MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks is jailed for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus to a white man, a violation of the city’s racial segregation laws. Parks’ refusal was not merely brought on by her tired feet, as is the popular legend. Local civil-rights leaders had been planning a challenge to Montgomery’s racist bus laws for several months.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Five ways to keep yourself from turning up the thermostat this winter: Put on a sweater; have a nice bowl of soup or stew; wear slippers or thick nonskid socks, grab a comfy blanket; snuggle up with someone special. * “If you bathe in a tub, try rubbing on bath oil before getting in the tub. You will get greater coverage and more moisturizing power from your bath oil. And at this time of year, who doesn’t need that?” -- M.E. in Washington * “Here’s a great way to use Christmas cards from last year: Trace a child’s hand on the back of the pictures. Cut them out and use them to make a wreath for the front door. Or, make small jigsaw puzzles for young children to play with. Any good, detailed artwork on a card front will do. Make squiggly lines in the fashion of a jigsaw puzzle, then cut out. It helps if the cardstock is good and thick.” -- M.M. in Utah * “To keep light bulbs from sticking in the socket, apply petroleum jelly to the base of the bulb before screwing it into the fixture.” -- B.D. in Virginia * Here’s an oldie but a goodie: Add a few drops of water to votive cups before adding a candle. The wax will float on the water, and when the candle burns down, it won’t get stuck in the votive glass.

ELECTRICAL

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE

Never Lose Power Again!

(NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage.

The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. (NAPSI)—The next time you’re firing up the outdoor grill (or indoor grill pan, for that matter), throw on a sweet potato or two. An easy, healthy side dish with a huge wow factor, grilled sweet potatoes are nutrient rich, high in fiber and absolutely delicious. And they go great with burgers, steaks, chops, chicken or pretty much anything off the grill.

1 lb orange- or yellow/white-fleshed sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise into ¾-inch wedges 1 ½ Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt, plus more for sprinkling Heat a grill or grill pan to mediumhigh. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes, oil and salt. Arrange sweet potatoes on the grill or grill pan and cook until lightly charred and tender, 6 to 8 minutes, turning halfway through. Sprinkle with more salt and serve. For more recipes, nutritional information and tips for cooking with California sweetpotatoes, go to www.casweetpotatoes.com.

I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I w ant to think, all the w alks I w ant to take, all the books I w ant to read, and all the friends I w ant to see. - John Burroughs

“In any contest between power and patience, bet on patience.....” ~ W.B Prescott Patience is indeed a virtue. “All things come to he who waits” is an old adage that few will dispute. It’s exciting to watch sheer power in action…the forces of nature, for example, can be awesome. But it is the patient, gentle rain rather than the almighty hurricane that makes things grow. The most powerful tyrants of history have eventually fallen to more patient forces of moderation. And, although few of us will ever wield impressive power, every one of us is capable of being patient…a characteristic everyone can, and should, develop.

Send out a little cheer the year we all can use it most. As 2020 comes to a close, our current climate still keeps us at a distance from one another, leaving a gap FaceTime can’t quite fill. Now, with little other choice, we’ve become reliant on the technology we may have taken for granted or wanted a break from, and perhaps bringing back some nostalgia right in time for the holidays is just what we need.

There’s no better feeling of holiday cheer than opening up a holiday card, and our team at Printing by Penny Lane is here to help! We have an array of cards for the winter months, be it for holidays including Christmas, Hanukkah, or general greetings. Nice Gesture Recently, my 85-year-old wife went to [local business]. In a rainy downpour, she tried to park between two cars, one of which was not quite straight. She scraped the fender of the car. No one was around, so she went shopping. When she came out, some lady said, “I saw you. I saw you hit that car.” Out came [local business] security and a policeman. They exchanged licenses and insurance cards. Later that day, the woman, whose car had been scratched arrived at

Count Your

Blessings

BY STEVE HARRISON

I

t’s that time of year when we give “Thanks” for all that we have. Rather than recount the list of things we surely didn’t need in 2020, we could give thanks for those challenges that may have given us a new reason to be thankful. If we can take a moment to reflect rather than react, we can appreciate this saying: “Storms make trees take deeper roots.”

Recently, in a Saturday Evening Post article, there was an interview with a girl who had taken a very bad fall and had become a quadriplegic. Asked by the interviewer, “Are you thankful?” and she replied, “Oh yes.” She then recounted why she was and how she overcame her circumstances. She counted her blessings. Not once, but twice a day, first in the morning when she awoke and at night before she went to sleep. It was not easy at first because she began dwelling on her injury, but slowly, she

thought of all the good in her life, even life itself. Soon, her attitude began to improve, and her outlook and hopes for a better life changed radically. (Her original prognosis was to be bedridden for the rest of her life.) She went back to school and graduated with a degree in science, then earned her master’s degree, and finally, went to work for the United Spinal Association as director. She also works with Google, Verizon, Microsoft and tech industry leaders, helping design autonomous vehicles and augmented reality for the disabled. What a remarkable story of courage and fortitude! And she attributes so much of her transformation into being thankful for who she is, and the blessings she has. Let’s be sure to count ours.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Shopping local gives your community’s artists and vendors exposure. Small communities are often full of incredibly talented artists who can’t afford shop space until their business takes off, leading them to partner with local businesses to sell their products at a storefront. So when you shop local, you give those craftspeople the exposure and funding they need to grow their business.

Shopping local means you get personalized service and products.

Christmas at Clarissa’s

Good customer service can be hard to find at the big chain stores during the holidays due to retail employees often being stretched too thin in their work schedules. Some of the biggest perks of shopping local are the personalized customer service and the unique, hand-crafted items you come across.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The ancient Romans used swan fat or donkey milk to soften wrinkles, while sores and freckles were treated with the ashes of snails. * Eskimos use refrigerators to stop their food from freezing. * Disney’s musical fantasy comedy “The Princess and the Frog” led to an unexpected salmonella outbreak in the United States. More than 50 children were hospitalized after the film’s release when they attempted to free handsome princes with a kiss from what turned out to be perfectly ordinary, definitely non-prince frogs. * Redheads produce more vitamin D than other hair colors.

DID YOU KNOW? As holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, retailers who use apps and mobile responsive websites to reach more customers may benefit by making a concerted effort to reach older shoppers. According to Nielsen’s Mobile Measurement, 26 percent of the more than 100 million mobile shoppers are 55 and older, while an additional 40 percent are between the ages of 25 and 44. Those figures might surprise some retailers who are quick to associate mobile shopping with digital-native Millennials. Nielsen’s Fourth-Quarter 2014 Mobile Multicultural Insights report even noted that Hispanics are more inclined to shop via mobile than non-Hispanic, white smartphone owners. Retailers may also be interested to know that more and more shoppers are turning to apps instead of websites to do their shopping. Between the fourth quarter of 2013 and the fourth quarter of 2014, Nielsen reports that 101.4 million smartphone users accessed a shopping app. By the fourth quarter of 2015, that figure had risen to 109.9 million users.

THE PERFECT TREE! I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. ~Charles Dickens

Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don’t cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree.

There are close to half a billion Real Christmas Trees currently growing on Christmas Tree farms in the U.S. alone, all planted by farmers.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 28, 1582, William Shakespeare, 18, and Anne Hathaway, 26, pay a 40-pound bond for their marriage license in Stratford-upon-Avon. Six months later, Anne gives birth to their daughter, Susanna, and two years later, to twins. * On Nov. 27, 1868, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer leads an early-morning attack on a band of Cheyenne in Oklahoma. Custer did not attempt to identify the group of Cheyenne, or to make even a cursory reconnaissance. Had he done so, he would have discovered that they were peaceful people and the village was on reservation soil. * On Nov. 26, 1922, in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, British archaeologists become the first souls to enter King Tutankhamen’s tomb in more than 3,000 years. Inside were several thousand priceless objects, including a gold coffin containing the mummy of the teenage king.

As the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, it’s imperative that people everywhere take every step necessary to protect themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that a flu vaccine will not protect people against COVID-19. However, flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of illness related to the flu. Those illnesses weaken people’s immune systems, making them more vulnerable to other viruses, including COVID-19. Flu vaccines have also been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization. That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their flu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources. Many people may be concerned about going out and getting a flu shot in 2020. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health and the health of your family.

Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

IS CHARCOAL A NO GO? Charcoal is a trend that seems to be hitting every category of beauty, from face masks to foot scrubs. But does it really make a difference in your toothpaste? Activated charcoal is made from substances like wood and coconut shells, and although it can be found in almost every brand of toothpaste, there is no reliable evidence that it can remove stains beneath the enamel of your teeth. Its rough texture does help remove surface stains, but it is aggressively abrasive for a product that is supposed to be used twice a day. It may actually wear down your enamel, making your teeth more vulnerable to stains and causing them to appear yellow.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Can They Give Gifts to Their Doctor? --DEAR DR. ROACH: We are very fond of our family doctor. I was in to see him the other day, and it came up in conversation that he was going to be getting married. We would like to acknowledge this event in his life with either a lovely card or a small gift. I know the old-school way of thinking is to never do things that are so personal when it comes to your physician. Do you think that still holds true today? -- N.W. ANSWER: Physicians are human beings, and a thoughtful card is always appreciated. Gifts can sometimes be OK, but the American Medical Association has some guidelines for physicians on accepting gifts. I agree with them and you might find them helpful: • Be sensitive to the size of the gift: Inappropriately large gifts should not be accepted. • Do not let a gift influence patient care. • Decline a gift that would present an emotional or financial hardship to the patient’s family. • Consider suggesting a charitable contribution in lieu of a gift. I would add that sometimes rejecting a gift can be hurtful, and if accepting a gift conforms to the guidelines, I generally accept it with thanks. ***

DR. ROACH WRITES: A recent column on easy bruising in older adults prompted several readers to recommend specialized makeup products to cover the discolored areas. That is not something I had considered, and I appreciate the recommendation. Another reader recommended dry skin brushing, but I could not find good evidence that this helps with skin discoloration.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER As the seasons change, motorists must take steps to safeguard their vehicles, especially when the season changes from fall to winter. Each winter, many vehicles are subjected to sub-zero temperatures, snowfall and icy roads, and such conditions can take their toll on vehicles over time. Taking steps to prepare vehicles for winter weather is a vital step that can make cars and trucks safer for drivers and their passengers.

Pets are a big part of people’s lives. They bring joy to young and old alike. With the young, they play and keep the kids out of trouble. For the old they bring a smile to their face, or pep them up. For the sick, they make people feel better and even improve how people heal and remember things long past. With the pandemic going on for the past 8 months or so, a lot of people have had to work from home or stay out of the limeight of the freedom of going out in the world as we have in the past. As a senior citizen I had a head start on this social distancing. Others had it forced upon them. If you have a pet, your pet becomes more responsive to having people around them 24/7. They can become depressed once things can go back to what we use to call normal. This can also be the case on the human end when a person losses a pet that was with them 24/7 for many years. The pet is more than a pet and more of a family member. The loss can be as bad as losing a family member with 2 legs. The pet (in my case a little Pomeranian that was with me for 17 years) was there without asking for more than a little love and kindness. In return they give you unconditional love and respect. You go out for a few minutes or hour, and when you come back you are greeted as if you just got home from being gone for a week. So you need to remember, when the time comes to leave the house for half the day for work or whatever is part of your plate, you need to think of your pet and what will go through their minds. Start by leading up to time spent away. When you leave the house, go out in the yard or go for a ride for small periods so the pet learns you will be coming back. If you know someone who losses a pet, show them some compassion. Give them some kind words; it will help them in their grieving, even more so if the are older.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Pets Must Adapt to Winter Weather --Q: My springy little mutt, “Sandy,” just loves winter! Whenever it snows, she runs right outside to play. We had an early snowstorm just before Halloween, and I let her out to play. When she came back in after about an hour, she was whimpering and limping. I didn’t see any cuts on her paws, but she was shivering quite a bit. I wrapped her in a towel and held her on my lap for a while. I guessing she got cold and scared, but that has never happened to her before. She usually stays outside for at least an hour and I have to call her back in. -- Daryl J., Leominster, Massachusetts A: You did the right thing by checking Sandy as she came inside and warming her up. If she doesn’t display any unusual behavior going forward, then your first guess is correct, that she got mild hypothermia from being out in the snow. Pets need to acclimate to changing temperatures in the fall and winter. A cold snap in the fall can feel more bitter than colder but steady winter temperatures. Other factors can also put a dog at risk for hypothermia. Make sure that Sandy always has water in her bowl, and that water is available during her outside romps, as hydration helps to maintain body temperature. Excessively wet or snowy conditions can speed heat loss. Providing a sheltered spot outdoors will give Sandy a place to take breaks and dry out. A cold injury can take longer to recover from than we realize. For now, limit Sandy’s time outside in the cold to about 30 minutes, and check on her every 10 minutes. If she is shivering or whimpering, bring her inside. And if you have continuing concerns, don’t hesitate to contact the veterinarian.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Using the Internet to Enrich Our Lives With most of us spending most of our days at home, it’s time for us to take advantage of the internet. Here are some resources that can enrich our lives. Inquire at the local senior center about any exercise classes online. Some classes will be live on Zoom and others will be videos that the instructors record and post on the center’s website. If they’re not hosting any classes, search online for “seniors exercise at home” and look for some that are produced by other senior centers. Virtual art classes can open up new areas of interest and reveal talents you didn’t know you had. Better yet, if you’re a beginner or are exploring a new art medium, look for videos that you can review over and over. Look online for free art classes online for seniors. Exercise and art aren’t the only free classes you’ll find online. Yoga and tai chi, sewing, baking and cake decorating, creative writing, a new language -- if it can be done online, there’s a class for it somewhere. And don’t forget Class Central (www.classcentral.com). Check the website for a list of MOOCS (massive open online courses). There 15,000 different free and low-cost classes in its searchable database from colleges and universities around the world. Imagine taking a philosophy course from the University of Edinburgh or Introduction to Classical Music via Yale University. (I put art history into its search box and got back 165 results.) Read the details for any class you’re considering. It will tell you if the class is self-paced, whether it’s free to audit, the class level and how much time per week you can expect to spend on the work, as well as reviews from other students. If you’re unsure of your internet skills, search for “internet basics for seniors” on Google.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS It’s important to optimize a résumé for digital scanning, which has become a major component of the employment sector. This includes using the correct keywords and phrasing so that your résumé will get “flagged.” Take your cue from the job advertisements themselves and mimic the verbiage used. Replace the lingo accordingly, tailoring it to each job you apply for. Also, consult the “about us” area of a prospective employer’s website. This area may offer clues about buzz words for the industry.

Applications should be submitted no later than December 7,2020.
