CUTTING YOUR ENERGY BILLS M ake sure your attic is properly ventilated. Homeow ners are practically inviting higher energy bills if there’s not w hat Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence, calls “ a continual flow of air to protect the efficiency of your attic’s insulation.” Working against achieving that: excess moisture build-up that clings to your roof’s underside in w inter from seemingly benign sources -- i.e., appliances, show ers and cooking vapors -- before ultimately soaking the insulation w hen the condensed moisture falls.

10 Jefferson Square Batavia, NY 14020 HOW TO MAKE GIFT WRAPPING EASIER Work on a hard surface. It may be tempting to lay everything out on your bed and wrap gifts while you’re binge-watching the latest Netflix series. But hard surfaces make the best places to wrap gifts. This ensures there won’t be any wrinkles in the paper and that you won’t lose supplies in the bedspread.

Green Beans Sauteed with Wild Mushrooms Serves 6 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 pound chanterelles or other wild mushrooms, cleaned and cut into bite-sized pieces Salt and freshly ground black pepper 11/2 pounds haricots verts or green beans, trimmed - Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. - Meanwhile, heat the butter and the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute, or until it becomes translucent. Add the mushrooms, cooking them until they give off their juices and then reabsorb them, 5 to 7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep the mushrooms warm on the stovetop. - Add the beans to the boiling water and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, or until slightly tender (haricots verts will take less time than green beans). Drain. - Transfer about half of the mushrooms to a small dish and keep warm. Add the beans to the mushrooms in the skillet and stir to combine. Mound the beans and the mushrooms gently on a serving platter and top with the reserved mushrooms. Season again with salt and pepper.

Christmas Savings!... Lowest Prices - Highest Quality
Pairing wine and food is a special skill that can enhance both the flavors of the meal and the beverage of choice. When dining out at a fine restaurant, employ the services of a sommelier. Sommeliers are trained and knowledgeable in all aspects of wine service. A sommelier may be responsible for making wine lists and for the delivery of wine service. Information garnered in a restaurant about wine-andfood pairings can be used when dining at home or entertaining guests.

Shoppers across the country routinely make the holiday season one of the biggest spending periods of the year. American Research Group, Inc., said that in 2015 the average predicted expenditure on gifts equaled $882, which was up from $861 the previous year. Many holiday shoppers worry about whether or not they will have enough money for gifts, while others anticipate using credit cards or other financing methods to stretch their abilities to spend even further. This can make the holiday season more stressful than it needs to be while affecting finances into the new year. Budgeting for the holidays is a great way to keep spending in check.

HOW TO ORGANIZE OFFICE GIFT EXCHANGES Close-knit groups of employees commonly exchange gifts with one another come the holiday season. Friendly coworkers enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of their friends and fellow employees, and these informal gift exchanges can benefit company morale and establish a familial atmosphere at the office. In spite of the good-natured reasons to exchange gifts with coworkers, some people are nervous about the prospect of gifting fellow employees. Questions regarding what makes for an appropriate gift or how much to spend may arise, turning office gift exchanges into potentially puzzling situations.

I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. ~Charles Dickens

PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Have the tree cut before you take it off the lot. If you typically purchase your tree from a florist or tree lot instead of a tree farm, then remember to ask the seller to recut the stem of the tree before you take it home. Tree farm trees are freshly cut, but trees sold away from the farm might have been chopped down weeks before they are ultimately sold. During the interval between being cut down and sold, trees’ vascular systems can clog and prevent the tree from getting the water it needs to survive the season. A fresh cut of the stem unclogs the system and ensures the tree will be able to consume water.

SMOKING CHANGES ORAL ENVIRONMENT According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 16 million people living in this country with a smoking-related illness. Because more than threequarters of cases of oral cancer are thought to be linked to smoking, researchers sought to find out why. There are approximately 600 species of bacteria in the human mouth. One study (all participants were age 50 and older) focused on comparing the oral bacteria of smokers to those of nonsmokers. It was found that the oral environments of smokers was very different from that of nonsmokers and ex-smokers. Levels of 150 species of oral bacteria were significantly higher in smokers, including ten percent more species of Streptococcus, which is know to promote tooth decay. Today’s column further outlines the importance of not
smoking. One of the most important parts of oral health care happens at home. Brushing and flossing properly, along with regular dental checkups, can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we invite your questions about the health of your gums and teeth. We are located at 6 Batavia City Centre. Please call 585.343.4246 and let us make an appointment for your next dental health visit. P.S. According to the research mentioned above, it takes approximately ten years for oral bacteria to return to normal levels after a smoker quits.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a reasonably healthy 66-year-old male. I walk 5 miles a day. I have no knee problems. My doctor says I am walking too much and will wear out my knees. Do you agree? -- M.D. ANSWER: No, I don’t agree at all. I think I understand why your doctor said that: osteoarthritis, the most common arthritis in the knee, used to be considered a wear-and-tear injury, and if that were the case it might make sense to protect your joints by not overdoing it. However, we believe now that osteoarthritis is caused by an injury to the joint, not by regular exercise. More importantly, studies show clearly that people who are very active don’t have higher arthritis rates than sedentary people. Most important of all, people with osteoarthritis who exercise get better, not only in pain and stiffness levels, but also in ability to walk. Exercise is so good for your body, mind and spirit that this persistent myth needs to be corrected. The arthritis booklet discusses rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 301W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: When I was 60, my doctor told me to take a baby aspirin daily to prevent heart attack and stroke. So I did. When I was 70, a new doctor said the risk wasn’t worth the benefit, so I stopped. I heard and read a lot more about the benefits of aspirin. But a friend of mine had a horrific nosebleed that was thought to be from the aspirin. I and a few of my senior friends are confused. Should we or shouldn’t we take aspirin? -- A.H. ANSWER: When you see multiple opinions on a topic in medicine, it usually means there is conflicting evidence, and that certainly is the case with aspirin. The difference of opinion takes place at the highest levels: the United States Food and Drug Administration recommends, in general, against using aspirin to prevent heart attack and stroke in people who have not already had a heart attack or stroke. However, the US Preventive Services Task Force recommends aspirin in general for men age 45-79 and women age 55-79. The USPSTF makes no recommendation about men or women over age 79. Both groups agree that your physician should be helping you make the decision about whether to take aspirin. Aspirin has the risk of causing bleeding, and the bleeding can be more serious than a nosebleed. A bleed inside the stomach or intestines can be life-threatening, and there also is a very small risk of bleeding in the brain. As a physician, I prescribe aspirin for those at increased risk based on multiple factors, and do not prescribe aspirin to people at high risk of a gastrointestinal bleed. This is a judgment call about which physicians may differ. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!
7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

The students also brought in over 150 food items to be donated to the local Avon food pantry to help them fill baskets for Thanksgiving for local families in need. St. Agnes School strives to teach the students how to give back to the community on a local and international level throughout the year. Great job, students! Awesome! something was wrong; and removed such. He’d placed in my mouth both the thermometer and its plastic storage case! I asked him why such a mistake? He laughed and said, “Oops - sorry about that.” I do not consider such health care any joke! I feel it was unprofessional; uncaring; unhygienic and reckless!
There is a unit clerk at [local] hospital who has been sharing patient information out in the community with the general population. The hospital has been notified of this but nothing has been done; this person still continues to keep her job. Perhaps she needs a job somewhere that confidentiality isn’t an issue! Beware of going to the hospital for anything at all as the community may find out what’s going on with you after you’ve left! Health Care is not a joke! I was recently admitted with illness to a nearby hospital. On my first day there, a young male nurse came to my bedside wearing a name tag with his first name and title “R.N.” (Registered Nurse). He took an oral thermometer from his jacket pocket and said, “Got to take your temperature - open your mouth.” At once, I felt
In response to the past few comments I’ve read on the attire of women and men in public places such as church, shopping centers, I would like to applaud and congratulate those who still have their senses to discern something is dreadfully wrong! Well, I have been to a lot of church sales the past few years and been shocked and offended by the books and movies offered for sale at their Church Sales! It is quite evident the church has lost its moral guidelines and is no longer the “light” or “salt” Jesus called us to be. I have seen pure filth offered for sale in area churches, forget about local bookstores which have a buffet of trash to corrupt your heart and mind! Anything for the dollar! If you truly are a Christian let your light shine and don’t be afraid to add the salt!

Some exterior improvements make a lot of sense right now thanks to sharply lower oil prices. That’s because many petroleumbased products, such as asphalt and vinyl, are the core material in these renovations. The costs of these products had soared recently along with the price of oil but have started to drop, making this the best time in a while to replace your aging roof, repave your driveway or redo your vinyl siding.

Your Trendy exercises to rev up workouts Exercising consistently is a great way to get healthy. For those who find their workout routines monotonous, switching up exercises and embracing some of the newer, trendier fitness regimens may be a way to maintain your momentum at the gym. High-intensity workouts High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a concept behind some of today’s most popular exercise programs. HIIT combines cardiovascular and strength-training movements into a concentrated workout designed to keep your heart rate elevated. HIIT workouts blend bouts of intense exercise with either rest or low-intensity activity. These workouts seem to promote faster weight loss than prolonged workouts at moderate paces. While HIIT is functional, it is not best for those who have preexisting orthopedic injuries or serious cardiovascular conditions. But many people enjoy a stronger heart and improved muscle tone from HIIT workouts. Kettlebells These weighted cast-iron workout tools can be an interesting addition to strength-training workouts. But their utility does not stop there. Using kettlebells during any physical activity will increase the amount of fat burned and can provide a full-body workout. Kettlebells come in different weights, and newcomers are urged to start out gradually and build up in weight as they become more familiar and toned. Trampoline cardio For those who want to both shake up their workouts and lift their moods, jumping on a trampoline can do just that. It’s difficult to be in a bad mood when bouncing around like a kid on a trampoline. Trampoline classes are turning up in some upscale
gyms, where each participant has his own individual trampoline. Routines mix in different choreography and small hand weights to promote a fun and effective cardio experience. Water aerobics Swimming isn’t the only thing you can do in a pool. Water workouts are ideal for those with muscle and joint pain because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on these areas, while providing enough resistance for a deep workout. Workouts may begin in chest-deep water and progress to deeper water for added resistance. Some gyms now offer aqua cycling classes that combine water aerobics with spinning. Dance and hip-hop classes ZUMBA® classes have been popular for quite some time. But many health clubs offer additional classes that employ dance to burn calories and tone muscles. Some gyms have developed their own cardio-based dance classes that get people moving to music in a fun way. Routines are fun and fast-moving, which may make them feel less like a workout and more like a social event. Recess classes Adults who want to feel like kids again need only to enroll in a fitness class that borrows activities from the playgrounds of our youth. From walking like a crab to running drills to balance beams, these workouts take school recess and bring it to the health club. Heart health tips no matter the w eather Dress appropriately: Weather is often unpredictable. Therefore, dress in layers so you can remove or add clothing as needed to remain comfortable. Children and older adults are more susceptible to the effects of cold w eather. According to Jersey Shore University M edical Center, w hen temperatures are low your heart w orks harder to keep the body w arm. Dressing w armly can help avoid taxing the heart. The same caution applies w hen the temperature is extremely w arm. It’s easy for the elderly to overheat and become dehydrated. Dress in light clothing and remember to drink plenty of w ater.

Call us: 585-226-8111 General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.
“We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know because they have never deceived us” ~ Samuel Johnson Each year we read nw stories about victims who have been duped by confident men. The same old crooked schemes work on people who should know better but who put an almost childlike trust in total strangers. Johnson speculates that we tend to believe strangers because they have no record of deceit. The people close to us may have “fibbed” to us or misrepresented facts, perhaps only to tease. The stranger’s record is unblemished until we learn to our sorrow that he, too, might lie to us for gain. There are definite advantages in making funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Let us review these with you…no cost or obligation.
