DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

According to House Beautiful, in Victorian times, Christmas trees were traditionally set up and decorated quite late in December, often on Christmas Eve. Today, the marketing blitz seems to start at or before Halloween. Psychologists say decorating early spikes people’s happy hormone, dopamine, so perhaps decorations help make/keep people happy longer. If you decorate for Christmas, when do you decorate your home?

Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING FOR THOSE WHO SEEMINGLY HAVE IT ALL Consolidate memories. Technology continues to evolve, which means that the way music, videos and photos are captured and stored is always changing. Unless a person has older gear, it’s no longer possible to watch a VHS tape featuring a family member’s graduation ceremony or reprint photographs that are on film negatives. However, shoppers can work with a company that will transfer media onto a new format, such as a thumb drive or in a cloud-based account. This can be a heartfelt gift for someone who wants to reminisce.
WHAT SMALL BUSINESSES CAN DO TO ENGAGE THEIR COMMUNITIES Offer your space. Another way business owners can engage their communities is by offering their spaces for community-based events. For example, business owners with ample parking lots can offer those lots as registration sites for charity 5Ks or other events that can utilize large and open outdoor spaces. This approach addresses a community need and draws a crowd of locals to your establishment, thus increasing the chances they will patronize the business during and after the event.

Make things easy for customers. Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touchless payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contactless payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

Turkey is often overshadow ed by other meats in refrigerated display cases, but it remains an excellent source of protein in a low -fat package. A typical 3.4- to four-ounce serving of skinless turkey breast (about the size of a deck of cards) contains around 30 grams of protein, providing about 65 percent of the average person’s recommended daily allotment of protein. Protein helps the body feel full and serves many essential functions in the body. Proteins regulate the entry of nutrients through cell w alls, help the body grow and help it to generate antibodies that fight against illness.

HISTORY OF THE THANKSGIVING PARADE Thousands of people line the streets of midtow n M anhattan every year to catch a glimpse of the balloons and performers marc hing in the M ac y’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. M illions more w ill tune in to w atch it on television. The M acy’s parade is intertw ined w ith Thanksgiving, making it as much a part of the holiday as turkey and pumpkin pie. Historians believe the parade w as instituted by European immigrants w ho made up the majority of employees at the retail giant M acy’s. In the 1920s, employees w ho w ere now proud Americans w anted to celebrate w ith traditions that w ere similar to traditions in Europe. This included a parade dow n the streets. Animals w ere borrow ed from the Central Park Zoo, bands played and marchers w ore different costumes. In 1927, concern for children lining the parade route led parade officials to replace live animals w ith the signature helium balloons people now know and love. A dragon and Felix the Cat w ere some of the first balloons. The festivities c ontinued to grow during the 1930s, w hen Santa w as added to the parade’s grow ing list of participants. 1933 w as the only year that Santa led the parade rather than closed it. During World War II, the parade w as put on hiatus, as the rubber for the balloons and the helium w as donated to the w ar effort. The parade resumed in 1945 and w as televised only in New York. The 1947 film “ M iracle on 34th Street” made the parade even more popular. NBC televised the parade nationw ide the follow ing year, draw ing view ers from all over the country. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
How to Distinguish Heart Disease Symptoms From Panic Attacks --DEAR DR. ROACH: How can you tell with at least a moderate degree of certainty that you might really have a heart or blood pressure problem, as opposed to just having an anxiety attack that is less serious? -- D.S. ANSWER: A panic attack is an abrupt change in mental state. They are usually unexpected, sometimes with or without identifiable triggers. Symptoms of a panic attack vary from person to person, but among the most common are feelings of heart palpitations; sweating; trembling or shaking; shortness of breath; chest pain or discomfort; dizziness; numbness or a “pins and needles” feeling; abdominal pain or nausea; feeling abnormally hot or cold; feeling detached from oneself or from reality; and a fear of dying, losing control or “going crazy.” Most of us have had some of these feelings from time to time, and some of these symptoms are identical to ones of heart disease, specifically of angina pectoris -- the classic symptom of poor blood flow to the heart. There are many conditions, both medical and psychiatric, that can cause these symptoms as well, so acquiring a moderate degree of certainty isn’t always easy. A very careful history exam helps. With chest pain due to heart disease, for example, symptoms are commonly brought on by exertion; whereas with a panic disorder, there might not be a trigger, or it may be triggered by psychological stress. Some people have highly specific triggers, such as open spaces or needles. Some people can trigger a panic attack just by worrying that they are going to have one. The time course of the symptoms can be very helpful. With a panic attack, the attack starts, and chest discomfort (for example) will then occur. In people with heart disease, chest discomfort starts, and then people will get anxious. I had a wise cardiology professor who told me to always consider heart disease even if a person’s history is suggestive of a panic attack. I generally check their blood pressure and order an electrocardiogram, blood testing (including thyroid tests) and sometimes other tests when considering the diagnosis of a panic attack. There is very effective treatment available for people with panic disorder (people with recurrent unexpected panic attacks that lead to avoidant behaviors), both through therapy and medication. But your question implies that being pretty sure of the diagnosis is wise before dismissing the possibility of cardiac disease or other medical diseases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2023 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

TOP TOOTHBRUSHING MISTAKES Over time we can slip into poor tooth-brushing habits without realizing we’re doing something wrong. Proper brushing takes more than simply doing it twice a day for two minutes. In fact, many people don’t realize that they’re not brushing long enough without using a timer, which can be kept in the bathroom. Wait at least 30 minutes after eating to brush, because enamel is weakest right after eating and brushing too soon can damage teeth. Brushing too hard is another mistake that can damage enamel. Brushing longer, not harder, is the best method. And less is more when it comes to toothpaste. Using more than a pea-sized amount can expose your teeth to too much fluoride and wear them down. Correctly performed home oral hygiene carried out on a daily basis
can be the deciding factor in keeping your mouth and teeth healthy. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’ll be happy to demonstrate good brushing and flossing techniques as well as inform you about products that we know will help you maintain a healthy smile between routine dental checkups. For an appointment for family dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246. Our full service dental office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances. P.S. Make sure you replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three to four months to keep the bristles new enough to properly clean your teeth.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS
UPCOMING AUCTIONS
Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS

Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing.

D id You Know ? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

Here’s a Tip OK, I’ll say it: I love tradition, but sometimes I want to mix it up for Thanksgiving dinner. I keep the main dishes the same as they always are, but I add my drama in the details. For instance, mix your choice of herbs into a stick of softened butter. Using a plastic baggie with the corner cut off or a decorating bag, pipe the herbed butter onto a butter dish. Refrigerate and enjoy the oohs and ahs. -- JoAnn “In the week before Thanksgiving, have a leftovers day and get all those bits and pieces out of the refrigerator. It will make it easier to clean so you’ll have room for the turkey and the sides.” -- S.T. in South Carolina “For easier cooking, when making large holiday meals, simply choose two side dishes that can be oven cooked in the same amount of time at an average temperature. I like one or two that can be cooked in the microwave as well.” (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Shaggy Dogs Aren’t Impervious to Cold Weather DEAR PAW’S CORNER: On my morning walks, I’ve noticed that someone in a house down the street puts their dog outside, tied to the porch railing, with only a pan of water. They stay out there all morning. Now that the weather has turned cold, I still see this dog tied up every morning outside. Even with a shaggy coat, the dog is shivering. What can I do to stop this? -- Francesca W., via email DEAR FRANCESCA: If this person isn’t someone you know, and you’re nervous about knocking on their door to talk to them about it, then contact the animal control department for your town, city or county. If you live in an area where there is no animal control unit, call the nearest shelter or Humane Society to make a report. In cold temperatures, even temps above freezing, dogs can suffer a cold injury. Their paws and noses -- any exposed skin -- are at risk for frostbite. Hypothermia can be deadly, or it can permanently impair their immune system and overall health. A thick coat doesn’t provide as much protection from the cold as one might think.

Many cities have laws against leaving pets out in extreme cold or heat. And tying up a dog outside, even for a few hours, is also unacceptable. There is great power in being a teacher. Teachers help grow and inspire the youth to become the best versions of themselves, whatever that may be or look like. They work hard each and every day even after the school bell rings. Now, more than ever, we need young people to enter the field of education. Future Teachers of America is an organization that helps future educators prepare for the classroom and become a part of a professional community. Through mentorship and teaching opportunities, they help teachers hone their skills and become wonderful educators. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Churchville Native Madison Willow Makes Her Mark in Los Angeles BY SUZIE WELLS
M
adison Willow, a rising star in the music and acting industry, has captivated audiences with her unique blend of talent, creativity, and infectious positivity. Her musical journey began at a young age, with her mother, Jerri Sparks, recounting stories of toddler Madison tinkering on the piano. Jerri reflects that Madison “grooved to music from utero,” and says, “I would come home from work and find her on the back deck with her guitar strumming or in the living room playing piano or hear her in her room on her keyboard or ukulele singing and playing... literally all day and night.” By the time Madison was 15, she mastered piano and taught herself to play the guitar and ukulele. Madison moved to LA when she graduated from ChurchvilleChili High School and hasn’t looked back. She says her journey has been “awesome, beautiful, chaotic, wild, and amazing all at the same time! I have always been a dreamer, and it has been surreal to see my dreams come true. I always think back to my younger self and think about how starstruck she would feel if she had known I was going to be chasing after my dreams like I am.” Madison fondly recalls crafting songs at home and taking the stage in school plays. However, one of her most cherished memories is the energy she felt when she first arrived in Los Angeles. It was a moment of pure excitement and potential she hopes to recapture. In her relatively short time on the West Coast, Madison has made a name for herself on Instagram @madisonwillowofficial, where she shares vocal and acoustic covers of pop songs. She has been featured on a variety of pop TV shows and music videos, and her filmography so far includes Fables for the Witching Hour, Hellarious, and The Baka. She’s over the moon excited about the release of her first song, “Make It Stop,” just a few weeks ago. She explains that her experiences with anxiety and overthinking inspired the song, and she wanted to create a track with an upbeat Madison Willow pop sound and a message that would resonate with listeners. In the melodic song, Madison reflects on “intrusive thoughts” that fill her head and make her wonder if it’s her “fault / A bad habit / Or something [she] was born with.”
The artist says the response to the song has been nothing short of astounding, and she says, “It’s been very sweet, and I am so thankful for everyone who has been supporting me.” Madison says life and dreams fuel her art. Wise beyond her years, she transforms negative and positive life experiences into art, creating “songs or art or videos that I would need, so I hope someone else is able to watch or listen and feel more seen.” Madison envisions a future filled with more music, delving into various genres while staying true to her pop roots. She also aspires to showcase her artistic talents more on the silver screen. She says she has goals of chart-topping streams, revenue, and accolades, but more importantly she wants to “enjoy the journey itself, so I try to put more emphasis on my day-to-day happiness as an entertainer.” Personally, she wants to travel and explore other cultures, and she’d like to conquer fears such as her love-hate relationship with the ocean. Beyond musical and acting pursuits, Madison loves to skateboard, run, and create with clay, paint, and beads, and even learn more about science. Madison says most important to her now are family, loved ones, and happiness. She tries to find happiness in all moments, not just waiting for the ‘big break’ to feel happy. Madison encourages, “You have to believe in yourself before anyone else does, and when moments come when you don’t believe in yourself, just keep your vision in mind – have goals for yourself but don’t get discouraged when things don’t turn out as planned. I think life has a funny way of working it all out.” Jerri gushes that Madison’s family and friends in Churchville are so proud of Madison for pursuing her dreams! With her boundless creativity and infectious spirit, Madison is poised to leave an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.
She invites us to “Take a walk in my world / You’d get lost in it.” Listeners naturally become entranced with the bubbly tones as lyrics declare that she “can’t stop overthinking – Stuck in a daydream / Avoiding my feeling / All my decisions / I’m stuck in my head / I’m alone / With my thoughts / And I can’t turn them off.” We can all relate to such feelings of overthinking and social anxiety that seem so normal today. Madison makes reflection on this normal human fragility palatable for the masses.

Grateful for huge hearts! Two weeks ago I posted a need in the “Give & Take” section for unused cards with envelopes to send to participants in our Catholic Charities of Buffalo older adult programs in Genesee, Orleans and Erie Counties. So many wanted to help and we want to say a HUGE THANK YOU! We received so many donations of cards that our storage area is at capacity! I apologize that I wasn’t able to individually respond to every call left as there were so many. Those whose cards weren’t able to be donated, please consider offering them to a skilled nursing facility or adult day program where they can be used to brighten the day of an older adult who may be spending their birthdays and holidays without those they love. The big hearts of people in our WNY community make us so proud to do the work we do to serve those in need.
Free School Supplies and Meals The budget for the [local school] District has been approved for 20232024, which includes supplies and free meals for all students. I had three children attend [local school] and had to purchase all their school supplies and meals. Now I’m a Senior Citizen on Social Security with a fixed income, and I should not have to pay for these free supplies and meals. Voters, compare your 2022 taxes with 2023 taxes. My school taxes have gone up 21%, yet Social Security only went up 3.2%. Why should Senior Citizens have to pay so much? We have already paid our share. The Superintendent and the School Board need to address this issue.
Plowing Fields Will farmers with tractors, especially big tractors, after leaving the field onto the roads, stop and move the huge chunks of mud left on the road. Some were over a foot and a half around. I saw numerous vehicles who had to maneuver around these. Oncoming traffic plus the damage to their vehicles could be serious. I went out with one other driver and cleared what we could off the driving surface. With all these home cameras, if something serious happens, I’m sure you would be responsible. Also, if you do, please don’t roll them down on homeowners lawns. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

EFFICIENCY AT WORK Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.

HOLY SPIRIT, You who solve all problems, who lights all roads, so that I can obtain our goals. You have given us the divine gift to forgive all evils against me. I want, in this short prayer, to thank you for all things and to confirm once again, that I never want to be separated from you, even in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy to me and mine. Say for 3 consecutive days, after 3rd day, favor will be granted. This prayer must be published without mention of the favor. Thank you Holy Spirit. BT
