I am Trip, a Setter Mix. I was adopted from Blue Moon Meadows in Avon. I must keep lookout to the street. I am well known in my kingdom neighborhood and love to be friends with everyone. My owner says my newest friend is my best friend. I live happily with my two sisters who were also adopted from BMM! I love the outdoors – even laying in the snow while the family is in the warm house.

Long-Distance Move With Cats in Pickup DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have three rescue cats. They’re the only family I’ve got. I’m planning to relocate to a rural area that is several days’ drive away. I’ll be driving a pickup truck. I feel that making my cats travel with me wouldn’t be humane. Is there an agency available that could humanely and safely transport my cats? -Karl in Avon, New York DEAR KARL: I can totally relate! Years ago, I moved across the country with a very nervous cat in a carrier next to me on the bench seat of my pickup truck. Even though I made sure he had water, food and anxiety meds prescribed by the veterinarian, it was a stressful trip for him, and he did not eat or even poop for the whole two-day trip. Once I reached our new home, he returned to his usual snuggly self. Traveling with all three cats is possible with planning and may be the least stressful option for them. If you have an extended-cab pickup, make room in the back seat for three cat carriers. Put a litter pan on the floor and cover with plastic wrap while traveling; at rest stops, open one carrier at a time and let one cat out to use the litter pan and to snuggle with you (don’t open the vehicle doors while you do this). Look for pet-friendly hotels that will let you keep the cats in the room. Airline cargo transport can quickly transport pets across long distances. But there is a risk of death for pets traveling in airline cargo. Another option is private pet transport. If you choose this service, make sure they are insured and bonded, and that they will stay in contact with you throughout the trip.

APPLE PICKING: Perhaps no activity is more synonymous w ith fall than apple picking. M any apple orchards encourage customers to come by and pick their ow n apples in the fall. How do I get rid of bishop’s weed? It invaded a bed of lily of the valley and I donít want to kill that as well. - Kathleen C. Bishop’s weed has an incredibly dense root system which is quite difficult to eradicate. You would need to remove the lily of the valley plants, then smother the entire bed for at least six growing months; a year would be more effective. The ground is frozen during December,
January, February, and March, so plants are dormant, not growing. Before replanting your lily of the valley, completely remove all current soil from the roots by soaking and using a forceful hose. Cover the area with landscape fabric or 6 layers of newspaper with overlapping edges, then top with several inches of mulch. Secure the edges with stones or branches. The newspapers will gradually disintegrate, but you would need to pull out the landscape fabric. If you don’t remove the fabric, it will
gradually break down in to smaller pieces, become mixed into the soil, and impede root growth. Watch the edges of this area during growing months, and spray any bishop’s weed plants that emerge with herbicide.

Estate planning is an important part of managing one’s finances. A qualified attorney who specializes in estate planning can help people write their wills and, if necessary, establish trusts that can help surviving loved ones in the wake of their death.
“Worry never solved a problem…” ~ Frederic Harrison There are probably very few of us who don’t let worry get the best of us from time to time. It’s perfectly natural that we tend to be concerned with the problems that affect us. But, it would be strange, indeed, if we didn’t make an effort to correct the situations that upset the equanimity of our lives. However, worry over matters beyond our control only serves to add more stress and unpleasantness to the normal quotas of worries we must deal with in everyday life. It may be helpful to realize that most of our worries never really materialize! Our staff is qualified to provide answers to your questions regarding Social Security or Veteran’s benefits. Phone for information or for an appointment, at our office or in your home if you prefer. No obligation.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor. HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
New to the Area, not the industry!
Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Apply a winterizing fertilizer. Winterizing fertilizers can help lawns store food they need to survive through winter and also can help them bounce back strong in spring. Such fertilizers are typically formulated for coolseason grasses such as fescue and bluegrass and are often best applied after the final cut of fall. Warm-season grasses go dormant in winter, so homeowners whose lawns contain these types of grasses won’t want to apply a winterizing fertilizer. Homeowners who don’t know which type of grass they have or are concerned about when to apply a winterizing fertilizer should consult with a lawncare professional before fertilizing.

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Homeowners may associate mulch with springtime lawn and garden care, but mulching in fall can benefit a lawn as well. According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against extreme temperatures, and not just those associated with summer heat waves. Mulch is often connected with its ability to help soil retain moisture during especially warm times of the year, when mulch promotes strong roots that can help lawns and plants survive periods of extreme heat. But when applied in the fall, mulch also inhibits freezing and thawing in winter, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured.

~Leo Tolstoy, to Nikolay Strakhov DID YOU KNOW? Raking leaves may be an autumnal traditional for many homeowners, but those who want a less strenuous way to prevent their lawns from being suffocated by fallen leaves may want to consider mulching them. Fallen leaves should never be left to linger on a yard for very long, and some homeowners may be surprised to learn that waiting to rake until all of the trees on a property have shed their leaves can be detrimental to the lawn. That’s because fallen leaves trap moisture and prevent sunlight and air from reaching the grass, making lawns more vulnerable to disease. Fallen leaves also can harbor insects, again putting lawns at risk of disease. Mulching may be the best option for homeowners who prefer to avoid spending several weekend afternoons each fall raking leaves. Many lawnmowers are now equipped with mulching capabilities, which can remove the need to rake. When leaves are mulched, they are minced into tiny pieces that are left behind on the lawn. Such pieces are so small that they won’t block air or light from reaching the grass, nor are they likely to harbor insects. But as these tiny pieces of leaves decompose, they enrich the soil with nutrients, so much so that some lawns may not even need to be fertilized in the fall. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Having breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram is a factor in breast cancer risk. The level of risk depends on how dense the breast tissue is. Women with very dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with low breast density. Increased breast density is often an inherited trait, but it may also occur in women who have not had children, have a first pregnancy late in life, take postmenopausal hormones, or drink alcohol.

A VERY SUCCESSFUL 2020 SUMMER GAZEBO CONCERT SERIES! The Riga Recreation Department just concluded its very successful 2020 Summer Gazebo Concert Series at the Village of Churchville Gazebo. In the tine of this health crisis, we were able to provide the community with some muchneeded relief. Many, many thanks to the following organizations that made all of this possible in these times of uncertainty: NYS Senator Michael Ranzenhofer’s Office, the Town of Riga, the Village of Churchville, the Churchville Lion’s Club and the following musical performers: Curbside Pickup, Blue Sky, Johnny Bauer, 8 Days a Week,
and Generations. -DaveThomas, Riga Recreation Supervisor ABOVE AND BEYOND! I want to give a huge thank you to all delivery people for making sure my parcels and mail arrive. A special thank you goes to our local FedEx. I order from Chewy frequently, and some of the items are excessively heavy. I have a pet that has allergies, and I am finding it difficult right now finding unscented products along with special animal food in our local stores. FedEx has no idea why I order what I do, but I wanted to let them know that they do an excellent job, and I am very pleased with their work ethic. THANK YOU I would like to
thank all of the wonderful friends that have helped us through the passing of our son JP. Thank you to all who came to the wake as JP would have loved this. Also, thank you to all who have stopped by to give condolences, brought food, flowers and cards, and donations to GG’s future education and for checking on us. Thank you to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department for their help. We can’t get by without you. Thank you to Pastor Colin Pritchard for staying with Jessica the night JP passed away and for the wonderful words at the wake. We are so thankful for you coming. We feel blessed to know that JP was loved by so many. We miss you JP. Love ya all, Margo,
MUSIC A HUGE PROBLEM? Wow! You use such strong adjectives to describe people who post their views, words such as “attacked” and “ganging up” on the person who has a complaint about neighbor and their music. I read the post as did many others, I’m sure, and there was no such thing. You may not like or agree with the suggestions given, but that does not add up to ganging up on or attacking someone. It was just practical advice. It’s clear to see how someone’s playing music can become so distorted. I think the complaining neighbor has more problems than just the neighbor’s music playing. They seem to have such distaste for them it’s a shame. How sad. With all the woes in the world, it’s a pity to make such a big thing over music. How long has this been going on that, all of a
sudden, it is a huge problem? MUSIC TROUBLE So sorry about neighbor being bothered by loud music. How long have you been suffering? Are you the only neighbor having a problem with loud music so loud that it rattles your house? Maybe you should try to nicely explain to your neighbor how bothersome the music is to you? Have you given that a thought? Maybe do it over a cup of coffee? That always brings the tension down, just a few suggestions. Also, ear plugs can help somewhat. There are codes where you can’t play music late at night or too early in the morning. Don’t know if that is when the music is being played. It’s always good to get along with neighbors. Hopefully, you can get some much-needed relief. Kindness does go a long way. I have been blessed with
neighbors who are kind and considerate. RESPECT OTHERS WITH MUSIC The nature of character is not based on self-entitlement but of respect for other’s right to peace and quiet. This must be a consideration, especially when residing in close communities or apartment complexes. We should not have to suffer through someone else’s loud music or faulty exhaust systems, etc. Also, taste in music is variable. One person’s treasure is another person’s torment. Peace and quiet is not trivial. It is of precious value. Remember the quiet individual doesn’t annoy the loud one; it’s vice versa. So, who should move? MUSIC & GETTING ALONG If you live in an apartment complex and a neighbor is blaring their music, then you

Bobby, Jessica, Anthony Emme and GG MY HEARTFELT THANKS I want to publicly thank the concerned motorist in the gray pickup truck who encountered me on North Main Street in the early morning hours on Monday, September 21st. He had purchased for me a reflective vest to wear as I exercise on the street’s shoulder. I was not aware that I was difficult to see since I wear a light-colored jacket and thought it was visible when headlights struck it. Thank you for your kindness and your personal concern for my safety. I was surprised and do feel safer wearing it!
should speak to management about it. It’s a different story if you live in a neighborhood with a lot of space in between homes and properties. Everyone has the right to enjoy their life, but unfortunately, we will not find a place where there is total peace and quiet. The bigger picture is getting along with one another, especially your neighbors. I know of someone who has a neighbor who does nothing but curse, I would take music, any day, over that.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Now More Than Ever, Get Your Flu Shot A sincere wish just came true: This year's high-dose senior version of the flu shot will contain all four vaccines. In past years, the senior shot (for those over age 65) contained only three of the vaccines, two A and one B. Most years I would write a snarly note to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and ask about the reason for the false economy. Of course I never got a reply, but now ... finally, we seniors will have a flu shot with all four vaccines. And what a shot it will be. The four vaccines are names we haven't heard in a while, if ever: A/Guangdong-Maonan (H1N1), A/ Hong Kong (H3N2), B/Washington and B/Phuket. To help us kick start our immune system, the senior version will contain four times the amount that younger folks get. The standard trivalent (threeway) will have two A and one B, while the standard quadrivalent (four-way) has all four. If your doctor says you should have a flu shot, don't delay. When I called my pharmacy (where I get my flu shots each year), the first appointment was many days out, and they had been swamped with requests for the shot. Yes, they will be resupplied when they run out, but no, they didn't know how quickly that would be. By getting a flu shot, should you get sick later this season, it will be a good bet that it's not the regular flu, which will save much time in getting a diagnosis. To find flu shots, call your doctor, local pharmacies, grocery stores or go to vaccinefinder.org. If you have a Medicare or insurance card, you won't have to pay anything. If you want to know more, check the CDC website: www.cdc.gov/ flu/season/faq-flu-season-2020-2021.htm.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Water marks, dead insects, cracks, and road grime can make it even harder to see out of the windshield when the sun is blazing. PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Old batteries should be replaced before winter begins. Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over. Most batteries last between three and five years. However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile. Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting battery performance. According to AAA’s Automotive Research Center, at 32 F, the average battery loses 35 percent of its strength. Newer batteries can be protected by starting the vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery. Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive.

Mask Makers: COVID’s Everyday Heroes: Part II BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
o wear masks or not to wear masks has become the question lately. No matter where you stand, there is no denying the care and selflessness shown by those at home who gave, and continue to give, their time, resources and talents to make masks for those in need. Five of these unsung heroes in Livingston and Ontario Counties open up about their mask-making journeys. Rachel Halbert – Caledonia Caledonia’s Rachel Halbert, a homeschooling mom of four, was inspired to make her first masks for her sister, an essential worker at Strong Hospital. It wasn’t long, however, before people began asking for Rachel’s masks. “I started receiving more and more requests, and I realized, wow, more people need these than I thought,” she shared. “I couldn’t make masks fast enough!”
Elizabeth knew that those working at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack, as well as others, would be in need of masks to comply with very strict regulations. So, she decided to make her masks with horse-themed patterns. “It makes it a little nicer to wear a mask,” she said. “They are washable and very affordable. I provide masks for those who need them, and the money they bring in makes certain these horses are still being fed and taken care of.”
Elizabeth Hendy displays her masks with the help of a five-month-old thoroughbred unofficially known as Captain, a future race horse!
Showing off Rachel Halbert’s masks!
Rachel started filling a tote with masks of all sizes for men, women, and children, made from the material she had on hand. Some of her friends helped, as well. Rachel offered them at no charge to anyone in need. “The community response has been overwhelming,” she said. “I put a donation jar out front with tote of masks, and I received a huge outpouring of financial support. Material of all kinds was donated along with plants, gift cards, even pizza and food so I wouldn’t have to worry about dinner.” Recently, Rachel began using a new design and has been focusing on children’s masks for the 2020 school year, estimating she has made well over 500 masks total at this point. “It has been so rewarding to hear how my masks blessed others and to see people in my community wearing them,” Rachel confided. “I am thankful I was able to help keep them a little safer.”
Rachel Halbert’s masks are a great fit!
Elizabeth Hendy makes horse-themed masks to support the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program!
Although she has faced difficulties such as a lack of supplies and her sewing machine breaking down, Elizabeth continues to sew masks. “It doesn’t help to make masks which are pretty but not comfortable,” she said. She has made over 200 more comfortable masks so far. To order Elizabeth’s masks, visit the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program Facebook page.

Heading north of Naples, Elizabeth Hendy of Canandaigua also found a way for masks to serve a dual purpose. “I started making masks because we needed a way to start raising money for the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program,” Elizabeth explained. “This agency does a lot of good work making sure horses find good homes at the end of their racing careers.”

SEEKING A PERFECT SMILE? Although pearly white, straight, even teeth may be the intended goal, they are not always attainable with the use of whiteners and fillers. Dental veneers are thin shells made of porcelain or resin-composite, which are permanently bonded to the front of existing teeth to improve their appearance. Veneers can also solve the issue of chipped or broken teeth as they can be attached to numerous or individual teeth as needed. Preparation for traditional veneers involves grinding down some of the tooth’s structure. No-prep veneers require minimal alterations to the patient’s natural teeth and are considerably less expensive; however, they only last about half as long (5-7 years vs. 10-15 years) as their traditional counterpart. NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES As the days become shorter and the weather cools down, a new crop of allergy symptoms can arise, turning the autumn season into one marked by sneezing, scratchy throats and itchy eyes. Medications can alleviate such symptoms, but allergy sufferers may want to investigate some natural ways to beat allergies. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, ragweed is one of the more common triggers of autumnal allergies. Ragweed contributes to “hay fever,” which is a term to describe allergic rhinitis that occurs as a symptom of ragweed pollen in the air. Ragweed releases pollen in mid-August, and it can continue to be problematic until a deep freeze arrives. Other sources of fall allergies include leaf mold and pollen that is present on fallen leaves. This gets circulated when people begin to rake or blow fallen leaves. Classroom pets and chalk dust in schools (although chalkboards are largely a thing of the past) are other autumn allergens. The good news is that many natural remedies work just as effectively as over-the-counter medications in regard to combatting ragweed and pollen problems.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Diabetes Not Limited to Only 2 Main Types --DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, at 57, I was diagnosed with Type 1 LADA diabetes. Initially I was put on insulin to get my blood sugar within the normal range. Then I was just on metformin until the “honeymoon period” was over. My endocrinologist is great. I now am back on insulin (six units at night). I walk anywhere between 3 and 8 miles about three times a day. My blood pressure is excellent. I initially lost about 18 pounds after diagnosis, so my weight is good. When looking at Google, it says my life expectancy has been cut by 20 years! Yikes, I JUST retired and if I go by their gauge, I’ll be passing around age 68! Is this based on someone who has had diabetes for many years, since Type 1 is usually diagnosed much earlier? The doctor said even though my initial sugars were over 500 when diagnosed, I was very healthy and that’s why nothing was “destroyed.” My vision was off for about a month but no permanent damage was done. Any reassurance would be appreciated! -- M.W. ANSWER: Most people are familiar with Type 1 diabetes, with a typical onset in childhood and at a normal weight. It is caused by an autoimmune destruction of the insulin-making cells in the pancreas. People also know about Type 2 diabetes, usually adultonset and usually diagnosed in someone who’s overweight; it’s caused by resistance to insulin. But there are other subtypes of diabetes, including latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). In the U.S. and Canada, it accounts for a small fraction of diabetes cases, but is more common in Scandinavian countries. It has some characteristics of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, but the autoimmune nature and the usual progression to insulin need makes most experts feel it is closer to Type 1 than to Type 2. A recent paper has outlined a potential new classification of diabetes types. The change in life expectancy from diabetes relates to how long you have had diabetes and how well-controlled it has been. With outstanding diabetes control (normal or near-normal blood sugar levels), the effect on overall mortality is modest, at best. In one model, the reduction in life expectancy is less than a year. However, it certainly is possible to have life expectancy drop by 20 years with very poorly controlled, longstanding diabetes. For people with diabetes, to a very large extent, their potential to live longer (and healthier) can be improved by better blood sugar control. For new-onset autoimmune diabetes (both Type 1 and LADA), early and aggressive blood sugar control with insulin may reduce the amount of autoimmune damage and improve long-term prognosis. Studies are in progress to evaluate this. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female, 16 years old. My white blood cell count is 16.6. I am suffering from so much weakness and pain in my legs, arms and shoulder area. I also have a cough and cold. Is it dangerous? What should I do for it? -- K.C. ANSWER: I don’t have enough information to help much. A white blood cell count that high suggests an infection. At your age, those symptoms are most likely a viral infection, but acute mononucleosis and even pneumonia are possible, so you need to see your doctor. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.
