DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Create a pile of leaves that will break down and form a crumbly, compost-like material called leaf mold. Even though leaf mold may sound like a blight, it’s actually a good amendment to garden soil, improving its structure and ability to hold water. Leaf mold also attracts beneficial organisms that are vital in healthy soil.

TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

A GUIDE TO BUYING PRE-OWNED VEHICLES

AUTO SECTION

Consider “certified” pre-owned vehicles. Many dealerships stand behind vehicles of a certain age and condition. Often called certified pre-owned vehicles, these tend to be lease turn-ins that are between three and four years of age and may still be under full or partial warranties. Certified pre-owned vehicles remove some of the worry associated with buying used since warranties will cover the repair costs of certain parts, such as the engine and drivetrain. Plus, the dealerships’ mechanics have given the vehicles health checks before listing them for sale, certifying their condition and mileage.

Oversight To the lady at the garage sale in LeRoy on Saturday, Oct. 7 - I have your overpayment. Please stop by and get it or you can contact the Penny Saver. Spooky and Fun! This year’s display of scarecrows on Main Street in Victor are very creative- well done!! What a difference! A Childcare Center in my town recently updated the exterior of its building and grounds. Its colors went from dark and dreary to bright and cheerful. It’s not only an improvement for the business, it’s a bright spot in our downtown that makes me smile every time I drive by! Small Town Happiness Fall in our small towns is one of my favorite times. Between the decorations, scarecrow contests, mums and pumpkins there is so much to make you enjoy the season!

HOW TO DISCUSS A CANCER DIAGNOSIS WITH YOUR EMPLOYER

Upcoming Motorcoach Tours!

Discuss how to share the news. Once your boss and HR department has been notified, seek their input regarding how to break the news to your colleagues. If you routinely work with people across multiple departments, it may be best to inform everyone through email, as it can be exhausting to break the news to each colleague individually. But it’s also alright if you prefer to keep the diagnosis under wraps. In the latter case, it might still be wise to inform those you work with closely each day, as that can help them prepare for increased responsibilities as your treatment progresses and potentially makes it hard for you to continue working full-time. When discussing how to share the news with an HR department, be specific about how much you want to share, as you may only feel comfortable discussing details of your diagnosis with certain coworkers, such as your boss.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 19, 1781, hopelessly trapped at Yorktown, Virginia, British Gen. Lord Cornwallis surrenders, effectively bringing an end to the American Revolution. He surrendered 7,087 officers and men, 900 seamen, 144 cannons, 15 galleys, a frigate and 30 transport ships. Pleading illness, he did not attend the surrender ceremony. * On Oct. 22, 1934, Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd is shot by FBI agents in Ohio. Floyd, who had been hunted for four years, used his last breath to deny his involvement in the infamous Kansas City Massacre, in which four officers were shot to death at a train station. * On Oct. 25, 1973, President Richard Nixon vetoes the War Powers Resolution, which would limit presidential power to commit armed forces abroad without Congressional approval. Congress passed the law over Nixon’s veto.

A 2017 study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention found that about one-third of women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in the United States live at least five years after diagnosis. Also known as stage IV breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer is the most advanced stage of the disease. Metastatic breast cancer refers to breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other parts of the body. Patients diagnosed with breast cancer also should know that improved treatments may further their chances of surviving a diagnosis, even a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. In fact, the American Cancer Society notes that survival rates are based on women who were diagnosed and treated at least five years earlier. In the time since those survival rates were documented, treatments could have advanced even further, potentially improving the five-year survival rates for metastatic breast cancer. Here’s a tip • If you have trouble opening the lid on glass jars, try using a pair of standard dishwashing gloves. They work to grip both the lid and the jar. They work especially well if your hands are the least bit moist. -- D.Y. in Pennsylvania • Save your old tissue boxes. They can be used to store plastic grocery store bags for easy use. WHEN CAN KIDS TRICK-OR-TREAT WITHOUT AN ADULT? Judge the neighborhood critically. Neighborhoods also can be a factor to consider. What may be a safe environment during the day may no longer be so safe when darkness descends and children are unchaperoned. If parents recognize the neighborhood tows the line between being safe and dangerous, they may want to push off trick-or-treating alone until their children are older. But even the neighborhoods parents would characterize as “safe” are not invulnerable to safety issues. It pays to check where registered child predators live nearby, and that information is available to the public in most areas.

Breast Cancer

FAQ The World Health Organization reports that roughly 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. By the end of that year, there were nearly eight million women alive who had been diagnosed with the disease in the previous half decade. A breast cancer diagnosis inevitably leads to questions about the disease. The bulk of those questions undoubtedly are asked by the millions of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. But millions more individuals, including friends and family members of recently diagnosed women, may have their own questions. Women can discuss the specifics of their diagnosis with their physicians. In the meantime, the following are some frequently asked questions and answers that can help anyone better understand this potentially deadly disease.

What is breast cancer? Cancer is a disease marked by the abnormal growth of cells that invade healthy cells in the body. Breast cancer is a form of the disease that begins in the cells of the breast. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) notes that the cancer can then invade surrounding tissues or spread to other areas of the body.

Can exercise help to reduce my breast cancer risk? The NBCF notes that exercise strengthens the immune system and women who commit to as little as three hours of physical activity per week can begin to reduce their risk for breast cancer. However, even routine exercise does not completely eliminate a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.

Is there a link between diet and breast cancer?

Is there a link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer? The NBCF reports that women who have been using birth control pills for more than five years are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. However, the organization notes that risk is very small because modern birth control pills contain low amounts of hormones.

Can breastfeeding reduce breast cancer risk? Breastfeeding and breast cancer are linked, though the NBCF notes that the role breastfeeding plays in lowering cancer risk depends on how long a woman breastfeeds. The World Cancer Research Fund International notes that evidence indicates that the greater number of months women continue breastfeeding, the greater the protection they have against breast cancer.

Is there a connection between stress & breast cancer? The NBCF notes that researchers have found that traumatic events and losses can alter how the immune system functions, which can provide an opportunity for cancer cells to establish themselves within a person’s body. The NBCF urges women to identify ways to keep their stress levels in check. Breast cancer education can be a valuable asset as women seek to reduce their risk for the disease.

The organization Susan G. Komen®, a nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer, reports that studies have shown eating fruits and vegetables may be linked to a lower risk for breast cancer, while consuming alcohol is linked to an increased risk for the disease. In addition, the NBCF reports that a high-fat diet increases breast cancer risk because fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor growth.

An estimated 154,794 Americans are currently living with metastatic breast cancer, which occurs when cancer in the breast spreads to other parts of the body, most often the lungs, liver, bones, and brain. One quarter of this number represents those whose metastatic disease was found at diagnosis, while three-quarters have experienced metastatic recurrence of early stage disease. Approximately 20% to 30% of people first diagnosed with early stage disease will later develop advanced or metastatic breast cancer. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 69-year-old who used to walk up 75 to 90 flights of steps several days a week as exercise. After a steering wheel airbag went off and damaged my heart, I am afraid my ability to do that stopped. After years of medication, I am now on a pacemaker, which definitely helps. Could the exercise have weakened my heart to such a degree that it could be viewed as overdoing it, therefore exacerbating my condition? -- Anon. ANSWER: In general, exercise does not harm the heart. On the contrary, exercise is almost always good for the heart. However, there are exceptions. In healthy people, there is an optimal amount of exercise, and extreme levels of exercise (on the order of running more than 10 miles a day every day) begin to decrease the benefit that a person gets from exercise. (This remains controversial, but I am convinced from the data.) In people with severe heart disease (the kind with blockages in the arteries), overdoing exercise can lead to a heart attack, but this is an exception. For every person who gets harmed by overexercising, there must be a hundred who don’t get adequate exercise. The fact that you have improved a lot on the pacemaker suggests that at least part of your problem wasn’t with the pump function of your heart, nor with the arteries leading to your heart. The problem lies with the electrical supply. Once a pacemaker is in, that problem is immediately alleviated, but the heart may still be deconditioned (“out of shape”). Regular exercise will help the problem. Your cardiologist can better answer the question for you and also give you advice on how to build up your exercise tolerance over time. ***

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN. Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Radiation therapy to the chest for the treatment of cancer increases the risk of breast cancer, starting 10 years after treatment. The risk of breast cancer depends on the dose of radiation and the age at which it is given. The risk is highest if radiation treatment was used during puberty, when breasts are forming. Radiation therapy to treat cancer in one breast does not appear to increase the risk of cancer in the other breast. For women who have inherited changes in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, exposure to radiation, such as that from chest x-rays, may further increase the risk of breast cancer, especially in women who were x-rayed before 20 years of age.

COMMON HALLOWEEN PHOBIAS Halloween is about embracing the scary and the spooky and enjoying all off the things that go “bump” in the night. Naturally, the holiday can drum up some fears and tap into peoples’ anxieties, especially when they come face-to-face with some of the symbols of Halloween. Some of these fears may be full-blown phobias. A phobia is defined as an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. Phobias can elicit feelings of dread and horror. In psychological terms, it is an anxiety disorder in which a person will go to great lengths to avoid a perceived danger. This danger is usually much greater in the person’s mind than in real life. Several symbols of Halloween can be tied to phobias. A person with achluophobia may not enjoy the darkness of the Halloween night. Someone with coimetrophobia probably would not want to visit a cemetery. Coming in contact with a ghost would not be ideal for someone with phasmophobia. Anyone with wiccaphobia might fear meeting up with a broom-riding witch. One of the more common phobias is arachnophobia, which is a fear of spiders. Spider decorations are common come Halloween, so people with arachnophobia may struggle on and around October 31. While Halloween will never fall on the thirteenth day of the month, the number 13 has been linked to Halloween festivities. Many people view the number 13 to be a harbinger of bad luck. This is especially so for those with triskaidekaphobia, or the fear of the number 13. Believe it or not, some people have a crippling fear of Halloween itself. This phobia is called samhainophobia. which is the fear of Halloween or the fear of the festival of the dead. The term “samhainophobia” originates from “Samhain,” meaning summer’s end. Samhain was also the name of the festival celebrated by the Celts to mark the transition from summer to winter.

DOUBLE LETTER ANIMALS

PAW’S CORNER Acid Reflux May be the Culprit in Cat’s Digestive Issues DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In regard to your recent article on a cat’s constant vomiting: I had the same issue with my cat. Stella was vomiting once or twice a day for several weeks. I couldn’t figure out why; there was no issue with new rugs or furniture. When they sprayed the lawns in our complex, I made sure not to track anything into the house. And Stella was an indoor cat, so she wasn’t being exposed to other cats. I got her in to see her vet, who ran tests and blood work and found nothing seriously wrong. The vet said that Stella might have GERD (acid reflux), and to give her one-quarter of a 10 mg famotidine pill each day. I cut each pill into fourths and give it to her in the morning with a little treat. It works perfectly; Stella no longer vomits repeatedly and has been doing well for the past two years. She gets a check-up every year at the vet and comes through with flying colors. Perhaps the owner could run this possibility by her vet and see what they think! -- Sande G., Webster, New York DEAR SANDE: That is certainly a possibility! Readers, be sure to check in with the veterinarian if your cat suffers from symptoms such as vomiting frequently or signs of distress after eating like excessive meowing or howling. Acid reflux is one possibility, but as Sande noted, it’s important to rule out more serious conditions. Be sure to ask plenty of questions at the vet’s office. Over-the-counter medications are a possibility, but keep in mind that formulations for humans contain larger dosages than a cat needs and may contain ingredients that are not great for your pets. The vet can advise you best. Does your cat take over-the-counter instead of prescription medications? Tell us about it at ask@pawscorner.com.

Bob Herson: Master of Flies and Streams A Lifelong Journey in Fishing BY SUZIE WELLS

F

or Bob Herson, fishing is more than just a hobby; it’s a way of life. He says he tries to fish just about every day of the year, and loves having Caledonia’s Spring Creek in his literal backyard. He passes on his knowledge and expertise to both novice anglers and seasoned fishermen. Growing up as the only boy in a household with six sisters, Bob recognized the need for his own space and escape. He found that escape in fishing. His Long Island family was not interested in fishing, and his dad wasn’t really an outdoorsman. Bob’s Kindergarten teacher, however, piqued the boy’s interest when he read stories about fishing. Bob says he vividly remembers that day sitting on the rug around the teacher’s chair as he read the stories. A sister took Bob fishing and his interest grew. By 12, his passion ignited, he had his first official lessons in the Catskills. With his first fly tying kit, Bob started tying flies for other people by the age of 14. He notes that he selected his college, the University of Oregon, based on its proximity to nearby streams. He jokes that he tied flies for beer money in college and has since found quite the side job in fly tying for individuals and wholesale business. Now, Bob ties flies 3-4 hours/day even with a full-time job as a family therapist working with high-risk families. He finds it and fishing to be quite therapeutic after his workdays. He says “I have a crazy job where I see some really bad things, sad things, so fishing is the best way to clear my head. Being out in nature is great.” Bob runs a retail business, selling a few flies at a time to individual customers, and a wholesale business, making and selling hundreds and thousands of flies for customers, including for Dette Flies shop in the Catskills, where Bob says he learned a lot from Mary Dette. He says, “there was maybe half a day three years ago I had no flies to tie.”

Trout from Spring Creek, Caledonia

Bob also collects bamboo fly rods and fishing books, amassing probably a thousand books on the subject, he says. Bob’s fly patterns are featured heavily in Mike Valla’s 2023 book, Fly Fishing Guide to New York State. Amidst his entrepreneurial endeavors and his dedication to the craft, Bob remains grounded in the camaraderie that fishing has afforded him. He cherishes the friendships forged through his artful fly creations, relishing the occasional solitary expedition or the company of a close confidante. Oatka Creek and Spring Brook hold a special place in his heart, though the latter languishes in disrepair, a fact that troubles Bob deeply. Once a thriving hub of angling activity, Spring Brook’s decline can be traced back to an avian incursion that decimated its fish population, resulting in a marked decline in angler visits. Bob advocates for the concerted efforts of the Caledonia and Mumford communities, urging them to focus on stream restoration, with dam removal as a pivotal step forward. Bob advises budding anglers to start with spin fishing to grasp essential techniques before delving into the complexities of fly fishing. Bob acknowledges the perceived elitism sometimes in the fly-fishing community and encourages a more accessible entry point. Bob finds solace and clarity in the solitude of fishing. In a profession that often exposes him to the depths of human struggles, the act of casting a line becomes a form of therapy. Nature, for Bob, is a healing force. Bob says one of the most underrated places to fish is Genesee Country Village & Museum, where he says fishing is great in the springtime. “It’s gorgeous and worth it,” he says. Bob is thankful for that pivotal day in Kindergarten when the teacher spun the fishing stories that ignited Bob’s passion. “If I didn’t experience that, I’d probably not be fishing,” he says.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

THE ORIGIN S OF OKTOBERFEST Although Oktoberfest originated in M unich, Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations now take place all over the globe. They are a chance to enjoy the early autumn w eather w ith music, food, entertainment and, of course, German beer. Oktoberfest is a 16-day folk festival that begins at the end of September and runs through the first w eek of October. Roughly six million people travel to Germany each year to participate in the official Oktoberfest, w hile many others attend festivities closer to home. W hile many people are familiar w ith the foods, beverages and pageantry of Oktoberfest, they may not be so sure of Oktoberfest’s origins. According to History.com, the first Oktoberfest took place on October 12, 1810, w hen Bavarian Crow n Prince Louis, later to be know n as King Louis I of Bavaria, married Princess Therese von SachsenHildburghausen. The citizens of M unich w ere invited, and the festivities w ere held on the fields in front of the city gates. Horse races took place and eventually concluded the festivities, both at the c ity gates and elsew here across Bavaria. The festival and horse races w ere held once again the follow ing year, giving rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest. To increase the potential for fun and take advantage of longer days, the event w as expanded from one day to a few w eeks, stretching through September and into October.

The tradition-rich horse race no longer takes place and hasn’t for more than 50 years. But the festive atmosphere still prevails. Huge tents are erected to accommodate the large crow ds. Since 1950, the traditional festival opening has been a tw elve-gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 by the M ayor of M unich w ith the cry “ O’zapft is! ” (“ It’s tapped! ” ). M illions of people participate in Oktoberfest celebrations. An abundance of food and millions of liters of beer are available to enhance the fun. Page 33
