“A grateful thought toward heaven is of itself a prayer.....” ~ G.E. Lessing Nearly everyone agrees that we have much to be thankful for and that we owe much to a beneficent providence for our many blessings. Certainly we cannot credit our own meager abilities for all of the good fortune. We have to believe that we were somehow guided to the good things that we have. On Thanksgiving Day, families gather to give thanks to God. Such formal recognition of our dependence upon Divine Providence is good, but throughout the year, each grateful thought is a prayer of thanksgiving and every day is, as it should be, Thanksgiving Day. Our staff is thankful for the many wonderful friendships they have formed in this community through our years of service.

Thank you, election workers! I want to thank all the election workers in Caledonia on 11/3/20 for their help in getting through the system quickly because I had had spinal surgery the week before. Although my husband and I had tried to vote early, those lines were too long. You workers in Caledonia were kind and most helpful, as is my husband, Morris! Thank you! Donna Mummery
A joy to see! Sincerest apology to “Trick or Treaters” that stopped at my house in Mumford. I forgot to close the door since I was not prepared. You were very nice and a real joy to see. Thank you for being of good cheer!
Embarrassed On an early voting day, as a [local town] resident, I was ashamed and embarrassed at the flower bed in front of the [local] center. Boards were broken in the flower bed; all in disarray. A couple from [local town] were behind me in line, and I was sad they had to see that. We are better than this; this is no way to represent our town!
absolutely loves her job, the work environment, and the people she works with. This week, she was shopping using the Instacart application. A customer thought she was on her personal cell phone, which looks like the device employees use to shop for customers to fill their phone orders. The customer yelled at our daughter, which was shocking and upsetting to our daughter. Although it was a good lesson for our daughter on how to manage unexpected circumstances, it would be helpful if people would take a few minutes to understand what is really going on before making judgments. We are disappointed by the rude customer but very proud of our daughter!

Thank you! I had great difficulty locating a medical facility in Geneseo. Staff at a different facility tried to assist me but their directions were not complete enough. As a last resort I approached the Pharmacy Dept.

at Geneseo Wegmans. A woman there was gracious enough to attempt to help me but could not access the information needed on her computer. She arranged for me to be seated in the consultation area and located a gentleman to assist me. He proceeded to position the computer so we could both view the screen and then proceeded to bring up the area in question in living color! Having the directions so clearly depicted made it possible for me to keep the appointment for the procedure
needed to keep a doctor’s appointment. Avoiding another trip and having to reschedule my doctor’s appointment was a great help to me! Thanks to Wegmans Pharmacy from someone who is not a client of theirs!
Bad Driveway II I had my driveway replaced in July. Its course stones and different shades of black show very poorquality material and workmanship. I was told the owner would fill the holes and smooth the surface. After numerous, unanswered calls, I notified the BBB. I then received a call from the salesperson asking me to withdraw my complaint. They stated, ”We will come and make any necessary repairs within the month of October 2020. That is my word, and we will stand by our warranty that we provide here at [local company].” It is midNovember. I have not heard from them and do not expect to. Large stones are coming loose, and I am concerned about water damage this winter from continuous freezing and thawing.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In March 1980, multiple female students at Southern California universities complained that someone had surreptitiously painted their toenails while they studied in the library. The perp, dubbed “Leonardo da Toenail,” was caught but released, since police hadn’t discovered him in the act. Apprehended again a year later, he was ordered to a hearing at the city attorney’s office but didn’t show up and was never seen again. * Academically gifted actress Sharon Stone skipped both kindergarten and first grade, entering second grade at age 5. * At least six ravens are kept at the Tower of London at all times, due to an old superstition that says: “If the ravens leave the Tower, the Kingdom will fall.” The birds even have part of a wing clipped so if they do decide to fly around, they won’t get very far.

MAKE MEALTIME MORE ECO-FRIENDLY An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come. As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly with relatively little effort. Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted.
Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.
Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStar®, toaster ovens consume between onethird to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far more eco-friendly option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals for one or two people. Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. EnvironmentMassachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals. Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk cartons, and other items necessary to prepare meals at home are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier than ever to ensure these items are given new life after being used. Men and women who reside in areas without such pickups can go it alone, collecting recyclable materials and periodically transporting them to nearby recycling centers. Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL Squirrels have a (sophisticated) plan out there. Squirrels hiding food in autumn for the upcoming winter is a familiar sight. And squirrels are more organized than many people may know. Groundbreaking research released in 1991 found that, even when squirrels bury that stash of nuts closely to one another, they will each return to the precise location of their personal cache. Recent research also has shown that squirrels bury their stash based on certain traits, such as the type of nut being buried. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Batavia Ophthalmology
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
False Positives Plague Lung Cancer Screening --DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 74-year-old female who smoked a pack a day for 40-plus years, having quit smoking about 18 years ago. As a precaution, I asked my primary doctor to order a screening CT scan, knowing that I’m a candidate for lung cancer. The results showed a 3-mm nodule in one lung, and I was advised not to worry and that my doctor would order another CT scan in six months. I can’t help but wonder if this is cancer and if an oncologist, after six months, will ask me why I waited so long to see him. -- T.W. ANSWER: Medical professionals have been attempting to screen for lung cancer for decades. Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it. CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives will be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small; 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent one lung cancer death. There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans and sometimes an invasive procedure to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did. The small size of your nodule means your risk that this nodule is cancer is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancer is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You should also have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing. The second concern is that current smokers who consider screening should receive intensive advice and help in quitting smoking. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker and quitting remains the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health.

DEPRESSION COMMON BUT TREATABLE It’s normal to experience feelings of sadness and grief from time to time. But when these feelings are prolonged or interfere with daily life, they may be symptomatic of depression. Depression can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or economic status. The National Institute of Mental Health says around 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Understanding depression can help those dealing with the disorder.
Tongue scraping may sound a little unsettling, but it is an important step in obtaining a clean, healthy mouth. It is also one of the best ways to retain pleasant breath long after brushing. Your tongue may feel smooth most of the time, but it is actually covered in tiny bumps called “papillae” that are responsible for tasting and feeling the texture of your food. However, they can also harbor bad bacteria that result in sour breath, cavities, and gum disease, not to mention food debris and dead skin cells. Although brushing your tongue can help, using a specially designed tongue scrapper is much more effective at removing the bacteria and debris from your mouth, leaving it cleaner and fresher.
While oral bacteria can be your teeth’s worst enemy, routine tongue scraping, brushing, flossing, and professional dental checkups can be your body’s best friends. Has it been so long since your last dental visit that you can’t remember when it was? Then why not take charge of your dental health and call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment? You’ll find that nothing is more economical than regular professional attention to your oral hygiene. Call for an appointment at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Tongue scrappers are made from plastic, copper, or stainless steel.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
Upcycling: Transforming the ‘Old’ into a Better ‘New’ Turn old or discarded furniture, cabinets and doors into fresh new creations through “upcycling” -- high-end “recycling” that reduces trash at landfills by refurbishing or repurposing existing pieces, often enhancing the value. Family furniture: Save chairs, tables, and other furniture passed down through the generations by doing repairs, if needed, and staining/painting to suit your current decor.

* This is a wonderful tip received via e-mail: If you have a panic button for your car alarm, keep your keys by the bedside. If you experience a problem during the night, trip the panic alarm. Let your trusted neighbors know about your intention, and they will be able to assist you. * “Great gravy is only a plastic bag away! This is my tip for separating the fat from pan drippings to make gravy. I take a quart-size plastic bag and set it in a glass measuring cup. Pour the pan drippings through a strainer, right into the bag. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and the fat will separate to the top. Seal the bag, and snip a small hole in a bottom corner, drain the liquid into a saucepan to make gravy. It’s that easy.” -- T.C. in Idaho * Whenever I am baking and the recipe calls for, say, 1 cup of honey (or some other sticky substance), I used to pour the honey into the measuring cup but then have a hard time getting all the honey back out of the cup and into the mixing bowl. Now I rinse the measuring cup with water right before measuring, or spray with nonstick cooking spray. It slides right out! * To create a self-watering area for potted plants while you are on vacation, set plants in the bathtub or in a kiddie pool and use a length of cotton rope to wick water from the bathtub to the plant’s roots. You can either stick it up the holes in the bottom of the pot or dig it down a few inches into the soil. This should get you by for a week or so.

Downgrading Cat’s Fresh Food Diet
--DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was furloughed from my job in April and have been getting by on savings and an unemployment check. With no new job yet, I need to drastically cut back expenses to get through this winter. My cat “Silk” is 9 years old and eats a special diet of prescription canned food plus fresh pet food from the grocery. Will she stay healthy if I temporarily replace her diet with a commercial cat food? -- Henry in Worcester, Massachusetts DEAR HENRY: Thank you for putting Silk first in your household budget, especially in these tough times! Give your cat’s veterinarian a call and discuss the situation. Would a four- to six-month break from prescription canned food be OK, and not threaten Silk’s health? The answer depends on the condition for which she’s eating special food. You can probably stop buying those prepackaged fresh pet foods for your cat, at least until you get financially back on track. Instead, prepare a few days’ worth of fresh cat food at home by steaming rice, peas and a protein like chicken or tuna until fully cooked (do not add spices or salt) and smashing together. Cool and store in the refrigerator. Fresh food needs to be supplemented with a formulated cat food so that Silk gets key nutrients during this time. The veterinarian should be able to recommend an off-the-shelf cat food, either dry or canned, that will meet her needs for a few months. If she is taking medications as well, don’t skimp on her medicines, and be sure to include them in your budgeting. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner. com. Virtual Schooling: It’s
all Routine
BY AMANDA DUDEK
S
chooling is different for students this fall thanks to hybrid and completely virtual learning. Many parents now find themselves on the front lines of the learning process: in their child’s classroom. If you find yourself concerned keeping up with your child’s classes and assignments, you are not alone. We reached out to teachers from across our readership area for their thoughts on hybrid and virtual schooling, keeping up with assignments to avoid falling behind, easing stress on your child, and how to best support him or her as well as sharing insider tips for virtual schooling success. Here are some of our takeaways. Encourage focus to close any gaps from last spring. While not all students experienced gaps, some patterns have emerged. “I cannot speak for all students, but I would say reading skills were affected,” said Aimee Schwenzer (4th Grade, Dansville). David Resseguie (ELA, Brockport) concurs. “I have definitely noticed lower levels of reading than in previous years,” he said. “Reading stimulates skill growth and the process of learning.” Teachers expected there would be some gaps, and Natalie Cottone (4th, Dansville) and Todd Putnam (ELA, Webster) compared the spring shutdown effect to that of a longer “summer slide.” Our Takeaway: Read, read, read... independently and together! Re-establish expectation of learning. “Students have had to relearn being a learner,” explained Schwenzer. Setting learning expectations may take a little longer this year. “Kids are struggling to get back into the routines we had when we were full time,” said Lisa Tubinis (8th Grade Science, Holley), citing fewer weekly days in the classroom. “Most students got out of routine, even of just getting up in the morning,” added Patricia McGrath (10th, 11th & 12th, Fairport) before adding a positive. “Students who were able to come in person have been so excited to be back. They appreciate being in school with teachers, staff, friends and connections.” Our Takeaway: Set clear learning expectations with your child. Avoid the procrastination snowball. Each subject, concept, and grade are spiraled, building upon each other. Missing critical class content creates gaps which, if unrecognized, can create major problems as students continue. Incomplete assignments can quickly add up, sinking a student’s grades. “If students leave all their assignments until Friday, they typically shut down,” explained Tubinis. Natalie concurs, adding that not keeping up frequently creates a “snowball effect,” making it difficult for a student to get caught up later. Importantly, students’ mindset may need to shift from spring to fall. “Things were up in the air in the spring,” Putnam recalled. “Now, this is part of their learning, not just review or trying something out. Missing assignments affect students grades wise, where it may not have as much last spring.” Our Takeaway: Complete classwork assignment by assignment, lesson by lesson, day by day. Establish a time and place to complete each week’s assignments. Routine: With so much learning currently taking place at home, children are expected to organize their work, have good time management, and schedule their weeks. “We are expecting kids to manage these things at a grown-up level,” Schwenzer observed. “It’s challenging.” Putnam agrees. “When I was 12, I would have been over my head,” he said. “A lot of these time management and planning skills come from experience over time.” Yu, Resseguie, and Jenna Murgillo (5th Grade) of Brockport remind us that young people thrive with routine and structure, encouraging parents to work with their children to create a schedule

and to post it where it’s very visible. Putnam adds that most children won’t have solid answers when it comes to time management, giving parents a great opportunity to step in and support them in creating a routine that works for them. Importantly, McGrath (l-r) David Ressiguie, reminds us that this is such a Jenna Murgillo, Randall Yu stressful time for kids, and giving them routines, structure, and expectations can help ease that stress while encouraging them to thrive. “Help them know what to expect in a time that is so unpredictable,” she advised. “Give yourself grace and forgive yourself if you make a mistake.” Our Takeaway: Aimee Create an effective weekly plan with your child. Schwenzer Environment: Create a quiet space with few distractions. “You know your child best,” said Schwenzer. “Modify and change the space so it’s more accessible to them. Limit distractions and distraction opportunities.” Putnam adds that a quiet space, without a TV and other electronics, would be ideal. Our Natalie Takeaway: Minimize both noise and distractions. Cottone Communication: This has been virtual learning’s bright spot. Yu, Resseguie and Murgillo have noted higher levels of parent communication as has Cottone. “Constant communication is so important right now,” she shared. “We are communicating almost in real time.” “This experience is helping our kids be tech savvy,” Lisa Tubinis added Schwenzer. Cottone agreed, adding, “The biggest difference between the spring and fall is the fact that students are much more computer savvy, and I am, too!” Yu, Resseguie and Murgillo concurred. “We should see a very tech savvy group coming through.” Tubinis encouraged parents to use the technology to make sure children are completing their remote Todd assignments. “Check their grades often,” she Putnam encouraged. “If you catch missing assignments as they happen, it will be much easier for your kids to make them up than at the 5 or 10 week mark.” Our Takeaway: Keep lines of communication open, check grades, and ask questions. As we navigate hybrid and virtual learning Patricia throughout the 2020-2021 school year, McGrath and McGrath Cottone remind us that this is just temporary. Tubinis echoed this, sharing, “We want kids to have a successful year. We are all working towards the same goal. None of us is alone.” ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

HIKING: Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. That’s because few things in nature are as captivating as a park or forest w hen the fall foliage is in full bloom. Early fall also boasts ideal temperatures for hiking, as the mercury likely w on’t rise enough or sink low enough to produce the kind of extreme temperatures that can compromise a hiker’s afternoon. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allow ing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings.

HELPING KIDS FIND HOBBIES Much like adults can benefit from participating in hobbies, children can reap rewards from engaging in hobbies. According to the Child Development Institute, hobbies give children a chance to express themselves. The CDI also notes that hobbies can play an important role in children’s self-discovery and boost their self-esteem. Some children may discover hobbies on their own, requiring little if any assistance on the part of their parents. For example, some kids may display an interest in music that parents, even those with no such musical inclination, can foster by purchasing certain instruments. But some children may need a little more prompting, and parents of such boys and girls can take certain steps to help their youngsters find rewarding hobbies.

Involve kids in your own hobbies. Kids look up to their parents and often want to emulate what their mothers and fathers do. If possible, involve children in your own hobbies. Gardeners can teach their youngsters how to grow and tend to a garden, while painters can host family painting nights where everyone is encouraged to create their own masterpiece. Parents whose hobbies are more adult-oriented, like woodworking, can still involve their children. For example, work with children to design a new item, then show them how the item goes from paper to finished product; just avoid allowing them to use any unsafe tools or machines. Let kids choose an activity. While some children might take to hobbies their parents favor, others might need to be given some freedom to find their own activities. Afford youngsters this chance, recognizing that it might take some time before kids find an activity that genuinely sparks their passion. Be a source of encouragement. Some hobbies may prove more difficult than kids first imagined, requiring some perseverance before they can be enjoyed fully. In such instances, observe youngsters while they engage in the activity. If they appear to be enjoying themselves but are periodically frustrated, encourage them to keep trying. If kids appear to be disinterested in overcoming any struggles, then they might benefit by pursuing another hobby. Don’t hesitate to focus on fun. Hobbies can teach kids valuable lessons and provide a sense of fulfillment, but it’s important that parents not overlook the importance of fun in regard to their children’s hobbies. Hobbies can provide children with the same respite from busy schedules that they do adults, and that break should be as fun as possible. Page 22

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Act Now to Change Your Medicare Plan
Have you finished making your decisions about your Medicare plan for 2021? If you’re going to make a change, you have only a short time to pick a new one. The deadline is Dec. 7. There are so many options: Medicare Advantage, a supplemental plan or the traditional Medicare. And there are many things to consider within those options -- the drugs we currently take, eye exams, hearing aids, annual preventive tests and more. The place to start is with your current plan. By now you should have received your Medicare Annual Notice of Change Letter if you have an Advantage or Part D plan. (You won’t get one for a Supplemental plan.) The letter will itemize any changes to your 2021 plan, including price. Compare your current plan with any changes in your plan for next year. Have your needs changed this year? Are there new drugs you’re taking? Is your doctor included in your network? What about the pharmacy you like to use? Are you likely to need a procedure in 2021? What else are you likely to need in the next year? Look at your Medicare & You 2021 book that came in the mail. Check inside the front cover for information on lowering insulin costs, acupuncture for back pain, telehealth visits and more. (If you can’t find your copy, go online to www.medicare.gov/Pubs/pdf/10050-Medicare-and-You.pdf.) If you want to consider making a change, go online to Medicare.gov and look at plans for your area. For any changes to a supplemental plan, call that plan directly. Don’t try to do this all in one day. Give yourself time to consider what you need, and ask questions. Get personalized help at State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) at www.shiptacenter.org if you need it. Click on SHIP Locator for listings by state, or call them at 877-839-2675.

Even though a type of word puzzle was found inscribed on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb, the first known crossword puzzles are credited to journalist Arthur Wynne, who designed his “word-cross” in 1913. Wynne’s puzzle appeared in a Sunday newspaper called New York World.
Crossword puzzles are word games in which the answers correspond to numbered clues. The words are put into a grid of horizontal and vertical squares to form completed, intersecting words. When all of the words are supplied correctly, the puzzle is complete. In North America and Great Britain, crossword grids traditionally have 180-degree rotational symmetry. The diagram, or placement of black squares within the grid, must be symmetric diagonally. This means that the pattern of the puzzle will appear the same if the puzzle is turned upside down.

American crossword puzzles conform to a set of established rules made popular by publisher Simon & Schuster, the original crossword puzzle publisher. The standard puzzle grid size is 15x15. However, 17x17, 19x19 and 21x21 also are used. Smaller 13x13 also are accepted. Many crossword puzzles do not use two-letter words, and three-letter words are kept to a minimum. In addition, every letter square must be part of both an Across and a Down word. Crossword rules are different in other parts of the world. For example, in Japan, the corner squares of a crossword puzzle must be white. Despite once publishing a statement describing crosswords as a “sinful waste in the utterly futile finding of words the letters of which will fit into a prearranged pattern” in 1924, The New York Times routinely produces what many consider to be the world’s most challenging crossword puzzles. Stanley Newman is credited with completing a New York Times crossword faster than anyone in history. In 1996, Newman completed a crossword in two minutes, 14 seconds. Crossword puzzles appear in newspapers, magazines and kids’ activity books and are even used in school lessons to supplement vocabulary lessons. Doing these puzzles also may be good for one’s health. According to a University of California at Berkeley study, crossword puzzles may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that the more often someone engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as crosswords, the less buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are hallmarks of the disease. Doing crossword puzzles also may offer a distraction that helps people reduce stress. Crossword puzzles have a storied history. They are completed recreationally and in competitions, and cruciverbalists look forward to new puzzles in their newspapers every week.

Staining wood can transform the look of everything from fencing to decking. While wood can be beautiful in its natural state, staining can protect the wood and complement landscaping and other home design elements. Staining can seem like a simple project, and that is often true. However, certain woods, such as pine, cherry, maple, and birch, can be difficult to stain. Boards with attractive grain patterns also can absorb stain differently, resulting in blotching and uneven tone. Before beginning a staining project, it is important for homeowners to test the stain chosen on a sample piece of wood to see how the color and absorption turn out. This gives homeowners the chance to understand what they’re dealing with and time to make any necessary accommodations to achieve a more even look. Begin by gathering the necessary supplies. A pair of latex or vinyl gloves will protect your hands. Drop cloths will catch any drips or spills. Safety goggles and a dust mask provide protection if sanding is required prior to staining. If sanding is necessary, homeowners will need an orbital sander, hand sander and sandpaper. Start with the coarsest grit sandpaper and move to a higher grit for a smooth finish. Wood that is covered in paint may need to be stripped prior to sanding. Follow the directions carefully when using chemical strippers. Natural bristle paint brushes are handy for oil-based stain applications. Synthetic paint brushes can apply water-based finishes. Many do-it-yourselfers find that foam brushes or paint pads are the most handy because they provide a smooth finish and there’s no need to clean up the brushes afterward. Many professionals recommend using wood conditioners or pretreaters so that the stain will not leave blotches on the wood. This is especially important for homeowners who determined their wood is prone to uneven color absorption. Allow the conditioner to dry according to product directions. Stain should be applied so that it is evenly coated. Wipe off the excess to get the preferred color. Apply more stain as necessary to get the desired color. Many stains only offer color, so you’ll need to apply a finishing coat to protect the wood. Otherwise, look for a product that combines stain color and a finish to save time. Remember to remove knobs, hinges, and handles from a piece before staining, as the stain may affect the color of any metal hardware and damage it.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire.
