HOW TO SUPPORT LOVED ONES WHO HAVE BREAST CANCER
Offer emotional support. Someone with breast cancer may just need a person who can be there and listen. A hug, a nod of understanding or even a companion who can chat and take the person’s mind off the cancer can be immensely helpful. Keep in mind that emotions may change on a dime, and some emotions may be directed at support systems. While it can feel hurtful, remember the real reason for any outburst is the disease. Patience is needed at all times.
Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

on or holding the eye dropper directly over her eye will freak her out. Instead, keep her comfortable and unaware of the dropper until the very last moment. Here’s how:
-- Approach her from the side, and pet her into a sitting position, giving lots of praise. If she is a large dog, have a friend cradle her from the side or stand behind her, placing your legs behind her shoulders so she can’t back up. If she is small, cradle her until she is calm.
• Cup one hand below Maisie’s chin so you can gently li her head upward.
• Quickly wipe the eyes clean using a damp cotton ball or cloth.
• Unscrew the eyedropper top or have a friend do it where Maisie can’t see.
• Li her head and gently tug down her lower eyelid.
• Bring the eye dropper up and hold it at an angle to the eye so it’s close but not directly in her view.
• Gently tug her upper eyelid upward and quickly put a drop into the eye, being careful not to touch the eye.
• Repeat with the other eye.
• Wipe away excess medicine with a clean cotton ball.
• Give Maisie a treat right away She deserves it!

SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS
When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs.
Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

How physical activity can help in the fight against breast cancer
Breast cancer is a complex disease that a ects millions of women across the globe each year.
ough the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that only about 4 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States are under age 40, women of all ages can take steps to protect themselves against this deadly disease. Exercise bene ts women in a myriad of ways, and that includes lowering their risk for breast cancer.
e ACS notes that researchers are increasingly linking exercise to a reduced risk for breast cancer. ough the reasons behind that link remain unclear, some theorize that the positive e ects of exercise on body weight, in ammation, hormones, and energy balance could be why regular physical activity helps women reduce their risk of breast cancer.
Body weight and breast cancer
e National Cancer Institute reports that being obese a er menopause can signi cantly increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. In addition, the ACS attributes the rise in hormone receptor-positive breast cancers to an increased prevalence of excessive body weight. Routine exercise is a highly e ective way to lose weight and keep weight o , which in turn could lower women’s risk for breast cancer.
Being sedentary and breast cancer
Exercise is a not a sedentary activity, and that could be another reason why women who are physically active have a lower risk for breast cancer. e ACS notes that more than one study has linked sitting time to a higher risk of various diseases, including breast cancer. Researchers with the ACS analyzed data from 77,462 women, who they followed for an average of 15.8 years. None of the participants had cancer when the study started, but researchers found that women who sat for six or more hours per day during their free time had a 10 percent greater risk for invasive breast cancer than women who sat for less than three hours per day during free time.
Does physical activity really reduce breast cancer risk?
e human body is complex, and a host of factors, including those like age that women have no control over, can a ect cancer risk. However, engaging in routine physical activity seems to be an e ective way for women to reduce their risk for breast cancer. In fact, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation estimates that one-third of all breast cancer cases could be prevented with positive lifestyle choices that help women maintain a healthy weight, including exercise.
Routine physical activity can be a signi cant weapon in women’s arsenal as they continue their e orts to prevent and overcome breast cancer.

Batavia Pet Rescue Matters & Saves Lives
BY LORI BRUTON
Rescuing pets is important. Knowledge is power, and most people don’t know what’s happening with pets and that so many need a safe, loving home. Pets cannot speak for themselves. It’s our responsibility to look out for these little creatures that we love. ey give us unconditional love and companionship.
Pepe’s Kids Pet Rescue in Batavia is a nonpro t Humane Society organization established by Jaime Medina. Medina is originally from Queens, New York. She moved to Arizona before settling in Western New York.
Medina found that Western New York had more to o er for her and has a culture that truly loves and values its pet companions. She primarily rescues and rehabilitates dogs; however, she has a connection with cat rescues, as well. It was a rare occasion when she rescued an Eastern painted turtle that she named Pat. Pat is doing well and still resides with her.
It all began nearly 20 years ago.
Medina rescued Pepe, a Toy Manchester Terrier, from a shelter in 2003. He became the inspiration for Pepe’s Kids Pet Rescue. Pepe acted as the papa dog, mentoring every dog that was taken in and teaching them how to behave.
Some dogs get adopted if it is in their best interest and if they can be matched with the right owner. Senior pets stay at the pet rescue sanctuary with Medina, especially if adoption would not be best, which depends on such things as the dog’s background, temperament, age, and how well the dog would or would not adjust. Not only does Medina rescue pets and place them in new homes, but she also trains dogs while educating and helping people learn about basic pet care and e ective methods of correcting unwanted behaviors.
Medina’s goal is to nd responsible, kind people who are looking for animals and deter those same people from buying pets from backyard breeders. ere are several homeless pets in Phoenix, especially chihuahuas. In fact, there is an overpopulation of pets in that area.
It’s like a matchmaker service for pets. Medina matches the right pet with therightownersobothhumanandpetwillthrive. ishappensbyplacing animals from di erent areas in good homes. Whether the pet is homeless or in a shelter, it can be matched by size and breed to the pet seeker who wants to adopt according to their home situation.
In order for this to happen, Medina requires funds and help from Phoenix to have the dog released, assure proper vetting, and obtain a health certi cate to bring the pet to New York. Unfortunately, the pandemic put a damper on her progress in this area. She couldn’t get grants, funding, or donations.
“If each person could help one animal, it would make a big di erence,” said Medina.
Maybe a neighbor is struggling to buy dog food. Ask how you can help. Donate to a local rescue, shelter, or private pet owner. Drop o food to dog
shelters or drop o supplies like dog pads, paper towels, and cleaning supplies. Dog food prices are high. Keeping enough on hand is a challenge, especially for large dogs.
Large dogs is where Goardy comes in. Medina called him her “boyfriend dog.” He was a pitbull great dane mix that she rescued when she lived in Arizona. Goardy rode with her everywhere. He would hold her hand in the car while she was driving. is large dog was an ambassador for her rescue organization until he passed away.
Contrary to popular belief, Medina states that pitbulls are a wonderful breed of dog as long as they are well-trained and handled properly. You may remember the TV show, e Little Rascals. e dog on that show was an American Pitbull Terrier named Petey. Goardy trained other dogs and people, showing them that pitbulls can be good dogs. He let people pet him and love on him. He was a learning tool for the community. Goardy helped save the lives of many pitbulls. According to Medina, the key to rescuing an animal is providing security, trust, and love. Being a pet owner is a responsibility that you need to be ready for. One shouldn’t get a pet just because it’s cute. Animals are living creatures that have needs and feelings such as food, security, direction, and socialization.
If you need help with your animals, reach out to someone who can guide you. Basic care is important. Education and training are available. It’s also important to get your pets spayed and neutered.
e bond and attachment humans have with pets is special. Medina said it’s hard to see the pets go when they get their forever home, but she o en stays in touch with the new owners.
Anyone seeking to rescue a pet and give it a good home can rest assured the right match is waiting for them. Rescuing can save lives, including yours. If you need a faithful friend, reach out and connect with Pepe’s Kids Pet Rescue. All the animals are Pepe’s kids. His legacy lives on.

Thank you!
Recently, my husband and I went out to Texas Roadhouse restaurant to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. I needed some help with him for his walker and oxygen tank cart. A lady and her family were also walking in and asked to help me. When we got inside, the wait staff helped also helped us to our seats. It was a very nice time for us. The lady and her family ended up sitting across from us, and we had friendly conversations. When she got ready to leave, she told us, "Happy anniversary. I paid for your meals." I was in disbelief and shock. I said to her, "Are you kidding?" She said no and that she paid for our meals. I still could not get over it. At the end of our meal, the servers also helped us out to our car. Wow! It was nice to see the good people still out there. Thank you! - Bonnie L.
Congratulations!
Thank you, Ray Weidman and Brian Lampher, for stopping by the Little Lakes Community Center table at The Festival at the Falls in Honeoye Falls. They won our raffle for a free John Dady concert ticket. Congratulations, and we will see you at the Concert on Dec. 10th!
Thank you, Stranger!
On July 21st, we were at the Walmart in Brockport, and as we left our car, we dropped some paperwork. A very nice person found those papers and took the time to actually look at them and found our insurance company which was local. They went out of their way to return them to the agency. We got a call while we were still in Walmart that they had our papers. I can't express how grateful we are to that person. It really made us realize there are still great people in the world. Thank You again!

Town claims no responsibility!
In January of 2022, our town’s snowplow got off course and knocked down three mailboxes in a row. Mine and that of my neighbor to the north and that of my neighbor to the south respectively. My post was taken off at ground level as was one of my neighbor’s. Their mailboxes were replaced by the town in a timely manner. Mine was overlooked for some reason that no one has explained. After numerous phone calls to the town and to the highway superintendent, the post for my mailbox was finally replaced. It only took eight months! The superintendent claimed my post was rotted (It is not), and denied responsibility for replacement, claiming it broke because it was rotted. If that is the case, why were the mailboxes to my immediate north and south also damaged? Here’s why he, and any town that claims no responsibility, is wrong. If it were a person that was crushed instead of a mailbox, would the town be liable? You’d better believe it. Town employees can’t destroy private property and not be held responsible.
Stay back from tow trucks!
On Friday morning while traveling north on the freeway, I was behind a tow truck with a small SUV on its flatbed. Suddenly, the front fender came flying off the SUV and hit my car. I did my best to avoid it, but with heavy traffic and a 30-mph wind, that fender hit my Cadillac in the front left wheel, causing damages. It happened at a split and the driver went south as I continued north to my destination. When I reached out to the tow company, he said that he would check the rear facing camera and call me back. I could not veer away as I would have caused a major accident, but obviously, this company doesn’t care. Now my insurance will go up if I call in a claim even though I did nothing wrong. Imagine if that fender had hit my windshield at 60 mph with a 30-mph wind. As a car hauler wife, I know that towing companies must check their towed vehicles for loose parts, just as car haulers do, so that this type of situation never occurs.

Cardiac Stent, While Helpful, Can Bring Risks
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 71-year-old woman diagnosed with coronary artery disease. My latest calcium score was 801. My right coronary artery was 80% blocked, and the left artery was 25%. My cardiologist asked me to decide if I want to do angioplasty or not. I don’t have any symptoms, only shortness of breath on exertion. I can’t decide what to do. My cardiologist seemed against getting a stent, not that he said that exactly, but he stressed the risk of getting one. -- M.C. ANSWER: A cardiac stent is a device placed into an artery of the heart after it is re-opened, usually by a balloon in a procedure called an angioplasty. Stents help reduce the risk of the artery closing off after the procedure. In people with stable coronary artery disease, opening up a blood vessel can reduce symptoms, but has not been shown, despite many studies, to reduce risk of heart attack or death.
You said you were asymptomatic, but shortness of breath is one of the major symptoms of blocked coronary arteries, which are the blood vessels that provide oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. It can be very difficult at times to judge whether a person’s shortness of breath is coming from blockages in the artery or not, and stress testing can help answer whether this is likely. People can have shortness of breath on exertion for many reasons, including lung problems, anemia, lack of exercise or persistent symptoms after a COVID infection.
While the decision is ultimately up to you -- it’s your body -- it’s best if the cardiologist gives you a definite recommendation and the reasoning behind it. You can’t make an informed decision without being informed. A stent might improve your shortness of breath, but there are risks of bleeding, infection and even heart damage from a stent placement. It’s not to be undertaken lightly. If your cardiologist doesn’t feel that your shortness of breath stems from the blockages, then a stent is not likely to be helpful. Revisit with your cardiologist to get a clear idea of the potential benefit and harm specific for your case, and bring a friend or family member to assist you.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN.
Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small.
Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain?
HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS
is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the rst few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking.
• Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the brous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.
• Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency.
• 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention.
• We also o er surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

We Care About Your Smiles
by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
ADDRESSING MALOCCLUSION
Malocclusion simply means “bad bite.” It occurs when the lower and upper teeth don’t align when the mouth is closed. A very common and treatable dental condition, malocclusion is more common in mouths with crowded or crooked teeth or if the upper and lower jaws are out of alignment. Malocclusion can lead to dental and other issues if left untreated. Those with malocclusions are at higher risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and losing adult teeth. Malocclusions can also affect the way a person talks or chews. It can even have an impact on mental health and self-esteem since the most common symptom of malocclusion is the way a person with a noticeable overbite or underbite looks.
If crooked, unevenly spaced, damaged, neglected, or otherwise
unattractive teeth are preventing you from smiling, take care of the problem with the help of your dentist. Here at BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we care about how you feel, and we’ll work with you to help you achieve optimal oral health and maximum smile power, from malocclusion modifications, to cosmetic enhancements, to complete restorations, to regular dental checkups. For gentle dental care for everyone in your family, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Malocclusion can sometimes cause pain when biting or chewing.

BREAST CANCER TREATMENT
Most patients with breast cancer have surgery to remove the cancer. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the removal of the sentinel lymph node during surgery. The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to receive lymphatic drainage from a tumor. It is the first lymph node where the cancer is likely to spread. A radioactive substance and/or blue dye is injected near the tumor. The substance or dye flows through the lymph ducts to the lymph nodes. The first lymph node to receive the substance or dye is removed. A pathologist views the tissue under a microscope to look for cancer cells. After the sentinel lymph node biopsy, the surgeon removes the tumor using breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy. If cancer cells were not found in the sentinel lymph node, it may not be necessary to remove more lymph nodes. If cancer cells were found, more lymph nodes will be removed through a separate incision. This is called a lymph node dissection.
Types of surgery include the following:
• Breast-conserving surgery is an operation to remove the cancer and some normal tissue around it, but not the breast itself. Part of the chest wall lining may also be removed if the cancer is near it. This type of surgery may also be called lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, segmental mastectomy, quadrantectomy, or breast-sparing surgery.
• Total mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer. This procedure is also called a simple mastectomy. Some of the lymph nodes under the arm may be removed and checked for cancer. This may be done at the same time as the breast surgery or after. This is done through a separate incision.
• Modifiedradicalmastectomy:Surgerytoremovethewholebreastthat has cancer, many of the lymph nodes under the arm, the lining over the chest muscles, and sometimes, part of the chest wall muscles. Chemotherapy may be given before surgery to remove the tumor. When given before surgery, chemotherapy will shrink the tumor and reduce the amount of tissue that needs to be removed during surgery. Treatment given before surgery is called preoperative therapy or neoadjuvant therapy.
Even if the doctor removes all the cancer that can be seen at the time of the surgery, some patients may be given radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy after surgery, to kill any cancer cells that are left. Treatment given after the surgery, to lower the risk that the cancer will come back, is called postoperative therapy or adjuvant therapy.
If a patient is going to have a mastectomy, breast reconstruction (surgery to rebuild a breast’s shape after a mastectomy) may be considered. Breast reconstruction may be done at the time of the mastectomy or at some time after. The reconstructed breast may be made with the patient’s own (nonbreast) tissue or by using implants filled with saline or silicone gel.

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER
Estrogen is a hormone made by the body. It helps the body develop and maintain female sex characteristics. Being exposed to estrogen over a long time may increase the risk of breast cancer. Estrogen levels are highest during the years a woman is menstruating.
A woman’s exposure to estrogen is increased in the following ways:
• Early menstruation: Beginning to have menstrual periods at age 11 or younger increases the number of years the breast tissue is exposed to estrogen.
• Startingmenopauseatalaterage:Themoreyearsawomanmenstruates, the longer her breast tissue is exposed to estrogen.
• Older age at first birth or never having given birth: Because estrogen levels are lower during pregnancy, breast tissue is exposed to more estrogen in women who become pregnant for the first time after age 35 or who never become pregnant.

HOW TO DISCUSS A CANCER DIAGNOSIS WITH YOUR EMPLOYER
Discuss how to share the news. Once your boss and HR department has been notified, seek their input regarding how to break the news to your colleagues. If you routinely work with people across multiple departments, it may be best to inform everyone through email, as it can be exhausting to break the news to each colleague individually. But it’s also alright if you prefer to keep the diagnosis under wraps. In the latter case, it might still be wise to inform those you work with closely each day, as that can help them prepare for increased responsibilities as your treatment progresses and potentially makes it hard for you to continue working full-time. When discussing how to share the news with an HR department, be specific about how much you want to share,as you may only feel comfortable discussing details of your diagnosis with certain coworkers, such as your boss.

PREPARE NOW FOR ELECTION DAY
Elections decide the leadership that guides legislation and enforcement of regulations. The right to vote is something many people take for granted, but elsewhere in the world many people have no say with regard to their political leaders, which only emphasizes the importance of participating in the election process whenever you’re afforded theopportunitytodoso.
ThefirststeptoprepareforElection Day is to confirm your eligibility. Age,legalresidencyandcitizenship status are just a few of the factors that may affect your eligibility to vote. County clerks, municipal offices as well as the Division of Motor Vehicles should have voter registration forms, and additional informationisavailableonline.
Voterregistrationmayhavetobefiled severalweekstoamonthinadvance of ElectionDayinorder for youtobe eligible. In the United States, when voter eligibility is in question at the timeofanelection, apersontypically may cast a provisional vote, which will then be considered after other ballotsarecounted.
Onceyoureligibilityhasbeenverified, it is important to know the dates of key elections. Local newspapers often print schedules and this information can be found online as well. Various local and federal elections occur each year, and November iswhennationalelections takeplaceintheUnitedStates.
Before voting, voters should research the respective candidates for each election. To better understand candidates’ platforms, visit their websites as well as those of nonpartisan political organizations, such as The League of Women Voters. Deciding who to vote for requires more than just siding with a particular political party. Read as much as you can on the candidates’ beliefs, concerns and voter history. This will help you makethebestdecisionpossible.
In the days leading up to Election Day, confirm your polling location and voting options. USA.gov advises that if you need special assistance, contact your local elections office for information, advice, and educational materials aboutvotingequipmentanddetails on access to the polling place, includingdesignatedparking. Keep in mind that, in addition to voting for candidates, you may asked to answer additional questions about issues impacting your local community. These are called ballot measures. A voter guidealsomayincludeinformation about certain issues that will requireyourvote.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Storing Food When ere’s No Space
During the past two years when I stocked up on grocery staples, I ended up with canned foods and dry goods stored in three di erent places around the house.
I’d have to check all three places to be sure I grabbed the green beans with the nearest expiration date. Pasta was the same. Worse was when I discovered that I wasn’t having spaghetti for dinner a er all because I’d used the last of the pasta and only thought I had one more tucked away somewhere.
Enter the internet and the wide selection of kitchen storage products available.
I wish I’d known of this two years ago: a metal stacking unit that holds 36 cans. I put it on the bu et in the dining room, all cans in easy reach around the corner from the kitchen.
Not having a pantry, I’ve pulled the hall coat closet into service, moving the hangar bar close to the ceiling and opening up the whole bottom half of the space for four rows of wire shelving and baskets for dry goods and envelopes.
And when all seems lost, when you have no pantry and no basement, when your coat closet can’t be recon gured, there are still handy places you can store food. A small bookcase will hold cans. Slide a few baskets under an end table. Cereal keepers are smaller than boxes. A row of clear canisters for envelopes will let you see what you have at a glance. e immediate bene t of having alternate storage places is that it opens up space in your cupboards for currently used items. e box of instant rice and the jar of peanut butter will all be right in front of you.
Remember to get a black marker to write expiration dates in big letters! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE ORIGINS OF OKTOBERFEST
Although Oktoberfest originated in Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations now take place all over the globe. They are a chance to enjoy the early autumn weather with music, food, entertainment and, ofcourse,Germanbeer.
Oktoberfestisa16-dayfolkfestival that begins at the end of September and runs through the first week of October. Roughly six million people travel to Germany each year to participate in the official Oktoberfest, while many others attend festivities closer to home. While many people are familiar with the foods, beverages and pageantry of Oktoberfest, they may not be so sure of Oktoberfest’sorigins.
According to History.com, the first Oktoberfest took place on October 12, 1810, when Bavarian Crown Prince Louis, later to be known as King Louis I of Bavaria, married Princess Therese von SachsenHildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited, and the festivities were held on the fields in front of the city gates. Horse races took place and eventually concluded the festivities, both at the city gates and elsewhere across Bavaria. The festival and horse races were held once again the following year, giving rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest. To increase the potential for fun and take advantage of longer days, the event was expanded from one day to a few weeks, stretching through SeptemberandintoOctober.
The tradition-rich horse race no longer takes place and hasn’t for more than 50years.But the festive atmosphere still prevails. Huge tents are erected to accommodate the large crowds. Since 1950, the traditional festival opening has been a twelve-gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 by the Mayor of Munich with the cry “O’zapftis!” (“It’stapped!”).
Millions of people participate in Oktoberfest celebrations. An abundance of food and millions of liters of beer are available to enhancethefun.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* A Tip From JoAnn: I like bottled water, but it’s expensive and creates a lot of waste. I have plenty of reusable bottles, but bottled water always seemed more convenient and, frankly, better. I found that what I really like is to take a bottle of very cold water out of the fridge and drink it, so instead of storing those reusable bottles in the cabinet, I fill them straight from the dishwasher and put them in the fridge. Now I have the convenience of bottled water without spending the money, and I happily am not creating waste.
* To remove stubborn contact paper from kitchen shelves, use a hair dryer set on low to loosen the adhesive. Peel away slowly.
* Here’s a trick for removing hardwater stains on windows or glass doors: Apply full-strength fabric softener to surface. Let dry, then use a wet cloth to remove, rinsing the cloth frequently.
* “Hang a bag of clothespins near the laundry basket. Then if something has a stain that needs to be addressed, put a clip on it before adding it to the basket. This way, you’ll know what to pretreat on wash day.” -- D.W. in Washington
* “To keep pants on a hanger from creasing, I slit a paper towel cardboard roll and slip it over the hanger. I tape it together and then put the pants over it. This has worked for me for many years.” -I.R. in Nebraska
* Got a grease stain on your shirt? Cover it with baking soda right away. The baking soda will absorb oil. Repeat several times and launder as quickly as you can.

The human soul is slow to discover the real excellence of things given to us by a bountiful
and not until the shadows of death begin to gather around the object that we love, do we see its worth and beauty. Autumn is the dim shadow that clusters about the sweet, precious things that God has created in the realm of nature. While it robs them of life, it tears away the veil and reveals the golden gem of beauty and sweetness. Beauty lurks in all the dim old aisles of nature, and we discover it at last.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle.
the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts.
of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

to greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, reap the benefits of peace and quiet as well as exercise from manual raking.
While raking, do not feel the need to remove every leaf. A certain amount of organic matter can be beneficial to the soil and even insulate the lawn somewhat. A leftover leaf here or there also may provide protection for insects and small animals. For example, many native bees spend the winter in tunnels in the ground, cracks in mortar, holes in dead wood, or within hollow stems, and they need lawn and garden litter to survive.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME
Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary.
Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home.
Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals.

PREVENT CO POISONING
(NAPSI)—Each year, more than 400 people die from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and more than 20,000 visit the emergency room. CO poisoning can be prevented with a few precautions:
What To Do
• Never use portable electric generators, charcoal grills or other similar devices inside your home, garage or in any confined area that can let carbon monoxide collect.
• Have your chimney, fireplace and woodstoves inspected before every heating season.
• Turn off space heaters before leaving a room or going to sleep.
• Never run your car engine for more than a few moments in a garage, even if the door to the outside is open. Fumes can build up quickly and can spread to the living area of your home.
• Look for clues that home appliances may be malfunctioning. Common indicators include decreased hot water supply, soot on appliances, moisture inside windows, and furnaces not heating properly.
• Install at least one carbon monoxide detector, connected to a monitoring center that operates 24/7, on every level of your home. Real protection comesfromADT—keepingyour family safe from poisonous CO gas that can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and possibly death if undetected.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
or her
Part-Time Bus Driver
Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT
The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant.IntheUnitedStates, ithas been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE
Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike.
The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn.
Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.
We’re Hiring!

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER
The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises.
According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player.
That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

DID YOU KNOW?
Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
* Although lesser known today, the temperance novel “Franklin Evans; or, The Inebriate: A Tale of the Times” was one of Walt Whitman’s most commercially successful works. The great American poet wrote this novel at the start of his career, strictly for cash. Interestingly, considering the book’s subject matter, he later admitted that he wrote it in a three-day drunken stupor.

RAKING LEAVES: While raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great way to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in, and then do it again. When raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves and set them aside. Once the raking is done, you can then enjoy making some homemade crafts with the leaves you and your youngsters just collected.

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER
Aromataseinhibitors(anastrozole, letrozole)andinactivators(exemestane) lower the risk of recurrence and of new breast cancers in women who have a history of breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors also decrease the risk of breast cancer in women with the following conditions:
• Postmenopausal women with a personal history of breast cancer.
• Women with no personal history of breast cancer who are 60 years and older, have a history of ductal carcinoma in situ with mastectomy, or have a high risk of breast cancer based on the Gail model tool (a tool used to estimate the risk of breast cancer).
In women with an increased risk of breast cancer, taking aromatase inhibitors decreases the amount of estrogen made by the body. Before menopause, estrogen is made by the ovaries and other tissues in a woman’s body, including the brain, fat tissue, and skin. After menopause, the ovaries stop making estrogen, but the other tissues do not. Aromatase inhibitors block the action of an enzyme called aromatase, which is used tomakeallofthebody’sestrogen.Aromataseinactivatorsstoptheenzyme from working.
Possible harms from taking aromatase inhibitors include muscle and joint pain, osteoporosis, hot flashes, and feeling very tired.
