HOW TO STAY MENTALLY SHARP AFTER RETIREMENT

4309 Gilhooly Road, Alexander, NY • 716-560-2094

DID YOU KNOW? Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Make exercise part of your retirement routine. A lack of structure may seem enticing to individuals who have spent decades working. However, many retirees find that little structure loses it appeal quickly after calling it quits. When creating a new routine in retirement, include regular exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies indicate that people who are physically active are less likely to experience a decline in their mental function. So daily exercise not only gives retirees something to do, but also benefits their brains.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD The dawn of a new year represents a chance to start anew and set goals for the months ahead. New Year’s resolutions are often made to provide the motivation people need to improve their lives and make a new year as productive and happy as possible. While people who make New Year’s resolutions fully intend to realize those goals, few actually stick to the game plan. According to researchers at the University of Scranton, just 8 percent of people who make their New Year’s resolutions actually achieve those resolutions. While that might make it seem like the odds are against men and women who have resolved to improve their lives in the year ahead, adults can realize their goals for the new year and beyond. Huge Thank You I stopped at Food Mart to pick up a couple of things on my way to a get together, and lost my debit card. Luckily I was able to pay for my items another way, but I was frantic about losing my card. Some good samaritan found it and left it at the office. There really are good people in the world! Thank you so much.

Hooray for the Medical Aftercare by Rochester Regional Health Elizabeth Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee” was written in 1850 as a love poem for another person. I want to share the ways I love what Rochester Regional Health (RRH) has done to help my wife Dianne (81) since a recent six-day stay at Rochester General Hospital for heart-related issues. Since coming home from the hospital, the follow-up care by RRH has been Tremendous. RRH provided a slew of medical equipment, such as a blood pressure device, oxygen meter reader, great scale commode, and two four-prong walkers for use upstairs and downstairs in our home. RRH has provided me a Telemedicine number to call in her vitals. RRH provided a 24/7 nurse contact for medical issues. There have been periodic visits of physical therapists, nurses, and a social worker. RRH has been God-sent with all the follow-up being provided for Dianne, my dear wife of 59 years. So, “How Do I Love RRH?” A whole lot and Thank You from the bottom of my heart. Love, Joe and Dianne Borzelliere

Driving With A Dog In Your Lap Driving under the influence of drugs/ alcohol, speeding, running stop lights/ signs are several illegal potentials that could cause serious harm to a driver or passengers or the same to those in another vehicle. PLEASE help me understand why drivers can navigate one handed while a dog sits in their lap? Driving with a dog in your lap may impede the proper functioning of an air bag/seat belt if in a collision, which may be a significant hazard to the dog, the driver and/or others in the vehicle. PLEASE tell these reckless drivers they’re a danger to themselves, their pets and others. Wake up and keep your eyes on the road and not your darn dog!

Fill it with spirits No bar is complete without alcohol and mixers. Homeowners can buy the types of spirits they love and complete their bars with the basics for mixing. When stocking a bar, keep in mind that everything does not have to be top-shelf. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and whiskey are some of the more popular spirits. Simple syrup, fresh fruit, club soda, cola, and bitters are examples of versatile mixers. Entertaining guru Martha Stewart says to have enough supplies on hand for guests. Expect each person to have three drinks (requiring three glasses), use a pound of ice, and three cocktail napkins per two-hour party. Don’t forget to also have nonalcoholic items on hand for those who don’t imbibe. Page 9

Serving Our Community for over 20 years.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had weight-loss surgery, specifically an adjustable lap band that was revised to a gastric sleeve in 2018. I have been given and read conflicting recommendations regarding the use of NSAIDs following these procedures. I have read that taking a low dose (400 mg) is considered safe. I have also read and been told to take the children’s liquid form at an adult dosage rather than the tablets. I am a 57-year-old female. I have largely avoided taking NSAIDs for years, but I have developed osteoarthritis and find that I am taking them more often (400 mg once daily, one to two times a week at most). I do ensure that I take them with food and also take a Pepcid whenever I take ibuprofen. -- A.W. ANSWER: There are several types of weight-loss (bariatric) surgery, and the best evidence that I found among those who had a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass shows up to a 70% increase in the relative risk of developing peptic ulcers after surgery. This sounds pretty terrible, but it actually means that in an average time span of four years after surgery, 1.4% of people who didn’t take any NSAIDs got an ulcer, while 2.4% of the group that had the greatest amount of NSAID use developed an ulcer. However, the same study showed that only 0.2% of patients who underwent a sleeve gastrectomy developed an ulcer, and the use of NSAIDs did not significantly increase this number. Finally, other studies have shown that medicines like famotidine (Pepcid) reduce the risk of ulcers by about half when used long-term. NSAIDs always have risks, but for a person with a gastric sleeve, the risks of lowdose ibuprofen are modest and need to be weighed against the benefits for a person’s quality of life. ***

ORAL HEALTH CARE AFTER IMPLANTS Caring for dental implants is a lot like regular oral care: brush twice a day, floss daily, and see your dentist every six months. Proper implant care will help your implants and mouth remain healthy. You’ll want to switch to a brush with soft bristles if you’re not already using one since anything abrasive can damage your new teeth and cause swelling and pain. Likewise, abrasive toothpastes and mouthwashes should be avoided. Flossing is important to remove plaque, which can accumulate around dental implants just like real teeth. Implant-specific floss can help clean those hard-to-reach places. There are certain foods you should avoid with implants, especially hard, sticky foods like caramel and hard candies, which can damage implants. Following any dental procedures we perform in our office, we always provide patients with detailed home care

instructions to help ensure a successful experience and a problem-free oral future. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our purpose in presenting this column is to exhibit the virtues of professional care in achieving and maintaining a healthy, vibrant smile. Through a combination of communication, compassionate concern and proven techniques and innovative technology, we attempt to move our patients toward an optimum state of oral health. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, hours are by appointment; call 585.343.4246. P.S. Smoking and drinking alcohol should be avoided after receiving dental implants. Implants take about six months to heal, and these substances invite infection and slow the healing process.

Get support or talk it out. Speaking about what you are going through and getting reassurance from other people can work wonders to strengthen resilience. When the desire to quit sneaks up, you can consult with a friend or consider a support group. For example, taking a group class at the gym may be a more effective motivational tool than working out solo.

If the pet is to get along with other dogs, it needs to have high exposure to other animals every day and in various scenarios. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Kennel or Sitter? Traveling Owner Can’t Decide DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am traveling for business in a few days and will be gone for just over a week. Because I can’t bring my dog Jasper with me, I’m trying to decide whether to board him at a nearby kennel or hire a dog-sitter instead. I’m worried about him contracting that respiratory illness that has been affecting dogs lately. What’s your recommendation? -- Todd G., via email DEAR TODD: Both of those options are fine -- as long as you take a few minutes to investigate both the kennel and interview the dog-sitter. Schedule a tour of the kennel facility so you can see the conditions Jasper will live in and talk to the staff. Has the kennel had any dogs develop kennel cough or other transmitted viruses recently? How often do they disinfect the kennels and play areas? How much exercise do the dogs get? Likewise, interview the dog-sitter in person, or over Zoom. How often will they visit Jasper -- once or twice a day? How often will Jasper get walks and play time? Will Jasper be the only dog being walked, or will he be part of a group of dogs? Is the dog-sitter insured, in case of accidents? Once you’ve decided which caregiver to place Jasper with, be sure they have your contact information in case of emergencies, and details about Jasper’s diet, type of food and medications. Place an article of clothing that has your scent on it in Jasper’s bag so that he is more comfortable whether staying at home or sleeping at the kennel. After you return, keep an eye on Jasper to make sure he’s healthy. If he is coughing or sneezing frequently, has a lot of nasal or eye discharge, and seems lethargic or uninterested in food, take him to the vet for an evaluation.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There actually aren’t “57 varieties” of Heinz ketchup, and never were. Company founder H.J. Heinz thought his product should have a number, and he just happened to like 57. * Cataract surgery was possible as early as the 6th century B.C. * Barbie’s physical appearance was inspired by a German doll named Bild Lilli, created in 1952 and based on a high-end call girl named Lilli who was featured in the comic strip “Bild-Zeitung.” She was sold as an adult novelty in bars and tobacco shops -- definitely not as a children’s toy. Barbie inventor Ruth Handler saw the doll while vacationing in Europe and brought it home. * Sunsets on Mars are blue. * Mob boss Vincent Gigante would wander around New York in his bathrobe to convince the police he was insane, and thus avoid capture. FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

GRILLED CALIFORNIA SWEET POTATOES (NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill. Start with this basic recipe, and if you’re feeling creative, try different shapes—sweet potato coins or steak fries, for example. Or add your favorite herbs and spices—such as chopped fresh rosemary, thyme, cinnamon or smoked paprika.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes Serves 3 or 4 1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges 1 ½ Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling Heat a grill or grill pan to mediumhigh. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, oil and salt. Arrange sweet potatoes on the grill or grill pan and cook until lightly charred and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through. Sprinkle with more salt and serve. For more recipes, nutritional information and tips for cooking with California sweetpotatoes, go to www.casweetpotatoes.com. Here’s a Tip • Sources who know say that if you drop a marble (clean glass) in your tea kettle, it will prevent it from scaling. • Like to use paper towels to dry your clean hands? Set them aside to dry, then you can use them for cleaning with glass cleaner or other solutions. • Use a shower curtain cut or folded in half under baby’s highchair to make cleaning up the floor easier. * Air-popped popcorn is better for you and healthier. If you have an air popper, you’ll also have a jar of popcorn kernels. Keep them in the refrigerator or even the freezer. You can use them straight from the fridge, and the bonus is that you’ll have less unpopped kernels and bigger, fluffier popcorn. -- E.M. in Wisconsin (c) 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

Forgotten Stories: The WWII German and Italian POWs of Oakfield, NY BY SUZIE WELLS

A

ccording to Military History Now, though “Hitler’s armies never invaded the US... hundreds of thousands of German troops did land on America’s shores – as prisoners of war.” At WWII’s peak, up to 30,000 POWs landed in US ports every month, and there were camps in almost every US state. There were up to 1,204 camps and hospitals for wounded enemies on US land for more than 370,000 German POWs, 51,000 Italian POWs, and 5,000 Japanese (MHN). At that time, with so many adult males away involved in the war effort in some capacity, these POWs labored for American farmers and businesses to keep our nation afloat. The prisoners were housed, fed, and paid for their labor quite humanely. Very few escaped, and many settled in the US after the war ended, again according to Military History Now.

The fish market “Hans” and his wife, Frieda, ran in Greifswalderstrasse, East Berlin. They lived in the apartment upstairs with their daughters, Lisolette and Margitta.

Oakfield historian Laurie Nanni shares the story of the town’s WWII POW camps: “In Oakfield, we had two POW camps during the end of WWII. The German POWs were held at the Haxton Canning Factory and the Italian POWs were held at the boarding house at the USG Paper Mill. Most of the [American] men were fighting the war, so there were not many men to do work here. Prisoners were brought mostly from Germany, and some were captured in Africa. “The Germans were under the watchful eye of armed guards in a complex with guard towers and a barbed wire fence. The Italians, on the other hand, only had guards, since midway through the war, the Italians became our nation’s allies instead of enemies. The Italians were allowed to “go home” on Sundays with other Italian families in town for dinner and to talk of the old country. “The Germans were all pretty young, some were artists and professionals, all forced to fight or their families would be killed. The Oakfield Museum at 7 Maple Ave now displays four drawings by a German artist POW. “Per 1929 Geneva Convention rules, the WWII German POWs were marched around the block of Maple Avenue for exercise, with guards at the front, back, and on the sides. They sang songs in German as they marched. They worked very hard and were well liked by the man in charge of them, Everett Smith. He was a fair man who appreciated industry. He even brought some of them to his home for a picnic a few times.

“On February 23, 2022, I received an email from CoraConstanze Sommerey, from Berlin, regarding her great uncle, Johannes Moran. They had recently found a death certificate saying he died in Oakfield, NY as a POW. The family never knew what happened to him. The Nazis came to his fish market he ran with his wife and put a gun to her head saying he had to go with them or they would kill her. They never saw him again. He had two young daughters at the time.” He was originally buried at Fort Niagara with military honors. They eventually moved the people in the cemetery there to Woodlawn Cemetery in Buffalo. Nanni said, “I was able to send the family pictures of his grave and an article regarding his death. His youngest brother was alive and in his 90s when they got my email. He cried for hours, finally knowing what happened to his brother.” From Cora-Constanze Sommeray, Johannes’ great niece – “From what my dad and my granddad told me about Hans, he and Frieda had a shop in Berlin, mainly selling fish, but also vegetables and coals. He would go on a regular basis from Berlin to Königsberg (Kaliningrad) to see my granddad and family, whistling at the garden fence and throwing his hat in the air. At family gatherings he was famous for entertaining by playing the accordion. He was so full of life and a real character.”

“One time, POWs escaped, but officials found the men. And we Johannes Maron’s tombstone had one German prisoner die while here. He opened a vat at the canning factory and was so badly burned by the steam that he went into cardiac arrest and died.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry. Page 27

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Make your goals public. By publicly declaring your intention to improve your life, you’re putting some positive pressure on yourself to fully commit to your goal. Friends and loved ones can be great sources of support, and once they’re aware of your efforts, you likely won’t want to let them down. Once you have decided on a resolution, post your short-term and long-term goals to your Facebook page or let your immediate family and closest friends know of your goals in person. Their encouragement can help you stay on track, and they may even offer to help you realize your goals.
