Emergency Help for Hungry Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: So many people are out of work right now, and there is little to no assistance available to them just to pay rent, much less buy food for themselves. I am wondering, how will people be able to feed their pets in this desperate situation? -- Jamie G., Atlanta DEAR JAMIE: One of the bright spots in this pandemic is the way that individuals have responded to help each other and fill the needs of tens of thousands -- maybe millions -- of pets. Shelters in many parts of the country have opened or expanded food pantries for pets to help owners keep their dogs and cats healthy and fed. Napa County, California, for example, transformed two empty shipping containers into a community pet pantry offering free supplies this summer. (Search for “Napa County’s new pet pantry” to learn more.) In Tuscon, Cody’s Friends, a charity started in 2010 by a 10-year-old boy, has seen a huge surge of demand for pet food and is distributing to area shelters and clinics as fast as possible (https://codysfriends.org). And in North Carolina, the Davidson County Animal Alliance extended its holiday pet food collection drive because there was so much need. If you are struggling to pay for pet food for any reason, contact your local shelter first and ask if there is a pet food program available. You may not be able to pick up food directly from a shelter; it may be distributed at a different location. Contact local food banks, churches and municipal offices. And of course, search online or on Facebook for these services as well. Also, if you’ve been waiting to donate food, pet supplies or cash to a local shelter or charity, now is your moment to shine. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority. 1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated.

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Adopt an “out with the old, in with the new” mantra. Resolve to discard old items after purchasing new ones or receiving birthday or holiday gifts. Hanging on to old items because they can still function and serve some utility is a recipe for a cluttered home. Anytime you or a family member brings a new item into your home, make sure the item it’s replacing finds its way out the door.

3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself.

The winning pet will have $50 donated to a local animal shelter in his/her name.

Student Malena Leastman shares her boldly-blended Zen Turtle

Banishing Stress with Art at Churchville-Chili Middle School

Cullen Hunter and his rainbow turtle with a many-patterned shell.

Striking Zentangle artwork by Sofia Lagares

Maren Freece and her delicately patterned turtle

It’s been a tough year for students everywhere, but at ChurchvilleChili’s Middle School some of them have discovered a fun, easy way to relax and be creative. Seventh-graders in teacher Charmagne Dodd’s art class learned how to use the art of Zentangle® to create beautiful patterns and enjoy the focused mindfulness of creative process.

possible,” she said. “I used different shades of brown on its shell so that it looked like it was facing away from the sun.”

Their art project began with a choice of several existing drawings of turtles, as this basic shape was the foundation for the real challenge. From here, students drew into the turtles with a variety of simple, repeated patterns, called “tangles.” The line art is meant to be unplanned and non-representational, growing organically, stroke by stroke.

“The project has some excellent grade-level design concepts,” said art teacher Dodd. “It reinforces previously learned skills and helps kids think more about composition. They tend to get a little lost in this–they really concentrate and enjoy the meditative properties of the evolving patterns.”

Students added color and a variety of blending techniques to finish their designs, exploring warm or cool color families, and bright or pastel shades. Every finished turtle was unique and reflective of the individual student’s personality.

As a final treat for artists, Dodd and Library Media Specialist Julia Loson collaborated on setting up a Zen Turtle art show at the Middle School library to give students an opportunity to share their work and get feedback from their peers.

While some students used a very spontaneous approach, careful organization was central to many of the overall designs. “My zentangles were planned out,” said Madelyn Pier. “On the shell, you can see that the patterns repeat every other time. I had a plan for color, too. Every cool color on the turtle is always touching a hot color.” She said that the most calming part for her was the blending. “I don’t know why, but it just made me feel relaxed.”

Student Kaitlyn Pozzuolo visualized herself and her turtle on a warm, sunny beach. “I tried to make my turtle as realistic as

SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19 (NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers. They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time. The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent).

Full e c Servi tive o m o t Au

There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them.

We Care About

We make your smile our number one priority!

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

USE OF BOTOX IN DENTISTRY Botox usually brings to mind cosmetic procedures for wrinkle reduction and smoother skin. It works because the toxin in Botox blocks the nerve signals that control muscle movement, essentially paralyzing the muscles in that area. It is this property that makes the product useful in dentistry. Dentists are using Botox to treat Temporal Mandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ), often caused by teeth grinding, by preventing the muscles from engaging in the intense clenching that causes the problems. It can also be used to adjust lips before or after oral surgery or denture placement. Some dentists use Botox for cosmetic improvements, believing their extensive training in oral and facial anatomy and function

make them particularly qualified to do so. Ours is a unique, advanced facility at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, designed to provide patients with the most upto-date, comfortable, convenient dental care possible. We’ll keep an eye on your complete oral health when you join our ever-growing list of smiling patients. If you have recently moved to the Batavia area and are looking for state-of-the-art dentistry and a dedicated professional dental team, we welcome your call at 6 Batavia City Centre, 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances.

P.S. A high lip line or “gummy smile” usually requires surgery to alter, but Botox may eliminate the need for surgery by relaxing the lip muscles.

By JoAnn Derson * N.B. of Texas, writes: “I never could find the time to exercise. When I got home, I had to rush to get supper, etc., and afterward all I wanted to do was plop down and watch television. Then I got an exercise mat and a stationary bicycle. When I couldn’t work out very long, I worked out during commercials. I’ve lost 3 pounds so far!” Great idea for all those with fitness on their New Year’s Resolution lists, Nancy! * Two wonderful tips came in from G.K. of Minnesota: “To protect floors from being damaged by chairs being pushed around, glue rounds of carpeting beneath the chair legs. They are easily removed for replacing as they wear down. Also, when making bread or rolls, warm the flour in the oven or microwave so as not to chill the butter. The dough will rise faster.” * B.W. of Colorado swears by brake cleaner to get rid of bad spots on carpets. “Regular automotive brake cleaner on the spot and a clean rag will remove almost all stains,” he says. * “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- B.M. in New York

I HAVE A DREAM... Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which was delivered to a crowd of 250,000 in Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963, is one of the most memorable moments of Dr. King’s life. In the 17-minute monologue, Dr. King called for an end to racism. Interestingly, the “dream” component of the speech wasn’t in the original draft. Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson reportedly coached Dr. King to tell the listeners “about the dream.” Caledonia Library: “PLEASE TAKE NOTE” The Caledonia Library is continuing with pick-up services only. RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS

Salmon Orthodontics Beautiful smiles enhance self-confidence & self-esteem.

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.

Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry.

www.salmonorthodontics.com

Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

AS WORLD FACES HEALTH CRISES, NEW REPORT FINDS TRUST IS VITAL

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

(NAPSI)—Recently, health experts gathered online to forecast the future of medicine. One theme: the increasing frequency of global crises.

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Office Test Alone Can’t Diagnose COPD --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a healthy 70-year-old woman. The only prescription medication I take is for dry eyes. I recently visited my new primary physician for the first time, and she had me do a breathing test, where I exhaled into a tube to measure airflow. I was told to breathe deeply and exhale completely into the tube three times in succession. It took less than a minute to complete. It is apparently a routine test she orders for new patients. She then told me I have COPD, on the basis of that test alone. She asked if I had ever smoked or been exposed to secondhand smoke. That was her only question -coughing or shortness of breath was never mentioned. I have never smoked, but my father was a smoker when I was growing up. I actually do have a slightly productive cough most mornings. I probably walk about 10 miles a week, and I do notice some shortness of breath on long uphill sections, though I can walk briskly in level areas for miles with no problem. She said it is not advanced enough to require an inhaler at this time. I am bothered by this very easy “diagnosis” on the basis of one simple test. I wonder if I should ask to be referred to a pulmonologist for a more thorough evaluation. -- O.P. ANSWER: The test your doctor performed is called office spirometry, and it is useful for monitoring known pulmonary diseases, especially COPD and asthma. However, by itself, it is inadequate to make the diagnosis of COPD, which I am not sure you have. The diagnosis of COPD is made in people with persistent respiratory symptoms, usually shortness of breath or coughing. Spirometry will usually show obstruction to airflow. Formal pulmonary function testing, which is an extensive process taking an hour or so with a skilled and experienced technician, is ideal for determining severity. The problem with getting a breathing test in someone who has no significant symptoms is that you can find someone whose test results are at or just below the lower limit of normal, and the diagnosis is unclear. The prognosis for people with mild airway obstruction but with no symptoms of COPD is much better than for people with COPD and who continue to smoke. For this reason, using spirometry as a screening test for everyone is not recommended. Without knowing the exact results of your spirometry, I suspect you do not have COPD, given your absence of smoking and your extremely mild symptoms. A comprehensive exam by a pulmonologist would be definitive and may help you be less anxious about the results you have now.

Now, COVID-19 has brought this hypothetical threat to life, and a report by the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP), an independent, nonprofit, scientific organization dedicated to improving public health through public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety and benefit of medicines and foods, and the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence can help. Called “Trust or Consequences 2040: Will Innovations in Health and Medicine Deliver?” identifies what may happen in the future and explores the role that trust will play in helping people live longer and healthier. It identifies likely drivers of change, such as big data, artificial intelligence (AI), gene editing, risks to health systems and medicine supply chains and opportunities to improve global health. Four scenarios surfaced: Scaling the tried and true: Rolling crises spur effective global collaboration to address health concerns. Medical advances based on big data and AI are implemented gradually. The focus is on baseline healthcare for all. Dangerous uncertainty: Problems with big data and AI lead to devastating healthcare failures. Unequal access to innovation means only the rich receive advanced treatments; people turn to folk medicines, science-based medicine is questioned. A world of difference: The success of big data and AI in healthcare leads to rapid advances in personalized medicine and prevention. Not everyone can access this and disparities between and within countries perpetuate a “haves” versus “have nots” dynamic. Solving tomorrow’s problems: Smart innovation is widely distributed. Big data and AI create inexpensive diagnostic tools. Diseases become more predictable and healthcare emphasizes prevention. New treatments and technological advances curb costs. The report also suggests how public quality standards for medical products could help promote trust in health and medicine in the future—as they have for 200 years. “Many of the challenging issues we face in healthcare are recurring and persistent. ‘Trust or Consequences 2040’ points out that we must plan for the future we want, or we risk failure and an erosion of trust. Standards offer a proven approach to building trust and ensuring as many people as possible benefit from promising innovations in health and medicine,” said Ronald T. Piervincenzi, Ph.D., CEO of USP. Read the report at www.usp.org/trustorconsequences. Share your opinion on social media using #TrustTomorrow.

Through his religious teachings and social activism, Dr. King played a key role in the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. While Dr. King lived a good portion of his life in the public eye, many facts of his life are not widely known. In honor of his birthday and Black History Month, the following are some interesting and less publicized facts about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 1. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birth name was not “Martin,” but “Michael.” Dr. King’s father traveled to Germany and became inspired by Protestant reformer Martin Luther and thus changed his name while also changing the name of his then 5-year-old-son. 2. Dr. King was a prodigious student. Not only did he skip two grades and start college before formally graduating high school, but Dr. King also earned a bachelor’s degree at age 19, graduating from Morehouse College in 1948 with a degree in sociology. 3. Though not a singer, Dr. King earned a posthumous Grammy Award nonetheless. In 1971, Dr. King was awarded Best Spoken Word album for “Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam.” 4. Although people cannot readily find photographs of Dr. King smoking, he was a regular smoker and even hid the habit from the public and from his children so they wouldn’t take up smoking. It was believed Dr. King was smoking a cigarette when he was fatally shot. 5. While Dr. King is remembered as an enthralling public speaker, he actually scored poorly in public speaking during his first year at seminary. He received a “C” in the class but earned straight “As” by his final year. 6. Dr. King was a “Star Trek” fan. He convinced actress Nichelle Nichols, who played the role of “Uhura” on the show, to continue working with the series. Nichols was considering leaving, but Dr. King told her she was breaking boundaries by playing a character who didn’t conform to black stereotypes. 7. Dr. King narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on September 20, 1958. On that day, Dr. King was in Harlem signing copies of his new book, “Stride Toward Freedom,” when he was approached by a woman who stabbed him with a letter opener. He barely survived. 8. Dr. King’s speech in Memphis in April 1968 may have prophesied his death. Speaking to an audience at Mason Temple Church, King said, “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now . I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.” 9. Dr. King’s birthday is now observed as a national holiday in the United States. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill in 1983. The only other American to earn this honor is George Washington.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Commute: Bending over backwards simply to get to work and then get home from work can have an incredibly negative impact on your life. A study from the Office of National Statistics in the United Kingdom found that commuters, especially those who spend between 60 and 90 minutes commuting to work, have lower life satisfaction and lower levels of happiness compared to people who don’t commute. Before accepting a job offer, estimate your commute time to and from the new office and try to determine the impact of that commute on your quality of life.
