Exercise is a great w ay to maintain a healthy mind and body. M any people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose w eight or build musc le. Too often, how ever, men and w omen get stuck in an exercise rut, follow ing the same exercise routine w eek after w eek. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s nec essary to c hange an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason w hy many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few w eeks. Just w hen you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! W ith repetition, the body adapts and grow s accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose w eight. Changing your w orkout forces your body to w ork harder, producing better results. If you exercise w ith a trainer, discuss w ays to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Inc reased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your w orkouts may do the trick.

Bra measurements are hard to come by, no doubt thanks in part to the nature of getting measured in such an intimate area of the body. But considering undergarments set the foundation for all clothing worn on top, this is one of the more important measurements to verify. Enlist the help of a friend or family member to make measurements go more smoothly.

NO JOB TOO SMALL

585-636-4030 Do home improvement projects now, before winter The to-do chores never seem to go away, which can make you want to leave the projects for another season. After all, the deck is going to be covered by snow all winter and the house can always be repainted in the spring. But taking care of these jobs now has benefits beyond just crossing them off of your to-do list. For homeowners in areas of the country that have harsh winter weather, refinishing the deck this fall will help protect it from the winter elements like sleet, snow and ice. For those who live in milder climates, refinishing the deck now means you’ll still get to enjoy the fruits of your labor into the cooler months - and get a jump on spring chores. In addition, having your deck and your house in the best condition going into the rough winter months means that you’ll minimize any damage that could be caused by harsh weather conditions. To get the maximum benefits out of your efforts, take the time to make any necessary repairs to your deck or siding before you start painting. This could include patching any imperfections in your siding and sanding away peeling paint. On the deck, replace warped boards and nail down loose ones. A good cleaning ensures that the surface is ready for stain or paint. Once you’re ready to paint, make sure you have the right tools for the job. It will make the task quicker and easier, and provide more professional-looking results. Paint brushes and rollers have their place as useful tools, but for making quick work of painting a house or finishing a deck, nothing beats a power paint sprayer. The beauty of outdoor painting is that a paint sprayer can be used to get the job done in a few easy strokes.

WAYS TO IM PROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALL YEAR LONG As w inter w ears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold w eather climates to experience some cabin fever. W inter w eather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear. In addition to contributing to cabin fever, w inter w eather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. W hile air pollution is something most often associated w ith densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long w inters w hen w indow s are often closed for months at a time. Though open w indow s in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are w ays to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of w hich season it happens to be.

TIPS FOR EASY SNOW REMOVAL (NAPSI)—It’s the heart of winter, which means plenty of snow removal is in your future. Poorly maintained equipment and using the wrong clearing techniques can make shoveling or blowing your driveway and walkways a chore. Follow the tips below to make snow removal as easy as possible. Start Early and Shovel Often It’s easier to shovel an inch or two of fresh snow than half a foot of snow that’s densely packed. Shovel first thing in the morning and, if it continues to snow, go out every couple of hours to clear a few inches at various points throughout the day. Maintain Your Equipment If you didn’t perform maintenance on your snowblower before the winter season, it’s not too late. On gasoline-powered machines, check the oil level before each use. Inspect and change damaged or worn spark plugs, belts and shave plates. On all snowblowers, be sure to maintain proper tire pressure. After you’ve finished for the day, run the machine for a minute or so to clear out snow. Shovel the Right Way Shoveling to remove snow can be hard work, so protect your body and make the job a bit easier by pushing the snow instead of lifting it. To prevent aches and pains, keep your feet hip-width apart, bend your knees, keep your back straight and avoid twisting your torso if you must lift the snow. Finally, spray WD-40 Multi-Use Product on the shovel blade to prevent snow from sticking to it for easier transfer of snow from sidewalks and driveways. Learn about more uses for WD-40 Multi-Use Product around the home and find it at a store near you at WD40.com.

Hyper, Yelping Terrier Is Handful During Walks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A have a wiry little terrier named “Chip” who is well-behaved inside. However, when it’s time for his daily walk, he begins barking nonstop by the door. When I take him outside on the leash, he keeps barking, and pulls hard on the leash. So much so that he almost hurts himself when the collar digs into his neck. Then he’ll yelp, as if I had hurt him. It’s embarrassing to walk with this hyper, yelping little dog. How can I get him to calm down? -- Charity G., Albany, New York DEAR CHARITY: An energetic dog can be frustrating to handle, but don’t lose hope. You can work with Chip to improve his behavior. First, order Chip a properly sized halter online, and use this on walks. A halter will spread out the contact points across the stronger parts of his little body. This will prevent injury when Chip pulls against the leash. Halters also are much more comfortable; the uncomfortable collar may be stressing him out. I’d like you to look up a dog trainer in your area who specializes in small dogs, who can be little tornados on a good day. Many trainers are adapting their lessons to an online format, so you can meet with them at home over a conferencing app like Zoom or Google Meet. While you’re waiting for that first session, start working on reinforcing Chip’s basic behavioral training. Work with him at home on the commands “come,” “sit,” “stay” and “lie down.” During walks, work with him on “heel,” “sit” and “stay.” These training sessions also will help Chip work off some of that energy, and he’ll be thrilled with all the attention he’s getting, too. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

M any elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars runn ing smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentiall y dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.

Winter can be a beautiful time of year, particularly when freshly fallen snow blankets the landscape. However, winter is also a time fraught with potential peril. The same winter weather that makes landscapes so pristine can make roads and walkways - and even being outside dangerous. The U.S. Department of Transportation says weatherrelated vehicle crashes killed 6,253 people last year and injure more than 480,000 per year. These accidents most often occur when roadways are wet, snowy or icy. Yet, winter driving is not the only seasonal hazard.

www.landltransmissions.com DEFENSIVE DRIVING TIPS

Traction is Key

(NAPSI)—These five tips can help you be prepared for the perils of the road. 1. Know Your Car. Like people, each car has a unique personality. Some features work better than others, and conditions can cause a vehicle to react a certain way. Knowing your car’s limits and behavior patterns can help you predict how it will respond in certain situations. How long does it take you to stop and how much pressure is required on the brake pedal? What’s your turn radius? Does your vehicle lean when you round a corner? Does it quake when you hit a certain speed? Knowing the answers can help you avoid accidents. 2. Use Extreme Caution During a Lane Change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that one of the most common causes of two-lane auto accidents is unsafe lane changes.

With hazardous w inter w eather ahead, now is not the tim e to ignore your tires. For optim um traction to navigate harsh w inter conditions w ith confidence, consider installing a set of w inter tires on your vehicle. There is a w ide range of w inter tires to help m eet the driving needs of virtually every consum er. Winter tires are typically designed w ith a specialized rubber com pound that m aintains its flexibility in cold w eather. This helps the tire to adapt to the road surface and dig into snow and ice.

calls Auto We doinservice LeRoy! Satisfaction!

3. Know Your Blind Spots. Most cars have at least one line of vision that’s not clearly evident in the rearview or side mirrors. Even carefully placed mirrors often cannot cover every possible angle. Move the side mirrors far outward so that the angle of view barely overlaps the view of the rearview mirror.

Complete Automotive Repair The goal of owner, Jamie Merica, is your complete satisfaction!

4. Keep Your Hands on the Wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now advocates keeping your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions instead of 10 and 2 because of air bags. 5. Keep Up on Maintenance. Routine work on your auto, like oil changes, fluid refills and tire rotations, can make all the difference in your car’s drivability. LeRoy Retired Cafeteria Worker, Marianita Beckman, Meets the World with Love BY ANTHONY BECKMAN

M

y brother, Nicholas, and I consider ourselves blessed to have grown up under the loving influence of our mother. Marianita Beckman is an angel, former nurse and a LeRoy High School cafeteria worker. Her ability to face the world with positivity and love for others has always seemed like a mysterious power. She acknowledges the inspiration of her mother, aunts, and teachers who impacted her in her youth. Still, what makes her an angel is not that she follows in the footsteps of others, but the unconditional love and caring spontaneously from her own heart. Her name, Marianita, is a combination of her mother’s, Mary, and her grandmother’s, Anita. When asked who inspired her to be so loving, without hesitation Marianita says her mother has been her guiding light. She “never uttered a sour word about another person,” my mother says. “She was always generous with her time – putting others ahead of herself.” She inspired Marianita with her commitment and selflessness, doing whatever it took to ensure her children and husband had a good life. Marianita took up that mantle as a young mother herself. She tells me, “When you were born, although you took forever to come out, I knew right away that I was going to be a good mother, that I was going to take care of you and your brother.” True to her word, my mother created a home filled with love and kindness. She welcomed each of our friends in as if they were her own children. Having friends at our house for dinners and sleepovers was a regular occurrence. Through her actions we learned the value of respect, kindness, justice, and seeing the best in others – even if they didn’t see it in themselves. My grandmother stepped away from a career to settle down in her 30s and raise a family. Likewise, Marianita left behind her desire to be a teacher to commit herself to motherhood. Her best friend, Gerri O’Brien, told me that Marianita enjoyed sports and wanted to become a gym teacher. My mother quickly confirmed this, explaining that she had wanted to go to college and become a physical education teacher. The circumstances of the time and her father, Armando’s, mindset didn’t allow for her to go.

Maria Beckman stands between her sons Nicholas (left) and Anthony (right) at her surprise party for her 60th birthday!

She loves her parents unconditionally and understands the hard choices they made as first and second-generation immigrants. They did the best they could, and she is grateful for the love they showed her. As her parents aged, she didn’t hesitate to serve as the primary caregiver for them. She would work her shift at the nursing home and come home to care for them. For my wife Jolene and I, Marianita’s love and support has been instrumental. When we were married, my mother and my dad, George Beckman, took our then 4-year-old son, Dylan, for a week and devoted every minute to caring for and entertaining him. She came alive with the opportunity to build a relationship with her grandson. When our twin daughters, Sophie and Amelia were born, Marianita took two full weeks off work, dropped everything in her own life, and moved in with us. She took over the household responsibilities, allowing me

to work and Jolene to focus on the newborns Sophie and Amelia, Dylan, and recovery. We will forever be grateful for her support and love. It wasn’t long afterwards that my parents moved from Long Island to LeRoy, and she took a position as a nurse with the Veterans Administration facility in Batavia. Whether at a sporting event, orchestra concert, mock trial, or a Quiz bowl final - Sophie and Amelia’s Grandma is a LeRoy Central School District loving and supportive fan. Her honors beloved cafeteria worker, children and grandchildren Marianita Beckman! aren’t the only ones she supports with all her heart. After retiring from nursing after over 20 years, Marianita took up a job as a cafeteria worker at LeRoy High School. She quickly became a beloved member of the school staff, having the school’s yearbook dedicated to her for her boundless school spirit and generous nature. This year, when the global COVID-19 pandemic challenged “The energy the LeRoy schools to continue to provide meals for its students and to love families, Marianita volunteered unconditionally to be out on the front lines, preparing and handing out meals. comes from Marianita brought her energetic within her.” spirit to the food distributions, dancing and singing to the music - Anthony Beckman the school played. She put on a happy face in spite of sometimes distressing experiences. When I asked Gerri if my mother ever got burned out, she told me, “I’m sure there may have been a point where she wanted to shut down, but her thoughts of you and Nicholas and all the kids keep her joy alive.” The energy to love unconditionally comes from within her. As Mother and I wrapped up a conversation recently, I asked if she feels driven to help others. She was perplexed by the question, saying, “It’s not a drive. It’s just what I do.” After a pause, she continued, “If I see a need, I try to help.” Like her mother, Marianita is an inspiration. She meets the world as it is, asking nothing more from it. She pours love into the world. There is no mystery to solve, no motives to understand. She is not driven to give out of obligation; she simply embodies the spirit of love. In the Bible, there is a verse “Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14). My mother told me that she’s never had an aspiration to save the world; that’s not how she thinks about it. I am beginning to understand what she means. The world doesn’t need saving. It just needs love. Enjoy this article? Thank you, kind sir Imagine my surprise! The man that I thought was the store manager or owner went to get me a product I needed that wasn’t on the shelf. When he got back to me with it, I thanked him and went to the store cashier to pay for it. The cashier told me the other man already paid for it. Come to find out, the man wasn’t the store manager or owner. He was another customer! I tried to go thank him, but he was long gone. Not only had he paid for it, but apparently, he went in his own car to another store to buy it! Wow! What great kindness to experience in the holiday season! Thank you, kind sir! I wish you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! - Signed, an Old Woman in Need

Thank you, sisters I want to thank my sisters in Christ for the “gifts” from the bottom of my heart. You brought tears to my eyes and emphasized what I’ve known all along. God is good. Thanks again. Peace & Happiness in the New Year to you all. Community Generosity The Gilbert family on North St. in Caledonia would like to give a massive thank you this Holiday Season. There were many factors this year that caused our family to struggle, and although we did the best we could, of course, it was still hard. Our community came together like nothing I have ever seen before in order to ensure we had an amazing Christmas. I would

accommodate a 6-7-foot tree. A tree that size should be no more than $45, especially if you were the one to saw it down. I’m a person that would never get a fake tree. I have always had real trees. So, if you think the Christmas tree, you’re buying is too expensive, don’t be too timid to say something about it. If you don’t, next year the same size tree will cost you more. Learn how to treat others You just have love people who don’t have one ounce of common decency who then boohoo about people not having any respect for anyone. They are rude and obnoxious. The only vocabulary they know only consists of fourletter words, added with gestures that really make them appear to have lost all of their marbles. They lack good manners, refinement, and grace. To everyone at Cooper Vision that bought gifts for a family (that you did not know) during a struggling world right now: I could never thank you enough. Also, to Joan Marie, the Angry Rooster, and everyone in Caledonia that assisted with the gifting tree: thank you! This is a Christmas we will never forget.

Kudos Livingston County Department of Health Hats off to the Livingston County Department of Health! On December 12th, the Health Department held a ‘drive thru COVID-19 test site,” which my husband and I attended. The system they established was efficient and successful and ran like a ‘well-oiled machine.’ Staff and all who worked the event were professional, pleasant, competent, and caring. about how people have no respect for one another. Well, they need to respect others around them. Ever heard “practice what you preach?” They are very bad examples for young ones. They should be ashamed of themselves, but they don’t see that they are really hurting themselves in the long run. Please slow down Thanks go out to the Livingston County Highway Department for resurfacing our county road this summer. They did a great job, but it has now become somewhat of a speedway. It seems like everyone is in quite a hurry, and unfortunately, a few days ago, our beloved family cat was hit and killed near our home.... not saying that speed was a factor but it could have been. Please slow down on our country roads. Merry Christmas to all and hoping that 2021 will be a much better year for all of us.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Raynaud’s Patient: Can Viagra Help Cold Fingers --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have scleroderma with Raynaud’s phenomenon, and friends and family members have told me that I might get help from Viagra. Frankly, I hadn’t read or heard that from either my rheumatologists or dermatologists. I already tried a short course of nifedipine over a decade ago (it just gave me a headache), so I just stick with mechanical means to keep my hands warm in winter and, maybe surprisingly to some, in summer. Believe me, air-conditioned grocery stores are torture from April to October. -- M.A.P. ANSWER: Raynaud’s phenomenon is an excessive response of the blood vessels in the skin to changes in temperature, and sometimes to emotional stress. While most people will get cold hands and feet when it is cold, a person with Raynaud’s can get a drastic response, even to air conditioning or freezer sections of grocery stores. The skin will turn white and then blue, then quite red on being rewarmed. Not everybody goes through all three colors, however. Raynaud’s can exist by itself, but is often seen in the presence of autoimmune conditions, such as the systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) you have. Treatment for Raynaud’s is generally the same with or without other conditions. Everybody with Raynaud’s should quit smoking and avoid medications that can trigger an attack (over-the-counter cold and flu remedies are the most common). The mainstay of treatment is avoiding the temperature changes wherever possible, but as you point out clearly, it’s almost impossible to do so completely. Putting your hand in a refrigerator or holding a cold drink can trigger an attack. Many people with Raynaud’s learn to keep gloves with them all the time and dress their entire body warmly. An attack can sometimes be aborted by rubbing hands in warm water or getting them into a warm place. When medication treatment is necessary, a calcium channel blocker like nifedipine is often the first choice. Headache and dizziness can limit effectiveness of this treatment. Studies have shown these medications can cut the attacks by about 50%. Sildenafil (Viagra) has been used in people with Raynaud’s, and is about as effective as calcium channel blockers. However, for people with scleroderma, ulcers and Raynaud’s, sildenafil has been shown in small trials to be very effective.

Personalized Cardiac Care with a Focus on Wellness & Prevention

As the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, it’s imperative that people everywhere take every step necessary to protect themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that a flu vaccine will not protect people against COVID-19. However, flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of illness related to the flu. Those illnesses weaken people’s immune systems, making them more vulnerable to other viruses, including COVID-19.

Dr. Guler’s calm and caring approach to patient care creates an effective doctor-patient relationship. His personalized approach includes nutritional education, promoting physical and mental well-being and healthy lifestyle choices.

WHY THE FLU SHOT IS SO IMPORTANT IN 2020

Flu vaccines have also been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization. That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their flu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources. Many people may be concerned about going out and getting a flu shot in 2020. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health and the health of your family.

THREE WAYS TO RELIEVE ARTHRITIS PAIN

We Care About

by Dr. Bob Arnot (NAPSI) — Over the course of my career as a physician, chief medical correspondent and war correspondent, I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of pain management drugs and approaches. One thing I’ve seen is that the United States is much more reliant on taking pills for pain than the rest of the world, where topical analgesics, physical therapy and other approaches are more widely used.

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

THE DENTAL DAMAGE OF EATING DISORDERS Eating disorders can wreak havoc on every system in the body, but their effects on dental health are often overlooked. Stomach acid from frequent vomiting erodes tooth enamel, weakening it and making teeth brittle, possibly causing them to fall out. It can also damage the soft palate and result in painful enlargement of the salivary glands. Lack of nutrition can cause bleeding in the gums and other soft tissue inside the mouth. Tissue loss both inside the mouth and around the lips is also possible. Tooth decay and gum disease specifically can be caused by lack of calcium and the vitamin D required for the body to absorb it, iron, and B vitamins.

Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large was the 1st topical approved by the FDA and provides relief for up to 12 hours. It begins to work in one hour and can provide clinically meaningful pain relief in the first day. Since it is a patch, the medicine is pre-measured and easy to apply. Not only does this patch help relieve arthritis pain, but it also works for back, muscle and joint pain as well. On the other hand, Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel is not labeled for immediate relief and may take up to 7 days to help achieve relief. To apply this gel, you must first measure out an amount based on a dosing card. Voltaren is effective for up to 6 hours and should only be used for arthritis pain.

Also helpful are hot and cold compresses. Heat is good for joint stiffness and cold compresses can ease joint pain. Just remember, don’t apply heat to a joint that’s already hot. If you feel a burning sensation in your joint, cool it with the cold compresses.

www.bataviafamilydental.com

Fortunately, if you are an arthritis sufferer and want effective relief, there are two topicals that are FDA approved the same way Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium and other prescription pain medicines have been through the demanding new drug application process. While both help relieve arthritis pain, it is important to know the differences between Salonpas Pain Relief Patch Large and Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel.

In addition to topical relief, joint and muscle pain can be treated with physical therapy. It can keep stiff joints from getting stiffer, reduce strain on joints during daily activities and help you get back to normal life without pain or difficulty.

P.S. Some of the damage eating disorders cause to the teeth and soft tissue of the mouth can be reversible, but much of it is permanent and may require expansive dental care including crowns and extractions.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A problem with pills is that many of them come with side effects that can be severe, especially if the medications are used in greater quantities or for longer than they’re supposed to be. That’s one reason for back, muscle and joint pains, I believe it’s best to start with topicals. What’s more, the Centers for Disease Control, the American College of Rheumatology and other medical experts agree it’s a safer approach.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS

Champion Moving Local & Long Distance Services

Small businesses benefit one another, as a 2017 report from the Canadian firm FreshBooks found that 66 percent of small businesses outsource services to other small businesses.

SHOPPERS SAVE BIG ON GROCERIES WITH HEALTHY SAVINGS® POWERED BY AARP FOUNDATION

100 Owens Rd., Brockport

(NAPSI) — Good nutrition is important at any age. But for older adults on a tight budget, regular access to nutritious foods can be limited—and expensive.

585-235-3500 www.champion-moving.com NYS DOT#-11083

A new program aims to change that by making it easier to get healthy foods at the local grocery store for an affordable price. With Healthy Savings® powered by AARP Foundation, shoppers pay a small fee of $4.99 per calendar year for a card that can save them up to $200 a month on groceries. The program is part of AARP Foundation’s work to help people over 50 with limited income eat more nutritious foods, ultimately improving their well-being. Research shows that more than 10 million older adults don’t get enough nutritious food on a daily basis, most often because they can’t afford it.

Fair Housing Statement All real estate advertised in the Genesee Valley Penny Saver is subject to the Federal Fair Housing Act, which makes it illegal to advertise any preference, limitation, or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, age, marital status, handicap, familial status, or national origin, or intention to make any such preference, limitation or discrimination. We will not knowingly accept any advertising for real estate which is in violation of the law. Fair Housing Enforcement Project Monroe County Legal Assistance Center 1 W. Main Street Rochester, NY 14614 (585) 325-2500 • www.lawny.org

Eating healthy is about more than affordability, however. Not only does Healthy Savings reduce costs, it also identifies healthy options in the store. All products available through Healthy Savings are scored against the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index to make sure they qualify as nutritious. The index makes it convenient to choose the healthiest foods, which include lean meats, eggs, yogurt, whole grains, and a wide range of other options. The typical over-50 diet scores low in key food groups like whole grains and dairy. By encouraging the purchase of more of these nutrients through coupon discounts, Healthy Savings can help older adults: • Lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. • Reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. • More easily manage a chronic disease. • Increase or maintain energy levels. Shoppers who sign up for Healthy Savings receive a card in the mail and can download a mobile app, both of which can be used at 22,000 grocery stores across the U.S. for instant savings at checkout. The savings come on top of any from store loyalty cards and manufacturers’ coupons (so long as coupons don’t add up to more than the price of the item). Each week, new coupons are automatically loaded onto the card and app—no coupon clipping required. Over the course of a year, Healthy Savings can save shoppers as much as $2,400. More information, including recipes and tips for shopping smart, is at aarpfoundation.org/save.

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning provides time to make the best decisions. Men and women who preplan their funerals have ample time to decide just what they want their memorial services to be like and how they want to fund those services. Men and women trusted to make those decisions upon the death of a loved one will need to make those decisions more quickly and likely won’t be in the correct frame of mind to make decisions that will honor their loved one’s legacy.

Carol F. Hendrick December 29, 2020 December 29, 2020 at age 78. Predeceased by her brother, James Yandow; parents, Rita and Robert Yandow. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Arthur; their children, Robert (Tambra), Thomas (Shelly), William (Valerie) Hendrick; 7 grandchildren; sister, Janet Essom; and two nephews. Service and interment will be held privately. Memorials may be made to the Goveland Fire Department, P.O. Box 49, Groveland, NY 14462. To share a memory or leave a condolence please visit: alhartfuneralhome.com

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING An aspect of estate planning concerns funeral arrangements. Many people prefer to make their own funeral and burial plans so that these heart-wrenching decisions do not fall on the shoulders of grieving family members. Funeral planning may include choosing a burial plot, selecting a casket, indicating cremation, and paying for everything in advance so there is no financial burden on surviving family members.

“Affluence without simplicity is a giant trap. Every saint who ever lived, lived simply… not because he was holier but because he was smarter…”

~ Quoted in Christian Science Monitor

No matter how much material things we acquire, most of us want more. We can recite quite a list of things we think we’d enjoy having if only we could afford them. The world’s wealthiest people are the first to admit that money cannot buy happiness. The smartest people have learned that the mere accumulation of things will not bring lasting satisfaction. Why not be content to live as the smartest saints do… simply. We are always available to help in any way that is needed. We help individuals to make funeral arrangements both at time of need or well in advance of need. How can we help you?

TURN YOUR HOME INTO THE ULTIMATE

Staycation Destination While vacations sound like the best chance to unwind, planning a trip out of town -- and getting there – can sometimes be more hassle than it’s worth. Here’s how to turn your home into a staycation “destination” that can be enjoyed any time you feel like it:

Upgrade Bedding: Give your bedroom

a five-star hotel-grade makeover so you can enjoy that quality of rest found only on vacation. Shop for percale linens and high-quality pillows and invest in window treatments that block out sound and light, so you can awaken when you choose to, not when the sun or neighbors intervene.

Create a Spa-Like Bathroom: Find your

bliss by creating a spa-like retreat in your bathroom. Start by clearing unsightly clutter and using coordinating dispensers for bath products. Paint the walls in a hue that promotes relaxation -- think earthy tones, blues and greens, then add plants or fresh flowers for a pop of vibrant color. Dimmer switches, waterproof speakers and a waterfall showerhead with different spray settings are just a few updates offering you flexibility to create different moods, all which can connect to a smart home device that remembers your preferences. For that warm, cozy feeling right out of the bath or shower, add in-floor heating and a towel warming drawer.

Add Backyard Touches: Show your

backyard some love with a little landscaping and a few touches that replicate that vacation feel. An outdoor bar and kitchen can give you a dedicated place to wine and dine without having to constantly go in and out of the house. Install a hammock for long afternoons spent with a book.

Explore Financing Options: When it

comes to transforming your home into the ultimate destination, you won’t want to cut corners on what matters most to you, whether that’s opting for the superior flat screen TV or getting just the right coffee table to complete the look of your living room. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

To that end, check out easy and convenient financing options that offer buying empowerment and flexibility. In some cases, you can take advantage of even longerterm promotional financing offers, ranging from 12 to 60 months. Being able to pay off home purchases with convenient monthly payments can make life easier, helping you manage cash flow and compartmentalize spending on all things home. Make “getting away from it all” as simple as taking a bath or enjoying a blockbuster from the comfort of home. With smart renovation strategies, you can be sure you’re getting exactly what you want and need to truly relax. (StatePoint)

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes.

All interviews begin upon receipt of application Application and information available: www.yorkcsd.org

“People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful.

Send cover letter, resume, and application to: York Central School Att: Heidi Newcomb, District Office P.O. Box 102 • 2578 Genesee Street • Retsof, NY 14539

Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

Math is an important subject and school and proficiency in arithmetic serves people well when it comes time to leave the classroom and enter the workforce. As demand for workers proficient in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics continues to grow, students can benefit by working as hard as possible when studying such subjects. People with strong math skills who thrive on data and crunching numbers may find a diverse array of jobs available to them when they are ready to enter the workforce, providing an entryway into a lucrative and stable career.

RESOLVE TO WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT IN THE YEAR AHEAD Many people struggle to find the right size clothing, shoes and undergarments. It’s a situation that affects both men and women. Consider these facts: • Research by menswear retailer Jacamo found 22 percent of British men are wearing the wrong size clothes or shoes. • A recent international study done by Swiss lingerie company Triumph found that, of the 10,000 women polled, 64 percent are wearing the incorrect bra size. • The average shoe size is up about two sizes since the 1970s. Yet, at least one-third of men and half of women are buying the wrong size, according to Long Tall Sally, a U.K.-based apparel and footwear retailer that gets almost half its sales from North America. Many people today purchase their clothing off the rack and never step inside a tailor’s shop unless it is to have formal clothing adjusted for special occasions. People generally give little thought to taking out the measuring tape and getting a refresher on their measurements - despite changes in their body weights. Plus, many do not recheck their shoe sizes, likely because shoe stores are mostly self-service and the number of Brannock devices, or the standard foot measuring tool for the worlds footwear industry, are dwindling in retail centers.
