* “I feel the following is the best way to remove lint from the trap on my dryer. After completion of the drying cycle, take the used Bounce dryer sheet and swipe the screen. Then throw it into the wastebasket located next to the dryer. For loads not using Bounce, take a used one from the wastebasket and use. This puts the Bounce sheet through a complete clothes-drying cycle.” -- G.B. from Minnesota GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Shopping local helps grow your community's economy. According to the American Independent Business Alliance (AIBA), when you shop local, approximately 48% of the cost of your purchase is recirculated back into the local economy. When you shop at a chain store, that number drops to only 14%. Instead of taking your hard-earned dollars to a billion-dollar chain store, think about how beneficial it would be to invest them in your local economy and help support a small business owner's family. Every dollar helps, especially around the holidays.

SERVE POTATO PANCAKES FOR HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS Serves 12 3 large potatoes, peeled and shredded 1 small onion, shredded 3 large eggs 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, or as needed 1/2 cup vegetable oil Toppings: Sriracha sauce Vegan coconut yogurt

Hi, I am Claude Hopper. At the end of July I went to my current home as a foster through Headed For Furever. When my human Papa met me, that was it. I was not going anywhere. I now live with 3 cat sisters and my humans. My favorite thing to do is to go for stroller rides and walking outside.

1. Place the potatoes and onion into a bowl, and stir in eggs, salt and flour as needed to make the mixture hold together. With wet hands, scoop up about 1/3 cup of the mixture per patty, and form into flat round or oval shapes. 2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it shimmers, and gently place the patties into the hot oil. Fry until the bottoms are golden brown and crisp, 5 to 8 minutes, then flip with a spatula and fry the other side until golden. 3. Line a colander or strainer with 2 paper towels, and drain the cooked latkes in the colander. Serve hot. AUTOMOTIVE

REASONS TO PLANT A TREE There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer. North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.

Make things easy for customers. Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touchless payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contactless payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2022

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Social Security Benefit for 2023 It’s official: Our Social Security increase for 2023 will be 8.7%. They say it’s the largest increase in 40 years. For the average senior, that’s going to mean a $146 monthly increase. Plus we’re getting a small “rebate” on that massive Medicare Part B increase we faced last year when the cost went to $170.10 to pay for Aduhelm, an Alzheimer’s disease drug that was said to cost $56,000 per year. (After facing criticism, manufacturers had to cut the cost in half, down to $28,200.) We’ll now save $5.20 on our Part B premium, with the average monthly deduction being $164.90. The Part B annual deductible will drop to $226, a $7 savings. What’s disturbing is that only a few months ago the financial gurus were expecting we’d receive a 10.2% increase on Social Security, based on all the high prices we’ve been seeing this year and will likely see into 2023. Instead, they’ve lowered that to the 8.7% ... while prices have continued to rise. The problem is how those annual increases are calculated. They use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners And Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which calculates the prices of goods and services for things those urban workers care about: clothing, education, electronics and so on. That CPI-W covers 29% of the population. Instead, they should use the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E), which focuses on goods and services that seniors spend money on: medical, drugs, food, housing and so on. The next time you call your senators and representatives, be sure to ask why the Elderly index isn’t being used. After all, they’ve been thinking about it since the 1980s. Meanwhile, don’t let the Medicare open enrollment period pass you by. Until Dec. 7 you have the option to make changes to your original Medicare Advantage plan, supplemental plan and prescription drug plan.

* Some adult details made it into the final cut of the PG-rated film “The Santa Clause.” In one scene, Tim Allen’s character jokes that his wife’s number is “1-800-SPANK ME.” It turned out, however, that was a real line that you could call and hear some naughty stuff -- as many overly curious children found out. The line was removed from future releases of the film. * Winston Churchill had a doctor’s note permitting him to drink “unlimited” amounts of alcohol while visiting the U.S. * Speaking of beverages, in 16th-century Turkey, a woman could initiate a divorce if her husband didn’t pour coffee for her.

Honoring our Community’s Military Veterans Display at East Bloomfield Historical Society BY K A I T L I N D O N N A N

W

alking along the display case and exhibits of the East Bloomfield Historical Society places its visitors back in time, with a focus on local individuals and their hand in history. Dating back to World War II, the displays feature uniforms, photos, and more, allowing visitors to work their way through the years and various conflicts local servicemen and women were involved in, just in time for Veterans Day. “We have uniforms, flags, photos, a WAV uniform, and more,” said Judi Stewart, a historian at the East Bloomfield Historical Society. “We also have two sealed trunks and are opening them some 60 years later to a treasure trove of artifacts.” Cheryl Walters, an East Bloomfield History Society Trustee, is spearheading the exhibit, and through a series of interviews and compiling biographies of military experience, stories will put visitors in Pearl Harbor on boats, sitting in Hyde Park with Winston Churchill, and even delve into moments in Vietnam. “When you can put their biographies with the uniforms of individual people, suddenly visitors can really see what their family members did, and that is such a rich, wonderful experience,” Stewart said. “Cheryl has been in contact with families who have members who fought in or went to war. People really want their family members represented here.”

Another artifact recently acquired by the East Bloomfield History Society is an unpublished book entitled A Promise Kept, written by Sgt. Wayne Raulerson and his niece, Dr. Melissa Call, by Sgt. Henry “Hank” Trickey. Written about the Battle of Hamburger Hill in Vietnam from May 10th-20th, 1969, A Promise Kept documents a platoon’s experience in combat and a promise that whoever survived would visit their fallen brothers’ graves. Sgt. Raulerson did just that, seeking out his camrades’ families and leaving a quarter on each of his fallen brothers’ headstones. “A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier’s family know someone stopped by to pay their respects,” said Stewart. “If you leave a penny, it means you visited. A nickel means you trained at boot camp together and a dime means you served together. A quarter is significant because it means you were there when that solider was killed.” A Promise Kept tells the story of soldiers killed in action or MIA, sharing their last words and giving them closure. Sgt. Raulerson wrote his story at the behest of his niece and, through Sgt. Trickey, donated a copy of his book to the East Bloomfield Historical Society in honor of Army Specialist Four Joseph Williams of West Bloomfield, NY, who was killed in action at Hamburger Hill on May 18, 1969.

Sgt. Trickey, a Bloomfield native and good friend of Sgt. Raulerson, is a former member of the 101st Airborne Division, the “Screaming Eagles”, and Second Battalion-502nd Infantry and was stationed in the A Shau Valley during the Vietnam War. “I remember when the Vietnam War was taking place,” said Stewart. “The conflicts we’ve had tend to feel far away and abstract, but physically being able to see what took place in the past connects it more with reality. The exhibit tells a story, and that is important.” Today, many veterans still do not wish to discuss their experiences in combat and what they’ve endured. “We still have people coming back without the support they need. We do not always pay tribute to these people and thank them like we should.” “We have so many Veterans who have never talked about their experiences with their family members,” Walters said. “We need to reach out to them, and the younger generation needs to know what happened. More people thank Veterans now than they did when they came back from Vietnam.” Walters also states people need to learn more about all service members involved. “We do not know a lot about the women in service; they (and medics) were right out there in the combat area with the soldiers. They saved numerous lives. What they did was not for nothing.” “Honoring our Community’s Military” will run between now and Veterans Day, showcasing over 40 uniforms from WWII to present, over 70 biographies of community soldiers, military artifacts including service medals, helmets, field and personal gear, letters to home, photographs, and other memorabilia. The East Bloomfield Historical Society will be hosting a luncheon on November 10th for all local Veterans free of charge. Sgt. Henry “Hank” Trickey will also host a speech at the Bloomfield Central School auditorium on November 10th at 7:00pm with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend. WHAT IS A GUM STIMULATOR?

Salmon Orthodontics Beautiful smiles enhance self-confidence & self-esteem.

A gum stimulator is a dental tool that can be used at home to strengthen the gums by massaging and stimulating them. The tool has a pointed rubber or silicone tip at the top of a curved metal arm, which is designed to reach hard-to-clean spaces. It is used to massage the gums at the gumline in order to increase blood flow to those areas. This can help heal or prevent gum infections and disease by allowing more oxygen to reach the gum tissues. A gum stimulator can also be used to remove plaque and food debris from underneath the gumline. They additionally work well for cleaning around teeth in people who have large gaps between teeth or missing teeth.

Taking a Tetanus Vaccine With an Allergy Requires Careful Monitoring ---

Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

Accepting New Patients.

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was told by my doctor that I need a tetanus booster shot, but when I was 17, I cut my foot and needed stitches. I was told then that I was allergic to the tetanus shot, so they gave me penicillin instead. Of course, that was a long time ago, since I’m now 81 years old. How could they have determined I was allergic to the shot, and is that even reliable? Can I be tested now? Or do I even need to be tested? -- M.N. ANSWER: Reactions to vaccines are common, but they were much more common 64 years ago, when the purity of vaccines was far less than what it is now. One reaction that was common in the 1950s is called an Arthus reaction, which causes painful swelling at the injection site within a few hours -- the worst swelling usually occuring around 24 hours later, and then slowly decreasing. You are unlikely to get that type of allergic reaction because of better vaccines, and because it has been so many years since you’ve taken the vaccine. Very few people get anaphylactic reactions. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening condition, which often starts with skin symptoms such as hives or swelling; respiratory symptoms such as nasal congestion, discharge or the sensation of the throat closing; gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain; and cardiovascular symptoms such as dizziness and fainting. Any history of anaphylaxis prevents you from getting the same trigger (vaccine or medication) again, if it can be helped. Only a careful history of your symptoms at the time of the allergic reaction you had can provide an answer on which type of reaction it was. Blood testing for allergic reactions is not 100% reliable. If you haven’t had a tetanus vaccine in over 60 years, the decision to get one now really is a judgment call based on your likelihood of exposures. If you do a lot of gardening or hiking, it may be worthwhile to give you a vaccine with careful monitoring. If you were to develop a tetanus-prone wound, such as a deep wound that comes into contact with soil or manure, you would be recommended tetanus immunoglobulin as well as a tetanus vaccine. Penicillin alone is not effective in preventing tetanus: Meticulous wound cleaning is critical, in addition to the shots.

Magnesium: The Mayo Clinic reports that magnesium supports muscle and nerve function and energy production. Individuals with chronically low levels of magnesium could be at increased risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis. The NIH notes that magnesium is widely distributed in plants. That means it can be found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, edamame, black beans, bananas, and broccoli. Magnesium levels vary significantly in these foods, so anyone concerned about magnesium deficiency can speak with their physicians about the best and healthiest ways to include more in their diets.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increase age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

DEAR JIMMY: Kudos to you and your friend for caring for the lost cat and trying to get it back to the owner! The first thing to do is to contact nearby shelters and veterinarian’s offices and tell them that you’ve found a lost cat but cannot contact the owner. They may have you bring in the cat to scan for a microchip -- the best way to identify pets and reunite them with their owners when a collar and tag are lost. Or they may ask for a description and have you email a photo of the cat so they can put up a “found” flyer in their lobby. Chances are, if the owner has already put up flyers, they have probably been checking with shelters regularly to see if their cat has been reported found or has turned up there.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor. HOMETOWN PHOTOS

S E V RA Thank You I just want to thank the sweet little girl who presented me with a delicious box of cookies and beautiful card in the Wegman’s parking lot on Rte 31. That was such a surprise and genuine act of love. It was such a perfect gift as our car wouldn’t start and I was experiencing a bit of nausea from the chemo I have been receiving. Not only did she give me the lovely box of cookies, but she and her mother found someone who could help us get our car started. I hope they read this because it meant so very much to me. I was kind of in shock at the time and didn’t get to express how much it meant. I just went home and cried! There are many good people in this world and that sweet little girl and her mom are a shining example of God’s love. Thank you for renewing my faith. I will definitely pass on the love you gave me. Trunk or treat at the Elks A shout out to the Elks Lodge #24! In this day and age when we adults have to teach our children to be wary of others, you showed up big time! You did an awesome job for the kids on Saturday, Oct.22. Each car, with their thought out decorations and friendly greetings from the adults, made my grandchildren feel so welcome! You were so in the spirit of what Halloween is about; the children! Thank you! What have I missed I grew up many years ago, married and raised a family. I taught my children to love God, treat people with kindness and respect and not to judge others because you do not walk in their shoes, even if you disagree with their opinions. I rode behind a car with a bumper sticker which stated, “I vote my faith ----- ----“. What have I missed in all these years? What religion teaches ridiculing others who disagree with your opinion? Verbally or physically attacking others? And that infidelity is OK? What have I missed?

Thank you, Officer I recently went to Krown Undercoating in East Rochester to have my car undercoated. I met a younger man waiting for work on his truck in the lounge room. He commented on my Navy veteran hat and thanked me for my service. I asked him where he worked and he said he worked for the city of Rochester. I asked if it was inside or outside work. He said he was a cop and he was going in for the afternoon shift. After further discussions he said that he worked in the Clinton Ave. area of Rochester. After a few minutes, he was called away because his truck was finished. A few minutes later I was also called to get my car. When I got to the front desk they said that the last gentleman paid my $150 bill. I was blown away because I am used to paying my own way. I ended up paying it forward for another person having a truck undercoated. I really appreciated this very kind gesture from this officer and thought that it was worthy of a public thank you because police are getting a lot of negative publicity. A shout out! My local village did a trunk or treat for the first time this year and I heard it was pretty successful. I love hearing all the positivity coming from small town's activities and upgrades!

Ignoring a 4 way stop sign On the morning of Oct. 25 at 6:50 am I left my parked car across from my cousin’s house to babysit. Before I could get across the road, a car came to the stop sign, never stopped, sped up around the corner and nearly hit me. He quickly veered around me but was too close for comfort and never slowed down.

HOW TO BUILD A STRONG PROFESSIONAL NETWORK Ask around. Some individuals may hesitate to seek networking advice out of fear of appearing opportunistic. But successful professionals understand the need to network, so your colleagues will likely be glad to offer referrals if they’re in a position to do so. When receiving a referral, ask if you can use the person’s name, which should help you establish a connection during the introductory process. Resist the idea that using a colleague’s name when meeting a professional you hope to work with is something sinister, as the name will only help you with the introduction. Once the introduction has been made, it’s up to you to do the rest. OATKA EDITION

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way.

DID YOU KNOW ? The origins of Veterans Day can be traced to the ending of World War I nearly a century ago. Know n at the time as “ The Great War,” World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919 w ith the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in France. But the fighting had actually ended seven months earlier w hen an armistice betw een the Allies and Germany w ent into effect on November 11, 1918. The follow ing November United States President Woodrow W ilson declared November 11 “ Armistice Day” in honor of the cessation of the hostilities, and the day became a federal holiday in 1938. That act w as amended in 1954 after veterans service organizations, in recognition of the efforts of soldiers w ho fought in World War II, asked that the day be renamed “ Veterans Day” so it honored all soldiers and not just those w ho fought in World War I.
