FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2021
Holiday shopping season typically begins the day after Thanksgiving and extends all the way to Christmas Eve. While that’s a considerable amount of time for shoppers to find gifts for everyone on their shopping list, many people will still find themselves putting holiday shopping off until the last minute. In certain ways, last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever. Thanks to online retailers who can ship products overnight, men and women who delay their holiday shopping have more options at their disposal than they did before the arrival of the Internet. And unlike the days of yore when the best deals were largely exclusive to Black Friday, some shoppers find that competition between online retailers and traditional brick-and-mortar stores is so great that deals can be found regardless of when they begin shopping. But while waiting until the last minute to begin holiday shopping may not be as risky as it used to be, shoppers may still benefit by sticking to certain strategies so they can find the perfect gifts without breaking the bank.

MAKE HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXCURSIONS SPECIAL As they fulfill the social obligations of the holiday season, many people find themselves spending less time at home. Consumer Reports notes that individuals spend a great deal of time shopping for gifts come the holiday season. Americans engage in 15 hours of shopping on average, with women spending twice as long as their male counterparts (20 hours versus 10). In addition, the average person devotes 10 or more hours to wrapping and returning gifts. Holiday shopping can monopolize people’s time away from home during the months of November and December, and some shoppers wonder how they become so disconnected from other activities, including family time, that they cherish throughout the rest of the year. One way to tackle holiday shopping without sacrificing time with family and friends is to make holiday shopping a social event.
With best regards, The Teresa House Board of Directors, Leah, Stephanie, Kate, Staff and Celebrating 28 years of service Volunteers in the community

GIFT IDEAS FOR LAST-MINUTE SHOPPERS Early bird shoppers may purchase and even wrap gifts before December, but eleventh-hour shoppers may need some help come the holiday season. For those last-minute folks, there still are plenty of ways to ensure your shopping list is checked off. The following gifts are quick to purchase and can still make for thoughtful presents. • Liquor or wine basket: Prepackaged spirits often come with decorative glasses and other accoutrements for entertaining. What’s more, they’re convenient to purchase if you’re on a time crunch. • Fueling station gift card: Drivers will appreciate a gift card to their favorite fueling station. Such cards suit anyone who has a car and frequently travels or commutes. • Food basket: A visit to the supermarket or a convenience center can yield many tasty finds that can be packaged together into a gift basket. Pair foods with a gift card to that retailer. • Streaming service: Offer to treat a loved one to a month or two of their favorite streaming television or movie service. If they already have streaming subscriptions, offer to cover the cost of the subscription for a few months. • Premade gifts: Don’t overlook your local pharmacy as a place to find convenient gifts. Look for unique items in the seasonal aisle, where you might be able to find stockingstuffer toiletries or cosmetic gifts that suit several people on your shopping list.

Practicing interpersonal skills: All the technological savviness in the world cannot compensate for the power of strong interpersonal skills. Being able to address a group of people or speak one-on-one is essential in the workplace and in life. When younger generations speak to older adults, they may become stronger at verbal discourse and have greater perspective of different points of conversation.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Christmas Dinner Happens on the Sly The annual Christmas dinner at the senior center was a wonderful event, mostly because it didn’t happen at all. The original plan -- seniors sitting in a cold parking lot outside the center to eat food that would stay hot for maybe one minute -- was ditched by means of a petition to board members. That petition mentioned the absolute folly of the whole outdoor dining idea. The board’s second plan was to host the dinner indoors, but for only one-third the number of guests, with clear Plexiglas shields on the tables, which would interfere with conversation. There was a snap, an awakening, an audible collective click -- and the seniors said NO. The former recreation-center supervisor, who had quit after too many snarling meetings about yoga classes masked versus unmasked, was brought back to open the rec center. He’d fled to his cabin in the woods, tossing the keys to others, to sit out the insanity, at which point the town changed the locks. Once brought back, he quickly jimmied open the rec center door and installed a new lock, smiling the whole time. Organizers came together in secret with not a word said to senior-center board members (or the town council). Tables and chairs were borrowed. One of the town’s finer restaurants (the owner himself a senior) was coaxed into providing finger foods and drinks and two bartenders. A half dozen seniors who were in a band years ago regrouped to provide the music and play songs we actually knew. The annual Christmas dinner turned dance party was a major hit, and just what we needed after this long pandemic lockdown. We ate and we mingled and we drank and we laughed and we danced. And long after what should have been bedtime for most of us, we were still there dancing. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

SNAP AND SHARE Send us your photos and captions at gvpennysaver.com under My Hometown
HOMETOWN PHOTOS Be careful, little eyes I love President Trump. You know what I hate? All the Biden flags and signs with FOUL language on them. I have a 9-yearold son and 6-year-old daughter who we are raising to be America-loving patriots. But when my daughter questions the meaning of the words on these flags, my blood boils. You do no service to our party or our innocent kids. You look uncouth and, yes, ignorant. Being a mom of kids in this insane world is hard enough without my own party letting me down. Please think of the little kids. Put yourself in the shoes of parents trying to protect innocence and decency.
S E V RA CMBB Raiders Coming from a “rival” school, I’ve just got to say how nice the people at the Football game in October were. They have an awesome facility. Lots of kids running around having fun and even the crew working in concessions were great. I’ve been to many schools we were playing against, and this one by far was the friendliest. You should be proud of your school and community.
Foreign aid correction To the person ranting about foreign aid to Israel at $10 million a day, your information is incorrect. The correct amount is approximately $3 million. I agree, still a lot of money, but my point is that if you are going to rant, please have your information correct.
Above & beyond The Humane Society of Livingston County would like to thank Dr. Ken Bedell and his staff at the Lima Veterinary Center for their outstanding service to us. He and his staff have gone above and beyond in their dealings with us. Whether it’s been dealing with an emergency or fitting in one more cat or kitten into their schedule, they are always friendly and willing to work with us for the betterment of Livingston County cats. We would not be able to do what we do without them, and we appreciate them tremendously.
Almost true The person who was lecturing on global warming started out okay, but then made the same mistake common to all the global warming believers including AOC and began blaming weather on global warming which meteorologists will tell you is not the case. They will know that the earth often goes through periods of temperature fluctuation. Previous to 50 years ago, how would we know if a polar cap melted? CA wildfires are the result of not doing proper forest management. Unlike global warming doomsayers, I am open to listening to ALL the science. We should work on things that are proven to cause global warming but not at the expense of our standard of living. Trust American ingenuity. Study carbon trapping instead of getting rid of gasoline engines with no real plan to replace them. Electric cars? CA’s power grid can’t meet the demands of their electric needs now, so how will they be able to charge the 14,894,912 cars currently registered in that state? Together we can find the answers! Pickup Spaces Why do stores place their pickup spaces as close to the store as possible? One [local store] in [local town] eliminated some handicap spots to install pickup spaces. If you are having your items delivered to your car, does it matter that the pickup spaces are close to the store? The pickup area could be at the back of the lot, and it wouldn’t matter to the customer. It is unfair to shoppers who need handicap spaces to have them moved so that people who stay in their cars can wait closer to the store.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Get rid of your old holiday lights. Still using the same Christmas lights you used in 1995? Such lights are likely incandescent bulbs that are considerably less efficient than today’s LED Christmas lights. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that LED lights consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. In addition, the OEERE says that LED holiday lights are easier to install and that as many as 25 strings of lights can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket. A Visit from St. Nicholas BY CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave a lustre of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer, With a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the housetop the coursers they flew With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack. His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight— “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

Geico indicates that studies have shown people are limited in the amount of information they can process at any one time. Driving requires focus and an ability to react to a host of potential circumstances. Distractions compromise drivers’ ability to focus. Reducing distractions can considerably cut down on the number of motor vehicle accidents each year.

8141 EAST MAIN RD. LEROY 768-7959 ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced. Page 19

CURE!!
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Your fungal toenails before SUMMER 2022
Dumping Syndrome and Obesity ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend was given a test to see how long food stayed in her stomach after eating. She was told that it stayed only a short time before continuing its journey, a much shorter time than the average person. This was given as a reason for her obesity, that she experienced hunger sooner than most people. Does this really happen, and is there a way for her to manage it so that she can lose weight? -- G.J. ANSWER: A gastric emptying study is usually used to look for delayed gastric emptying, also called gastroparesis. It can be the result of several different types of nerve diseases, but especially diabetes. An abnormally rapid gastric emptying is also called dumping syndrome, and is often a problem after some types of gastric bypass surgeries. I did find a paper from the 1980s suggesting that obese people have shorter gastric emptying times. This was confirmed in a trial from 2015 looking at the diabetes drug exenatide (Byetta), which is sometimes used to help people lose weight, even if they do not have diabetes. Interestingly, exenatide was more likely to cause people to lose weight if they had faster gastric emptying times. I do not mean to suggest that fast gastric emptying is the only reason for your friend’s (or anyone else’s) weight problems. Obesity is a complex problem with no single cause or solution in most people. I am glad you wrote. I did not know about this research before, and it may be worth it for your friend to discuss a trial of exenatide with her doctor.
• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? • Now’s the time to get treatment. If left untreated, fungal toenails can: affect your immune system, cause recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance! • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation and numbness to their feet can develop more serious problems. • There are also safer new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one-a-day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2022. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

Walk, run or ride to the gym. Many people get the bulk, if not the entirety, of their exercise at a gym. For those who live outside of major cities, that likely involves driving to and from a gym before and after workouts. Instead of driving, consider walking, running or riding to the gym. Each option provides great cardiovascular exercise that can reduce or replace the time people spend on treadmills or elliptical machines. And cutting back on driving reduces fuel consumption and auto emissions, greatly benefitting the planet.

DEPRESSION COMMON BUT TREATABLE It’s normal to experience feelings of sadness and grief from time to time. But when these feelings are prolonged or interfere with daily life, they may be symptomatic of depression. Depression can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or economic status. The National Institute of Mental Health says around 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Understanding depression can help those dealing with the disorder.

NANOTECHNOLOGY IN DENTISTRY The latest innovation in dental technology is nanotechnology, utilizing nanobots (tiny robots). The use of nanotechnology in surgical dentistry is groundbreaking for treatment in restorative dentistry, orthodontics, and periodontics. Often used during oral implant surgery, the nanobot surgical guide aids in meticulously directing the oral surgeon during simple and complex surgical procedures. Because these advanced surgical guides require longer drills, patients have to open their mouths extra wide to permit more room to allow the nanobot accurate guidance for the dentist or oral surgeon to perform the procedure or treatment with stealth precision. Navigational surgery, robotics, and microrobots are making a huge impact in general dental treatment, paving the way for further innovations using robotics in dentistry and oral surgery.

Caledonia’s Angry Rooster Joins Neighbors to Bring Holiday Warmth to Community BY KIMBERLY LONG
A
s the holidays approached this year, Helen Serafine, owner of Angry Rooster Deli in Caledonia, felt it would be “embarrassing to sit down and eat a giant turkey on Thanksgiving when some people won’t even get a bite.” Everyone who knows Serafine knows it is second nature of her to think of others. True to form, Helen Serafine had a generous solution. Serafine decided to host a charitable event to provide individuals and families with a dinner on Thanksgiving. On her restaurant’s Facebook page, she posted that the Deli would be “preparing a Thanksgiving dinner for those who might need a little help.” Signing up for this dinner simply required people to give their first name, number of diners, and time of pick up. Discretion was a priority, as it can be embarrassing for some to ask for help. To make this event even more accessible, Serafine offered delivery as well. After seeing the post on the Deli’s page, the community wanted to help. People from around the area stepped up and donated their time, money, and items including potatoes, gravy, cranberries, vegetables, squash, and over 15 turkeys. Serafine reflected, “Without the help from the community, this wouldn’t have been possible.” The Deli was able to serve over 100 people in Caledonia and the surrounding area.
Serving at Thanksgiving!
Along with the coat tree, a “gift tree” has been set up in the Deli. Tags with a description of people (often children) who might not have the opportunity to have the Christmas everyone deserves are hung on the tree like ornaments. According to Serafine, people have been snatching tags off that tree like no one would believe, and the tree is now empty. All these tags represent individuals who will now receive a gift from Santa this Christmas. Filling bellies, spreading warmth, and creating smiles this holiday season is what this community is all about. Helen Serafine strongly believes that without the help of the community, none of these charitable events could have been achieved. She continues to spread joy through her efforts to help those around her and hopes it keeps growing each year.
Volunteers prepare for an Angry Rooster Thanksgiving!
Serafine is proud to be a part of a community that steps up when people are in need. This was the second Thanksgiving dinner prepared by the Deli and its community. Serafine hopes that this charitable event continues growing each year. For now, the giving hasn’t ended here. Serafine and her fellow deli workers, along with others in the community, have placed a “coat tree” outside her restaurant on State Street. At night, people who need to stay warm come and take a coat from the tree. Serafine says she often gets to work in the morning to find the coat tree completely empty. It gets filled again as soon as possible to continue providing warmth to those who need it. Talk about spreading warmth to others!

“Yuletide” celebrates the birth of the Sun and also celebrates the “Mother” at the height of her “Greatness.” Pagans celebrate Yuletide in many ways; most will decorate a “Yuletide” tree, keep it in their homes until most of the leaves fall off, then burn the Yule log. In ancient Rome, the winter solstice was celebrated at the Feast of Saturnalia to honor Saturn, the god of agricultural bounty.
Can you draw the Winter Solstice Night Sky and Stonehenge? Stonehenge is one of the major structures associated with the Solstice, the other two being Newgrange and Maeshowe. Make sure to add lots of snowflakes and stars to showcase the night sky. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

Reconsider your furniture. Furniture can make rooms feel cozy, cramped or spacious. For homeowners with limited space in their homes, furniture that also can be used as storage can save space without sacrificing comfort. For the bedroom, choose a storage bed if the quarters are cramped and it’s difficult to find space for two dressers. Such beds also can be used to store bed linens if closet space is limited. Purchase storage ottomans and/or end tables with storage beneath to make living areas feel less cramped.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity.

The Season was waning to its close. The gardens showed but little of the ravages of autumn as yet. The noble avenues of trees were still in their glory of fulness and expansive verdure; although here and there a few fallen leaves seemed to have fluttered down to earth as premature heralds of decay. The later flowers were gorgeous in their many-coloured splendour, though their earlier sisters had already lived the best of their lives, and now drooped their heads, as if to hide their blighted charms. ~J. Visiting Yap Dog Ruins Holidays DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My sisterin-law insists on bringing her yappy, ill-tempered lap dog, “Mitsi,” to our house every Christmas through New Year’s. Mitsi gets along with no one but her owner, frightens our two cats and barks at everyone in the house during dinner, nonstop. I love having my brother and his wife over, but Mitsi is making things hellish. How can I politely ask her to leave Mitsi in a kennel during visits? -- Barked Out in Birmingham DEAR BARKED OUT: I don’t know that there’s a way to tell your sisterin-law to leave her dog at home that would be taken well. Mitsi clearly is a full member of their family and travels with her. Can a compromise be reached instead? Ask her if Mitsi can be placed in a separate room during mealtimes while they are visiting. She’ll probably still bark, but at least it won’t be right in your ear. You also need to discuss how Mitsi is stressing out the cats. Sometimes people think it’s funny when a visiting dog chases the family pets around, but it’s not fun for those pets. It’s like having a schoolyard bully walk right into your home. Try to keep the discussion civil. Ultimately, you’ll have to decide what level of compromise to ask for in order to keep peace in your house, and you’ll have to be firm. Your sister-in-law takes her relationship with her dog seriously; she should respect your concerns as well. That discussion probably won’t be comfortable, but if Mitsi’s barking and bullying are making the holidays a living hell, you need to speak up. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

a festive table on a dime
YOU
C AN
DO
IT!
Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.
Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.
Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.
Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.
Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.
Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.
Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, women in the United States are entitled to 12 weeks maternity leave. Women can choose to use a portion of that maternity leave even before their children are born if physical limitations are making it challenging for them to continue working. Women should put their health and the safety of their unborn children ahead of their responsibilities at work. In addition, women should not hesitate to speak with their employers about their comfort levels while pregnant. If an issue arises, speak with your boss, who deserves the benefit of the doubt. In some instances, breastfeeding also is protected by law at job sites or at the office. It is best for women to familiarize themselves with breastfeeding policies ahead of time so they can make the proper accommodations. Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors which work activities are permissable and which should be avoided at particular times in the pregnancy. Every effort should be made to avoid toxic substances, and pregnant women should not lift heavy items or engage in any potentially risky physical activity. For more information about workplace rights, visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at www.eeoc.gov.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save the peel on oranges and grapefruits. You can toss them on a fire for a nice smell. * Fold and snip a coffee filter into a paper snowflake. Lay over an iced cookie or cake to sift a sugar design on top. * “When planning to visit my hometown for the holidays, I set aside a few hours to take the kids to the park or a nice playground. I message all my old friends and classmates with kids (Facebook is great for this) a few weeks ahead of time and let them know when I’ll be there. It’s great to catch up while the kids play, and even if no one shows up, we still have a fun break.” -- F.L. in California * “When there are big family jobs to be done (like getting ready for the holidays), we write all the tasks down on slips of paper and put them in a hat. We take turns choosing tasks until all the paper is divvied out. Sometimes we trade, but we all get a fair chore list.” -V.O. in Oregon * Make a holiday cheese ball simply: Combine a package of cream cheese with a cup of finely shredded cheese (your choice) and 1/3 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt. Form into a ball, roll in coating of your choice (dried fruit pieces, chopped nuts, spices, etc.) and chill. Wrap in a pretty cellophane bag and bring with pita chips, crackers or pretzels as a hostess gift. * “Wax drippings from candles can be scraped off of most hard surfaces with the side of a credit card.” -- T.E. in Kansas
