There are many challenges facing small towns. We need to work on these concerns together, plus internet and public water for all, along with trying to manage the increase in our taxes. A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire.

DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

Autumn marks the time to transition from the hot days of summer to the chilly w eather of w inter. As people remove sw eaters and long pants from storage, cleaning up their yards also may be on their minds. Fall is a season of beautiful foliage, but once that magical color show is over, thousands of leaves have fallen to the ground, necessitating a few w eekends’ w orth of yard w ork. Some homeow ners may be on the lookout for environmentally friendly w ays to handle autumn yard w ork, and thankfully there are plenty of eco-friendly w ays to tackle such tasks.

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

A GUIDE TO BUYING PRE-OWNED VEHICLES
RV BUYERS’ GUIDE Usage frequency: When considering an RV, think about how often it will be used and where it will be stored when not in use. Garage storage may be challenging on a larger rig, and some housing communities frown upon parking RVs in driveways. This may affect the size you choose as well as the features you need, according to KOA, the RV camp site leader.
AUTO SECTION
Exercise caution with private sellers. Buying from a private seller is a bit riskier than utilizing a dealership. That’s because the due diligence falls on you as the buyer. Ask for a vehicle history report (commonly known as the CARFAX®) for any vehicle you’re considering, even if it means paying for the report. The report will list any accidents and other red flags. If a seller refuses to offer the report, pass on the deal.

Here’s a Tip
* Mail service is a wonderful thing. Order what you wanand it’s in your mailbox or on your doorstep tomorrow. From efficiency to penny pinching, you can use the mail order to help out in numerous ways. Or, use it to bring a smile to someone’s face: Keep a stack of stamped postcards with you. Jot a note and mail one off whenever the mood strikes. I almost guarantee a great response from the recipient! Who doesn’t love real snail mail? -- JoAnn * To save on prescription costs, ask if your health insurance participates in a mail order service where you can get three months of a drug for a discounted cost. Mine costs less for three months than it does for one month in my local drugstore, and I don’t even have to go pick it up. -- B.W. in Virginia * One of the greatest assets in our communities is the public library, and mine has just added a new service that I’m over the moon about: delivery! I can search the card catalog from home and have the books I want delivered right to my house. It’s so convenient. -- J.H. in Florida

P U T YO U R M O N E Y W H E R E YO U R H E A RT I S ! POISON PREVENTION TIPS Use original containers. It’s tempting to transfer certain cleaning products or chemicals to other bottles or jars for ease of use, but this can be dangerous. People in the home may mistakenly ingest something if it is transferred to a beverage container or something typically used for food storage. Plus, should ingestion occur, you will no longer have the safety label in place. That means you won’t have immediate access to safety protocols that can save lives.
STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS Employ the buddy system. When stringing lights, always work with at least one other person. This makes it safe for homeowners who must climb ladders to string lights on especially tall trees and/or on their home exteriors. Tis the Season ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Humbled with Gratitude I was humbled today with gratitude. Shopping is complex with nerve pain and numbness, limiting me to one to two items I can carry close enough to my chest to see the floor below. Surprisingly, a “Katrina” added my chocolates to her bill, and the check-out clerk helped me express this thanks! Thank you for voting Thank you to everyone who gets out and votes on Election Day, Tuesday, November 7, 2023. By voting you get to make sure your vote is counted, and also helps stop voting fraud. This prevents others from using your Absentee Ballot. And, the more bonafide votes cast, the less effect ballot harvesting has on our elections. Generous Donation To Livingston County residents ... Thank you for your very generous donations in gathering warm clothes for migrant children. Your overwhelming response to this need shows your love of the strangers among us. May God bless all who give and those who receive.

SHARE WITH US Drivers If you want to drive 10 mph under the speed limit that’s fine. If you look in your mirror and see multiple vehicles lined up behind you why can’t you at least move a bit to let some by? You may have all the time in the world but others don’t! Headlights From the Other Side New cars have LED headlights. I didn’t choose LEDs; the car came this way. A recent rant complained about being blinded by bright headlights. I am constantly flashed by other cars as though I have my brights on. I have two options to this flashing. One: do nothing and look like a jerk. Two: flash my brights and let them face a much brighter light, thereby demonstrating that what the other driver thought was bright wasn’t even close. The solution for drivers bothered by lights hasn’t changed. If a car is approaching, fix your gaze on the painted line along the shoulder on the right side of your car until the bright lights pass. Staring directly at any headlights and getting angry is a silly move. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Banana Trees Growing in Brockport? You Bet! Former Television Executive Goes Bananas in Brockport! BY R AY T R I M , A K A T I K I R AY
A
Rochester native, I embarked on a fascinating 30 year adventure when I left home and moved to Los Angeles, CA where I worked my way up from casting associate on TV shows like Charles In Charge and Quantum Leap to negotiating contracts at NBC Universal for some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and on hit shows, such as Will & Grace and The Office. After three decades working in the entertainment industry, I moved from LA farther east to Palm Springs, CA where I began restoration of my new home, a mid-century marvel in an iconic, architecturally significant neighborhood. Always a supporter of the arts, I also lent my talents to numerous cultural interests in the Palm Springs area, including Modernism Week, as well as the Palm Springs Art Museum. These civic efforts did not go unnoticed, and soon I accepted the mayor’s appointment to serve as City Commissioner, administrating, among other things, Village Fest, one of the area’s most popular and highly attended weekly arts & cultural events. During my time on the west coast, I was fortunate to travel to the Hawaiian Islands on several occasions, training and participating in the Honolulu Marathon. While in Hawaii, I developed a deep appreciation for the splendor of the lush and tropical island landscape. This inspiration, along with the climate in Palm Springs, presented a variety of options for another of my passions: gardening and landscaping, and soon my desert retreat bloomed with an assortment of palm trees, yucca, plumeria, and other desert-scape plants and trees. However, fate brought change once again, this time prompting a return to New York. About a decade ago, Rochester beckoned me home when a routine medical procedure left my elderly mother with ongoing health Ray Trim challenges requiring my attention. Weighing family obligations, I decided to leave my desert paradise behind and move back to take care of my mother. I said goodbye to three decades of sunshine and palm trees and said hello again to the changing seasons and winter snow. Missing the tropical/desert landscape and gardens, I stumbled upon a store in Rochester selling a “hardy banana tree (perennial),” a Musa Basjoo. I purchased two plants and set out on a mission to successfully grow them and see them through the severe Upstate New York winters and return in the next growing season. Of course, the growing season in this region is too short to produce fruit on these plants, but the tropical effect on their enormous leaf-span is spectacular. Once established, Musa Basjoo can grow an amazing two feet per week, typically growing to 6-9 feet tall when potted indoors or 15 feet when planted outside.
A local garden center purchased some of my pups last year. Various entrepreneurs have expressed interest in buying banana leaves, which are used in cooking, religious ceremonies, and Latin and Asian recipes, as well as for table liners and decorations for special catered events. I recently hosted a free public event for local residents who took a mini tour of my banana garden, grown in my postage-stamp yard in the Village of Brockport. Although unusual recent weather patterns delayed the growing season this year, my crop still managed to soar to a height of 8-10 feet, prompting some to comment that my small garden paradise looks like a scene from Jurassic Park, making me, with my miniplantation, Brockport’s “top banana!” Fun fact: The banana is not a true tree; it is a giant herbaceous plant. Botanically, this means that none of its parts ever become woody like true trees. The main stem of the banana plant is a large rhizome that grows horizontally underground. The shoots that we think of as “trees” grow upward from this underground stem.
Four years later, with a lot of care and a few mishaps, my two banana trees multiplied to twenty, as the original plants produced “pups” (new growth shoots) I carefully separated from the main plant and transplanted to other garden locations! Over time, I have gifted many pups to friends and family locally and across the country.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has been diagnosed with Paget’s disease. I would like to know more about it; this is the first time I have ever heard of it. I would like to know the treatments and how much damage affects the bones. He is 76, had prostate cancer and underwent radiation treatment. -- C.W. ANSWER: Paget’s disease of the bone is a common disease in people of European ancestry, with a lifetime prevalence of approximately 3%, although it remains undiagnosed in many. The cause of the disease appears to be a defect in bone reabsorption by the osteoclast, a specialized cell that normally helps maintain bone health. Paget’s disease is not a cancer. It is normally diagnosed over the age of 55. Most cases of Paget’s disease are asymptomatic; however, without treatment, some people will develop arthritis, pain, deformities and fractures. The bone deformities may lead to nerve compression and, in the case of the tiny bones in the ear, hearing loss. X-rays and a high alkaline phosphatase (ALP) blood test are suggestive of the diagnosis. A bone scan is recommended to see the extent of damage from the disease. Fortunately, highly effective treatments are available. Bisphosphonate drugs, the same drugs that are used to treat many people with osteoporosis, are very effective. A single treatment with zoledronic acid is effective at stopping (not reversing) the progression of the disease, and fewer than 20% of people will need a second dose. Diagnosing and treating early are ideal. I don’t think his prostate cancer or radiation treatment has anything to do with his diagnosis of Paget’s. ***

WHAT THE NUTRIENTS FOUND IN MANY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES DO FOR YOUR BODY Magnesium: The Mayo Clinic reports that magnesium supports muscle and nerve function and energy production. Individuals with chronically low levels of magnesium could be at increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. The NIH notes that magnesium is widely distributed in plants. That means it can be found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, edamame, black beans, bananas, and broccoli. Magnesium levels vary significantly in these foods, so anyone concerned about magnesium deficiency can speak with their physicians about the best and healthiest ways to include more in their diets.
Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH EXTRACTIONS We expect to have our adult teeth for life, but sometimes a tooth extraction is necessary. Reasons include damage or decay that’s too advanced to repair, crowding, infection, and loose teeth caused by periodontal disease. A dentist or oral surgeon will perform the extraction. You’ll receive injections of local anesthetic to numb the area, although sometimes general anesthesia is used instead. If the tooth is impacted, often the case with wisdom teeth, the dentist will need to remove the gum and bone tissue around the tooth before loosening it from the jawbone to remove it. A tooth that’s difficult to remove may be extracted in pieces. Dissolving stiches may be used to close the gum over the extraction area. With our focus on prevention and education, we dedicate ourselves to keeping our patients out of the dental
chair for tooth extractions and other threats to their oral health. We provide the highest quality oral care services so that you’ll spend less time in treatment and more time enjoying your healthy smile. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL offers complete general dental care including repair of damage caused by trauma or neglect, periodic cleanings, and full mouth reconstruction. We also provide cosmetic dentistry for the sunniest smiles possible. Call us, 585.343.4246, for an appointment at 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. People with certain conditions like liver disease, immune system disorders, and some heart conditions will require antibiotics before an extraction to prevent an oral infection from spreading.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
LAWN & LANDSCAPING TURN YOUR YARD INTO A VACATION-WORTHY OASIS Create living privacy: Living in close proximity to neighbors may make privacy harder to come by. Wood or vinyl fences, however effective, may not provide the all-natural look many people desire. Vertical gardening, which trains easy-care vines like English ivy, Clematis or various climbing roses to grow on trellis or fencing adds greenery and privacy. Hedges and fast-growing shrubs also can be used for natural barriers.

TOOLS OF THE HOME RENOVATOR’S TRADE Home renovation projects can be both exciting and tricky. Do-ityourselfers are inspired by designs showcased in magazines, websites and their own communities. When DIY enthusiasts see a design they like, it’s understandable that they may want to emulate these looks at home. Remodeling is one of the larger DIY undertakings, and it goes beyond simple carpentry. Considering demolition, reconstruction, electrical, plumbing, and masonry work may be part of the DIY package, homeowners who are thinking about renovations must first stock up on the tools and other supplies of the trade. Having the right tools can mean the difference between a job well done and a job that needs to be redone.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Basic Training DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You often mention that owners should spend time with their dogs in basic obedience training. What are “the basics” exactly? -- Ferris T., Huntington, N.Y. A: While the specifics of basic obedience training for dogs are better detailed through books or by professional trainers, I can list these training requirements here. • Housetraining: The most basic and most important to you and your dog’s peace of mind. Teaching a new dog where and when to eliminate, and training yourself to keep a proper schedule, is a crucial initial step. • Heel: Your dog should walk calmly alongside you, and not struggle against the leash, pull you down the street or chase after birds, cars or other dogs. • Sit: A well-trained dog will sit on command. When training on the leash, have the dog sit on your left side. • Down: The dog should lie down (on his belly, paws forward) on command. • Stay: In the “sit” or “down” position, the dog should not move until you release him with a verbal command. • Come: At your command, the dog should come to you, or respond to further directional commands (such as tugging the leash right or left to signal a turn). That’s essentially it: five basic commands and housetraining. It doesn’t sound like much, but teaching a dog of any age these skills will take at least several weeks, if not months. And they must be taught correctly: no hitting or yelling, maintaining dominance over the dog. Training books provide many more details on effective ways to do this, while a professional trainer can demonstrate additional effective techniques to ease the basic training process. Remember that basic obedience training doesn’t stop once these skills have been learned. Dogs need regular reinforcement, even if it’s just a five-minute review during their daily walks.
