Norman Rockwell was born in New York City in 1894 and dreamt of becoming an artist when he was young. Rockwell received his first commission at age 17 and illustrated for Boy’s Life, the monthly magazine of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1916, Rockwell was hired by The Saturday Evening Post. When Rockwell began working for the Post, his humorous and deadpan depictions of American life tugged at the heartstrings of the public - even if they weren’t so adored by art critics. Rockwell spent 47 years working for this iconic magazine. Rockwell produced paintings for the Post and other publications that depicted key images in American history, including Charles Lindbergh’s crossing of the Atlantic, the Moon Landing and World War II. However, some of Rockwell’s most beloved work pertains to his holiday scenes. Rockwell used real people as his models, and every detail in his reproduction paintings of photographs was fastidiously planned, say biographers. Over time, Rockwell’s paintings helped define an idealized vision of American life and Christmas celebrations. Even now people seek to emulate the merriment and magic exemplified in Rockwell’s imagery - from tired toy store clerks to a boy discovering Santa kissing his mom to the great holiday dinner. Rockwell produced 29 Christmas covers as well as greeting cards and other holiday scenes. The holiday season would not be the same without the work of artist Norman Rockwell. His influential images helped reflect a glorified version of American life and have helped to make the holiday season even more special for millions of people.

Certain holiday images have been ingrained in the minds of the public. Coca-Cola’s smiling bearded Santa Claus, in his now universally recognized red coat, helped create a model from which all other Santas evolved. And an early 20th century artist and illustrator helped to establish the feelings of the Christmas season for millions with portraits featured on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Lakeville

Prostate-Shrinking Medicines and Cancer

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C Caring for you and the community since 2001.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve had low-grade prostate cancer for several years and am presently on “active surveillance.” My PSAs have been high but steady, running around 7.8 to 9.2. I have a greatly enlarged prostate, which I believe contributes to the high PSA numbers. I would like your opinion regarding finasteride (Proscar), as I am considering taking it. I see one of its side effects is that it increases the risk of developing a very serious form of prostate cancer. Since I already have this cancer, am I at an increased risk of mine growing more aggressive? -- D.N.W. ANSWER: A 2013 study showed that although finasteride reduced the overall risk of prostate cancer from 15% to 10% in men followed up to 18 years on finasteride, there was a small increase in high-grade, aggressive prostate cancer, from 3% to 3.5%. However, there was no increased risk of prostate cancer death among treated men. Several follow-up studies have suggested that the apparent small increase in aggressive prostate cancers reflected an easier ability to find these cancers, since finasteride shrinks prostate tissue, making it easier to both biopsy and read the results. My view is that the apparent increase in aggressive prostate cancer is unlikely to represent a real danger in taking finasteride. There is no evidence to suggest that finasteride would change the behavior of an existing tumor. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

WAITING ON THAT CAVITY CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS Leaving cavities untreated is never a good idea, and doing so can lead to a multitude of issues, including a “periapical tooth abscess.” Abscesses are pockets of puss that can develop around the tooth and its root when bacteria enter the dental pulp through a crack, chip, or cavity. Periapical tooth abscesses occur under the gum at the side of the root. Abscesses can be intensely painful and cause a throbbing ache that can spread to the jaw and neck, causing earaches and headaches. As the infection intensifies, it can cause facial swelling, difficulty swallowing, and fever. The abscess can be drained by your dentist, and the tooth will require either a root canal or extraction.

Cavity-causing bacteria and the damage that results can be controlled by dealing with bacterial plaque activity every day. It takes the combined effort of conscientious daily brushing and flossing, smart eating, and regular professional visits to promote total oral health as well as complete body health. If it’s been too long since you treated your teeth and gums to professional care, now would be a good time to call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL for an appointment. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre. Call 585.343.4246.

P.S. Even if a tooth abscess ruptures and the pain goes away, treatment is still necessary to avoid sepsis, which can be life-threatening.

HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Use proper form when exercising. Improper form can lead to injury and/or muscle fatigue. Men and women who cannot adhere to proper form when working out may need to reduce the amount of weight they’re lifting. As activities are performed using proper form, people may find they’re building muscle without growing fatigued. As workouts progress, weight can be added.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * B.B. in Massachusetts writes: “I have a rubber disc (used for taking covers off jars) that I keep in my shower. When showering, I put the disc over the drain so the water can accumulate, then I soak my feet at the same time.” * To save yourself some time and aggravation, make a safety set of keys that match your current set exactly. You will never have to go looking for your keys when you are in a hurry, and you won’t have to determine if the key you need is on the ring. It is! * “Re: your recent tip about storing heirloom quilts in a cedar chest: No, no, a thousand times no! Nothing is worse for quilts -- heirloom or otherwise -- than storing them in cedar chests. Acids will not only stain them but break down the fabric over time.” -- B.R. in Washington. Thanks B.R. Although my grandmother did store quilts and other fabric items in her cedar chest, according to sources at the National Quilters Circle, the best place for an heirloom quilt may be on a bed. You can stack them, but rotate so that no quilt gets too much sun. -- JoAnn * “For squeaky door hinges, forget about graphite, WD-40 or any of those other messy lubricants that may last for only a few months. Pull the hinge pins, wipe them clean with a dry rag, and then apply a thin coating of Vaseline with your finger. Properly done, your hinges should remain free of squeaks for at least a year.” -- F.B. in Colorado GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

While it might be synonymous with Santa Claus and cold weather, the North Pole is actually much warmer than the South Pole. That’s because the North Pole sits at a lower elevation than the South Pole, and it is located in the middle of an ocean. The South Pole, on the other hand, is located on the continent of Antarctica, which is covered in ice. But Santa fans mulling a trip to the North Pole to visit jolly old St. Nick might want to think otherwise, as temperatures at the North Pole are less than welcoming. Summertime temperatures at the North Pole, for example, hover right at the freezing point. In addition, because of the way Earth rotates, the North Pole experiences just one sunrise and one sunset each year. However, because the sun is always above the horizon in the summer and below the horizon in the winter, the North Pole actually experiences 24 hours of sunlight in summer and zero hours of sunlight in the winter. While children in North America know the North Pole as home to Santa Claus, that’s a relatively recent addition to the legend of Santa Claus, a story that some historians suggest traces its origins all the way back to the third century. Historians credit famed 19th century caricaturist and editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast with being the first to link Santa Claus and his workshop to the North Pole. However, many Nordic countries continue to say Santa Claus lives in their territories.

CURE!!

YOUR FUNGAL TOENAILS

• Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? Now’s the time to get treatment. • If left untreated, fungal toenails can cause: recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomfort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance. • Recent studies show that fungal nail infections lead to a weakened immune system. During times like this we all need to keep our immune systems functioning optimally. • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation, and numbness to their feet can develop more serious complications. • There are safer, new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one a day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

Thank you, City Workers! On Dec. 4th, to the city workers of Canandaigua: Thank you for remaking two crosswalks on Main Street at Wood Library and at the Congressional Church. They are beautiful! I would also like to thank them for their conscientiousness as I was in a wheeled vehicle and they had to close off a portion of the sidewalk. I went into the street to carefully go around the trucks, and a worker moved the cones over so I would have more room to safely pass around them. Thank you for your awareness and consideration for my safety. Thank you, Town of Sweden! Thank you to the Town of Sweden for allotting funds to repair the town highway

Thank you for your diligence in doing your job as well as for also making it a pleasant experience when someone needs to check out! Thank you, Laura! Thank you, Laura, for taking the time to deliver the package you found on County Road 37 that should have been delivered to County Road 40. Blessings due your way! Thanks for Breakfast! Driving Disaster Congratulations to the woman on [local road] the other day. I didn’t see you kill anyone, which is good, but I saw you weaving in and out of your lane. When I passed you, you had your head down looking at your lap. Shame on you! Then when you got up to the cutoff, you aimed for one road while staying in the left-hand lane. Unfortunately, there was a truck in your way. No problem for you. You went to the left of the truck in the grass and tore off a piece of your car in the back from hitting the guard rail. You got off at [local road] and continued straight with your driver’s rear end dragging. I hope I never see you again, and if I do, I’m getting off the highway and walking. It’s safer.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

You’re a Mean One, 2020!

Bring Back These 5 Victorian Traditions & Keep your Inner Grinch at Bay By Amanda K. Dudek “2020 Stink Stank Stunk” one ornament read, with the Grinch’s hand holding a bauble for effect. While blessed to have suffered only minor inconveniences from the pandemic, I understand this sentiment. It is nearly New Year’s Day, and many of us are looking forward to closing this chapter and moving on to the next. Nevertheless, the holidays await. How can we find our Christmas spirit at the end of a year which, for the most part, has been anything but holly or jolly? Approximately 90% of Americans celebrate Christmas, many of them as a secular holiday. In fact, much of what we associate with the holiday today came from the Victorian Christmas traditions introduced in the 18th and 19th centuries. After a year that would make Ebenezer Scrooge look like Santa Claus, perhaps trying one or more of these classic holiday practices will revive your Christmas spirit and boost your holiday cheer! When selecting gifts, go small: Resist the draw of the largest items during your holiday shopping. The first Nativity centers around the giving of the most meaningful of gifts. Our present day Christmas tradition of gift giving has been tied to this small but powerful gift as well as to the three gifts of the Magi for centuries. During the Victorian Era, gifts evolved from fruit, nuts, candies, small handmade items and trinkets to larger, more expensive, store-bought luxuries. While the former had typically been hung from Christmas trees, the latter had to be placed on the floor, thus giving rise to the tradition of placing presents beneath the tree. Mak I Moder: Consider browsing your local shops and boutiques for unique luxuries which are both attractive and small enough to decorate your tree. You’ll be supporting community businesses and beautifying your home at the same time! Send holiday cards by mail instead: Social distancing is still a factor, and many of us are experiencing digital fatigue. Give yourself a much-needed break. Unplug, skip the email and social media posts, and mail your loved ones real cards they can hold in their hands. Christmas cards’ existence and quick rise to popularity in the mid-to late-1800’s was likely a combination of social-economic factors and the ingenuity of Sir Henry Cole, often credited with commissioning the Christmas card. Sir Cole, an Englishman, did so in an atmosphere of much wider acceptance of Christmas celebrations in England. This is thought to be largely due to the marriage of England’s Queen Victoria to German-born Prince Albert. Germany had embraced Christmas celebrations centuries earlier. Less expensive color printing methods and dropping postage rates shortly followed. Mak I Moder: Henry Cole’s original Christmas card depicted three generations of the Cole family. Echo it by using family photos in your Christmas cards to make them truly, uniquely your own!

Make sweets & treats more fun with Christmas Crackers: It seems this Victorian tradition is alive and well in Great Britain, and it just might be one worth importing! Invented in the 1850’s by London confectioner Tom Smith, Christmas Crackers are made up of cardboard tubes wrapped in brightly-colored, festive paper twisted at both ends, resembling the bonbons with which they were once filled. Traditional Christmas Crackers contain a paper crown, intentionally corny jokes, and small gifts, candies, and other treats. These little bundles are called Christmas Crackers because they open with a bang when pulled at both ends. Traditionally, guests around the Christmas table are meant to hold one end of their own Christmas Cracker in their right hand while the person to their left grabs the other end. At the same time each guest must cross their left hand over their right to grab the other end of the cracker belonging to the neighbor on their right. This creates a sort of crisscrossed arms “chain” around the table. Then, family and friends all pull the Christmas Crackers at once, creating a chorus of pops and flurry of gifts. Mak I Moder: Choose from a surprising variety of Christmas Crackers, ranging greatly in content and expense. It is worth noting that some are designed for children while others are geared for adults. Make Yourself a Bowl of Wassail: First, it’s simply fun to say! Wassail, pronounced wah-sul, was a hot, spiced or mulled beverage - typically hard cider, ale, or wine - served to guests, especially after caroling, to warm them from the winter chill. It was not uncommon to flavor the wassail with spices such as nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon sticks while sweetening it with brown sugar and whole baked apples. Mak I Moder: When preparing wassail for your next holiday get together, be sure it is both warm and spiced when selecting a recipe. For a tropical twist, combine cider, dark rum, and baked pineapple chunks, and for a family-friendly wassail, skip the spirits and use only regular apple cider instead. Do a little Christmas jig: Believe it or not, dancing has a long association with Christmas celebrations. Families, friends, neighbors, and even businesses would throw holiday parties which commonly included food, drink, music and dancing. Guests might dance the waltz, the Polka, a country-dance or any number of other popular options. Mak I Moder: We certainly will not be throwing any holiday dances or get togethers this year. However, with many families staying home on Christmas, this is the perfect opportunity to crank up the holiday tunes and join in with your kids in some sweet dance moves for a family rock around the Christmas tree. After all, it’s a Christmas tradition! ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Getting Through Winter Cold weather is here ... joining the coronavirus and the flu. Such a wonderful trio of events all at the same time. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says that temperatures this winter will be a bit warmer for much of the country, at least for the eastern portion. The other Farmer’s Almanac divides the country in a different way, with the north half of the country seeing the cold. We didn’t want to go outside anyway, did we? This winter especially we need to do all we can to stay healthy. If you live in an especially cold area that’s likely to get a lot of snow and ice, find someone to take care of it and be sure you’re on their storm list. Arrange for prescriptions to be sent by mail from the pharmacy. Stock up on batteries for flashlights. Remember to keep your cellphone charged at all times. Try to stock up on heavy or large items from the grocery store, ideally from curbside pickup. A box of canned goods and extra toilet paper will keep you from having to scramble at the last minute. Don’t try to save money by keeping the temperatures in your house too low. Seniors especially can get into trouble with hypothermia before we even know it. Aim for indoor temperatures of 68 F to 70 F, and put on a sweater! One of the biggest things you can do to stay safe this winter is sign up with the seniors daily check-in, a phone call you’ll receive either from the town or senior center to make sure you’re OK. Or create your own phone tree with friends to check in every day.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This year, we are only going to have a few family members over on Christmas Day. In past years, I’ve put our dog, cat and rabbit in the back of the house with plenty of water and beds to sleep in, so the noise and lights and strange people don’t stress them out. I feel like we can safely keep the pets in their usual spots this year because there will only be eight people here for dinner and presents. What do you think? Cheryl in Lake City, Florida DEAR CHERYL: That’s your call. You know your pets. In addition to the size of the gathering, you should consider the personalities of your guests: Are any of them timid or afraid around pets, and would anyone be upset if your dog starts barking? The big question here is how many strangers each of your pets can handle. Rabbits, for example, are very susceptible to stress and should be kept in a quiet spot and not handled too much by visitors. A calm, well-socialized dog may be able to handle the influx of people. Same with your cat, who will simply disappear to a hiding spot if things get a little overwhelming. Even though it’s a smaller crowd this year, make a plan and share it. How much time should the pets spend with visitors around? When should they be placed in a separate area? (During dinner or when presents are opened, for example.) If a pet shows signs of stress, such as barking, yelping, meowing, hissing or growling, who will grab them and take them to the quiet spot to calm down? When everyone knows the strategy, they can act quickly to keep the party calm and pets healthy and safe. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com.
