People travel far and w ide come Thanksgiving w eekend. No matter how people choose to travel, many find holiday traveling to be taxing. The motorist group AAA says that roughly 43 million people travel at least 50 miles from home for the Thanksgiving holiday. W ith so many people flying the friendly skies or on roads or railw ays, there is a good chance individuals w ill encounter delays and some frustration. M inimizing the challenges associated w ith holiday travel makes the experience a bit easier. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Readers Sound Off on Letting Cats Outside DEAR READERS: My recent letter from a pet mom who strongly believes cats should be allowed outside really touched a nerve among readers. They sent in some great responses, both for and against. Only a few are published here due to space constraints, but you can read all of them, unedited, at www. pawscorner.com. Here are just a few:

Come in for your cleaning!

DEAR PAWS: I do not have a cat, but I would keep them indoors because of the dangers from and to them. And I do not let my dog run free either. -- Mary Ann C.

WHITENING SPECIAL: Opalescence Bleach Kits $79.95 for 10 night supply $40.00 for 4 night supply

DEAR PAWS: My current cat thrives on being outdoors, and she loves coming in and being a lap cat, too. I never let my cat stay outside all night, however; definitely more dangers then. -- Carol T., Leicester, New York DEAR PAWS: I think a person who lets any of their pets roam freely outside is uncaring, selfish and inconsiderate. A dictionary says this of a pet: “any domesticated or tame animal that is kept as a companion and cared for affectionately.” -Signed, I love my pet

www.drkubiniec.com (585) 343-5865 180 Washington Ave, Batavia NY

DEAR PAWS: Our pet cats still have an instinct to kill and be wild and free, just like big cats have. About the ticks: Just pull them off, put a little medicine on the bite, and that is that. -- Adrian M. DEAR PAWS: I agree with you. I lost two inside/outside cats when living in Florida. One got killed in the road; one got killed by a neighbor’s dog. After that I kept cats inside. -- Linda K. DEAR PAWS: I just can’t understand someone saying they “love having a cat,” but they certainly don’t seem to love the mess they leave in everyone else’s yards! -- Becky H. What are your thoughts on the issue? Send them, or any pet care questions, to ask@pawscorner.com.

Ninety-six percent of American families gather each Thanksgiving.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The famous Battle of Hastings didn’t take place in Hastings, but a town seven miles away, today called Battle.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * You can cut the bitterness in some varieties of greens by soaking them in ice water for roughly an hour before serving. Use a salad spinner to get all of the water off. * “Place an ice cube (or ice chips) in carpet divots left behind by furniture legs. This will help the fibers “plump up,” and the spot will disappear!” -- A.I. in Utah * Remove the annoying sticky residue from price tags with WD-40 or baby oil. This is for use on hard surfaces only. If you are unsure, test in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure the oil doesn’t leave a stain where the tag was. * “To help repel the dust on baseboards between cleanings, wipe with a used dryer sheet. To make this even easier, you can put the dryer sheet over a Swiffer-type floor cleaner. This way, you don’t even have to bend down.” -- M.E. in Alabama * Felt circles are great for putting under small appliances on the kitchen counter. They are easier to move around, and they won’t scratch the countertops. You can find them at the hardware store, or make your own by cutting out what you need from a piece of felt and attaching it to the bottom of your appliance with double-stick tape ... or even a drop of glue! * Running a washing machine that isn’t full not only wastes energy and water, it also wastes money because you’re paying to run more washes. Always fill the machine -- but remember not to overload it! This applies to your dishwasher, too.

DID YOU KNOW? As holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, retailers who use apps and mobile responsive websites to reach more customers may benefit by making a concerted effort to reach older shoppers. According to Nielsen’s Mobile Measurement, 26 percent of the more than 100 million mobile shoppers are 55 and older, while an additional 40 percent are between the ages of 25 and 44. Those figures might surprise some retailers who are quick to associate mobile shopping with digital-native Millennials. Nielsen’s Fourth-Quarter 2014 Mobile Multicultural Insights report even noted that Hispanics are more inclined to shop via mobile than non-Hispanic, white smartphone owners. Retailers may also be interested to know that more and more shoppers are turning to apps instead of websites to do their shopping. Between the fourth quarter of 2013 and the fourth quarter of 2014, Nielsen reports that 101.4 million smartphone users accessed a shopping app. By the fourth quarter of 2015, that figure had risen to 109.9 million users. Gingerbread is a broad term that can describe anything from a firm and crispy cookie to a moist, soft cake. Traditionally, gingerbread is seasoned with ginger, cloves, nutmeg, and other aromatic spices. Molasses and brown sugar counteract the spice with sweetness. North Americans have been baking gingerbread in various shapes or forms for more than 200 years, and the recipes even pre-date the American revolution. However, gingerbread dates back even further to the Shakespearean era, with The Bard having mentioned it in one of his plays. Gingerbread’s name can be trace to medieval England and once referred to any kind of preserved ginger. The term went on to reference ginger-flavored cakes in the 15th century, and gingerbread eventually became popular throughout the world. Even though gingerbread cakes and cookies have been made for centuries, Germans are often credited with creating gingerbread houses, according to Smithsonian. They were probably modeled after the witch’s candy cottage in the German fairy tale, “Hansel and Gretel.” Even though gingerbread can be made any time of year, it is particularly associated with the Christmas season, with gingerbread men and other fanciful shapes turning up on cookie platters.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

“I’m dreading fall. It is a terrifying season,” he says... “Everything shriveling up and dying.” I don’t know how to answer. Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale. I’ve never thought to be frightened of it. ~Lauren DeStefano, Wither

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Get rid of your old holiday lights. Still using the same Christmas lights you used in 1995? Such lights are likely incandescent bulbs that are considerably less efficient than today’s LED Christmas lights. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that LED lights consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. In addition, the OEERE says that LED holiday lights are easier to install and that as many as 25 strings of lights can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket.

COPD Lung Function Can’t be Restored

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your recent column on pulmonary fibrosis. I especially appreciate knowing that there are medications known to slow the progression of lung disease, reduce exacerbations and reduce mortality. With a 20-year-old diagnosis of COPD and having been prescribed medications to reduce exacerbations, you might imagine my interest in your article. I’m wondering how pulmonary fibrosis differs from COPD and if the two medications that you mention (pirfenidone and nintedanib) might be helpful in slowing the progression of lung disease in patients such as myself. Have any studies been completed using these medications on patients with COPD? -- S.A. ANSWER: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease -- its two main forms are emphysema and chronic bronchitis -- usually, but not invariably, is a result of long-term exposure to lung toxins, especially smoke. In the most common case of COPD, due to cigarette smoking (at least, that’s the most common in North America and Europe: cooking fires are still a common cause in less developed countries), stopping the exposure will dramatically slow down further damage. Unfortunately, there are no established treatments that can restore lung function in people with moderate to advanced COPD. Pulmonary fibrosis is, by contrast, a rare disease; about 30,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed each year (compare that with the 9 million people in the U.S. diagnosed with chronic bronchitis last year). The exact mechanism of action of pirfenidone and nintedanib is not known, but they are not thought to be effective in COPD. Surprisingly, I did not find a published trial looking at whether these drugs might be effective. The need for new therapies to treat COPD is so great that I would have thought some researcher might have tried it, despite the long odds. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

ARE REGULAR DENTAL VISITS REALLY NECESSARY? The adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” can refer to the importance of regular dental visits. Dental professionals can screen for mouth, head, and neck cancers, easily treatable if caught in the early stages; dental hygienists focus on preventive dental health and treating gum disease. Dentists are also able to advise on options when it comes to tooth whitening, since dental offices are the only places one should get teeth professionally whitened. Routine visits also help in identifying the onset of gum disease and dental decay and other potential problems. It is important to be proactive. Seeing a dentist regularly can pinpoint any irregularities before issues become problematic and costly. As part of your healthcare team, we are concerned about all aspects of your

health. If a medical condition comes to our attention during a dental exam, you can be sure we will discuss the issues with you as well as any other healthcare provider if you choose. We bring you our dental column as a way to inform our friends and neighbors here in Batavia of the many benefits of professional dentistry. For gentle dental care for the family, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, we’ll give you a reason to smile! P. S. Like humans, giraffes also have 32 teeth, but most of them are positioned in the back of their mouths, which is why giraffes don’t have pearly white smiles!

DID YOU KNOW? According to Let’s Move!, a comprehensive initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity, doctors are concerned that the rise of obesity in children and teens may lead to problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and sleep apnea as they age. Children who are obese may have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and an abnormal glucose tolerance, increasing their risk factors for cardiovascular disease. But poor physical health is not the only concern parents should have if their children are obese. Overweight and obese children are often targets of social discrimination, which can negatively affect their selfesteem and may even hinder their academic and social functioning. Parents concerned about their children’s weight should consult their children’s physicians and recognize that a combination of daily exercise and a healthy diet is the most effective way to help kids lose weight and maintain a healthy weight into adulthood. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Choosing coverage. When choosing how much coverage to purchase, it’s easy to go overboard and aim for as much as possible. However, many financial advisors suggest purchasing enough coverage to pay for funeral costs and a level of income replacement you can comfortably afford. If your spouse does not work, you should consider purchasing enough coverage so he or she can afford to pay the family’s day-to-day cost of living expenses.

“Education is that which remains when one has forgotten everything he learned in school....” ~ Albert Einstein Obviously, Einstein was speaking of so-called higher education. Our basic primary schools teach us to read, write and calculate.... the foundation of all future learning.... and these skills cannot be underestimated. Perhaps the most important thing we learn as we advance in our studies is that we have much more to be learned. The more we learn, the more we appreciate the value and the power of knowledge. We learn that we can never know everything but we also learn that we can find out, from various sources, what we need to know. We recognize that there is sometimes a need for a non-traditional, minimum service. We can supply whatever a family desires at whatever price they feel to be appropriate.

FINANCING FUNERALS According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives. AUTO SECTION

A significant percentage of teenagers killed in auto accidents weren’t wearing their seatbelts at the time of death. All drivers should wear seatbelts, and parents should set a positive example by wearing their seatbelts whenever riding in a car.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish. This includes not only the paint, but the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior. Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts. High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection. Speak with an automotive retailer or even the car dealership if you are unsure which products will make your car’s parts most durable for winter weather. Do not stop washing your car just because the weather is cold. Slushy, wet roads and snow-melting salts can speed up the formation of rust or other decay on the undercarriage of the vehicle. These materials will need to be periodically cleaned off. Flush the underside of the vehicle whenever possible, taking advantage of any dry, slightly warmer days.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Social Security Gets Big Benefits Bump The news is in. Our Social Security benefit for 2022 will increase by 5.9%, slightly less than the 6.1% estimate the government put out this summer. Still, that’s much greater than the 1.3% increase we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. The average monthly dollar increase will be $92, making the average benefit $1,657 per month for a single person. For a couple, a $154 increase would come to $2,753 per month. The official mail on the cost-of-living adjustment will come out in December. I’ve done my calculations for next year, and once again I shake my head. We’ve been notified already that I’ll have a rent increase. Heating fuel is likely to go up 47%. We all know what has happened at the grocery store. Medicare Part B is sure to go up, maybe a $10 per month increase. There is one worrying note, and we need to think about how it will play out for us individually. The question is: Will that increase move us into a higher tax bracket? It depends on our provisional income. That number is any income (pension, wages, dividends and more) not from Social Security, plus half the amount of Social Security. Those of us who come in under $25,000 won’t have a federal tax put on our Social Security. If that number is between $25,000 and $34,000, there will be a tax on half of our Social Security income. Over that and it goes up to a tax on 85% of our Social Security income. If your situation for 2022 is likely to put you in the category of having to pay taxes on your Social Security benefit, you can elect to have them take money out of your check each month. If you want to learn about that, call the IRS at 1-800-772-1213 and ask for IRS Form W-4V. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

SOMEONE YOU LOVE IS LIVING WITH DEMENTIA—NOW WHAT? PART II BY NANCY SMYTH Helping caregivers find peace-of-mind. Understandably, several anxieties are commonly experienced by new residents and their families. Quality care staff will respond with compassion and flexibility to ease the transition to care while safeguarding your loved one’s pride and dignity. They should also carefully evaluate each resident’s reactions every step of the transition, developing a care plan as the move progresses. Every resident and situation is unique; however, the following guidelines can help create a successful “moving day” for you and your loved one. Don’t introduce the move too soon, or too often. Depending on the level of dementia involved, discussing the impending move may produce confusion and anxiety for your loved one when you broach the subject. Here are some additional strategies you can and should utilize to ensure the best transition possible: • Solicit your physician’s help. Many people accept the professional advice of a physician more easily than the personal opinions of family members. • Ask your physician to prescribe the move to an assisted living residence based on the individual’s health care needs. • Ask the physician to discuss the recommendation and the reasons with both you and your loved one present. If your loved one again raises objections to the move, you can refer back to the doctor’s advice. •

Consult your physician regarding appropriate medication.

• Take it step-by-step and remember, this is a unique process for each family and Elder. Consider easing the transition from your loved one’s home to a new home by introducing the facility and services in stages: • Consider bringing your loved one for “just a visit”—enjoy lunch and an activity, then go back home.

Bring familiar and personally important items from home. When your loved ones have their own rooms, this not only allows for privacy, but provides the opportunity to truly individualize one’s living space. Furniture, artwork, photographs, and personal mementos help create an atmosphere that affirms the individual’s past and present and helps reassure the resident. Please understand that change is difficult for everyone involved. It is not uncommon for family members to experience a multitude of unexpected, even conflicting emotions when the move to a facility becomes real. If you have been the primary caregiver, you may experience everything from sadness and anger to guilt and relief. These feelings are all part of a normal grieving process. This is a major change for the entire family, and even members who have not expressed interest in the planning stages may suddenly become involved once the decision is made. Not only the timing of the move, but the location of the facility, payment arrangements, Power of Attorney and Health Care Proxy issues can all come into question at this time. Staff should meet with any friends and family significant to the new resident to help facilitate appropriate, informed decisions.

• Consider a short-term respite stay to give the Elder the opportunity to make the decision about the move.

Helping the new resident adjust to staff as caregivers:

• Give positive cues. Although people living with dementia may have difficulty interpreting and communicating with words, they tend to be sensitive to emotional cues.

For some, it is appropriate for the family to arrange significant visiting time during the first few days; others find it is best to allow time for the resident to transfer dependence and trust to the new caregivers. Each move is different, and staff should collaborate with you in evaluating what appears to ease your loved one into the new surroundings.

Creating a Successful Transition: Even with careful planning, extra attention and reassurance, the combination of dementia and a major life change can temporarily produce an even greater level of anxiety and agitation for new residents. Many older people accumulate a variety of prescribed medications for age-related disorders which may contribute to panic, confusion, restlessness, and insomnia-all of which could add to the new resident’s anxiety. If your loved one seems overly anxious about the move, ask your physician to review his/her current medications and consider additional medication to ease symptoms for the initial transition period. Consider a Companion or Personal Aide:

Share with the staff. Prior to admission, each family is asked to complete a social history. From this history, staff can appreciate everyday preferences as well as introduce familiar names, places and occupations into their daily interactions. This social history can be especially helpful during the initial move to understand what will calm and comfort the new resident. At any point, families are encouraged to contact the staff with additional information or concerns. Nancy Smyth is the CEO of the Rochester Presbyterian Home, a leading provider of Memory Care since 1992. Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com

Under some circumstances, it may be useful to engage the services of a private aide. If your loved one is prone to wandering, panic, or getting up in the middle of the night, you and the new resident may feel more reassured by the presence of one-on-one companionship for a few days. Typically, a resident begins to accept the new surroundings, new faces and new routines very quickly, but you may want to consider this short-term comfort measure. We can help you make these arrangements.

DID YOU KNOW? Designed to serve as the unofficial kickoff to the holiday charitable giving season, Giving Tuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the United States. While events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become incredibly popular among holiday shoppers looking for great deals on gifts for their loved ones, Giving Tuesday aims to capitalize on the holiday spirit of giving by celebrating philanthropy and promoting charitable giving. Giving Tuesday began in 2012 and was the brainchild of the team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at New York City’s 92nd Street Y, which has brought people together around the values of service and giving since 1874. Nonprofits, civic organizations, for-profit businesses and corporations, individuals, and families have participated in Giving Tuesday since its inception. In 2015, with the cooperation of donors, volunteers and organizations in 71 countries, the Giving Tuesday movement raised nearly $117 million. More information about Giving Tuesday is available at www.GivingTuesday.org.

S E V RA Good Samaritans I wish to give a huge thank you to two good Samaritans who helped retrieve my Golden Retriever on Friday, October 22nd, who was going back and forth in the middle of Main Street in Springwater. I am very grateful also to all of the traffic which stopped from both directions and showed such patience until my beloved pet was safe. It was just a clear reminder that there are a lot of wonderful, caring people in the world! - Truly grateful, Carol R. Rochester Philharmonic What a treat to listen to the RPO this past Saturday as they performed the score of Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. And to watch the movie on the big screen as the music was played live was a great experience. The shower scene was especially hair-raising! We're so lucky to have such talent in our area!

Better spent I love football, but the owners of the Buffalo Bills are working on a plan to build a new stadium at the cost of over 1 billion dollars. To do this, they are asking taxpayers to help pay the bill. Then we have multi-millionaires paying even wealthier multi-billionaires for a 10 minute thrill ride into space. My question is this: what has happened to our humanity? What has happened to our value system? Each night on the news, we are witness to poverty and famine beyond belief in many countries - not to mention our own. Let’s re-evaluate our priorities. How many starving children could we feed and provide medical care for with the money spent on frivolity? What an idiot! Joe Manchin is holding this country hostage because of his personal interests in coal mining! The President of the United States went to Glasgow for the all-important COP26 meeting without a legislative commitment thanks to Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia! The earth is burning up, and we all need to act fast if we want an environment that is safe to live in, especially for our children. Manchin should be the first senator impeached! Boo to you! I would like to say to the person who stole part of my trailer hitch in the [local town] area, you must have some guts. As you were stealing my trailer hitch, you must have seen my license plate that says “Disabled Veteran.” This was a very costly hitch. I hope you are proud of yourself. I use this hitch for hauling dirt and other things for our home. That is why it is a tri-ball hitch. I hope you feel good about yourself.

BATAVIA, NY • 585-343-4899 • CEDARSTREETONLINE.COM GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it. Page 36

CDL A TANKER POSITIONS

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.
