PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

ppy Jumping puppy sing is embarassing his owner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time someone comes to visit or says hello at the park, my puppy, Jake, jumps up and tries to lick their face. It’s embarrassing, and I don’t know how to stop it. Can you help? -- Sean in Providence, Rhode Island DEAR SEAN: Jumping up is a common problem for dog owners (for dogs, not so much; they love it). So much so that it’s one of the first things a trainer addresses with an owner. What you’ll need to do is to improve Jake’s overall response to commands as well as train him not to jump on people. Here’s how you do it, step by step: 1. Train the “sit,” “stay” and “come here” commands every day, at home and at the park. Teach him to walk on the leash calmly at your side. 2. Work with a companion who will ring the doorbell from outside, while you command Jake to sit after the bell sounds. 3. Put Jake on a leash. Answer the door to the companion; when Jake tries to jump up, tug the leash once and command him to sit. Remember to use positive reinforcement during training -- lots of praise, with a treat when he follows a command correctly. Avoid negative enforcement like scolding, yelling or hauling on the leash. Jake will not be perfectly behaved for some time; you should keep his leash attached at home when you expect visitors. If he gets overexcited when a visitor arrives and he won’t sit, take him to his crate or another room until he calms down. Even after he masters the training and is better behaved at home and on the leash, you’ll need to train him regularly so that he doesn’t slip back into his jumping-up habit.

Refrigerators that inform their owners when it’s time to buy more eggs and thermostats that learn homeowners’ heating and cooling preferences may once have seemed like futuristic ideas straight out of a sci-fi movie. However, such products are no longer a dream but a reality. The term “smart home” refers to a residence that has appliances, HVAC, lighting, entertainment systems, security, and many more devices that communicate with one another. Such devices can be controlled remotely, according to SmartHomeUSA, an automation product retailer. Proponents of smart home technology say features can help people save money on utilities and conserve natural resources, all the while providing peace of mind to homeowners. In 2016, 80 million smart home devices were delivered worldwide. That marks a 64 percent increase from 2015, according to the research data firm IHS Markit. The smart home trend is only expected to grow in coming years. Although there’s interest in smart home technology, the industry remains fragmented. Consumers are trying to figure out which devices are simply fun and which provide practical benefits. Furthermore, the range of smart devices is expanding rapidly, making potential compatability issues a concern. Companies that plan to educate consumers further about the advantages of smart home features and are open to standardization may have the best chances of survival. Smart technology is taking over and is likely to continue changing the way people live and work.

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal.

• Water Heater (installs & repairs) • Bathroom & Kitchen Remodels • Backflow Testing (NYS certified) • AC Repairs

Fully Insured • Free Estimates

The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Vitamins for Macular Degeneration Coincide With New Cramps

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been told at the age of 70 that I am in the early stages of the eye disease macular degeneration. The doctor told me to take PreserVision AREDS 2 vitamins. He said that I will be taking them for the rest of my life. I started them immediately, and a few nights later, I started having severe left leg cramps to the point where I woke out of a sound sleep to jump out of bed and shake off the cramp. Is this typical? -- C.L. ANSWER: For the dry form of age-related macular degeneration, the AREDS and AREDS2 vitamins are the usual treatment. Although they are not a cure, they do slow progression of the disease. My experience with these has been that they almost never cause side effects, and muscle cramping is not a reported side effect by the manufacturer. The timing, however, certainly is suspicious. You can try stopping them for a few days, then restarting them to see if the cramps are truly affected by the vitamins. If they are, you have two choices. The first is to deal with cramps the same way that people who get them at night for no particular reason deal with it, which is by getting regular moderate exercise and stretching the calf and hamstring muscles before bed. Having weight on the toes is a trigger for many people, so very light bed covers that aren’t tucked in can be surprisingly helpful. I’ve had a few readers come up with devices to keep all weight off of their toes in bed. Your second option is to discuss an alternative with your eye professional. The AREDS and AREDS2 formulas were shown to be helpful, but some eye professionals only choose a few components of the formula. ***

HEALTH CARE SCREENINGS FOR MEN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 39 Diabetes: Risk factors and warning signs will dictate if men between the ages of 18 and 39 require diabetes screening. For example, the U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that a BMI over 25 is considered overweight, which is a risk factor for diabetes. Men who fall into this category should be screened for diabetes starting at age 35 (the USNLM urges Asian American men to be screened if their BMI exceeds 23). Providers also may test men’s blood sugar levels if their blood pressure is 130/80 or higher and/or if they have a first degree relative with diabetes or a history of heart disease.

Do you have HEEL pain or ARCH pain? HEEL SPUR SYNDROME/PLANTAR FASCIITIS is a common problem among people who are active. It starts as a dull intermittent pain in the heel and progresses to a sharp persistent pain. Classically, it is worse in the morning with the first few steps, after sitting, after standing or after walking. • Plantar fasciitis often begins with irritation and tearing of the fibrous band of tissue on the bottom of the foot, which may eventually result in the formation of a heel spur. • Contributing factors: Flat pronated feet, high arched feet, poor shoe support, increased age, sudden weight increase, increased activity level, family tendency. • 95% of our patients’ symptoms are resolved with conservative treatment, avoiding surgical intervention. • We also offer surgical procedures with the best post op success rates using Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy techniques (minimal incisions and scarring; often back in a shoe in 1 week).

WHEN IS ENDODONTIC SURGERY NEEDED? Sometimes a root canal is not enough to save a tooth. Not all hope is lost, however, because an endodontic surgical procedure can help preserve a tooth after a root canal. Endodontic surgery can find small fractures and hidden canals that aren’t visible on X-rays. It can also be used to remove calcium deposits and treat damaged roots and the surrounding bone. An apicoectomy, or root-end resection, is the most common endodontic treatment. This procedure involves removing inflamed or infected tissue and the root end. You may receive a small filling and dissolving stitches. Local anesthetic is used, and advanced technologies like operating microscopes and digital imaging allow the procedure to be performed quickly and comfortably. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, our philosophy is not only to treat dental needs, but more importantly,

to educate our patients to prevent future problems. To this end, our mission is to provide open and free communication and the highest standard of care in an environment of health, mutual understanding, and respect. We offer complete general dental care, from cleanings to full mouth reconstruction to repair of any damage done by neglect or trauma. We also provide cosmetic dentistry here at 6 Batavia City Centre, for the sunniest smiles possible. Call us at 585.343.4246 for an appointment.

2.

P.S. Endodontic surgeries are usually performed in a dental clinic under local anesthetic. Most patients are able to drive themselves home and return to normal activities the next day.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the early 1800s, a railroad marketer set up a head-on collision between two trains as a publicity stunt. Some 40,000 people came to watch, and the resulting boiler explosion killed three spectators. But ticket sales soared, and railways everywhere staged train crashes right up until the Great Depression. * One of the weirdest scandals in sports history occurred in 1973 when New York Yankees players Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich decided to trade families -- wives, children, even dogs! After the couples became close friends, Peterson fell in love with Kekich’s wife and vice versa. “It’s a love story. It wasn’t anything dirty,” Peterson told a reporter in 2013. Peterson is still married to the former Mrs. Kekich, but Kekich and the former Mrs. Peterson later split up.

Daena Ford: A 31-Year Journey with Braddock Bay Raptor Research BY SUZIE WELLS

F

or over three decades, Daena Ford has dedicated her life to the world of raptors through her involvement with Braddock Bay Raptor Research (BBRR). From her early days as an intern to her current role as the organization’s president, Daena’s passion for these majestic birds has shaped her career, leading to significant contributions in education and conservation. Daena’s journey with BBRR began in 1992 when she joined as an intern during her junior year at SUNY Geneseo, where she studied biology. Intrigued by every aspect of BBRR, including hawkwatch, raptor banding, and education, Daena became hooked on the world of raptors. Over the years, she evolved from intern to BBRR’s education director, spearheading the acquisition of raptors for educational purposes, developing and implementing programs onsite and throughout the community. In pursuit of her passion, Daena returned to school, earning a teaching degree and secondary science education certification from Roberts Wesleyan University. She taught middle school science in Hilton for six years, continuing her volunteer involvement with BBRR. Since 2001, she has held leadership roles within the organization, currently serving as its president, overseeing all operations, including field research and education programs. Daena’s fascination with raptors goes beyond their beauty; she says she sees them as symbols of strength and grace, playing a crucial role as environmental barometers, “helping us keep tabs on the health of the ecosystems we share with them.” Raptors, with their “wow factor,” captivate people’s attention, offering a unique avenue for people to connect with nature. For her, raptor migration is a marvel, and witnessing the spectacle at Braddock Bay sparked a deep passion. She says, “Seeing hawks, sometimes hundreds or thousands at a time, swirling overhead as they pass you by is just amazing. Learning about where they travel, and how they survive these journeys has been fascinating, and there’s still more to be discovered.” In 2016, BBRR revived its education raptor program, and Daena played a pivotal role by building enclosures on her private property to house four education Photo credit: Diane W. Dersch raptors – a Red-tailed Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Broad-winged Hawk, and a Merlin. These birds, unable to survive in the wild due to injuries, now serve as ambassadors for their species, contributing to BBRR’s educational outreach. Over the past few years, Daena has conducted nearly 500 programs, reaching over 25,000 people across 12 different counties. From formal presentations in schools and Scout groups to participating in festivals, Daena and her team have covered extensive ground. Notably, her involvement in bringing education birds to the City of Rochester’s recreation centers underscores her commitment to broadening the reach of environmental education.

Above all, she says the best part of her work with BBRR out in the field with wild birds or working with the education raptors, is being able to share activities and birds with various audiences as well as watching students have their “first” moments during field trips, spotting their first bald eagle or first owl in the wild. Daena enjoys bringing the birds to schools and recreation centers in the city of Rochester, providing urban children the opportunity to experience wild animals in a unique way, and introducing them to species they could see on their own even in the city. Every year since 2017, Daena brings the birds to the 5th grade art classes at Manor Elementary School in Honeoye Falls. Students observe and sketch the birds and then fine tune their art pieces. Finished artwork by several students goes on display at BBRR’s annual Bird of Prey Days festival in the spring. Daena emphasizes the importance of raptors as indicators of ecosystem health. With some species facing population declines, she encourages people to take small steps, such as planting native plants, avoiding harmful pesticides, installing nest boxes for cavity nesters, and cleaning up trash, to support these essential predators. Increasing awareness is key to fostering a connection with the natural world. Daena’s life extends beyond her work with BBRR. As a former naturalist and conservation educator, her involvement in the Hawk Migration Association of North America and her passion for birding and hiking showcase a lifelong commitment to environmental conservation. Her family, including her two children and beloved rescue dogs, adds another layer to her rich and fulfilling life. Daena Ford’s remarkable journey with Braddock Bay Raptor Research encapsulates a lifetime of dedication to raptors, education, and environmental conservation. Her tireless efforts have not only enriched the lives of those she encounters but have also left an indelible mark on the world of raptor research and education. As she continues to inspire and educate, Daena invites everyone to explore the wonders of nature and join the cause for raptor conservation. Check out Braddock Bay Raptor Research at www.bbrr.org and on FB and IG.

Daena says she has too many favorite memories to recount, including exciting encounters with wild raptors, such as finding her first ever Northern saw-whet owl in the wild, witnessing one of our

Here’s a Tip On internet memes, they call them “life hacks,” simple tricks to save you perhaps time, money or simply frustration. Here’s mine: Place a bowl near your entryway. Place your keys in the bowl when you come home. They stay there until you leave. No more lost keys. Now more life hacks for your tip file. -- JoAnn Put a dryer fabric softener sheet on the back of a fan. It sticks and will distribute a fresh scent through your room. -- T.I. via email Put an apple in the potato bag to keep them from growing buds. Check often. -- E.W. in Oregon Sharpen your scissors by cutting through aluminum foil. All you have to do is fold a piece over on itself and use your dull scissors to cut strips. Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from grow ing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But w et leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the law n through the w inter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons w hy so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Puzzle Answers This Week

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Keeping a car waxed and sealed can help maintain a durable exterior finish. This includes not only the paint, but the rubber and vinyl parts of the car’s exterior. Winter is a good time to switch to a heavy-duty synthetic wax that can shield against water and road salts. High-quality sealants can be used on bumpers, trim and rubber door seals as added protection. Speak with an automotive retailer or even the car dealership if you are unsure which products will make your car’s parts most durable for winter weather. Do not stop washing your car just because the weather is cold. Slushy, wet roads and snow-melting salts can speed up the formation of rust or other decay on the undercarriage of the vehicle. These materials will need to be periodically cleaned off. Flush the underside of the vehicle whenever possible, taking advantage of any dry, slightly warmer days.

Seasonal Tree A big thank you to the person(s) who decorate the evergreen tree at the corner of Cheese Factory and Quaker Meetinghouse Roads in Honeoye Falls. We always look forward to seeing the latest decorations as they change to celebrate the current holiday/season. You have consistently brightened this corner for years and have brought a smile to many faces. Please know your hard work is appreciated very much!

Merr Christma!

Don’t Eat Then To the person who felt the need to bash your local farmers over….. mud…. you reamed out farmers over mud. Farmers are under more than enough pressure already, with an alarming percentage of American farms going out of business year after year after year. Only a small percentage consistently make a profit. If you want them to get out and pick up dirt, expect to pay them more for it. If you still don’t get it, grow your own. Quit being entitled, eat the food they grew for you, and be grateful. More Being Added I see more junk and vehicles are being added to the Historical Area? I am not sure why this is OK. I know of many people that have contacted the village about this area. Is anything being done? As some residents are afraid to say anything because of the connections involved. When people are driving thru the area this is what they are seeing. Do we want this to be seen as a junk area? Are there any regulations regarding storing vehicles, boats, RV’s, containers? When the village board is asked, they say they will look into it, but never give a response on why this area is OK to be treated as a junkyard. Some residents take pride in their surroundings and village, while others say they do, but take advantage of their so-called liberties. Can we please clean up the historical site? Garbage is garbage no matter who or what it is!!

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens. People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire. ~Hugh Macmillan
