BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.

Make an Impression

Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. We Care About

We make your smile our number one priority!

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

A DENTAL SOLUTION FOR A BREATHING PROBLEM Like many other medical conditions, sleep apnea has different forms, each with its own treatment mode. Surprisingly, one of them comes from the dentist. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common form, occurs when the tongue and soft pallet block the sleepers’ airways, causing them to stop breathing multiple times during the night. Severe OSA may need to be treated with a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine, but mild to moderate OSA can often be addressed with a dental appliance that keeps the tongue from sliding back and blocking the airway. These devices are molded to the teeth of each individual patient by the dentist and may require a few visits to adjust the fit.

If you have questions about breathing problems and sleep apnea, be sure to discuss your concerns with us at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL. We bring you our weekly dental column in order to keep you up-to-date on the latest research, innovations, and procedures available in dentistry today and to inform our friends and neighbors here in Batavia how the many benefits of modern oral care can enhance their lives. New patients are always welcome at our state-of-theart office at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246 for an appointment.

P.S. Using a dental device to help with obstructed sleep apnea may result in bite changes, so a morning repositioner should be used to realign the bite.

DEAR SARAH: Big props to your neighbor for helping to take care of Sookie! Even on cold winter days, a few minutes outside can be uplifting for your dog. And a “relief,” if you know what I mean. If Sookie stays in the fenced yard and comes when you call her, it may be safe to let her out once or twice during the day. How long she stays out depends on her size and cold tolerance. Very small dogs should not be outside for more than a few minutes when it’s below freezing, and should be wrapped up to get warm again quickly. Medium and large dogs can tolerate longer periods. The colder the air and the more ferocious the weather, the less time they should spend outside. When your dog comes in, either from her morning walk or from the fenced yard, rub down her fur with a dry towel and check the underside of her paws for cuts and abrasions. If she is shivering when she comes in, make sure she warms up, and ask your neighbor to bring her in a little sooner. Make sure that Sookie has plenty of water to drink throughout the day: Staying hydrated will help her stay warm. Send your comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Say “I

You” to your Community: Shop Local for Valentine’s Day! By Amanda Dudek

I

t is no secret that 2020 left many local businesses struggling. In fact, in its September 2020 Economic Impact Report, popular review platform, Yelp, reported that 163,735 businesses had shut down by August 31st, 60% of them never to reopen. According to data from the Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs, employers with fewer than 100 workers account for 98.2% of all businesses. The clear majority, these “small” businesses are the backbone of our communities. “American business is overwhelmingly small business,” states the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council. That they are in such desperate straits is concerning, a fact with which many Americans agree, so much so that the plight of local businesses has kickstarted a shop local trend. According to Mint Personal Finance, a personal financial management company, 1 in 5 consumers were focused on shopping small businesses in the winter of 2020, and one third of shoppers bought more gift cards from these businesses. Heading into 2021, the trend has remained strong. Red Egg Marketing, a Colorado marketing agency, found that a resounding 83% of American consumers would prefer to purchase local products over national products, and 84% were willing to spend a bit more to do so. The reason? A survey by Mint Personal Finance reports consumers’ primary motivation is to keep money local, followed by supporting their community and local creators, a better service experience, and supporting nonprofits. Those remaining local shops, eateries, and other establishments have and continue to survive on the loyalty and mindful spending choices each of us make every day.

companies have become shopping habits for many consumers, and as with most habits, changing these patterns will take time, mindfulness, and perhaps a few new options.

Planning a special Valentine’s Day? Try one or more of our tips, and show some extra love to local businesses while you’re at it! • Budget for local shopping. This tip is so intuitively simple it’s easy to miss. Rather than merely hoping to remember to make a purchase or find necessities locally, just add local spending dollars to your monthly budget. Then, make it a point – and a pleasure – to spend those dollars locally as you see fit! Even a modest amount will make a difference. For example, if every family in the country spent just $10 locally each month, over $9.3 billion would stay local, according to United We Stand and Civic Economics Andersonville Study of Retail Economics. • Shop your favorite local businesses online. Have you searched for your favorite boutique online? Check again! For better or for worse, COVID-19 has changed the way people shop. During shutdowns, many items were only available online as brick-and-mortars temporarily closed their doors. Even now, as more and more businesses resume some open hours, many consumers continue to appreciate the convenience of online shopping. Fortunately, one faint silver lining was that temporary closures encouraged several of local retailers to take their business online. So, before you click on an online retailer, do a quick local search instead. You might be surprised!

Does shopping local really keep that much more money in my community? Absolutely! Shopping local keeps up to 4Xs as much money in your community than shopping at chains. According to multiple sources, at least 48% of every purchase at a local business is recirculated locally compared to just 14% of chain purchases and virtually 0% from online retailer purchases. As AMIBA (American Independent Business Alliance) puts it, “Buying remotely on the web creates almost no local benefit – just a few minutes’ work for a delivery person.” The difference is clear.

Ready to Shop Local? Check out our tips! Wait. Isn’t shopping local as simple as going to a local business and making a purchase? Well, yes and no. While we certainly hope you will frequent local businesses as much as possible, we recognize that shopping with online retailers as well as opting to shop at chain

• Share, share, and share some more! One of the best ways to support local businesses you love is by word-of-mouth and by click of mouse. Share photos of the items you love and tell everyone where you got them. Take a photo of yourself enjoying local businesses and share them to your social media. Invite friends and family members to like local businesses online. And of course, share the things you love by purchasing them as gifts for the people you love. ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

5 SEASONAL INVADERS AND HOW TO KEEP THEM OUT IN THE COLD As w inter rolls around, few people realize that pest invaders like rodents, cockroaches and nuisance w ildlife are just one foundation crack, open utility pipe entry point or broken basement w indow aw ay. The National Pest M anagement Assoc iation (NPM A) reminds homeow ners that the potential for pest infestations increases during the cold months of the year as pests seek shelter -- most often in people’s homes. House mice nest in dark, secluded attics and basements. In addition to carrying diseases and bacteria, causing indoor allergies and asthma attacks, they can also chew through dryw all and w ires, increasing the risk of electrical fires. Keep house mice from entering the house by sealing outside cracks and holes. It’s also important to keep basements and attics dry and clutter free to prevent nesting spots. Norw ay rats nest in basements, piles of debris and other undisturbed materials. They can gnaw through almost anything to obtain food and w ater. Like house mice, Norw ay rats also carry diseases and pose a risk of house fires. Fill any gaps or c rac ks on the outside of the home, and eliminate sourc es of moisture in c raw l spaces and basements. Raccoons often climb through chimneys or attics in search of a denning site, posing danger to humans. Not only can raccoons attack if they feel threatened w hile trapped indoors, but they are also a major host of rabies in the U.S. To repel raccoons, store w aste cans in sealed areas, or use an animalproof lid. Check the outside of your home for access points, repair loose siding or shingles, and use a mesh cover or cap for your chimney. German cockroaches live in small areas close to food and moisture. They can sneakily enter the home in bags and boxes, and c an contaminate food sources and spread bacteria. To defend against c oc kroac hes, keep c ounters and floors c lean. Vac uum frequently, and dispose of garbage regularly, paying spec ific attention under applianc es and sinks.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles On Medicare? Beware of COVID Card Scam Have you received a phone call asking if you’ve received your new “special” Medicare COVID card? Beware: There is no such thing. It’s a scam. I did receive such a call. The person on the other end asked if I’d received my new card, which I’d heard nothing about, and proceeded to try to ask me a number of questions. She claimed there are a lot of fancy benefits that come with the COVID card. In the name of research for this column, I did not hang up immediately as I usually do. Instead, I went along with the caller, listening but not providing any information. I asked where they’d gotten my name and was told they were accessing the Medicare database. I was quickly convinced it was a scam. I hung up and called the Medicare fraud line to report it. The fraud people were very glad I did. Other forms of COVID scams include offering fast eligibility for the vaccine, fake vaccine sign-up websites, fake testing and wellness kits, and fake contact tracers who want to know your Medicare card number. Fact: There is no new Medicare card for COVID. Fact: Medicare isn’t going to call you about anything unless you have called or written to them and asked them to contact you by phone. If you receive a call such as the one I got, hang up immediately and then call to report it. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227), or HHS at 1-800-447-8477. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

This Rapid Heartbeat Appears Normal on EKG --DEAR DR. ROACH: I had symptoms of lightheadedness, so my doctor ordered an EKG and sent me to a cardiologist. They did a heart monitor for a week and said I have inappropriate sinus tachycardia but that I don’t need any treatment. I’m still having symptoms. What can I do? -- B.V. ANSWER: Inappropriate sinus tachycardia is an uncommon diagnosis, most often seen in women in their 30s. The heart rate is fast (“tachycardia”), but on an EKG it appears normal, meaning it comes from the sino-atrial node, the natural pacemaker of the heart, hence “sinus.” The average heart rate must be over 90 for 24 hours. It’s important to be sure there isn’t another cause for the tachycardia, such as elevated thyroid levels, fever, volume depletion (dehydration) or anemia. The symptoms may continue for months or even years. Common symptoms include the lightheadedness you felt, but may also include palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness and decreased ability to exercise. The diagnosis can sometimes be confused with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), where the heart rate dramatically increases with changing to an upright position. A tilt-table test is the diagnostic tool for POTS. If there is no other reason for sinus tachycardia, then medication may be used to reduce symptoms. A beta blocker is the usual first choice, but there are others available. I found some more information at https://tinyurl.com/ ISTheart that may be useful for you. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a woman going crazy with hair loss. My hair has always been long and thick, but it is coming out in handfuls. I can only think it must be due to my blood pressure medicines. I’ve been taking amlodipine and lisinopril for years. I’m in good health and 90 years young. -- M. ANSWER: It is unlikely that the hair loss is due to either amlodipine or lisinopril. Neither of these are well described to provoke hair loss, and if a medicine is going to do that, it usually does within a few months. The most common cause of hair loss in a 90-year-old woman is female pattern hair loss, in which the hair loss is mostly on the front and top of the scalp. However, there are several causes of hair loss, and a dermatologist may be helpful in determining the cause and treatment. Please don’t stop taking your blood pressure medicine. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN by Dr. Bob Arnot (NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used. A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach. Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel. Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well. On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain. In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty. Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses. Dr. Arnot is board certified in internal medicine and an award-winning journalist, author of twelve books on nutrition and health and host of the Dr. Danger reality TV series. You can find more helpful healthcare and pain relief information from Dr. Arnot at https://us.hisamitsu/.

(NAPSI)—You may notice, when the weather turns colder, the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light on your dashboard lights up more frequently. The Car Care Council recommends checking your tire pressure regularly during the winter to help keep the TPMS light off and your vehicle safe. “It’s typical at this time of year for motorists to get TPMS warnings and then get worried about their tires,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Often drivers will see this in the morning when it’s coldest. If the temperature warms, the light could turn off but it’s likely that tires will still be a few pounds per square inch (PSI) underinflated. This is why it’s important to check tire pressure regularly.” According to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, for every 10 degree drop in temperature, tire pressure decreases one to two PSI. Checking the tire pressure is important for vehicle safety, tire life and gas mileage. Incorrect tire pressure can lower gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every one PSI drop in pressure of all four tires and improve fuel efficiency by up to 3.3 percent when the correct tire pressure is maintained. “Tire pressure should be checked at least monthly. It is important to note that newer cars with tire pressure monitoring systems may not alert you until the tire is significantly underinflated, so you may want to check it more frequently,” said White. “It is important to check tire pressure whenever there is a significant weather change and more often during the winter months.” The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.

Protect Your Diesel In Cold Weather Cold w eather can cause starting problem s in diesel vehicles because the fuel tends to gel. One w ay to com bat gelling is to use an anti-gelling additive. Using an additive can im prove engine start up in cold w eather, im prove cold flow by preventing gelling and w ill clean deposits from fuel injectors, com bustion cham bers, intake valves and piston crow ns. It’s easy to forget that basic m aintenance can prevent expensive repairs. Change your fuel filter. Using a dirty fuel filter can cause w ax crystals to collect, cutting off the fuel. Change your m otor oil and your oil filter. Depending on the clim ate w here you live, consider changing the viscosity of your oil to help flow during the cold w inter m onths. Engine dam age can occur if the m otor oil is too thick due to the cold and the flow is restricted to the engine. Billieve! Congratulations to the Buffalo uffalo uff alo Bills! Although they didn’t win the he AFC Championship that we were hoping for, they had an amazing season! Thank you for providing excitement and entertainment to an otherwise dreary few months. Thank you… To all those who check on their neighbors, run errands, write notes, and make phone calls to those who are housebound due to COVID or bad weather. It means a lot. Hats off Hats off to our GVPS Adult Carriers and Postal Workers that get our beloved Penny Saver delivered week in and week out during these Winter months laced with Covid.

How ‘bout them Browns! and Bills! A few decades ago, the Cleveland Browns were an extremely popular and followed team in Western New York, for a couple of reasons: they were pretty good and fun to watch; their games were picked up in the Rochester area and hence grew a fan base. Wonderful that they bested the Steelers two weeks in a row to make the playoffs. And the Bills almost making the Super Bowl was quite an accomplishment for such a young team. Both teams’ futures look bright!

Vaccines So sad to see the cupboard bare when it comes to vaccines. The past administration just could not come to grips with reality and now we continue to pay the price. Stay safe everyone and where your mask!

to change the trajectory.” Strange that NY, California and Chicago all magically decide to open back up? Some might even say American businesses and lives and educations were ruined for politcal gains. At least we won’t have mean tweets.

It’s going to be a long four years. The first week in office was a bust. Putting thousands out of work and the environment at risk by ending Keystone, opening the southern border and worst of all the answer for CV-19 is, “nothing we can do

Cheers! Cheers to Section 5 and the decision to have Winter sports at the High School level. If the teams cooperate with the Covid rules, they should be able to enjoy their sports!

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty. Page 37
