They’re naturally fatfree, high in vitamin C and a rich source of antioxidants. Americans love them in c ereals, salads, sauces and as toppings and by the handful, but w hen w inter comes around, many people assume fresh blueberry season is over. Not so fast. W hen the snow flies in M inneapolis, things are just heating up in places like Chile. Thanks to a robust South American fruit industry, fresh blueberries now maintain their favored position in North American produce aisles, culinary creations, and home kitchens all year long. The popularity of blueberries has soared in recent years, driven by their impressive nutritional resume. One half-c up of blueberries c ontains just 42 c alories and helps meet the recommended 5 to 9 servings a day of c olorful fruits and vegetables. The “ Little Blue Dynamos” pac k in fiber, potassium, Vitamin C and more cancer-fighting antioxidants than either w ine or green tea. Recent studies also show that fresh blueberries can help keep skin looking younger; help prevent dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease; and serve as a natural anti-inflammatory. Helping the cause significantly is that most people consider fresh blueberries a treat, including children w ho remain blissfully unaw are of the health benefits. Fresh blueberries are easily enjoyed as a grab-and-go snack, but there are other sw eet and savory w ays to beat the w inter blues w ith this superfood. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Keep track of your progress. Keep a resolutions journal or start a blog that allows you to write about your efforts. If your goal is to pay down debt, make a spreadsheet that tracks your progress. That spreadsheet might be more motivational than simply seeing a loan or credit card balance gradually reduce on your monthly statement. Writing about your trials and errors can help others and also provide a great way for you to explore your approach and tinker with it to ensure your ultimate success. OATKA EDITION

DINING OUT WITH CHILDREN
Understanding food labels is a great first step toward eating healthy.
Active children can learn table manners and restaurant behavior early on through practice. These lessons can open children up to new food experiences and help them grow accustomed to social settings. Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better. Bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly.

Technically, Opposite Day cannot exist. If you say today is Opposite Day, then because of the rules of the game, today would be the opposite of what you just said, i.e. not opposite day or a normal day. Instead, if you said it was a normal day, then it would be a normal day.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

Nurturing a Love for Reading at Churchville-Chili Elementary School BY AMANDA PULEO
C
hurchville-Chili Elementary School (CES) showcased their first Page Turners reading exhibition on Dec. 16. Three teams of voracious fourth grade readers faced off in front of the entire fourth grade class in the school gymnasium. They were determined to share their knowledge of the five books they read this semester as a result of their participation in Page Turners. Questions were asked by reading teacher Betsy Pereira and third grade teacher Amy Ciszak, and the answers came quickly and confidently from the teams. During short breaks from the action, team members shared with their audience why they love reading so much.
“This is our first year of Page Turners,” said Pereira. “It’s a wonderful enrichment opportunity for students who love to read, or who want to learn to love to read. Surprisingly, many of our most enthusiastic team members were not the most accomplished Team members worked together strategically readers to begin with.” to decide on correct answers to tough reading The extended day activity comprehension questions. is a way to build stamina, confidence and reading comprehension — skills that were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Competition was fierce, and the audience was intent on the action at the CES Page Turners tournament.
Page Turners at CES begins again in January with a new list of exciting books and hopefully many new members. Readers of all levels are encouraged to participate. Page Turners has been made possible with funding from the American Rescue Plan of 2021, which supports afterschool, summer and extended school day programs that promote enrichment opportunities, student engagement, and learning recovery due to the pandemic.
Club members committed to reading five grade-level books on their own time and meeting together once a week after school for book-related discussions and related activities. The 21 students read books ranging from graphic novel “Dog Man” by Dav Pilkey to historical novel “I Survived: The Shark Attacks of 1916” by Lauren Tarshis. Books are chosen by a committee that includes Pereira, Assistant Principal Kim Giancursio and teaching assistant Kathleen Hartwig. The current CES Page Turners members are: Nick Anderson, Lily Bridenbaugh, Grant Dobson, Mya Green, Aaron Hoose, Kinsley Keller, Carter Maysick, Iliana Melnik, Brody Meyers, Wyatt Micheli, Mason Morrison, Skyler Phillips, Olivia Placito, Ella Skuse, Madeline Smith, Reid Stedman, Elijah Tanksley, Damien Taylor, Corey Venturo, Zachary Wahls and Anabel Wilkinson. Students celebrate a job well done!

A CLEAN CAR IS MONEY IN THE BANK
Motorcycle Inspections
(NAPSI)—Purchasing a new car is a major financial investment. Keeping it clean can be an easy and inexpensive way to protect its resale and trade-in value.
VISION GREATLY AFFECTS DRIVING ABILITY Driving is a multisensory experience that requires careful coordination and mastery of a wide array of skills. Understanding the rules of the road and having sufficient practice are only part of the equation. Being able to see the road and react to obstacles, signage and more is crucial. Drivers should not downplay the importance of visual acuity when they turn their ignition keys. Acceptable vision is involved in all components of driving. Motor vehicle operators need to have clear vision to read gauges and operate the controls of the car. Distance vision also is essential to identifying road hazards and seeing other cars on the road. The health resource All About Vision says aging and visual changes at any age can affect a person’s ability to see moving objects while one is in motion - as is the case while driving a car or truck. In addition, changes in peripheral vision can increase blind spots while driving and affect reaction time. Many motor vehicle agency vision tests do not take into consideration all of the factors that can impact vision while driving. Seeking care for visual problems and changing driving habits when necessary can help people stay safe on the road.
“Many motorists procrastinate when it comes to cleaning their vehicles,” said Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Whether you do it yourself or have it cleaned professionally, proactively keeping your car clean on the outside and tidy on the inside will pay big dividends when it comes to maintaining your vehicle’s value over time.” The Car Care Council suggests five simple steps to keep a vehicle clean, helping protect it from the elements and preserve its value. • Declutter—Start the cleaning process by removing excess clutter from inside the car as it can be distracting and hazardous, especially when debris finds its way near the gas and brake pedals. Don’t forget to clear out items that have accumulated in the trunk as they can add extra weight and reduce fuel efficiency. • Clean the Interior—The next step is to thoroughly clean the interior, wash the windows, and clean and install floor mats. Be sure to vacuum on a regular basis. A clean and orderly interior lets you spot issues in the cabin so you can get them repaired before they get worse. • Wash the Exterior—Give your car a good wash from top to bottom using products specifically made for automobiles. Always clean the tires and wheels before washing the body and don’t use the same washing mitt or cloth for both.
Your Full Service Garage From shocks & struts to brakes & engine repair we get you back on the road!
• Wax Twice a Year—Waxing not only protects a vehicle’s finish, it makes subsequent washing easier. Before proceeding, make sure there are no foreign particles on the paint. It’s important to note that waxing should be done in the shade, not direct sunlight.
• Tune-ups • Tires • Diagnostics • NYS Inspection • Preventive Maintenance
• Fix Chips—If you find minor paint damage, cover the paint chips as quickly as possible to prevent further damage. For a quick fix until you can get paint touch-up supplies, dab a little clear nail polish on the scratch.

S E V RA Thanks, First Responders! Last week, I was driving to the Sweden Dog Park with my two German Shepherds. The morning temperature was below 10 degrees - freezing cold! Suddenly, my car stalled out at the intersection of Redman Road and New Campus Drive. Officer Carla Fintak just happened to be traveling the same route and she came to my rescue! I was able to stay warm inside her patrol car while awaiting
Back to Drivers Ed For those who make left turns into a four lane road, per the NYS Driver’s Manual: “Approach the turn from the right half of the roadway closest to the center. Enter the left lane, to the right of the center line. When traffic permits, you can move out of the left lane.” Note: Enter the left lane, not the right lane because the right lane puts you in the blind spot of the person who was in front of you and who just did it correctly. No Jingle? Who Cares! About no Jingle Bells in the schools: I do know the history on the reasoning for this, but it’s only a song. There’s so many songs that kids can sing. Don’t be so upset over something so miniscule. Move on; really, it’s only a song. Please put more energy into helping the homeless or perhaps volunteering in a food pantry. That’s a much more important place to use this energy. Stop Animal Cruelty To the person who talked about horses being neglected on a local country road - please, please report this situation to the police or Lollipop Farm. They will send someone out to check. The owners will be prosecuted, and the horses will be rescued. Please don’t wait another minute, or they will die. I’m sure you don’t want that on your conscience. There is far too much animal abuse

Great Job! A huge Thank You to the firemen who responded to the fire at Seneca Place in the early morning hours on January 14th. Although some lost all, others’homes were spared. Of course, most important was the fact that there were no deaths or injuries of residents or firefighters. Also, Thank You to the staff at Pinehurst for inviting the residents in to get warm and have coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks. It was much appreciated. Last, but not least, thanks to the residents and others who were there to help Saturday morning when affected residents were allowed in to get essentials from their apartments. Seneca Place has always taken good care of their buildings and handled this disaster as well as could be expected. - Thankful
going on in this world and if the good, caring people don’t step up, who will? Animals are innocent and are on this earth for us to love and cherish, not abuse! Outdoor Cats There are pet owners on [local road] in [local area] who think it’s appropriate to let their cats wander around the neighborhood looking for food in sub-zero weather. Please don’t depend on good-hearted neighbors feeding them; it’s your responsibility. Seriously?! Was sad to see that 42% of respondents to the recent GVPS poll indicated they were not concerned about our planet and environment.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * To soften food that is stuck on a pan, try soaking it overnight with fabric softener. Just fill the pan with enough water to cover the burned-on food, then lay a dryer sheet of fabric softener in the pan (poke it down so it will stay under the water). The next morning, you should be able to wipe the food right off. You can even use the fabric softener sheet as a scrubber. – A.S. in Maryland * I installed rivet rings in the corner of my bathroom towels. Now, when I hang a towel up, it stays hung up. – I.S. via e-mail * Ways to avoid spam, that nuisance e-mail that comes to fill your e-mail box in droves: Use a name that has both words and numbers. Keep a separate “free,” e-mail address for bill-paying and one for shopping. Be sure to report spam to your e-mail provider. Up your filter and add everyone you know to your address book or “safe,” list. – via e-mail * To keep thread straight when threading needles, I run the end across a cheap glue stick. It works very well, and the glue washes right out of the thread. Or, if you are afraid it will be sticky, you can just clip the end off before you start sewing. – T.E. in Kentucky * To make butter easier to spread on bread or toast, we keep a stick in a plastic sandwich baggie. We just handle the butter a bit through the bag. It softens, but doesn’t overmelt, like when you put it in the microwave. You can just reseal the baggie and put it back in the fridge. – N.U. in Florida

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Many people feel the dawn of a new year provides an opportunity to clean the slate and begin anew. That notion can be applied in various ways, including around the house. Cleaning the slate at home may involve reducing clutter around the house. Clutter can gradually overtake a home’s interior, turning a once pristine home into one overwhelmed with nonessential items. As intimidating as clutter can seem, discarding it is easier than it may appear. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

“People who matter are most aware that everyone else does, too...” ~ Malcom S. Forbes When anyone achieves a position of prestige, authority or public adulation, that person might be expected to become quite indifferent to the opinions of “ordinary people.” This is seldom true. A few conceited snobs may be carried away with the thrill of their own fame but the people who really matter never forget that it is the high regard of the “little people” to which they owe their success. The bigger the person… the more he matters… the more likely he is to recognize the importance of the least of the rest of us. Our staff keeps well-informed on benefits available from Social Security, Veteran’s programs, insurance and other sources. We can assist you in determining those you may qualify for.

But in 2008, researchers at Indiana University debunked that myth, suggesting that if humans lost that much heat through their heads, then they w ould be just as cold w hen going outside w ithout a hat on as they w ould be if they left home w ithout w earing any pants. But w earing headgear w hen exercising outdoors is still a good idea, as the head is more sensitive to changes in temperature than many other areas of the body. A w ool hat you can pull dow n over your ears can protect them from getting too cold. Athletes may also w ant to consider ski masks or other facial covers that can protect their faces w hen w inter w inds are how ling.

KIDS AND SLEEP School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Risk to Chemotherapy Patient From Healthy Cat is Small ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My neighbor is battling cancer for the third time. The medical personnel she sees when she goes for her chemotherapy treatments are urging her to get rid of her two cats. They claim the cats are a danger to her health. Wearing gloves and a mask while cleaning litter boxes will not help. Why? What do the cats have that can hurt someone going through chemotherapy? -- S.C. ANSWER: Cancer chemotherapy frequently causes damage to the body’s immune system. Many types of chemotherapy work against fast-growing cells, and while cancer cells are fast-growing, your neighbor’s healthy immune system cells, especially white blood cells, are also fast-growing and can be damaged by the chemotherapy. Avoiding potentially infectious agents is therefore wise advice for people going through chemo. There are several potential infections that can be transmitted from cats to humans. The one we worry about most is probably toxoplasmosis, a protozoan infection. Toxoplasmosis is a big concern in people with HIV, but also can be an issue in people who have recurrent chemotherapy or have a more prolonged reduction in immune system function. However, toxoplasmosis can be effectively avoided by wearing gloves while changing the litter box, keeping the cats indoors and feeding them only high-quality cat food and never raw meat. Cat bites or scratches can be very serious, especially to someone with an immune system that is less than perfect. If her cats occasionally bite or scratch, that would be a problem. There are a few other uncommon zoonotic diseases (ones that can be transmitted from animals to humans) that might be of concern. Her cats’ veterinarian would be a useful resource to find out more. The cats should, of course, be thoroughly evaluated. Allergies, not infection, might be the issue, but allergies are usually less of a problem during chemotherapy. The risks from a healthy indoor cat are very small. Risks must always be balanced against the very strong feelings people have for their pets, especially at a vulnerable time. I would not recommend separating a person from her cats without very good reason, and would want to know exactly why, since it’s not clear to me in this case. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. (c) 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TOOTH SENSITIVITIES Tooth sensitivity is usually experienced after eating or drinking something cold or hot. This discomfort occurs with varying degrees of severity. Patients with tooth sensitivity often also have pain while brushing or flossing, so it’s imperative to find the cause and begin treatment. Experiencing pain while brushing or flossing may lead to diminished dental hygiene, which can then escalate and trigger further dental problems such as gum disease and cavities. Tooth sensitivity can be minor or indicate a serious dental problem, so patients with any sensitivity to cold or hot should speak with their dental professional immediately. A thorough dental examination will assist in determining the underlying cause and indicate the most appropriate treatment to eliminate pain.
Dental pain of any kind is the body’s way of signaling that something is wrong. When you ignore the pain, however, you also ignore the underlying problem, and relief slips farther and farther away. Be smart! For excellence in dental care from a caring staff committed to your comfort, wellbeing, and sunny smile, call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment (585.343.4246). Emergencies are also welcome at our full-service, stateof-the-art dental office located at 6 Batavia City Centre. P. S. Dental sensitivity has been described as a sharp, stabbing pain or sensations of pins and needles, followed by throbbing pain.

Keep Pets Prepared for Emergencies in Winter, Too Dear Paws: Please remind your readers to include their pets in winter emergency preparedness planning. Last year, when the Texas power grid failed in extreme cold weather conditions, shelters saw many pets with cold-related injuries. When the power goes out on a cold night -- or for several days -- dogs and cats can’t just “tough it out.” -- Tyler in Southeast Texas Dear Tyler: You’re absolutely right. Readers, emergency preparedness should always include your pets. I warn my East Coast readers each summer at the start of hurricane season to put together a grab-and-go emergency kit for their pet. But every region experiences natural disasters, and sometimes they occur in the depths of winter. A winter-ready pet emergency kit should include: - A warm blanket for each pet. - A soft pad for pets to sleep on if you’re in an evacuation center. - Booties and sweaters to wear when pets go outside in freezing conditions. - Pee pads and pet waste bags. - Three days of canned or dry pet food, and bottled water. - A copy of each pet’s vaccination and medical records. - A three-day supply of each pet’s medication. - A list of important phone numbers, including their veterinarian. - Extra leash and collar for each pet, and extra ID tags. If your pet isn’t microchipped, I strongly recommend it. Pets have escaped from even the most responsible, organized owners. Keep them up to date on vaccinations as well -- it’s hard to predict whether your pet will be exposed to a disease by another cat or dog during an evacuation. You can find more tips and recommendations for emergency preparedness at https://www.ready.gov/pets.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Travel Is Complicated Right Now
My neighbor still thinks she’ll be going on a cruise to a foreign country in the spring. She calls her travel agent every few weeks to ask if the cruise is still on. Of course the travel agent doesn’t want to say no and have to give back the money just yet, so the answer is yes. My neighbor has been busily sewing new outfits for her cruise dinners. Me, I’ve been keeping silent about it, but I fear that cruise might not come to pass. There is always debate about requirements for masks on cruise ships, but that might be the least of the concerns. The latest updates have several countries in Level 4 Do Not Travel categories. My neighbor’s destination is currently at a Level 3, which is Reconsider Travel. New ones are being added all the time. If you’ll be traveling in the next few months, especially if it’s internationally, look at AARP’s travel page for helpful information: www.aarp.org/travel. Watch the Department of State’s website as well: travel.state.gov/ content/travel.html. Look for the information on your specific destination, and keep an eye on it, as it’s all subject to change. Invest in trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Make sure you understand the details of what it will and won’t cover. Be sure what the cruise company’s policies are as well. Be certain you know exactly when you’ll need a COVID-19 test before you go -- and that you can get one. At this point, many areas have backlogs on testing appointments, and walk-in places are often backed up for many hours. If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll also need a test before you return. The logistics and timing can be complicated right now. Your best bet: Stay in close touch with your travel agent about changes, warnings and timing. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, The decision to move yourself or a family member to an assisted living facility can be difficult. W hen men and w omen begin to experience difficulty w ith everyday activities, such as bathing, dressing or getting around, families may need to explore assisted living facilities.

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia. Popular sport s f or seniors: Sw im m ing: A few laps around a pool w orks your w hole body. Sw imming is attractive to seniors because it w orks the muscles and provides a cardiovascular jolt w ithout putting any strain on the joints.

Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS
Busy local auto dealership looking for a
(NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children.
FT Clerical/ Receptionist Experience and good phone skills preferred but will train the right person. Duties include handling incoming calls, errands and miscellaneous office work. Valid Driver’s license required.
One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education.
Please email resumes to blind address: carmencampbell@gvpennysaver.com
The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools.
THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.
The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.
