DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR
Penny Saver
Get support or talk it out. Speaking about what you are going through and getting reassurance from other people can work wonders to strengthen resilience. When the desire to quit sneaks up, you can consult with a friend or consider a support group. For example, taking a group class at the gym may be a more effective motivational tool than working out solo.

Walks and fetch are her main hobbies, but she does occasionally enjoy jumping in the swamp of the canal or chasing the family chickens against Mom’s wishes. Thanks for letting us love on you Harper!

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Off-Leash Dogs Bane of His Walks in Woods DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Hatch” and I frequently walk the trails of a state park near my house. A leash is required in the park, but many dog owners ignore this rule and allow their dogs to bound ahead. Not all of these dogs are well-socialized, and we’ve faced aggressive, unleashed dogs on the trails. I carry a walking stick in case I need to fend off an attacking dog -- something that hasn’t happened yet, though it’s come close once or twice. Please help me make other dog owners aware that off-leash dogs can make other dogs, and humans, quite nervous. Keeping dogs on leash will help avoid a confrontation, fight or injury. -- Doug S., Stoneham, Massachusetts DEAR DOUG: You’re absolutely right! Dog owners, always review the rules regarding pets on park lands. Even though forested trails seem remote and safer for dogs to run free without a leash, you never know if another dog is just around the bend. Further, even a leashed dog needs to follow basic commands like sit, stay and heel, and to come back immediately when called if the leash is accidentally dropped. Rules are typically posted at trailheads, as well as on park websites. There’s no reason to not be familiar with leash rules before going for a hike. If you encounter an off-leash dog while on a trail, remain calm. Shorten your dog’s leash so that he walks next to you. Stay calm and relaxed with the owner when they finally appear, too. Ask if they’re aware that there’s a leash rule on the trail, but don’t start a confrontation. The more awareness you can build of your park’s rules, the fewer offleash meetings you’ll face.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.
HOW TO BE MORE COURTEOUS WHILE DINING OUT If something is not right with the meal, mention it early so it can be remedied. Do not eat an entire meal before filing a complaint with the server.

Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

TREE SERVICES GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING
585.202.6794
Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

Give Back TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
And Feel Rewarded
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Spleen Screens Bacteria and Spent Blood Cells From Body
Elderly People in your area need your help.
• Doctor Appointments • Errands • Companionship • Meals
---
References, background check required. Flexible Hours.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I had an abdominal X-ray to check on my gallstones, and was surprised to find an enlarged spleen. I was told it might be leukemia or lymphoma! I was sent to an oncologist, who reassured me that I did not have cancer and recommended I get checked again in six months. My doctor checked it after three, and my spleen had gone back down! What is all this with the spleen? People have it removed after injuries, like accidents. It seems to be insignificant, but can it be an omen for cancer? -- M.K. ANSWER: The spleen is an underappreciated abdominal organ. Its major job is to filter and remove old or damaged red blood cells, but it also removes bacteria. In addition, the spleen acts as a very large lymph node, allowing infection-fighting white blood cells to gather and activate. Removal of the spleen leaves people at a higher risk of some kinds of bacterial infections. Enlargement of the spleen has many potential causes. Both liver and heart disease can cause passive congestion of the spleen with blood. Cancer, especially lymphoma, is a common cause, but infection is one cause to consider in a person in whom the spleen enlarges and then returns to normal. There are many less-common causes as well. If the spleen is removed or is nonfunctional (this is almost universal in adults with sickle cell disease, for example), then infections are common, and vaccinations have a different and more intensive schedule, ideally given when the spleen is still in place and working. It is probably worth it for your doctor to continue to keep an eye on.

Mohammad Rumi, MD, FCCP Board Certified:

There are four types of teeth, each one having its own shape and function. Incisors, the eight teeth in the front center of your mouth (four on both bottom and top), are primarily used to bite into food. Canines, the next teeth that develop in the mouth, are the four sharpest teeth, used for tearing food apart. Premolars account for eight teeth; they are used for tearing and crushing food and have a flat biting surface. Molars are the largest and sturdiest teeth. Their function is similar to that of the premolars: to grind, tear, and crush food. Molars also have a large and flat biting surface, making them perfect for the job.
535 East Main St., Batavia, NY 585-343-0028
We’ll use all the tools at our disposal to help keep all your incisors, canines, premolars, and molars strong and healthy. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we fervently believe that one of the most important services we deliver to our patients is a plan for preventive care. Along with daily brushing and flossing, one crucial tool to your good oral health are regular visits to the dentist. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we have office hours by appointment. Please call 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances. P. S. Also called third molars, the last set of teeth to come in are the four wisdom teeth.

585-584-9250 STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the early 1800s, a railroad marketer set up a head-on collision between two trains as a publicity stunt. Some 40,000 people came to watch, and the resulting boiler explosion killed three spectators. But ticket sales soared, and railways everywhere staged train crashes right up until the Great Depression. * One of the weirdest scandals in sports history occurred in 1973 when New York Yankees players Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich decided to trade families -- wives, children, even dogs! After the couples became close friends, Peterson fell in love with Kekich’s wife and vice versa. “It’s a love story. It wasn’t anything dirty,” Peterson told a reporter in 2013. Peterson is still married to the former Mrs. Kekich, but Kekich and the former Mrs. Peterson later split up. * Pepper spray and tear gas are technically classified as chemical weapons and thus are forbidden in warfare. * The human body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring a gallon of water to a boil.

Winter Emergency Kit: In case of emergencies, you may get stuck or need to spend time in your car waiting for help. Make sure that your vehicle is equipped to handle a wide range of scenarios. Always be sure to carry a tire gauge, jack and fully inflated spare. If you get stuck, you’ll be glad to have a shovel and gravel, salt or a small piece of carpet for traction. Jumper cables or even a portable charger can help address battery related problems. Maximize your safety with emergency flares and a firstaid kit. In addition, stash a small supply of non-perishable food and water, as well as warm clothes or a blanket, especially if you’ll be driving lesser-traveled roads.

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an average of 11,500 snow-shovelingrelated injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006. Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms and hands and cardiac-related injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow. There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcattype devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines. OATKA EDITION

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Is Telehealth All It’s Cracked Up to Be
Medicare started paying for telehealth medical visits last year and will continue through the end of 2023. With telehealth, we sit in our homes and talk to our doctor on a screen, and Medicare pays for it. In the beginning, the number of telehealth visits skyrocketed -- and then fell dramatically. Is that because we learned the hard way just what the limitations of telehealth really are? There are people on both sides of the “should seniors use telehealth” debate. They both say they offer solid evidence for their opinion. Those who claim it’s a great thing for us to consult with our doctors via a little screen say it’s helpful because it keeps us out of the doctor’s office. We don’t have to go in among all the germs, and we don’t need to worry about transportation. On the other hand, those who are against telehealth appointments for seniors argue that many of us can’t even afford the very devices we would need for telehealth. Even if we have a cellphone, the screen is so small as to be worthless, especially if we have a vision or hearing problem. Then there are the plan fees needed for that device. And what of privacy when we need someone at hand to help navigate the software for us? Do we really want our grandchildren sitting there when we discuss a personal issue with our doctor? Even if we have a computer, one with a large monitor, how is that going to work when we need the doctor to look at a rash on our back? Or if we really ought to have a stethoscope pressed to our chest because of that ragged cough we’ve had for days? Note: If you have original Medicare, you’ll pay the same amount for the telehealth appointment as you would if you got the services in person. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Freshen stuffed animals by securing a few in a pillowcase and adding a fabric softener sheet. Put in the dryer on low heat for 20 minutes, then remove and brush out the fur, if necessary, while still warm. * “Keep a quart container in the freezer and whenever you have a small amount of leftovers, chop them up and add it to your container. When it’s full, thaw it. Add some of your favorite soup beans, pizza sauce, milk and cheese, and you have a unique and delicious soup.” -- M. from Pennsylvania * If you’ve been decluttering as a part of your New Year’s resolutions, and you came across old pairs of eyeglasses, know that you can donate them to any Lion’s Club in your area. They redistribute the glasses to those who cannot afford them. You don’t have to know the prescription, and they take reading glasses, too! * How can you keep snow and ice off your windshield? Some say a solution of three parts vinegar to one-part water sprayed on the windshield each night can cut your ice-scraping time in half or better. (Use caution to avoid your paint job.) Also, try covering your wipers with an old pair of long socks so they don’t freeze to the glass! * “For pastry cooking, try grating frozen butter into the flour. It cuts in better and will stay cool longer. This helps when I’m making shortbread, as the flour and butter need to be combined. I don’t end up having to put it in the fridge to cool it back down.” -- C.S. in South Carolina

Three Churchville-Chili High School Seniors Sign Letters of Intent BY AMANDA PULEO
C
hurchville-Chili High School recently celebrated with three of their senior Saints signing letters of intent to play their chosen sports at the college level. Post-graduation, Gaven Egan will be moving on to Binghamton University’s Division I Bearcats men’s soccer team. Lacrosse player Fiona Clancy will head to Newberry College in South Carolina to play for their Division II Wolves, and Madison Buck is trading her status as a Churchville-Chili Saint for a place on Buffalo’s D’Youville College Saints Division II women’s lacrosse team. “Gaven helped lead the Saints to the Section V soccer finals in two consecutive years and was part of our division title winning teams in 2018 and 2021,” said Athletic Director Michael Murray. “He was named Monroe County Division 2 Player of the Year for 2021.” Three-time First Team All-County honoree Gaven Egan was also named to All-Greater Rochester’s First Team twice. In 2021, he made both Third Team All-State and Section V All-Tournament Team. In 2020, he made Fift h Team All-State. Egan was selected to participate in the 2021 Exceptional Senior Game. The Binghamton Bearcats soccer program is a highly respected member of the America East Conference and has earned United Soccer Coaches’ (USC) Team Academic honors for 10 consecutive years. In 2020, lacrosse defender Fiona Clancy amassed 15 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. “Fiona was our leader on defense,” said Varsity Lacrosse Coach Sean Marsh. “She did an excellent job communicating with her teammates and took our young goalie under her wing, as she was in her first year on the team. I really appreciate Fiona’s tenacity and confidence on the field.” Newberry College’s Division II team is part of the South Atlantic Conference.
Soon-to-be Binghamton Bearcat soccer player Gaven Egan with parents Michael and Elizabeth Egan.
Churchville-Chili senior Fiona Clancy, pictured here with parents Christina and Brad Clancy, is headed to South Carolina to play with the Newberry College Wolves lacrosse team.
“Maddy was a leader on and off the field,” said Varsity Lacrosse Coach Sean Marsh of senior Madison Buck. “She really improved her stick skills and her total lacrosse IQ this year.” Buck led the Saints to 27 goals this season and tied the team lead of 33 points. She collected five caused turnovers and 12 ground balls. Marsh added, “She’s a very coachable lacrosse player.” D’Youville Athletics was accepted into the NCAA Division II in 2020 and competes as a member of the East Coast Conference.

S T N RA S E V RA Thank you, emergency responders! Hidden Meadows in Bergen, NY, is a quiet retirement community. Most of the residents are retired, so the pace of life is gentle, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. This peace was shattered on Thursday, 12/30/21 just before 8:00 p.m. when a house exploded into flames. Neighbors, with the help of firemen, forced the door open, pulled the owner of the home out, and put her on oxygen. Almost certainly, they saved her life. The residents of Hidden Meadows Senior Community want to say, “Thank you!” to the Firefighters, EMTs and other related Emergency Response personnel. We are proud of your work and grateful for your service. May God bless you and watch over you! Wonderful neighbors! I am very blessed to live next door to the Hensler family. Words cannot adequately express how much their acts of kindness mean to me. Thank you. - JMH Rescued I have to thank a special person who took the time to help my runaway pup. This was in the afternoon on 1/10/22. My pup had got out of her collar and ran to a busy complex road. By the time I got back to the road, this person had my pup in her vehicle and then handed her to me. My thanks also to those who took the time to stop their vehicles and were patient. My pup survived the ordeal without harm. She means the world to me. I can’t express my gratitude enough for the helpfulness. God Bless!

No Jingle Bells? It seems like every day an old tradition or piece of history gets trashed or destroyed in our country by some so-called, well-meaning group. [Local school] recently banned playing or singing Jingle Bells. What's next, telling the students there's no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny? I think they should have to specify their reasons to the taxpayers of their school district. Side street speeding I live on the east side of [local town], and I can't believe how many people fly down my street. A lot of the streets don't have sidewalks, so I keep my dog on the grass, but sometimes I'm scared for myself because when there's a car coming from each direction, neither one will slow down. These are residential areas, not the expressway. Reasonable tree prices To the person complaining about Christmas tree prices: it is the one time of year that those families make the bulk of their income (especially local). It costs money, time, and energy to grow those trees and keep them healthy for you and your families to enjoy. If your tree cost you $54, that means it cost $4.50 a month. Then you have to count all those years they kept that tree. It really isn’t that expensive. They are farmers! They have to raise prices just as everyone else in the economy has. They need to make a living, too. Honestly, if you’re not happy about it, be a Scrooge and don’t get a tree at all.
Animal cruelty I have been made aware of a very sad, and possibly cruel, situation. On a local country road, there are three horses standing in a small corral that is all mud. They are very close to the road, and although I saw some hay spread on top of the mud, the horses look scrawny and sick. They look like they huddle together for warmth. I saw no shelter they could go into in this bitter weather. My question is this: why do people keep pets if they don’t take care of them? I worry for them on these frigid days and nights, but apparently there are no laws preventing this type of abuse.

HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD
Class A & Class B Drivers Wanted
Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.

(NAPSI) — According to Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, window film makes a lot of sense for homeowners eager to save money on their energy bills.
BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.
“Solar-control films can block as much as 80 percent of the solar heat coming through glass into a building, decrease the heat load on the air-conditioning system and reduce energy costs,” Smith says. With more people working and studying from home, window film allows in abundant natural sunlight while blocking 99 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays to better protect the skin (from possible cancer) and eyes (from cataract development), while reducing the fading of floors and furnishings. Smith estimates that 40 to 60 percent of color fading is caused by UV exposure. Windows may also be upgraded for safety, as window film helps to hold glass pieces together if the window is impacted and broken. For even a 3,000 square foot home, window film may be installed in a day or less with minimal disruption. Window film installers clean the glass before installation, keep the work space clean and practice safe contact as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control.
