Act of kindness A huge thank you to the kind lady who paid for my order at Dunkin’ Donuts on Saturday the 28th in Batavia. I was having a tough morning, and you made my day. Many blessings to you and your family, and I will definitely pay it forward! Kudos to feeding the birds How petty! I can’t believe someone would be asked to leave a parking lot over feeding birds! I am an animal lover, especially fond of birds, and I applaud the kindness you have shown by caring for the seagulls. Can’t believe that the world has become so cynical and harsh that

someone would be yelled at, or asked to leave, over feeding a bird! Keep up the good work!

getting my hair done, I paid for my appointment and left. To my surprise, when I went to pay after my next visit, they told me that the gentleman on my previous visit had paid for my appointment. Keep up the great work! Thank you, Penny Saver, for What a lovely surprise and how your great magazine! I’ve been very kind of him! Thank you so reading it for almost 30 years. much! Keep up the great work! Now getting my granddaughter to enter contests! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! Stay safe! Sherri

Loser To the loser who stole the World War II Veteran’s Flag I put on my Dad’s grave at [local cemetery] in [local town]: I can’t even say you should be ashamed of yourself, because losers aren’t. To think a veteran or active military member would risk their life for some sad, pathetic grave robber like you is beyond words. It did not blow away, nor did an animal carry it off, other than the two-legged loser that stole it.

Beauty shop blessing I go to the beauty shop every week. On my last visit, I noticed a gentleman sitting in a chair waiting for his wife. After

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Examine your priorities. Achieving goals is easier when their goals can be among your biggest priorities. Examine your priorities to determine if you can fully commit to goals that may require significant time commitments. Men and women who are already stretched thin may need to recalibrate their goals or make changes in other areas of their lives before they can fully commit to pursuing new goals.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Inexpensive gift idea: On the front of an empty photo album or scrapbook, print out and arrange color photos of your recipient in a collage. Glue the photos to the front of the album and cover with a decoupage glaze, like Mod Podge. Let dry and glaze again. You’ve just made a one-of-a-kind gift! * If you are a re-gifter, always document from whom and in what year you received a gift. Then re-gift it to someone who will have little to no contact with that person. For example, if Aunt Emily from out of town sends you a lovely soap basket that you would never use, you could re-gift it for your office party.

The cardboard tube from gift wrap can be cut into smaller pieces, which you can wrap strands of tree or house lights around. Boxes can be put to use to hold ornaments or other decorations, and ribbon and bows that are still in good condition can be tucked away for re-use next year.” -- E.F. in Oregon

The Little Free Pantry: Neighbors Feeding Neighbors BY AMANDA DUDEK

Y

ou are probably familiar with this old riddle: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. When Batavia’s Jenn Noon asked herself, How do you feed a city, the answer was clear. One neighborhood at a time. It all started one hot afternoon last August. Two Batavia business owners threw a great afternoon for kids on State Street, complete, with free popsicles, sidewalk chalk and more. Noon, who spends a lot of time volunteering since her decision to go back to college, described the State Street neighborhood as one of Batavia’s more challenging areas. “I wanted to participate, so I set up tables with free snacks for the kids,” she explained. Just like that, The Little Free Pantry was born. “I didn’t have a vehicle or anything like that, so I was walking to and from stores a lot,” Noon recalled. “Marianne Skye, owner of Blue Pearl Yoga, was a lifesaver. She would pick me up, drop things off. She even had a refrigerator donated to us! She has just been amazing.” Skye had gotten involved with the Pantry, which started out as a repurposed entertainment center, quite by accident. “Marianne had overplanted one of their fields,” Noon remembered. “She told me about the farm, and I told her about the Pantry. Then, vegetables started flowing in. I remember they gave us daikon radishes, and you couldn’t even get those in stores!” After the addition of a refrigerator, the question of where it could be successfully hosted naturally arose. “I was turned down by several businesses, but the Dr. Kubiniec and his wife, Sharon, wholeheartedly agreed to host the Pantry right outside their dentist’s office,” said Noon. “They sponsor the electricity every month, as well.” It wasn’t long before the community embraced the idea. Keanon Sean of Batavia, built an enclosure around the refrigerator at its new location, including pantry shelves on the inside. He also installed hooks which Noon has used to offer coats to anyone in need. “Neighbors began talking to neighbors maybe they hadn’t before,” shared Noon, adding the Pantry has been called a blessing. “One gentleman came in on my birthday, and I believe he is a Veteran,” she said. “I had seen him frequently during the summer, and we would greet each other and have short conversations. He came up and handed me some money. I could tell by the look in his

eyes it really meant a lot to hm to give back. He said the Pantry had literally helped him survive, and he didn’t know what he would have done this past summer without it.” As the demand grew, so did Noon’s resources. She soon met with some of the ladies from Schwab Farms at the Genesee Country Farmers Market in Batavia. “They allowed me to come down several days a week to volunteer with them in exchange for produce for the Pantry,” said Noon. “It was amazing the kinds of things we received: apples, pumpkins, whatever the market had all season.” The Little Free Pantry is quickly growing. “The goal is obviously to be there to help those in need, but we also want to fight food waste and food insecurity,” stated Noon. “Almost half of all food in the United States goes to waste, and we would like to connect more area

hoping to use as a second Little Free Pantry in the Liberty Street area if a host business can be found. She credits the Pantry’s success to the generosity of its supporters. “I have been left speechless many, many times and have been brought to tears by people’s kindness,” said Noon. “I have to give a shout out to this incredible community because they made this possible. I was not expecting this kind of response, and I am blessed for the families.” Meanwhile, the Pantry continues to evolve. T-shirts Etc., Inc. recently donated two large canvases which are in the process of being painted in an effort to add artwork to the Pantry locations. At the same time, Noon is gearing up for the Pantry’s Christmas food drive, exclaiming, “It seems like every week, we have something new and exciting!”

businesses with our Pantry so that instead of tossing good food at the end of the day, a business can bring it to us. If they let us know, we can recognize the business for helping us reach more people in need.” Networking and expanding are happening more quickly than expected. “We have partnered with quite a few different local agencies,” said Noon. “We have given produce to Community Action, Veteran’s Services, Eagle Star Housing, Julie Mueller Wasilewski with Batavia Central School District, Ashley Rose Greene who is the Director of CASA, and others.” During the Thanksgiving holiday, the Pantry completely blew its goals out of the water. Noon had set a goal of creating five “I was not expecting Thanksgiving food boxes for area families; the Pantry created 74. “We this kind of response, also delivered 40 from Community and I am blessed for Action and donated canned goods the families!” to other agencies which helped - Jenn Noon create 200 additional Thanksgiving meals!” Noon enthused. In fact, the Pantry has grown so much in its five-month lifetime that it has already received another refrigerator which Noon is

STUDY SHOWS GIFT CARDS CAN GIVE A BOOST TO SMALL BUSINESSES (NAPSI)—If you own or run any of America’s nearly 31 million small businesses, recent research reveals gift cards can be a real gift to your bottom line. According to a 2019 Small Business Gift Card Study commissioned by First Data, now Fiserv, gift card programs help small business owners bring in more sales, attract new customers, and build relationships with their customers. Small Businesses, Big Benefits Not only do gift cards benefit a business, consumers expect them to be available at their favorite stores. In fact, 74 percent of consumers surveyed said they regularly buy gift cards from small businesses. And for business owners, offering gift cards can: • Grow sales—Nearly 80 percent of consumers said if they have a gift card valued at 88 cents, they will visit the store to redeem it • Attract customers—90 percent of consumers who receive a gift card from a small business they have never visited said they would shop at that business and return in the future

• Build loyalty—56 percent of consumers who shop at small businesses join their loyalty or frequent shopper programs. Of consumers that join loyalty programs at small businesses, 73 percent said gift cards are a preferred way for their loyalty to be rewarded. Restaurants, Coffee Shops, and Salons When asked about the ideal gift card to give someone, or receive and use themselves, consumers agreed on their top three: casual dining restaurants; coffee shops; personal services (i.e., hair or nail salon). Other popular businesses from which to give or receive gift cards included supermarket/ grocery stores, entertainment/movie theaters, and quick-serve restaurants. Employee Incentives Gift cards are often a popular choice for employers who use them to say thank you or reward a job well done. For 90 percent of consumers, they’ve not only received a gift card from their employer, but view it as an incentive to reward their hard work. Additional Findings • When purchasing gift cards, 60 percent of consumers prefer plastic cards or paper certificates, but interest in digital gift cards is growing. • 58 percent of small business owners said plastic gift cards cost the business owner less to manage than paper certificates. SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born.

Hosts may agonize over their holiday menus, and some may feel compelled to prepare a family specialty or the same dishes their parents or grandparents prepared for holiday dinners when they were children. But holiday hosts can make things easy on themselves by choosing dishes they’ve made in the past, regardless of their place in family history. Chances are the ingredients for hosts’ own specialties are already in the pantry, saving a potentially time-consuming trip to the grocery store. And thanks to the familiarity factor, hosts’ own specialties likely won’t require as much time to prepare. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Holiday Decorations Can be Dangerous

100 Day pay option available. Check out our website for more details Transmission pick up and drop off available to local shops! Call for details.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My aunt was admiring the wreath I made from natural materials, and during the conversation she mentioned that the berries might be poisonous to my cat, “Darwin.” If this is true, should I remove them from the wreath? -- Katie V., Boise, Idaho DEAR KATIE: Unfortunately, yes. If the wreath is accessible to your pets and an ingredient on it may be toxic, you will need to remove that ingredient and replace it -either with a nontoxic alternative or a silk or plastic equivalent. Dogs and cats alike can be at risk from certain plants, berries and leaves that are common during the holiday season. Holly, mistletoe, lilies and amaryllis all are toxic to pets. Cats are especially known for being attracted to lilies, and they can climb to just about any point in a house, so it’s important to avoid having these around at all. Artificial decorations can also pose a danger. Tinsel is the biggest no-no in a pet household; cats that ingest the sparkly strings can suffer intestinal blockage. Plus, it’s not great for the environment. Breakable ornaments, especially those thin glass bulbs that cats love to bat around, can shatter and cut their paws. And if a cat or dog ingests the broken material ... well, I don’t want to think about that. Candles can singe curious noses and wayward tails; use electric or battery-powered instead. Strings of lights pose a tangling and choking risk; place them up high, in a hard to access spot, and attach them securely using staples so a pet can’t pull them down. Coil extra electrical cord and fasten with a twist tie so pets don’t get tangled. Keep your holidays safe for pets, and they’ll stay merry, just like you. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Pants on Fire! The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has put out a timely warning about fire safety, especially for seniors. The main statistic is grim: We seniors make up about 16% of the population, but account for a whopping 77% of all clothing fires. Cooking heads the list of dangers, with fires from the stovetop and oven. Closely following are fires from smoking and being outside burning trash and debris. Space heaters are on the list, of course. The advice from the experts: • Don't cook when you're wearing a bathrobe or anything with long, wide sleeves. Any loose clothing can catch fire if you're too close. • If you burn debris and trash outside, stay back from the fire. A better idea, however, is not to do any outdoor burning yourself. • Don't smoke in bed, ever. • Keep an eye on your space heater. It's far too easy to be too close to a space heater and not notice that your pants or robe are about to catch fire. • If the worst happens and your clothes catch fire, don't run! Drop to the floor and roll, and keep rolling until the fire is out. Grab a blanket if it's necessary to put the fire out. Call 911 and put cool water on your burns until help arrives. • Do you have a fire extinguisher? Did you know that the chemicals inside can expire? They will typically last from five to 15 years, so be sure to check yours.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Here’s How to Reduce Risk of Heart Disease ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 70-year-old female who had a stress test, echocardiogram and carotid study. I passed all tests. My cholesterol is 173, with my HDL 56, LDL 95.6 and triglycerides 108. My blood pressure is 110/64. The cardiologist put me on 5 mg of Crestor. He feels this will help my numbers. He also has me taking CoQ10 and vitamin D3 in case my legs start aching from the Crestor. I’ve been taking everything now for two weeks, and my legs are starting to ache. Is it really necessary to stay on Crestor? -- J.S. ANSWER: I put all your numbers into the standard risk calculator at www.cvriskcalculator.com, and your risk for heart disease or stroke in the next 10 years is 6.8%. That is in a range where medication therapy is not usually recommended. Of course, I can’t tell you to stop taking the medication your doctor has recommended. He may know something about you that I don’t. It’s possible you have a less-common risk factor your cardiologist may not have told you about. Some people with very good cholesterol and blood pressure numbers have high levels of C-reactive protein, for example, which confers an increased risk for heart disease. That’s true even in people with desirable cholesterol levels, and people in that situation would clearly benefit from taking Crestor or a similar medicine. All of these medicines have the risk of muscle aches, although the risk of serious muscle damage is |very small. Nearly everyone can reduce their heart disease risk by having a diet with very little meat but high in vegetables, legumes and nuts, along with whole grains and fruits. Regular moderate exercise is as important as diet. Keeping stress levels low, having good close relationships and sleeping 7-8 hours daily are underappreciated beneficial factors to reduce heart risk as well. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. WHAT IS DEPRESSION? Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest. The Mayo Clinic says depression can produce a variety of symptoms and affect the way a person thinks, acts and feels. Symptoms may include changes in sleeping patterns, anxiety, fatigue, weight gain or weight loss, unexplained aches and pains, and difficulty concentrating.

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

KEEP THAT SOCKET COVERED! Although there will likely be some discomfort involved in having a tooth removed, many people find relief from the pain of an infected or impacted tooth. However, if the pain becomes worse a few days after the extraction, you may be dealing with a relatively rare condition called “dry socket.” When a tooth is removed, it leaves a hole known as a socket, and in most cases that socket will be filled with a blood clot that covers the nerves to protect them until the gums heal. If that blood clot becomes dislodged, it leaves the nerves exposed, resulting in intense pain. This is why your dentist will tell you to avoid things like using a straw after extraction.

Whether you are in our office for a tooth extraction, a smile makeover, or for a simple cleaning, our personal, casual, and relaxed style in providing quality dental care will help put you at ease. We’ll take the time to get to know your needs, answer your questions about home care of your dental issues, tell you about the latest techniques and materials, and make sure that you are comfortable. Find out just how pleasant a visit to the dentist and enhancing your smile can be. Call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 585.343.4246, for complete family dental care at 6 Batavia City Centre.

P.S. Wisdom tooth extractions are more likely to result in dry socket issues than other teeth, and people who smoke are more susceptible to the condition in general.

COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT

Give Back And Feel Rewarded

Elderly People in your area need your help.

• Doctor Appointments • Errands • Companionship • Meals References, background check required. Flexible Hours.

Help The Elderly Health & Wellness Referral Services 212 Main St., Leicester, NY • (585) 382-3260 “The Alternative to a nursing home”

(NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys. COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.” Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia; • 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. Learn More: Additional information about COVID-19 and how it affects kidneys can be found at www.kidney.org/coronavirus.

HOMETOWN

“We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know because they have never deceived us” ~ Samuel Johnson Each year we read nw stories about victims who have been duped by confident men. The same old crooked schemes work on people who should know better but who put an almost childlike trust in total strangers. Johnson speculates that we tend to believe strangers because they have no record of deceit. The people close to us may have “fibbed” to us or misrepresented facts, perhaps only to tease. The stranger’s record is unblemished until we learn to our sorrow that he, too, might lie to us for gain. There are definite advantages in making funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Let us review these with you…no cost or obligation.

GREAT GIFTS FOR SENIORS: GYM MEMBERSHIPS According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, more than 80 percent of adults do not meet the guidelines for aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities. That can be especially troubling for seniors, who are at greater risk for osteoporosis, a medical condition in which age-related tissue loss contributes to brittle, fragile bones. Physical activity, including muscle-strengthening activities like weight training, can help combat osteoporosis. Family members stuck on what to get aging loved ones may want to consider gifting a membership to a local gym. Many gyms offer heavily discounted memberships to seniors, and such gyms may even offer senior fitness classes at no additional cost.

Soldiers were typically paid in coins, but shortages forced armies to temporarily issue IOUs -- in one case, in the form of cut-up playing cards. * On Dec. 11, 1978, a half dozen masked robbers raid the Lufthansa Airlines cargo building at JFK Airport in New York, making off with more than $5 million in cash ($20 million in today’s dollars) and almost $1 million in jewelry. * On Dec. 12, 1989, Leona Helmsley, nicknamed the “Queen of Mean,” is sentenced to four years in prison, 750 hours of community service and a $7.1 million tax-fraud fine in New York. Helmsley once quipped that “only the little people pay taxes.” * On Dec. 13, 2003, in Seattle, the iconic Hat ‘n’ Boots Tex Gas Station is hauled away from the spot where it had stood for almost 50 years.
