Papi

Hello, I am . I was born in the wild to a feral mom and was the only surviving kitten. I was 10 weeks old when my mom & dad took me indoors. I'm a busy boy, and like annoying my sister dog. My favorite toys are a foil ball, feathers on a stick, catnip mice and the window blind cords. I'm so fortunate to live in a loving home.

Please call for your appointments.

If the new tax laws have you upside down, we can help you with the changes!

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a leopard gecko named Lenetta, and I wouldn’t trade her for the world. There’s a problem, though. I also have a cat, and that cat always finds a way into the room where Lenetta is kept, and spends his time chasing the crickets through the plastic “kritter keeper.” Sometimes it gets flipped over and the crickets escape. Then I have nothing to feed to Lenetta, and there are loose crickets all over the house. How do I get this cat to stop obeying his instinct to chase these bugs? Help, before any more crickets get loose! -- Josiah from New York

DEAR JOSIAH: Ah, that’s the thing: It’s a cat’s instinct to chase small, hopping things. Cats think it’s awesome. Rather than try and teach your cat not to chase crickets -- a tough job that will require long-term commitment, daily training sessions and possibly some genetic manipulation to remove that hunting instinct -make it tougher for the kritter keeper to get turned over. Solution 1: Duct tape. One piece on each side of the lid, being careful not to cover the air vents. If you use a cricket shaker or something similar, take out the shaker tube and secure the lid. Solution 2: Camouflage. Make the cricket cage invisible. Put it on a shelf that the cat can’t reach. Cover it with a thin cloth (that air can get through) or place it behind other objects. Out of sight, out of mind. Solution 3: Keep the door to Lenetta’s room closed. This may be more difficult because your cat clearly has figured out how to get in. Think about other ways to discourage his entry. Good luck!

We Care About

We make your smile our number one priority!

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

DENTAL HYGIENE AND INFERTILITY It may seem like there are a million different areas of your health to think about when trying to get pregnant, including diet, exercise, and family medical history. Dental health is often not considered, however, even though an increasing amount of research shows that healthy dental hygiene can improve fertility in both men and women, while poor oral care can have a negative impact on in vitro fertilization treatment. Gum disease can increase the time it takes a couple to conceive and can cause several dangerous conditions including pre-eclampsia and premature birth. In men, issues such as erectile dysfunction and low sperm count can be caused by the bacterial infections of gum disease and tooth decay.

One serious threat to dental health as well as to overall health is gum disease. And the best way to deal with gum disease is to prevent it with daily brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist on a regular basis. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we are diligent in our approach to making sure periodontal disease doesn’t destroy your smile. It is our mission at 6 Batavia City Centre to deliver the highest level of care, using the latest materials and always keeping our patients’ comfort and well-being in mind. You can reach us at 585.343.4246. We accept most insurances.

P.S. Gingivitis, although not as serious a dental condition as periodontal disease (gum disease), still carries the bacteria that causes infertility problems.

Warning Signs A Tire Is About To Go Flat Tires often produce w arning signs that a flat or blow out is about to em erge, so drivers w ho w ant to avoid such unfortunate developm ents can inspect their tires for the follow ing signs. • Varying w ear: Tires should exhibit the sam e type of w ear. The w ear on front tires and back tires m ay differ, but one front tire should have the sam e am ount of w ear as the other and the sam e goes for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that the tire w ith m ore w ear could be about to go out. • Worn tread: Em ploy the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, w ith George Washington’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ first president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires. • Low pressure: M ake sure their tires are at the m anufacturerrecom m ended pressure, w hich can be found in a vehicle ow ner’s m anual or by calling the tire m anufacturer or visiting their w ebsite. An under inflated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blow out. • Vibration: A car that vibrates excessively m ay do so because tires are dam aged. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should im m ediately take the car to their m echanic for an inspection. • Physical damage to the tire: Som etim es tires exhibit physical dam age like bulges or cuts, and such signs could m ean a flat tire or blow out is just around the corner. Distracted driving is a problem that results in injuries and claims the lives of thousands of people each year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines distracted driving as any activity that diverts attention from driving. In 2015, 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 injured in the United States as a result of distracted driving. Allstate says distracted driving is now the No. 1 risk on Canadian roads, contributing to eight in 10 collisions. It is relatively easy to avoid becoming a statistic by reducing distractions behind the wheel. Put away tech devices: One of the easiest ways to reduce distractions is to keep phones and tablets out of reach while driving. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says sending or reading a text message takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for about five seconds, or long enough to cover a football field while driving at 55 mph. It removes a person’s attention from the road; takes his or her hands off of the wheel; and it mentally engages the brain when a driver’s focus should be on driving. Devices should be stowed away when driving. Drivers should pull over if they need to send a text or read a message. Set the GPS ahead of a trip Global positioning systems have revolutionized the way motorists get to and from locations. They can help signal upcoming traffic and find the best routes possible. Just like other devices, GPS can be a distraction, especially if drivers are taking their eyes off the road and constantly pressing buttons on the map. Enter the destination address before departing and place the GPS in a position that it can be glanced at, which will not impede vision. Better yet, let a passenger navigate. Limit or skip phone calls: Many people find that making phone calls while on the road is an efficient use of time. Yet the personal injury experts at Lehmbecker Law say even when drivers use hands-free devices their brains can remain distracted for 27 seconds after using voice commands to dial a number. Engaging in phone conversations will continue to take drivers’ minds off of their driving responsibilities. Drowsy driving is dangerous: Being tired can be a distraction as well. Geico insurance reports a U.S. government study showed that 37 percent of drivers have nodded off or actually fallen asleep at least once while driving. Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash by roughly four times. Those who become drowsy behind the wheel should pull over. Skip the infotainment package: New vehicle infotainment systems can take one’s attention off of the road for long periods of time. According to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers using invehicle technologies like voice-based and touch-screen features may find themselves unusually distracted. In addition to these tips, drivers can reduce the number of passengers contributing to distractions, turn down the volume on the radio, and pull over when eating on the road. Reducing distractions can save lives.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Join gyms that offer eco-friendly exercise equipment. More and more gyms are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprints, and eco-friendly fitness enthusiasts can look for such facilities before purchasing or renewing their gym memberships. Some efforts gym owners make to reduce the carbon footprint of their facilities include using only ecofriendly, biodegradable cleaning products; installing low-flow toilets, faucets and shower heads in facility restrooms and bathing areas; and installing user-powered cardiovascular machinery that consume considerably less energy than traditional machines. Inquire about a facility’s carbon footprint before purchasing a membership.

Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

No Cure, Just Treatment for Rare Skin Disorder ---

Covington STORAGE SELF

DEAR DR. ROACH: My girlfriend has necrobiosis lipoidica. She suffers from this on her shins, as did her mother. She is not diabetic. We cannot find good information on how to rid her of this. The information we find is not about cures, but treatments that mask the symptom, such as steroids. We cannot even find a doctor that specifically treats this condition. Can you help? -- M.B. ANSWER: Periodically I get letters referencing a condition like this one that I know absolutely nothing about. Fortunately, I have the time to do a lot of reading, and I talked to several people with the condition. Here is what I found. Necrobiosis lipoidica is a rare skin disorder, usually but not always associated with diabetes. It occurs mostly in young adults (the average is 25 years old when associated with diabetes, 46 years if not), and is more common in women. It may also be associated with thyroid disorders and celiac disease. The cause is unknown. The diagnosis is made by skin biopsy. The appearance is usually of a large, variably colored and elevated patch of skin, most commonly on the shins, as your girlfriend’s is, but it can spread to other parts of the body, especially skin that has been scraped or damaged. Because necrobiosis lipoidica can occasionally transform to skin cancer, it needs careful surveillance. There is no cure for necrobiosis lipoidica. However, there are treatments that can reduce the inflammation. Steroids, either topical or injected, are the usual first choice. Topical steroids are more effective if they are given as ointment and covered with an air- and water-tight dressing. If topical steroids are not as effective, there are many other therapies that have been tried, including: the medication tacrolimus, which decreases the immune response; ultraviolet light A; antimalarial drugs (also used for autoimmune diseases); and others. The disease normally progresses slowly, then stabilizes, but it can spontaneously resolve in some people. Necrobiosis lipoidica may also ulcerate, at which point a wound care specialist may be of tremendous value. It may not be easy to find an expert dermatologist for this condition. I would start with a support group, as you can get expertise from others who have been living with this condition. I found one large group on Facebook. I read some tips on makeup and temporary tattoos for cosmetic improvement. I found two clinical trials recruiting subjects, one in Boston and one in Pennsylvania. You can find clinical trial information at clinicaltrials.gov. More good information is available at https://tinyurl.com/NLskin. ***

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * An outbreak of the common cold occurred at an Antarctic base after 17 weeks of complete isolation. * After high school senior Allison Closs dressed up a cardboard cutout of Danny DeVito to go with her to prom, the actor returned the favor by bringing a cardboard cutout of Allison to the set of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” * Actual town names in the U.S. include Rabbit Hash (Kentucky), Two Egg (Florida), Ding Dong (Texas) and Bacon (Delaware).

By JoAnn Derson * “If you have a bunch of picture frames that don’t match or ones that are nicked or have small cosmetic damages, just paint them. Choose a matching color for all, and you have a collection.” -- T.L. in Florida * Kitchen tip: You can slice mushrooms in an egg slicer. * If your sneakers are smelly, try this: Stick a sheet of fabric softener in each one. Let them set overnight, and most of them time, the smell will be gone by morning. Of course, you should rotate your tennies to help them “breathe,” since wearing your shoes day after day can foster bacteria growth -- meaning your sneaks will be really stinky. * “To get sheets and towels to dry faster, try adding a tennis ball to the dryer. It bounces around inside while the cycle is going, and breaks up large items that tend to crumple into a ball.” -- C.L. in Illinois * When you get near the end of a roll of paper towels, save it to put in your car. Pull together a kit to keep in the car with the following items: a small bottle of glass cleaner, a squeeze bottle of water, some wet wipes and the short roll of paper towels. You will always be ready for a quick on-the-road cleanup. * The kitchen and the bathroom are the worst places in the house to store medicines and vitamins. Humidity and heat can damage the properties of the compounds.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Accessing Your FREE Credit Report For years we’ve been able to get one free credit report per year from each of the three credit bureaus. Right now, we’re able to get a free one each week until the middle of April. Why? Their generosity is likely due to the astronomical number of scams coming out of the COVID crisis. The number of unemployed crooks has surely gone up, making your good credit too enticing to pass up. Go to www.usa.gov/credit-reports to learn more about credit reports, scores, freezes and errors. If you want to try to get all three reports at once, call 1-877-322-8228 at the Annual Credit Report location. The others are: Equifax: 1-888-548-7878 or 1-800-685-1111; equifax. com. Experian: 1-888-397-3742; experian.com. TransUnion: 1-800-916-8800 or 888-909-8872; transunion.com. Once you get your report, either online or in the mail, study it carefully. Look for accounts that you never opened and the names of people you don’t know. Be sure all the information is correct. If you need to file a complaint, go to ftc.gov/complaint or call 1-877-FTCHELP (1-877-382-4357). (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR

Prepare your car for winter. Start with a checkup that includes:

Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

Saying Goodbye to Pandemic Stress 7 Tips for Better Self-Care in 2021 BY AMANDA DUDEK

It’s

no exaggeration to say that 2020 was a challenging year for many people. In fact, with its isolation, stress and anxiety, it is not a stretch to say it was a traumatic experience. Whether you were on the front lines as an essential worker, struggling with the isolation of extended quarantining, or somewhere in between, many of us have started this new year burdened with incredible emotional and physical fatigue. Now is the perfect time to focus on self-care with its oh-so-necessary renewal and restoration. Give yourself permission to take a break, refocus, and recharge your mind and body. Boost your wellness by incorporating something new (perhaps one of your favorite tips!) into your regular self-care routine.

1. Meditate: Meditation is an excellent means of reducing stress and restoring healthy function in the body. Practiced for thousands of years, studies show that meditation can be associated with the improvement of a variety of issues such as strengthening cognitive function, protecting against heart disease, stimulating the immune system, and reducing blood pressure as well as improving metabolism and breathing. Consider spending at least 15 minutes each day practicing mindful meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to help destress your brain.

2. Take advantage of Telemedicine: Whether you have a case of the winter blues or simply aren’t feeling like yourself, telemedicine can be a great way to see your doctor quickly and safely. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology says telehealth, which is a broader scope of remote healthcare services than telemedicine, can utilize everything from videoconferencing, the internet, store-and-forward imaging, streaming media, and terrestrial and wireless phone communications. Also, according to the American Medical Association, nearly 75 percent of all doctor, urgent care and emergency room visits can likely be handled safely and effectively over the phone or via video. Those experiencing an emergency, COVID-19 testing and treatment, or other serious symptoms and concerns, are encouraged to seek in-person treatment right away. Want to give it a try? Call your doctor’s office to see if telemedicine is right for you.

3. Journal: Sometimes, committing your experiences and worries to paper can help you to leave them in the past and move forward. Journaling can also slow your racing thoughts, allowing you to identify and better manage concrete issues. Writing can also encourage out-of-the-box thinking and creative problem solving. Ready to write? All you need is a notebook, a pen, and a quiet, private place. Give yourself permission to jot down whatever comes to mind and resist the urge to self-edit.

4. Get up & get moving: Exercise does wonders for not only maintaining a healthy, fit body, but it also can improve mood. While this can mean visiting a gym several times a week, it doesn’t have to. Though walking might not provide the same level of intensity that fitness enthusiasts are accustomed to, the Arthritis Foundation notes the various ways walking benefits the body. Walking protects against heart disease and stroke, strengthening the heart and lowering blood pressure. It can strengthen the bones, improve mood, and in some cases, has been found to lower the risk for cognitive decline and even increase life expectancy. Always consult your

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

doctor before starting a new exercise routine. Whether it’s a 10-minute stroll outdoors or several weekly workouts, keeping your body moving is a great way to release stress and improve your health.

5. Try something novel: Reading can be very calming, helping to reduce stress. By losing oneself in a book, worries can melt away, says research conducted in 2009 at the University of Sussex. Studies have also shown that reading can develop neural networks in the brain that can help readers understand more complex thought. It can also improve your vocabulary, even as you get older. Consider spending even 5-10 minutes each day reading. Don’t forget, it’s absolutely okay to quit and choose another book. If you are feeling particularly ambitious, start a virtual book club!

6. Don’t “break up” with nature: When many recreational options closed temporarily during the pandemic, people spent much more time outdoors. As indoor recreational facilities reopen, it is important not to leave nature behind. The National Institutes of Health and Harvard Medical School say that, in addition to providing physical benefits, simply spending time in nature in any form can improve mental outlook, boost creativity, elevate mood due to natural light, improve concentration, and reduce stress. It may even help you sleep better. As indoor recreational facilities reopen, consider maintaining favorite outdoor activities, even simply dining outside. 7. Stay Safely Social: While it is important to protect your physical health and continue to follow masking and social distancing guidelines, it is also important to protect your mental health by finding safe ways to maintain social connections. There are many safe options to help keep isolation at bay. Consider scheduling video chats regularly, either once or twice per week. Try arranging for a large group chat on holidays. Maintain a connection with your elderly and other vulnerable loved ones by putting together care packages of supplies and treats. Deliver them in person so you can see the smiles, even if only through a window. Send uplifting messages in personalized cards to loved ones at home and in long-term care facilities. Don’t forget to let potentially isolated friends and family know they are cared for and loved. We also welcome you to drop us a note, whether by mail or email, because we always love to hear from our readers!

MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one.

“Not what we give, but what we share, for the gift without the giver is bare…”

~ James Russell Lowell Because the wise men brought gifts to the Infant King, we continue to celebrate Christmas by giving gifts. Gifts for children delight both the child and the donor. The child may not fully understand why he is being given so much but his enjoyment is always obvious and reward enough for the gift-giver. Where gifts are just expected and accepted as a matter of course, there is a real danger that the true spirit of giving will be lost. Let us try to give a bit of ourselves with every gift. Our entire staff wishes you and your family a Christmas that is not only significant, but Merry as well.

Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive.

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Establish an online memorial website. If you want to share stories, photos and anecdotes about your loved one with the world, a memorial website is a great way to do so. Create the site and share your own feelings before soliciting others to share their thoughts and anecdotes as well. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education.

Office - 538-2745 Cell - 585-259-5117 Pager - 527-7437 TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD Reward yourself. Don’t hesitate to reward yourself as you realize your short-term goals and draw closer to making your long-term goal a reality. For example, if weight loss is your goal and you’ve adhered to your diet and lost some weight, reward yourself with a favorite meal eaten in moderation.

The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.” Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia; • 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. Learn More: Additional information about COVID-19 and how it affects kidneys can be found at www.kidney.org/coronavirus.
