There is a great deal of wisdom in Dr. Johnson’s epigram. For those who might not be familiar with any words he used, Dr. Johnson is remembered chiefly as a lexicographer, and developed one of the first authoritative dictionaries.

Johnson tells us that if we want to eliminate a bad habit, it is easier to abstain entirely than try to practice moderation. Once we have conditioned ourselves to make the effort, we’ll find it as easy to abstain as to “cut down”…a practice which only serves to keep our bad habit alive.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895. They then compared birth and death information with those centenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenarians were born between September and November. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER According to the automotive retailer Pep Boys, vehicle tires lose a pound of air pressure for every 10-degree drop in temperature. Many modern cars will alert to changes in air pressure, and drivers should be diligent in maintaining the proper tire pressure. Fuel economy as well as handling ability can decline when tires are not inflated properly. Tires can be refilled at many gas stations for little cost.

Brakes Shocks & Struts

In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today. Page 10

REDUCE DISTRACTIONS BEHIND THE WHEEL

Former Brockport Man is Impacting Homelessness in Rochester BY AMANDA DUDEK

S

ix years ago, an encampment on Rochester’s South Avenue, which served as housing for an estimated 30-35 people who were homeless, was bulldozed. It was a scene that caught the attention of Michael Gill, a SUNY Brockport graduate and former Brockport resident who now resides in Rochester. After a little over a year of investigating the homeless situation in Rochester, Gill decided to work on solving the housing crisis by establishing Homes 4 the Homeless. “The purpose of this group is to raise awareness of the plight of millions of Americans who suffer chronic homelessness,” said Gill. “I found there was a need for more services directed towards the most difficult people to service: those who refuse or cannot function in emergency housing or structured environment.” It was at that time that Gill, a retired civil servant and self-identified workaholic, connected with what he calls “a new and exciting emergency shelter.” He refers to a shelter established by a group called REACH, which was intended to be a temporary, stop-gap measure to serve those who were homeless for the winter while House of Mercy was being remodeled. The REACH shelter is now in its 5th year. Another housing organization with which Gill works is PCHO (Person Centered Housing Options) which administers a HUD program entitled Housing First. “The solution to homelessness is housing,” Gill stated simply. “PCHO supports the disabled and chronically homeless (homeless for 12 of the past 36 months) as opposed to those experiencing episodic homelessness.” PCHO clients pay a percentage of their housing costs and are assigned a social worker for case management. “Reduced rent coupled with 20 hours of support each month makes a world of difference,” Gill continued. “It is amazing how quickly a client’s attention can be directed to getting things done when they are no longer focused on finding a place to sleep each night. This over ten-year-old program has proven effective with its approximately 70% success rate.” Also focusing primarily on those who are chronically homeless, Gill established Homes 4 the Homeless to create temporary housing Rochester. “We are offering self-shelter on the street,” he explained. “I saw a gap in homeless services. Many people cannot stay in a shelter environment due to such things as anxiety and lack of social skills, so I established an encampment called Peace Village. We are currently transitioning from tents to transitional pods.” The village is located on a lot which the city designated in Downtown Rochester, near necessary services yet relatively secluded. “People without homes have been harassed,” shared Gill. “They need privacy, not sightseers passing by.” Gill was recognized this year with a Jefferson Award for his outstanding volunteerism which he credits to the hundreds of people who have been involved over the last four years.

Michael Gill, founder of Homes 4 the Homeless

Last Easter, many of those who were homeless in Rochester were moved into local hotels thanks to a combination of social service and C.A.R.E.S. Act monies. “We brought in about 150 people at first, eventually adding about 50 more, and we have housed over 100 of them,”

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

shared Gill. “As long as funding continues, we will be able keep the rest here until we can house them all.” Gill sees these services and Peace Village as part of process. “This is not a permanent solution for any one individual,” he explained. “I started this to help people get on their feet again, and as a leader at the encampment, REACH and PCHO, I have seen that a lack of affordable, up-to-code housing is the primary reason for homelessness. Once people have a roof over their heads, miraculously, other positive things happen. We know we have succeeded because they do not return.”

Serving those in need with Homes 4 the Homeless!

The plight of those who are homeless should not and cannot be ignored. “Homeless people are people, too, just without housing,” said Gill. “Those who are chronically homeless almost always have extenuating mental, physical and emotional health issues. While they are without housing, they are almost certainly not being treated for those issues.” Gill cited a study by a professor at Nazareth which found that chronic homelessness reduces the lifespan of a male by 25%, a female by 50%. “People are healthier if they live indoors,” Gill said. “It costs the health system 4 times or more to ignore a person than to put them in housing. Housing is healthcare.” Thankfully, Gill has generally found that most people’s hearts go out to those who are homeless. “People want to help, but they are not sure how,” he explained, noting that donated items and food stuffs are not preferred due to lack of storage. “We serve potluck dinners three days a week for those who are homeless, so all you have to do to make a difference is bring a dish to pass. If you are willing and able to do more, I can direct you to additional ways to volunteer.” Enjoy this article? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I know it’s a running joke that cats rule people and not the other way around. But if cats can’t stand people, why did they become domesticated in the first place? How did that happen? -Trisha G., San Bernadino, California DEAR TRISHA: While cats seem aloof and rarely fawn over people in the same way that dogs do, they do love their humans. They express their devotion in ways that are weird to us -- like quietly placing a dead mouse in front of us and sitting expectantly until their triumph is acknowledged. Or, like bumping their forehead against our hand, or even our nose. Or meowing incessantly when we’re in the bathroom, worried that we will never come out. When cats were domesticated -scientists think that happened about 12,000 years ago -- they approached humans for much the same reasons that dogs did. There was food available. Cats, like dogs, earned their keep: dogs by keeping watch over their humans, and cats by protecting their food. When humans developed agriculture and began storing grain, rodents became the bane of their existence. Cats, on the other hand, saw a smorgasbord of tasty rats on the menu. Over time, they became domesticated, and our symbiotic existence was cemented. Cats were revered by ancient societies, and yes, jokes about cats ruling the household are probably as old as the early Egyptian pharaohs. Their behavior -- as territorial hunters who move quietly and strike quickly -probably did not need to change as dramatically as wild dogs’ behavior had to evolve. Yet, they did become tame and companionable as well -- although much more aloof. Archaeologists and sociologists have studied the domestication of cats quite a bit, because it helps to answer many questions about ancient peoples. In a way, it helps to outline why cats today behave the way they do.

BREAST CANCER PREVENTION

Summer ends, and Autumn comes, and he who would have it otherwise would have high tide always and a full moon every night; and thus he would never know the rhythms that are at the heart of life.

Avoiding risk factors and increasing protective factors may help prevent cancer. RISK FACTORS: • Older age • A personal history of breast cancer or benign (noncancer) breast disease • Inherited risk of breast cancer • Dense breasts • Exposure of breast tissue to estrogen made in the body • Taking hormone therapy for symptoms of menopause • Radiation therapy to the breast or chest • Obesity • Drinking alcohol PROTECTIVE FACTORS: • Less exposure of breast tissue to estrogen made by the body • Taking estrogen-only hormone therapy after hysterectomy, selective estrogen receptor modulators, or aromatase inhibitors and inactivators • Estrogen-only hormone therapy after hysterectomy • Selective estrogen receptor modulators • Aromatase inhibitors and inactivators • Risk-reducing mastectomy • Ovarian ablation • Getting enough exercise • It is not clear whether the following affect the risk of breast cancer: • Oral contraceptives • Environment • Studies have shown that some factors have little or no effect on the risk of breast cancer. • Cancer prevention clinical trials are used to study ways to prevent cancer. • New ways to prevent breast cancer are being studied in clinical trials. PHYSICAL LABOR A big thank you to all landscapers! You so deserve more credit! We appreciate your work while we do believe you deserve better wages! Some would sit on unemployment! Thanks!

THANK YOU TOPS IN HAMLIN! I want to express my appreciation to Aaron at Tops in Hamlin for being so diligent when it comes to cleaning the shopping carts

during this pandemic. Over the months, I know there are others who also participate in making sure that the carts are sanitized, so I want to thank them as well. It may be a task that seems to be never ending and one that goes unnoticed, and that is why I wanted to express my appreciation for a job well done. I have been to another grocery store chain, and I have never seen anyone clean or sanitize the shopping carts. So, hats off to Aaron and the others who day in and day out clean the grocery carts for our protection.

DON’T BE SURPRISED! I had to respond to the recent “support” of loud music from neighbors being okay. Obviously, it was written by neighbors that have no sense of common courtesy. I bet if I cranked music all day next to their house, they would be the first to complain! You do not get to decide what others have to listen to. Want to take a nap? Nope! Music! Want to keep the baby asleep? Nope! Music! Want to enjoy a movie? Nope! Music! You now get to have an extra soundtrack added to your show. There are laws on noise for a reason - people like you! The beauty of this infraction: I get to call the cops, and you would not even hear them coming! The evidence would be deafening!

ENOUGH MUSIC Enough is enough is enough (lyrics in a song) …about music. With so many horrendous things happening in the world, music is the least of one’s worries. If you live in an apartment, then go to management and complain, if you cannot go to the neighbor. Life was simpler when you could engage in conversation with a neighbor and let them know if something bothered you. You could share life stories and talk about the kids and grandkids.... your aching knees, and broken backs. Neighbors were really neighbor’s, not just in name only. They smiled and waved and took an interest in other’s in the neighborhood. They responded when you were in need and crisis. They were there

at your children’s weddings and d were joyous at the arrival of your ur grandchildren.

ROAD COURTESY Thank you to all York waterline pipe installers working on Linwood Rd., Federal Rd., Limerick Rd., and Anderson Rd. for your courtesy with the school bus. You always cleared the way for me and never made us wait. You kept me on schedule. You are appreciated. You all always smiled. York Bus #42.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County lawn problems as I drive around our area. Stressed lawns are generally those that invite the growth of fungus. Stresses include high heat and humidity, wet conditions, mowing too low and/or too frequently, overly thick layer of thatch (layer of organic matter between soil and grass blades). There are a multitude of fungi that are common in cool season grasses (Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescues, and Perennial Ryegrass). In some cases, a fungicide may be called for, but generally it is most useful as This summer, our lawns have been higha preventative. Usually, when the weather ly stressed, and I have observed many becomes more favorable for the lawn and There are sections in my lawn that look dark gray or black. When you get closer is appears to be tiny little spots of something like a fungus growing on the blades or grass. They are all over my lawn. Can you tell me what they might be and how I can get rid of them? Are thy dangerous to my small dog? - Kimberly L.

less favorable for disease, the grass will recover without a fungicide. From the photos sent along with this question, it appears to me that the fungus in this case is a slime mold. Although it looks ugly when it forms white, gray, or purplish spore masses on grass blades, it is not a parasite but feeds on microorganisms in the soil and thatch, and is simply using the blades for support. It doesnít kill the grass and will go away without treatment when conditions change. Perhaps you can just mow the affected areas to get rid of it. Even

if I am incorrectly diagnosing this fungus, it is still likely that it will clear up when conditions improve. If it is another type that kills some patches of grass, you may need to do some reseeding this fall. I find no evidence that lawn fungus is harmful to pets.

The Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county CCE office to extend information throughout their communities.

BREAST CANCER TREATMENT Different types of treatment are available for patients with breast cancer. Some treatments are standard (the currently used treatment), and some are being tested in clinical trials. A treatment clinical trial is a research study meant to help improve current treatments or obtain information on new treatments for patients with cancer. When clinical trials show that a new treatment is better than the standard treatment, the new treatment may become the standard treatment. Patients may want to think about taking part in a clinical trial. Some clinical trials are open only to patients who have not started treatment.

DID YOU KNOW? Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

Since 1984

(585) 671-6920

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

We are your hometown Sunsetter dealer, offering professional installation.

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Remove unnecessary items and furniture from rooms to free up more space to get around. Be sure there are no obstructions in walkways, entryways and near doors. Keep staircases clear at all times. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept. How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upon their leaves.... But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer. ~John Burroughs, “The Falling Leaves,” Under the Maples

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Who's Hoarding the Mini Blinds? It's a bit unnerving to walk through a store and see so many empty shelves. I haven't been to the local big box store very often lately, but I wanted to see if what I suspected was true. I'd been unable to order a number of items for curbside delivery and had been told that lots of things were actually in the store but couldn't be purchased except inside in person. That made no sense. I suspected that, instead, those items just weren't there. So, in I went, mask on face, miniature hand sanitizer bottle in purse. I was stunned to see so many empty shelves. It wasn't like the first month of the pandemic when people were hoarding and taking as much bread, sanitizers and canned goods as they could carry out, until limits were put on purchases. Instead, there were shelves empty of items you wouldn't normally associate with hoarding, like mini blinds. Who hoards mini blinds? I could (maybe) understand the lack of packs of lined school paper and pencils, for the kids doing remote learning, or toys because the kids are home all the time. I could see where we'd still be missing a variety of paper towels. And I could almost understand the few choices for shampoo and bath soap. But what about dishes and light bulbs? Unless one was in the market for square red dinner dishes or 40-watt bulbs, there were none to be had. Certain shortages we can understand. But what has happened to the supply line when we can't get a simple 100-watt bulb? With winter coming, we might do well to reconsider our supplies and add a few light bulbs to our stash. Otherwise we might be in the dark even more than we already are.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

OPTIONS FOR IMPLANT ANCHORS There are usually several options available when dealing with a “bad tooth” that needs extraction. “Endosteal implants” are the most common type of artificial root system to hold a replacement tooth in place. They are usually titanium screws that fit into the jaw and extrude through the gum. If there is not enough viable jawbone to hold an endosteal implant, “subperiosteal implants” may be an option. These implants are placed on or above the jawbone. Less common options include bone augmentation to restore the jawbone prior to implants; ridge expansion, which adds bone grafts to a bridge along the top of the jaw; and sinus augmentation, which adds bone below the sinus.

and they often bring a renewed sense of self-confidence by eliminating the day-to-day frustrations and discomfort of ill-fitting dentures. People with implants often say they feel better, look better, and live better. If you think implants may be for you, call us at 585.343.4246, for a consultation. A visit to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre, may be just what you need to enhance your quality of life. We’ll give you a reason to smile! P.S. The process of getting a tooth implant with an endosteal or other form of anchor usually takes several months and involves one or two oral surgeries.

Implants allow people to enjoy a healthy and varied diet without the restrictions some denture wearers face,

Chest CT Can’t Replace Screening Mammogram --DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am due to have a mammogram in July, but around the same time I am supposed to have a chest CT as a follow-up to my chondrosarcoma cancer. I have a CT every other year, and an X-ray on the opposite years of both my affected arm and my lungs. Does a chest CT have the potential of showing a similar finding as a mammogram? I would just as soon not have to expose myself to so much radiation all in one month. I’m 66. There is a history of postmenopausal breast cancer in my family, in my mother’s mother. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: A mammogram is an X-ray that is designed specifically to look for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms have been extensively studied and proven to reduce mortality in women between the ages of 50-74 (outside these ages, there remains extreme controversy). CT scans are X-rays taken from many angles and then reconstructed in a computer to provide a look at many slices of the part of the body being looked at. A CT scanner can be set to emphasize bones or soft tissue, and work is ongoing now with CT scans designed specifically for breast abnormalities. The CT scan you get as follow-up to your chondrosarcoma (a rare cancer of cartilage) is designed to look in lung tissue for abnormalities, and has not been evaluated as a means of screening for breast cancer, although I do know that some may be found anecdotally. The CT scans you get as a part of your cancer follow-up are not an adequate substitute for ongoing mammography, which is particularly important in your case due to a family history. I do understand the concern about radiation, but a mammogram has very little radiation -- approximately the same you would get from naturally occurring radiation sources in seven weeks of walking around. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a news report that vasectomy increases risk of prostate cancer. Should men avoid this procedure due to concern for prostate cancer? -- T.S.V. ANSWER: Several studies have looked at this possibility, and the results are conflicting. A 2014 study of about 50,000 U.S. men showed an increase of about 15% in the risk of fatal prostate cancer, but a 2016 study of 360,000 U.S. men showed no increase in risk. In June 2019, a study of over 2 million Danish men showed a 15% increase in overall prostate cancer risk. To put the risk in perspective, about 500 men would need to have a vasectomy for one additional man to get prostate cancer, in the Danish study. It is not clear that the vasectomy caused the prostate cancer. It is possible that there is something about men who choose vasectomy that puts them at higher risk to begin with; however, the authors were unable to find a known risk factor to support that possibility. Even if vasectomy does lead to an increased risk of prostate cancer, it still has similar or lower overall risk than other forms of birth control, and is a good choice for a man who is absolutely sure he does not want to father any more children, as a vasectomy should be considered permanent. Attempting reversal is possible, but there is no guarantee of success. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. * “Those hide-a-key rocks can be a little obvious -- at least they are to me. I have a spare key hidden outside too, but I sealed mine in a plastic baggie and buried it in a spot known only to our family members. Also, it’s not right by the door.” -– I.E. in Mississippi * Home office motivation: Preplan your outfits for daily success. When it’s all too easy to roll out of bed and log on without a thought, it might help your productivity to prepare for the workday as you would have in the time of commutes and conferences. The right wardrobe choices can help you set the tone for the day. * “When closing up our cabin for the season, we brought a box of mothballs and scattered them around the porch perimeter. This keeps the small animals like mice and skunks from setting up shop there while no one is around.” -S.F. in Pennsylvania * Now’s a great time to start weatherstripping! Check and recaulk windows. Caulk along baseboards to deter drafts. Add insulation to electrical outlets and under sinks around plumbing. Seal it up to stay toasty this winter.

It was, as I have said, a fine autumnal day; the sky was clear and serene, and nature wore that rich and golden livery which we always associate with the idea of abundance. The forests had put on their sober brown and yellow, while some trees of the tenderer kind had been nipped by the frosts into brilliant dyes of orange, purple, and scarlet.... As Ichabod jogged slowly on his way, his eye... ranged with delight over the treasures of jolly autumn. ~Washington Irving, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”
