betw een a tire’s tread blocks. When a tire’s tread is w orn dow n to these indicator bars, it’s tim e to change to a new set of tires. AUTOMOTIVE

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If your dog likes a treat of moistened dry food from time to time, use the water from cooking vegetables. It has a bit of flavor and some vitamins, too! * “A tip for banana peels: Dry until crispy and break into small pieces. Put in blender and blend to powder. Store in an airtight container to sprinkle around base of houseplants before watering. Orchids love them -- it’s great free fertilizer.” -- B.C. in New Hampshire * “Unmatched socks are handydandy cleaners and have so many uses. Keep one by the dryer to get all the lint off the trap. Shake it out or pop it into the wash when needed. * If you have lots of outdoor or feral cats in your area, here is some good advice, given to me by my grandmother: Start your car with a bang -- on the hood, that is. When the overnight temperature dips, cats know to find someplace that is wind-shielded and off the ground, and sometimes that means they will climb up into your engine area to hunker down. If your car starts while they’re there, they can be hurt or even killed. Give the hood a good knock to let a cat know to get out quick. -- JoAnn * “After you’ve cleaned out the gliders of your sliding-glass door, run over the parts with a little paraffin wax. It will protect the moving parts and quiet the door.” -- P.J. in Oregon * If you have trouble threading a needle because the fibers seem to go in all directions, here’s a tip from T.I. in Illinois: Stiffen the end of thread with hairspray before threading a needle.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than emphasize what you did, highlight what you plan to do. This means giving greater weight to the expertise that will translate into your new position. Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. All of the skills mentioned should be relevant to your career objective and not just added to pad the résumé. Therefore, unless your brief stint waiting tables exemplifies how you developed customer service skills, eliminate it.

Responsibilities include work orders, turns, painting and some lawn care. Experience in minor carpentry, plumbing and electrical required.
Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.

Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. EMPLOYMENT

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Is it possible to teach a cat to come when you call? I have a 2-year-old gray cat, Billy, who sometimes gets past my feet and runs out the door. I worry that he will get run over by a car or attacked by a coyote. He will look at me when I call, but that is it. -- Kelly in Fort Myers, Florida DEAR KELLY: You can teach cats to respond to certain commands, and calling them is one of those commands. I know that Billy can learn to do it, because he clearly recognizes your voice. He just doesn’t see the value in returning to you right away. So it’s important to help Billy “see” the value in returning when you call! You do this through training that uses positive reinforcement -- a favorite treat or food. Here’s how: * Come up with a noise that you can make just before Billy gets a treat or dinner. A whistle, a clucking noise, even a little song. * Just before you open his can of food or treat bag, make that noise. Do it at every feeding and treat time. * Set aside five minutes, twice a day, for reinforcement training. * During training, make the noise, wait for Billy to respond, then give him a treat. Back up a couple of feet and repeat. * Gradually increase the distance during each session until Billy comes running when you call. Once Billy associates that specific noise with a reward, he’ll come back every time you call. Make sure to always reward him when he comes, even if it’s just lots of praise. He’ll be far less likely to stay out if he escapes, and you’ll have much greater peace of mind. You can learn this technique: https://www.rd.com/list/how-totrain-a-cat/. EMPLOYMENT
