Help Feed Hungry Pets This Holiday Season DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last year, pandemic lockdowns, job losses and financial instability caused many families, along with their pets, to experience food insecurity. Because groceries are a higher priority for families than pet food, many pets got less to eat or lived off table scraps, which can be unhealthy over the long term. In 2020, local shelters, businesses and other groups came together to collect donations of food or money to purchase food and supplies for pets. These were a great help. However, we’re not out of the woods yet. Rising prices due to inflation and supply chain issues, plus continued financial instability, means that many pets will go hungry again this year. Can Paw’s Corner readers rise to the occasion again this year and help neighbors and their pets to stay fed and healthy? -- Shelter Volunteer in Wichita, Kansas
585.226.8111 • sales@gvpennysaver.com
DEAR VOLUNTEER: You’ve done just that, and I thank you! This holiday season, I know my readers will make the effort to help pets through donations of food, supplies and cash. But maybe you’re a new pet owner or have never donated before. Maybe you don’t even have a pet right now, but want to help. There are so many choices out there. My advice is to pick just one way to help, because no contribution is too small. Pet food supplier Chewy has a great article on its website with ways to help: https://be.chewy.com/ pet-food-banks/ Local shelters often do community outreach to help feed pets so owners can keep their pets and not surrender them. Contact the nearest pet shelter, either by email or phone, and ask what type of donations they need. Your contribution will go directly to that shelter, so you’ll know the impact you’re making. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 30, 1862, the U.S.S. Monitor sinks in a storm off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Just nine months earlier, the ship had been part of a revolution in naval warfare when the ironclad dueled to a standstill with the C.S.S. Virginia (Merrimack) off Hampton Roads, Virginia.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * To prevent candle wax from sticking to a candleholder, swipe the inside with a little olive oil. It’ll do the trick! * Make your own gift wrap from everyday items like newspaper (think color comics) and children’s drawings, which can be glued together along the edges. For a really unique wrapping, try inexpensive fabric. * Cookies are so fun to make (and to eat). To save some of your favorites for the new year, simply place dough balls on a cookie sheet and freeze. Pop into a freezer-safe bag, and you can have freshly baked cookies pretty much anytime! -- JoAnn * “I have two carafes that I use for my breakfast bar. I keep coffee in one, and the other holds milk or cream. On holiday nights, I prep the cream carafe and put it in the fridge. In the morning, while the first pot of coffee is brewing, I fill the coffee carafe with hot water and let it sit until the coffee is ready. It keeps the coffee hot longer. Then guests can serve themselves some coffee while the next pot is brewing.” -- D.A. in Ohio * “Wine: Nobody I know is wasting it. But if you’re done before the bottle is, pour the leftover wine into ice-cube trays to save it. You can use it later in recipes or (my favorite) to chill a glass of wine!” -- E. in Florida * A can opener’s crevices can be cleaned by “opening” a length of waxed paper. Kitchen scissors can be sharpened by folding a piece of aluminum foil and cutting through it with the scissors.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The universe has a color -- but it’s not what you might think. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University took the average of light from over 200,000 galaxies and discovered that the universe is actually kind of beige. They dubbed the hue “cosmic latte.”

DID YOU KNOW? As holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, retailers who use apps and mobile responsive websites to reach more customers may benefit by making a concerted effort to reach older shoppers. According to Nielsen’s Mobile Measurement, 26 percent of the more than 100 million mobile shoppers are 55 and older, while an additional 40 percent are between the ages of 25 and 44. Those figures might surprise some retailers who are quick to associate mobile shopping with digital-native Millennials. Nielsen’s Fourth-Quarter 2014 Mobile Multicultural Insights report even noted that Hispanics are more inclined to shop via mobile than non-Hispanic, white smartphone owners. Retailers may also be interested to know that more and more shoppers are turning to apps instead of websites to do their shopping. Between the fourth quarter of 2013 and the fourth quarter of 2014, Nielsen reports that 101.4 million smartphone users accessed a shopping app. By the fourth quarter of 2015, that figure had risen to 109.9 million users.
CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history. Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits. Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky. While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

Holiday celebrants employ holiday lights in various ways. Certain individuals may be content to hang lights on their Christmas trees and call their decorating complete. Others may get their holiday jollies by making sure each square inch of their home is covered in twinkling lights. Still, other people prefer the more subdued effect of lights framing one picture window of the house.

SERVE UP WARMTH FOR THE HOLIDAYS People often associate holiday imbibing with eggnog, but many other beverages can be enjoyed this time of year. Wassail is a hot, mulled cider that was traditionally consumed while wassailing, a ritual of Medieval English Christmas and Twelfth Night celebrations. A warm beverage and caroling go hand-in-hand. Wassail can be made in many different ways, depending on one’s tastes. But cider is an integral ingredient in most wassail recipes. Home cocktail creators can use this basic recipe and modify as they see fit. Wassail Serves 8 to 10 1/2 gallon apple cider 2 cups orange juice or pineapple juice 1/4 cup lemon juice 8 whole cloves 4 cinnamon sticks 1 cup orange juice Whiskey, if desired Add all ingredients to a large pot over medium heat. Allow to boil. Reduce and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes. Strain out the cloves and cinnamon sticks. For an alcoholic drink, add whiskey to desired taste.
Gold Standard Publication
Wassail is traditionally served out of a communal punch bowl, but can also be presented in individual mugs garnished with cinnamon sticks.

Blood-Pressure Goal: How Low Should It Go?
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2
Henrietta
---
20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: My sister, 75, is taking
585.286.3664
only two drugs for the past three years, and they are both for high blood pressure. Now she finds that her blood pressure is 110/70 and wonders why she can’t take less of her medications as an experiment. For instance, if she cut her pills in half and still has her blood pressure under 120/80, would there be any problem with this? -- R.I. ANSWER: The optimum goal of blood pressure treatment is still not known; however, evidence is accumulating that it might be lower than the less than 140/less than 90 that is has typically been the target. At least in higher-risk people with high blood pressure, a large trial found that a goal blood pressure of less than 120/less than 90 had better outcomes than the traditional goal. A more recent follow-up study showed that risk of dementia was also lower in the group that had the lower blood pressure. Not everyone can tolerate a blood pressure that low: Side effects of medications can be problematic. But it’s reasonable to aim at 120/80 or less. In your sister’s case, she is a little bit below that. It wouldn’t be unreasonable if, after discussing with her doctor, she tried reducing the dose of one of the medications. If her blood pressure remains lower than 120/80, she could continue that lower dose. However, if she feels perfectly well on her current dose, there is not a reason to reduce the dose. In either case, don’t reduce the dose without a discussion, nor cut the pill in half without checking with the doctor or pharmacist. Some pills shouldn’t be cut in half.
RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS All-purpose cleaners: Many cleaners list bleach and ammonia among their ingredients. Bleach may be listed as sodium hypochlorite. When used as directed in a well-ventilated space, bleach and ammonia can be relatively safe. However, fumes from bleach or ammonia can cause rashes and skin irritation and irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Bleach and ammonia should never be mixed because mixing the two can produce a deadly chloramine gas. Vinegar and baking soda can be used as a replacement for many household cleaning products, and these alternatives have virtually no dangerous side effects.

The number of elective dental procedures performed these days is ever-increasing. A fantastic smile symbolizes a person’s commitment to his or her whole state of care, increasing perceived personal attractiveness and confidence. Trendy fashion, hairstyles, and flawless skin remain coveted beauty indicators. However, a gorgeous set of teeth has now become the most sought-after of status symbols. Before- and after-photo comparisons, often showcased on multiple social media platforms, illustrate the easily achievable and realistic improvements of physical appearance through cosmetic dentistry. In an era of instant gratification, patients are seeking picture-perfect teeth and want them immediately. New cosmetic technology offers a much broader range of clinical options for aesthetic improvements to meet this increasing demand.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Serve locally sourced foods. Food is often front and center during the holiday season. Whether hosting family and friends at home, dining out or catering an office party, patronize businesses that sell only locally sourced foods. Locally sourced foods are much more eco-friendly than foods that must be shipped from afar before they land on your dinner table, and such foods tend to taste fresh as well. If serving at home, use reusable dishware and cutlery instead of paper plates and plastic utensils.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The ancient Romans used swan fat or donkey milk to soften wrinkles, while sores and freckles were treated with the ashes of snails. We are so grateful for the loyalty and support our customers show us year in and year out. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you all!
* Eskimos use refrigerators to stop their food from freezing. * Disney’s musical fantasy comedy “The Princess and the Frog” led to an unexpected salmonella outbreak in the United States. More than 50 children were hospitalized after the film’s release when they attempted to free handsome princes with a kiss from what turned out to be perfectly ordinary, definitely non-prince frogs.

“A certain amount of opposition is a great help to a man. Kites rise against, not with the wind...” ~ John Neal
We all have those days… or even longer periods… when everything seems to go wrong. We encounter disappointments at every hand. We realize that we simply must try harder… we must somehow find a way to overcome the difficulties. If we never had to contend with adversity, we would surely lose our ability to deal with it. We would miss out on the satisfaction of facing up to a nasty situation and coming out the winner! Let’s keep that in mind when troubles arise. Our experience enables us to anticipate the needs and desires of those who come to us for our help, and to provide for them in a very comforting way. Call us in your time of need.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 26, 1966, Jimi Hendrix writes the lyrics to “Purple Haze,” the song that would give him his breakthrough hit. Rolling Stone magazine would later name “Purple Haze” one of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.

WHAT IS A WILL? The online financial resource Investopedia notes that wills are legally enforceable documents that dictate how people want their affairs handled and assets allocated in the wake of their deaths. Wills should include a host of information, including who a person wants to assume guardianship of their minor-aged children should they pass away. This is especially important information to include in a will, as surviving relatives may have to go to court to contest guardianship if parents do not dictate who they want to serve as guardians in their wills.

Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus FRANCIS P. CHURCH (1839-1906)
Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? – Virginia O’Hanlon
no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
V
irginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measuredby the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. No Santa Claus! Thank God, he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. – The New York Sun, September 21, 1897 Thanks Faith Trimble, for recommending this beautiful column.

Downtown Avon What a beautiful job the downtown Avon merchants have done decorating their storefront windows for the Christmas season! Cheers also to Assemblyman Marjory Byrnes as well. Nice job, everyone!
RPO Gala Holiday Pops So lucky are we to have the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra! The Gala Holiday Pops was sensational and such a panacea for this hectic time we’re going through. Jeff Tyzik led the ensemble through the hymns of the season, and performed some songs with his own personal arrangements that made them more memorable and fun. Another year off for the orchestral choir made up of high school students from our area, hopefully as Tyzik noted, they’ll be back next year. Jeff does such a nice job of introducing each song and many times along with a story. Such a nice addition to the wonderful music we heard! He also noted that the arts, and of course music, can lift our spirits and souls in our times of need. The Rochester Philharmonic continues to give us the gift of wonderfully performed music. Thanks RPO!
Christmas thanks Thanks so much to the Rushville Lions Club who delivered wonderful Christmas food boxes which included Ham & the trimmings for a lovely meal along with some cupboard staples and even a pretty Christmas pillow. Your generosity is greatly appreciated! Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Christmas lights Thank you to every single family throughout Livingston County and neighboring counties who adorned their homes and yards with Christmas lights and decorations. Whenever my family drives anywhere, my children enthusiastically look for these homes and enjoy them so much. You have brought so much joy to this season. Thank you!

Wanda’s is wonderful! Where can you go to eat where the owner comes around with a tray and passes out Christmas cookies and snacks to the diners? Wandas in Livonia! Many thanks to her for such a nice place to meet and eat! Thank you! To Polly Hanna who owns Rush Inter Pet, Inc. Pet Cemetery: Thank you for taking care of our animals. People should drive through it. It is open to everyone. It is better taken care of than most cemeteries. Thank you. - T.L.D. Riga Christmas Concert On Saturday, December 18th, the Riga Recreation hosted its annual Christmas Concert celebration at the Raymond C. Adams Cobblestone Hall, featuring the Churchville-Chill School District’s singing group, Varsity Vocals, lead by conductor Mr. Erik Reinhart. The Riga community was treated to outstanding vocalizations of holiday favorites. The true essence of Christmas was captured by this wonderfull group of singers and their teacher. We have here one more example of the young people and staff of CCCSD that we are very proud of. Merry Christmas! - David T.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
AARP Survey: We Want to Grow Older at Home We want to stay home as we age. That much is clear from a recent survey by AARP. The 70-question survey touched on all types of topics about home and community preferences, with responses broken down by age. Here are some of the answers from seniors age 50 and older: 77% of us want to stay in our own homes as we age. 79% of us want to stay in our communities as we age. 33% of us know we will need modifications to our homes so we can stay in them and be safe as well as independent. The number of households headed by seniors in the next 20 years is going to rise from 34 million to 48 million. We’re going to want smart home devices and bathtub grab bars (and a full bath on the ground floor), as well as voice activated gadgets, wider doorways and easy access through the front door. We’ll also want accessory dwelling units (known as ADUs), such as in-law apartments or additions, so others can be nearby but not living with us. (AARP and Lowe’s have announced a collaboration to launch Lowe’s Livable Home, which will include services and products to help us create and build what we need so we can stay in our homes. See its website at www.lowes.com.) Safety also is on our minds, and over half of us would move to another area if it’s safer. Nearly half would move if it lowered our expenses. But we want a nice community, too, with bike trails and fast internet, ideally a small town where stores and services are nearby. If you want to see the survey questions and compare your own answers, go to www.aarp.org and search for 2021 AARP Home and Community Preferences Survey. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Start slowly. Seniors who have not been physically active for some time should take a gradual approach to exercise. Instead of heading right for the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine, start walking every day. When it rains, find a treadmill you can walk on. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends seniors begin by determining how many steps they can take in a day and then gradually working toward 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day. Utilize step counting apps on your smartphone to track your progress. Apply the same slow approach to strength training exercises, lifting only very light weights at first before gradually increasing weight as your body acclimates to the exercises. Page 35
